    Men bag three months imprisonment each over attempt to dupe lady

    A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Monday sentenced a driver, Orya Ugor, and his friend, Lucky Amiadame, to three months imprisonment each, for attempting to dupe a lady.

    The judge, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq, however, gave the convicts an option to pay N10,000 fine each.

    Sadiq advised the convicts to desist from committing crimes, adding that the sentence would serve as deterrent to others.

    The convicts, who reside in Nasarawa, were convicted on a count charge of attempting to steal.

    The convicts who pleaded guilty to the offence, begged the court to temper justice with mercy.

    The prosecutor, Florence Avhioboh, had told the court that one Florence Avhioboh, and his team attached to Gwarimpa Police Abuja, arrested them on Jan. 24.

    Avhioboh said that they tried to dupe a passenger of N7, 000 in their vehicle along Gwarimpa by Kubwa express way.

    “The mob around burnt the car to ashes,” she said.

    Avhioboh said during police investigation, the convicts confessed to the crime.

    The offence contravened the provisions of  Section 95 of the Penal Code.

    Fish seller jailed three months for reneging on payment agreement

    A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Wednesday, sentenced a fish seller, Mohammed Sani, 32, to three months imprisonment, for buying fish worth N70,000 on credit, and refusing to pay.

    The fish seller, who resides in Kado village, was convicted on a two-count charge of criminal breach of trust and cheating.

    The Judge, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq, however, gave the convict an option of N10, 000 fine.

    Sadiq also ordered the convict to pay back the N70, 000 to the complainant and advised him to desist from committing crimes and be a truthful businessman.

    He said that the sentence would serve as a deterrent to other offenders.

    Sani, who pleaded guilty to the charges, begged the court to temper justice with mercy because he acted in ignorance and that he sold the fish on credit.

    The prosecutor, Florence Auhioboh, had told the court that one Rabi Abdul reported the matter at the Life Camp Police Station, Abuja, on Aug. 26.

    Auhioboh said the convict sometime in May, bought some fresh fish for N70,000 on credit from the complainant and promised to pay him, but reneged on his promise.

    He said that the convict converted the money to his personal use, and all efforts made to recover the money proved abortive.

    The prosecutor told the court that during Police investigation, the convict confessed to the crime and begged for mercy.

    He said that the offence was punishable under Sections 312 and 322 of the Penal Code.

    Teacher sentenced for mischief

    A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Tuesday sentenced a 32-year-old teacher, Godwin Lawrence, to one-month imprisonment for mischief.

    The judge, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq, however, gave the convict an option of N5,000 fine.

    He also ordered him to pay N15,000 as compensation to the nominal complainant.

    Sadiq advised the convict to desist from committing crimes, adding that the sentence would serve as a deterrent to other offenders.

    Lawrence, who resides at Karmo village, was convicted on a count charge.

    The convict, who pleaded guilty to the charge, urged the court to temper justice with mercy that he acted out of ignorance.

    The prosecutor, Florence Auhioboh, had told the court that one Isiaka Adama, of same address with the convict, reported the matter at the Karmo Police Station on Aug. 25.

    Auhioboh said that the convict on that same date was walking on the main road, the complainant horned several times but he refused to move.

    He started insulting him and broke the front wind screen of the complainant’s car valued at N15, 000.

    During the Police investigation, he confessed to the crime and begged for mercy.

    The prosecutor said that the offence was punishable under Section 327 of the Penal Code.

  • Two jailed for assault, stealing

    A Grade 1 Area Court, Karmo, Abuja, on Tuesday, sentenced one Chigozie Ogene and Michael Ade to two months imprisonment for assault and stealing of I-pad valued N38,500.
    The presiding judge, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq, said they must serve the sentence and warned them to desist from committing crimes.
    Sadiq said the sentence would serve as deterrent to others.
    The convicts, residents of Jabi, Abuja, faced a two-count charge of joint act and extortion.
    The convicts pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy and promised to be of good behaviour.
    The prosecutor, Zannah Dalhatu, had told the court that one Lawson Richard of Bwari, reported the matter at the Utako Police Station, Abuja, on March 29.
    Dalhatu said the convicts, and one other now at large, on March 28, accosted the complainant on Utako Street, dragged and showed him a sharp knife and threatened to stab him if he does not cooperate with them.
    Dalhatu said they collected his Techno C7 iPad valued N38, 500 and a cash of N7,000.
    The prosecutor said the iPad was recovered by police during investigation adding that the offence was punishable under sections 79 and 292 of the Penal Code.

     

  • Man docked for stealing clothes

    A 37-year-old man, Ameachi Ekwealor was on Tuesday arraigned in a Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, for allegedly stealing clothes worth N60,000.

    The defendant who resides at Zuba, Abuja, is standing trial on a count charge of stealing, which he denied committing.

    Earlier, the prosecutor, Zannah Dalhatu, told the court that one Samirat Sani of Gwarimpa Estate, Abuja, reported the matter at the Gwarimpa Police Station on Nov. 25, 2016.

    Dalhatu said that the complainant alleged that on that same date, the defendant came to her shop at the above address, on the pretence to buy clothes.

    The prosecutor said he allegedly stole the following items, five designer jeans and one chinos trousers, all valued at N60, 000.

    The prosecutor also said that the offence contravened Section 288 of the Penal Code.

    The judge, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq, granted him bail in the sum of N30, 000 and one surety in like sum and adjourned the case till May 9, for further hearing. 

  • Guard docked over alleged theft of medical equipment

    A 25-year-old security guard, Adamu Kawu, accused of stealing medical equipment valued at N500, 000, was on Tuesday brought before a Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja.

    Kawu, who resides at Jabi Village, Abuja, is standing trial on a two-count charge of criminal breach of trust and theft.

    The prosecutor, Florence Auhioboh, told the court that Engwa Christian of Jabi reported the matter at the Life Camp Police Station, Abuja, on March 17.

    Auhioboh said that the complainant alleged that sometimes in February, the defendant, stole his medical equipment valued at N500, 000.

    He said that the defendant also stole N60, 000 belonging to Bassey Evalson of the same address.

    The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 312 and 288 of the Penal Code.

    The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The Judge, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq, granted the defendant bail of N100, 000 and one surety in like sum.

    Sadiq said that the surety must provide any utility bill bearing his name and must be residing within the court jurisdiction.

    He adjourned the case to April 25 for further hearing.

    Court jails 29-year-old teacher 1 month for assaulting lady

    A Grade 1 Area Court, Karmo, Life Camp, Abuja, on Thursday sentenced a 29-year-old teacher, Albert Isaac, to one-month imprisonment for assault and mischief.

    The Area Court judge, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq, sentenced the convict after he pleaded guilty to the charge and begged for leniency.

    Sadiq, however, gave the teacher an option to pay N5,000 as a fine, and warned him to desist from committing crimes.

    Isaac of Zango Daura Estate, Kado, Abuja, was convicted on a two-count charge of assault and mischief.

    The convict prayed the court to temper justice with mercy, adding that it was the devil that made him act that way he did.

    “I don’t beat ladies because I respect them a lot,’’ the teacher said.

    Prosecutor Zannah Dalhatu had told the court that Emilola Efosa of Kuje, Abuja, reported the matter at the Gwarimpa Police, Station, Abuja, on Oct. 23.

    Dalhatu said that the complainant entered a tricycle from Galadimawa gate by Gwarimpa to Airport Junction, Abuja, and the convict later joined.

    He said getting to 3rd Avenue by Mr Biggs, Gwarimpa, the convict pointed at her and tore her dress valued at N35,000.

    The prosecutor said the offence contravened sections 268 and 327 of the Penal Code.
