Daniel blames Sheriff Loyalists for Ogun PDP crisis

An aspirant for the national chairman of the People’s Democratic Party ( PDP ), Otunba Gbenga Daniel, has blamed the leadership crisis in the state’s chapter of the party on the loyalists of the sacked national chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff.

Daniel, who was governor of Ogun State from 2003-2011, spoke with journalists on Wednesday shortly after he collected his nomination papers at the Abuja secretariat of the PDP.

He described the crisis as a play-off of the Sheriff-Makarfi tussle that lasted 14 months before the Supreme Court eventually sacked Sheriff in a July 12 judgment.

Two factions emerged from a recently conducted congress in Ogun, with both factions laying claim to the leadership of the chapter.

The national leadership of the PDP had, on August 23, set up a Caretaker Committee for the chapter, with Mr. Tunde Odanye as chairman.

But in a swift reaction, another group, led by a serving senator representing Ogun East senatorial district, Buruji Kashamu had rejected the Odanye-led caretaker committee from the outset.

Daniel however said the crisis in the chapter would not affect his chances of winning the chairmanship seat in the December 9 national convention.

“This crisis is not peculiar to Ogun State because many state chapters are experiencing crisis. Only that the crisis in Ogun is more reported than others”, Daniel said.

The ex-governor described his ongoing trial for alleged corruption as mere persecution, saying that also, would not work against his aspiration.

Readd: PDP crises grow in states

He insisted that he remained innocent of all the charges brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), until proven otherwise by a competent court.

“I don’t want to go into the politics of our own state but I am very sure that there is really no issue about my trial. If there is issue, I will not come to say I want to be chairman. And when you look at what is going on now in our country, who is in PDP that is not being tried?

“Virtually everybody who is in PDP is being tried for one thing or the other. They are being arrested on a daily basis and I think the media has a lot of work to report what is going on. As far as I am concerned, I cannot pronounce myself as innocent but I know that I am innocent”, he said.

Otunba Daniel slammed some members of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) for attempting to exclude him and a few other aspirants from the chairmanship race without consulting the affected aspirants.

Lagos LG poll: Sheriff-led faction says PDP will excel

The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos, Mr Segun Adewale, has expressed confidence that the party will do well in July 22 council poll.

Adewale of Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff-led PDP, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

He acknowledged that internal problems within the party had caused some setbacks, but said the party would rise above its challenges for a strong showing.

“The PDP is a strong party in the state. Agreed there are some problems here and there caused by some people for their personal interests, but the party will overcome all that and do well at the poll,” he said.

Adewale said he had made overtures to the faction led by Moshood Salvador on the need to have a united party but that his efforts were not appreciated.

He said the disagreement would not deter his faction from preparing well for the poll even as he said the door of peace was still open to the Salvador camp.

Adewale said his faction conducted its primary in all the 20 local government area and 37 local council development areas on Friday and that it was largely peaceful.

“We had our primary election on Friday and I can tell you that it was largely peaceful and successful.

“Apart from Agege, Ikeja and Amuwo where we recorded some problems, the primaries went well and candidates emerged for the chairmanship and councillorship seats.

“The successful conduct of our primary is a reflection of our determination and resolve to do well at the poll despite the odds.” he said.

Adewale condemned the alleged holding of primary by some groups under the name of PDP, saying it was illegal.

He said he was the authentic chairman of the state based on the Appeal Court judgement affirming Sherrif as national chairman, adding that any other primary outside his own was illegal.

“I am the authentic Chairman of PDP in Lagos. If any group is holding any primary in the state under the name of the party, it is null and void as it is illegal,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Salvador faction of Sen Ahmed Makarfi Caretaker Committee has directed its aspirants to seek any other political platform apart from the PDP to contest the forthcoming poll.

The Publicity Secretary of the faction, Mr Taofik Gani, told NAN that the faction took the decision as reconciliation with Adewale faction was not yielding results.

“Yes, we have directed our aspirants to seek any political parties of their choice for the election.

“They are using parties temporarily for the election pending the resolution of Makarfi /Sheriff at the Supreme Court,” Gani said.

Gani, however, said the faction would monitor and guide their aspirants while they contest on the platform of different political parties.

NAN reports that LASIEC has fixed July 22 as date of the council poll and July 29 for run-off. (NAN)

  • PDP crisis: Supreme Court reserves judgment

PDP crisis: Supreme Court reserves judgment

    …To communicate date to parties

The Supreme Court reserved judgment Monday in the appeal filed the sacked National Caretaker Committee of the party led by Ahmed Makarfi.

The Makarfi Committee is by the appeal, challenging the February 17 judgment of the Court of Appeal, Port-Harcourt division declaring among others, that the Makarfi-led Committee is illegal.

Monday, a five-man panel of the Supreme Court, led by the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen took arguments from parties and informed that that judgment has been reserved, and that a date will be communicated to them.

At the commencement of argument Monday, the court invited lawyer to the Ali Modu Sheriff faction of the PDP to move his application, with which he sought the striking out of the appeal.

Fagbemi argued that the judgment of the Court of Appeal having not be set aside, Sheriff and members of the executive committee remained the alter ego of the party and that only them could validly file any court process in the name of the party.

“In urging your Lordships to grant the application, I will say that the point here is not about the locus of counsel but about the competence of the appeal, whether it was filed with authority or not and whether or not the party in whose name the appeal was filed has a right to withdraw the appeal.

“PDP is a corporate body, therefore the corporate personality is defined in terms of the (party’s) constitution, which gives power, and the decision of the lower court that has not been set aside or suspended.

“If the party, through its directing minds, led by Ali Modu Sheriff and backed by the constitution of the party and the judgment of the Court of Appeal, have withdrawn the appeal, there is evidence that they exercised their rights and their powers rightly.

“Whoever is interested in the appeal can only come as an interested party and not to file an appeal in the name of the party,” Fagbemi said.

Lawyer to the Makarfi-led Committee, Wole Olanipekun (SAN) urged the court to grant his client’s appeal, set aside the judgment of the Court of Appeal and also dismiss the application seeking the striking of the appeal.

“I urge your lordships not only to dismiss this application but to do so with heavy cost.

“Apart from Rule 29 of the Rules of Professional Conduct, Rule 27(1) and (4) of the rules also demonstrate that the application is incompetent and the Supreme Court does not even have the vires to countenance it.”

Olanipekun noted that Niyi Akintola (SAN), who represented Sheriff and Oladipo against the PDP at the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal and who still represented the same clients at the Supreme Court could not decide who should represent the PDP at the apex court.

He said: “Appeal is a continuation of hearing. The initiator of this application has shot themselves in both legs. Are they saying they were respondents to a a non-competent respondent (the PDP) at the lower court? It is short of words to say it is abuse of process.”

Olanipekun prayed the court to grant his appeal and set aside the Court of Appeal’s judgment.

Lawyer to Sheriff and Prof Wole Oladipo, Akin Olujinmi (SAN), aligned with Fagbemi’s submission in relation to his application.

Olujinmi added that he had in his preliminary objection raised a similar issue of lack of authority on the part of the Makarfi committee to file the appeal.

He said: “In urging your lordships to grant the application filed by Lateef Fagbemi, we rely on all these processes and my own application filed on March 16, 2017. I rely on all the processes that I have identified.

“The issue we have raised in the application relates to the lack of authority of the people who brought the appeal. It is fundamental.

“The issue is very narrow and your lordships will have to consider whether the appeal is filed in the name of the PDP without authority is competent.

“The issue of counsel who represented the various parties at the lower court is irrelevant. Apart from lack of authority to file the appeal, there are no grounds to sustain the appeal.

“I urge your lordship to dismiss the appeal for lacking in merit and for being incompetent.”

On point of law, Fagbemi contended that Rule 29 of Rules of Professional Conduct referred to by Olanipekun “does not apply to the competence of the application seeking the striking out of the appeal.”

Earlier court reelected the objection by Sheriff’s lawyer to the motion by the Makarfi committee seeking leave to appeal on grounds of mixed law and filed.

The court proceeded to grant the application after dismissing objection and deemed the appeal as properly filed.

Other members of the court’s panel Justices Tanko Muhammad, Bode Rhodes-Vivour, Kayode Ariwoola and Dattiji Muhammad.

Prominent members of the party, representing both sides of the dispute were in court to witness proceedings.

Sheriff and Makarfi were in court in person. They sat on opposing sides of the large courtroom.

Some of those who accompanied Sheriff were the Deputy National Chairman of the faction, Cairo Ojugo, and Oladipo (Secretrary).

Those who came with Makarfi included a former Vice Chairman of the party (South West), Chief Bode George, the present occupant of the position in the faction, Chief Eddy Olafeso, former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Emeka Ihedioha, Dayo Adeyeye and Tom Ikimi.

  • Makarfi, sheriff congratulate Ekeremadu at 55

Makarfi, sheriff congratulate Ekeremadu at 55

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has congratulated Deputy President of the Senate, Mr Ike Ekweremadu, on his 55th birth anniversary.

In separate messages, National Chairman of the party, Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff and the Chairman, National Caretaker Committee, Sen. Ahmed Makarfi, on Friday in Abuja, felicitated with Ekweremadu.

Makarfi, in a statement by the committee’s National Publicity Secretary, Mr Dayo Adeyeye, commended Ekweremadu for his “outstanding contributions to the development of the legislature and the country”.

He described him as a “fighter for good causes”.

“We are indeed proud of his achievements as one of the pillars of the PDP, working with all the stakeholders to revive, rejuvenate and move the party to greater heights.

“We believe in his leadership qualities and urge him to continue with his services to humanity,” Makarfi added, and wished Ekweremadu good health, long life and more years of fruitful service to Nigeria.

Similarly, in a statement by Dr Cairo Ojougboh, his deputy, Sheriff said Ekweremadu was a true democrat and a man of honour.

Sheriff said that the PDP was very proud of the way Ekweremadu had carried himself in the Senate.

“He brought a wealth of experience into the 8th Assembly.

“He is a stabilizing force in the Senate, who has helped to streamline difficult issues in the upper chamber of the National Assembly.”(NAN)

  • Makarfi chides Sheriff over attack on Jonathan, Wike

Makarfi chides Sheriff over attack on Jonathan, Wike

The Chairman of the Caretaker Committee of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ahmed Makarfi has chided the National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff for attacking former President Goodluck Jonathan and the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike.

Sheriff had, at a media briefing in Abuja on Thursday, accused Jonathan of collecting N50 million from Wike to organise last week’s stakeholders meeting to reconcile warring factions in the PDP. Sheriff’s deputy, Dr. Cairo Ojougboh addressed the media briefing.

But at another media briefing in Abuja on Friday, Makarfi said it’s uncharitable for Sheriff and his camp to concoct deliberate falsehood aimed at impugning the character and public perception of the former president.

In the text of the address read by the spokesman of the Caretaker Committee, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, the faction said it’s the height of lunacy for Sheriff and Ojougboh to allege that a person of Jonathan’s standing could be induced by anyone to organise a meeting.

Makarfi said, “These people are pigs in the mud and they have no qualms in dragging decent people into the pit.

“Our first reaction after reading the concoction put together by Cairo Ojugboh was to ignore him since he is not an officer of the PDP.

“But ignoring him may send wrong signal to the unsuspecting members of the public and members of our party, hence the need for this clarification.

“Mr. Ojugboh in recent times has been making series of unfounded and unsubstantiated allegations against major stakeholders of the PDP, especially those people his renegade group believes are seriously against the evil intention of Ali Modu Sheriff to destroy the only main opposition voice in the country, the PDP.

“However, we are not surprised that Mr. Cairo would hallucinate and found pleasure in castigating Governors Nyesom Wike and Ayodele Fayose of Rivers and Ekiti states at every turn but has never been able to utter a single word of criticism against their paymaster, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) despite its gross ineptitude and maladministration.

“For the record, the last stakeholders meeting convened and chaired by former President Jonathan, was not sponsored or organised by Governor Wike or Fayose as alleged by Mr. Cairo Ojugboh”.

According to Makarfi, the need for the meeting was agreed upon at the residence of a former National Security Adviser (NSA), Gen. Aliyu Gusau in the presence of Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, Professor Wale Oladipo, Senator David Mark, Senator Ahmed Makarfi and Senator Ben Obi

“Gen. Gusau and Senator Mark were mandated in that meeting to approach the former President to convene an all-inclusive meeting of stakeholders in order to chart a way forward for a lasting peace in the party”, Makarfi added.

The Caretaker Committee expressed dismay at Sheriff’s penchant for blackmailing every available public institution in the country just to mislead the unsuspecting public.

Makarfi continued, “Again, we wish to take serious exception to the baseless allegation made by Ojougboh that Governor Wike bribed the Judiciary to get justice in the Rivers State governorship election at the Supreme Court.

“This is another high point of rascality by the Sheriff renegade group and we have been reliably informed that the latest accusation against the Judiciary is part of their calculated and clandestine plot to blackmail the Justices of the Supreme Court.

“They did the same to the Justices of the Special Appeal panels during the Ondo State governorship election case when the panel, led by Justice Sankey was falsely accused of collecting over N200 million from former Gov. Olusegun Mimiko in November 2016.

“We believe the Judiciary and indeed all Nigerians are taking note of the antecedents of Senator Ali Modu Sheriff and Co. as we urge the Judiciary not to ignore such weighty allegations by this irritant group”.

The Makarfi camp expressed satisfaction that the ongoing campaign by Sheriff to infiltrate the ranks of party members in the South East and South-South was being spurned by key stakeholders.

He stated that the PDP is not organising any campaign or rally in any part of the country at the moment and urge members to remain steadfast and continue to ignore any meeting called by Sheriff and his “doomsday naysayers”.

According to him, there will be no elective national convention of the PDP as announced by Sheriff until the appeal pending before the Supreme Court is decided. Him advised state chapters to ignore any directive from Sheriff regarding the convention.

He also enjoined stakeholders to ignore the request made by Sheriff for state chapters to submit their lists of delegates on or before the April 27 and his call for the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on May 3.

The PDP, he said, will announce meetings of the various organs of the party at the appropriate time after due consultation with all stakeholders.

“For the umpteenth time, we wish to re-iterate that Senator Sheriff and co. are in defiance of the Court of Appeal order of status quo ante May 21, 2016 with self-appointed officers like Cairo Ojugboh.

“Only three officers are with him and therefore, such NWC is non-existent. As for the deputy officers who shamelessly assumed offices as NWC members on false claim of purported resignation of the substantive officers, their comic action against the party speaks volume”.

The Makarfi camp called on all organs and key stakeholders in the party nationwide to continue supporting the Caretaker Committee in moving the party forward.

According to him, the only interest of the Caretaker Committee is the survival of the PDP against the “suffocating influence” of the ruling APC.

  • Sheriff: Wike gave Jonathan N50m for PDP stakeholders meeting

Sheriff: Wike gave Jonathan N50m for PDP stakeholders meeting

The court backed National Chairman of People’s Democratic (PDP), Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff has alleged that the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike gave former President Goodluck Jonathan N50 million to organise the recent stakeholders meeting in Abuja.

But Dr. Jonathan has denied the allegation, saying that he took it upon himself to convene the meeting out of his genuine concern for peace to reign in the party.

Also reacting to the allegation, the Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose said Sheriff has taking his desperation too far by accusing the former president of taking bribe.

Fayose, in an SMS message by his media aide, Lere Olayinka, stated, “If Sheriff has taken his desperation to serve his paymasters in the APC to the level of accusing Jonathan of being bribed to organise peace meeting for the PDP, there is no reason for any sane mind to continue to respond to the continuous advertisement of his political insanity”.

But Sheriff who spoke through his deputy, Dr. Cairo Ojougboh at a news conference at the party’s secretariat on Thursday, said Governors Wike and Fayose recruited the Jonathan into a fake peace effort pre-determined to scuttle ongoing peace initiative in the party.

“The result is that President Jonathan was lured into committing a serious breach of protocol that led ‎to the failure of the exercise which was the intended outcome”, Sheriff said.

According to him, Wike and the media mogul, Chief Raymond Dokpesi have already established their own political party, adding that their mission was to tie the PDP down with undue controversies.

He further stated that the party was worried that the amount of money Wike was spending on the crisis could smear the image of the PDP

“This money belongs to the people of Rivers State and it should not be misappropriated at the expense of the people to whom it rightfully belonged.

“We therefore call on party leaders and Nigerians to refrain from accepting these monies from Governor Wike in line with the spirit of our founding fathers”, Sheriff added.

The party chairman restated his determination to go ahead with the plans to organise a convention for the party, saying preparations for a free and fair convention were in top gear.

Sheriff directed state chapter chairmen of the PDP to forward to the party secretariat the lists of all statutory delegates to the convention on or before April 27.

He added that the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party would hold on May 3.

Dr. Jonathan who spoke through his media aide, Ikechukwu Eze, dismissed Sheriff’s allegation that he collected N50 million from Wike.

According to him, he intervened in the crisis because of his genuine commitment to bring about peace in the party that made him president.

“I don’t think anybody will believe that Jonathan collected money from anybody to organise the meeting. It was out of his genuine concern to bring peace to the party.

“He has been meeting with members of the party; he met with Sheriff severally, he also met with Makarfi severally. He met with the governors.

“I don’t see any reason for anybody to say that Jonathan collected money from anybody to organise the stakeholders conference”, Eze said.

  • Manipulation of delegates list by PDP hierarchy is over – Sheriff

Manipulation of delegates list by PDP hierarchy is over – Sheriff

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff has said that the era of manipulating delegates’ lists by the party hierarchy to soothe their whims and caprices is over.

Sheriff said this in a communique read at the end of a stakeholders meeting organised for members of the party from Anambra in Enugu on Monday.

He said that the manipulation of delegates’ lists compiled from ward congresses amounted to the subversion of the wishes of the people.

The national chairman said that members of the PDP in Anambra had rightfully accused the national leadership of the party of instigating the crisis in the state.

“They said that the national secretariat had been the problem having been variously accused of substituting names of delegates that emanate from ward congresses.

“I agree that the national headquarters has been the problem. Henceforth, only genuine delegates that emanated from the ward congress will be accepted by the national headquarters,” he said.

Sheriff said that the party would no longer interfere with the delegates’ lists which were used in the election of candidates of the party in general elections.

“Anything done by the people will not be changed by anybody again and the list you bring to us is what we shall use to nominate our candidates,” he said.

He said that the party had had several misfortunes in Anambra, adding that efforts had been put in place to ameliorate them.

He said it was gratifying that members of the party in the state had finally resolved to work together.

“Having observed the misfortune of the party in the state we have moved to set up a reconciliation process to bring the warring factions under one roof.

“The reconciliation committee will be announced as soon as I get back to Abuja and I will start operating your suggestions,” he said.

He said that the PDP must win the forthcoming governorship election in Anambra.

“We will put our house in order. We shall win Anambra come November this year,” Sheriff said.

Earlier in a plenary, Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu expressed happiness that the party faithful in Anambra had finally agreed to work together.

Ugwuanyi, who was represented by his deputy, Mrs Cecilia Ezeilo, said that the number of the party members that attended the meeting showed interest in the party was still high.

“We should sheath our swords, come together and take our rightful positions,” Ugwuanyi said.

Speaking, Gov. Dave Umahi of Ebonyi said: “This number here gives me hope.

“We have always cried that each time there is an election in Anambra the victorious party climbs on the back of the PDP,” he said.

Umahi, who was represented by his deputy, Mr Kelechi Igwe, said that the PDP in Anambra would still come alive.

“The umbrella has not torn. Under Sheriff the party will grow stronger. The chairman has shown that he does not discriminate,” Umahi said

  • How Borno Christians are faring under Shettima- CAN Chairman

How Borno Christians are faring under Shettima- CAN Chairman

Bishop Naga Williams Mohammed is the Chairman of Christians Association of Nigeria (CAN),  Borno State and also Secretary of Northern Bishops incorporated. The Christian Leader hails from Gwoza, Borno State, a place once seized by Boko Haram and declared as their Caliphate. The Christian cleric who bears in this interview with a group of journalists in Maiduguri spoke on the support Gov. Kashim Shettima has given to Christians in the wake of the Boko Haram crisis in rebuilding the churches that were destroyed by the insurgents in Borno State. He also recalled how tolerant the people have lived in the past as Muslims and Christians. Our correspondent JOEL DUKU was there.

Bishop we are surprised to see that your surname is ‘Mohammed’, how does this came into being?

Yes, in Southern Borno generally, it is common to see a family mixed up with both Muslims and Christians. My father was a Muslim and my Mother was a dedicated Christian. We were living in the same house, eating the same food and sharing the same culture. When it is Christmas, my Mum would give money to my Dad to buy whatever animal for us to slaughter. The same thing when it was time for Eid El Kabir (Sallah) Celebration, my Dad would buy a Ram for us to slaughter without discrimination.

As a Bishop, some persons would probably expect you to have dropped the ‘Mohammed’ in your surname, what do you say to that?

Someone cannot replace either of his biological parents. Mohammed is my father’s name, he was a Muslim and I cannot replace or change my father. That was his identity and I am his son.

You talked about the religious harmony in your family, how will you compare that with instances of religious suspicion all over Nigeria?

Waoh! In the past there was absolute tolerance to the extent that you don’t know this man’s religion and the other one, we all trust ones religion. In fact, in my Mum’s house, she had a kettle which is called ‘Buta’ in Hausa.  Muslims use it in performing ablution. While growing up, I was raised to see Muslims from a positive light. All I knew was that Muslims were doing what they were supposed to do, and we Christians were doing what we were supposed to do in terms of worship and coexistence in our communities. In Southern Borno where most of the Christians in Borno State hail from, most of our families are inter-faith based, mixture of Muslims and Christians. I used to know of a family where the father and his six children were Christians, while his three wives were Muslims, and they lived peacefully.

Bishop, Christians are in reasonable population in Borno State but they still constitute a minority in the State, tell us how much successive Government has been responsive to challenges of insurgency faced by Christians in Borno.

If you go back to recent history, our first major problem was in February 2006, when a Danish man whom I learnt was not even a Christian, portrayed a picture of the prophet of Islam in a bad light. Unfortunately, there was protest here in Maiduguri and Christians received the repercussion.  If I can recall, in 2006, they were saying miscreants, arsonists, hooligans, and bastards. I pity those who call them with these names, because, these bad guys when they see an opportunity, they execute it properly. A total of 56 churches were razed down in Borno, and so many shops belonging to Christians were destroyed and there was no compensation from the then Government.

You mean the then Governor, Ali Modu Sheriff didn’t release any funds for rebuilding and compensation for Christians who suffered the attacks and lost lives, assets and means of livelihood?

I was among the High Powered Administrative Committee as representative of the Christian community constituted by the then Governor Sheriff. I think only N150, 000 was given to each pastor whose entire church was destroyed. At a point, we compiled all the destroyed properties including churches and submitted the report to the Borno Government.

Bishop, if Christians didn’t receive compensation from the Borno Government after the 2006 Danish cartoon crisis, one is tempted to wonder what the situation is under a more vicious Boko Haram that has caused more havoc on communities that include Christians.

My brothers, those who are not from Borno State may not know, but you and I know better. In the history of Borno State, there is no Governor that has been fair to the Christian Community in this State as much as Governor Kashim Shettima. I am saying this in the presence of God Almighty and this is nothing but the truth. Governor Shettima, in the history of Borno, is the only Governor that has sponsored highest number of Christian Pilgrims every year since 2011. I am speaking boldly without fear or favour because as CAN Chairman I do not receive salary or kobo from Government or any institution, but the facts need to be told. This Governor has shown compassion to the Christian Community. For example, when Gwoza people were driven from their ancestral homes, they fled to Maiduguri, and the Governor personally came to CAN Centre in Jerusalem ward two times in June and July 2014. He gave N10 million for their upkeep at first instance, by the victims were not many. By the end of October 2014, the IDPs from Gwoza increased to 42,000 in that camp alone. Governor Shettima came again and gave another N10 million. He also gave additional N5 million for Christians from Borno who fled to Cameroon to be returned home. He gave another N5 million for non-indigenes who fled to Cameron to come back to Nigeria. The Governor even directed the Borno State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA to be supplying food directly to the IDPs in under the Christian leadership. In fact, the Governor insisted that he wanted Christian IDPs to stay together with their Muslim counterparts in various designated IDP camps here in Maiduguri but we the leaders felt it wise to separate Christian IDP’S to avoid frictions between displaced persons dealing with trauma.

Earlier, you said Governor Ali Modu Sheriff didn’t pay any compensation to Christians after the 2006 crisis which led to destruction of 56 churches, we know Churches and Mosques were destroyed by Boko Haram from 2011 to date under Governor Kashim Shettima, has any of these churches been rebuilt by the State Government just like mosques are being rebuilt?

On the Churches that were razed down, we had a meeting with Governor Shettima on how his administration can come in to assist in rebuilding some of these churches. Last year when the Governor visited Gwoza, Askira -Uba  and Chibok Local Government Areas for On-The- Spot- Assessment of destructions, he saw how some of these churches were dilapidated, some burnt down to ashes, in fact, some churches were not only razed down but Grader was used to pull down the whole structures to ground zero as if that church  never existed there. Like in Gwoza, the report we received was that after some of the churches were demolished, the terrorists packed the whole debris and threw it far away from the premises.

During Governor Shettima’s visit to these areas, he released N100 million for the rebuilding of some of these churches. A committee was set up for that purpose, I am a member of the committee headed by a permanent Secretary, Mr. Justus Zare as Chairman, and I am happy to inform you that presently we have used that money to rebuild 11 key churches which our people are now using for their worship services. I am surprised when some people were saying why not rebuilding all the churches, we cannot do that because there were so many places that are still unsafe for people to return, and you cannot expect us to go to the Christian communities of the fringes of Sambisa Forest to start rebuilding their destroyed churches, when the security situation has not improved.

After, the initial N100m, Governor Kashim Shettima graciously approved another N105 million for the 2nd phase of rebuilding destroyed churches. This was made possible when CAN officials led by my humble self-had a meeting with him on Thursday 30th March, 2017 at the Government House. So far, the governor has released N210 million for reconstruction of our burnt churches.

He also approved the sponsorship of all our local pastors to participate in the 2017 Jerusalem Pilgrimage. During the meeting, Governor Shettima approved allocation of Certificates of Occupancy (C of O) and land for church buildings in the state. This has never happened in the history of Borno since 1979. We are very grateful indeed. In fact, one of my neighbour who was a Journalist with Abuja based newspaper, died last year. He was a Christian, and when the Governor heard of it, he delegated some of his aides and gave the family the sum of N1 million for the burial. So also, when Arch Bishop Emmanuel Kana Mani (whom I succeeded as CAN chairman) died, the Governor visited the family residence in Maiduguri and gave N10 million for the family, I was among those who welcomed him at the Bishop’s Court. He gave N5 million for the upkeep of his family, while the other N5 million was for the preparation of his funeral.

There was a time we complained to him to give us additional Christian Permanent Secretaries, initially we had only one in the state, and he immediately approved additional three. As it is now, we have five Christian Permanent Secretaries in Borno civil service and we have to appreciate him, yes.

Sheriff has no good intention for PDP – Adeyeye

National Caretaker Committee of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) said National Chairman, Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff, has no good intentions for the party.

Publicity Secretary of the committee, Mr Dayo Adeyeye, stated this in a news conference on Tuesday in Abuja.

Speaking at the backdrop of a statement credited to Sheriff on his 2019 presidential ambition, Adeyeye said that all efforts of the national chairman were geared towards his hidden ambition.

He said that Sheriff was holding PDP to ransom because he wanted to hijack the party and use it for his selfish interest.

“We had raised the concern that Sheriff was not interested in conducting a national convention that will be in the interest of the party and all members.

“He was planning a convention that will put his cronies in critical party positions who will then rubber-stamp his candidacy when the time to pick the PDP candidate for 2019 Presidential Election comes.

“We are worried that some important party leaders also could not see beyond the facade, tagging along with Sheriff as he drags the party through the mud in his bid at achieving his selfish ambition.

“ We hope perceptible minds in the party can now see why it is extremely dangerous to trust Sheriff with the organization of any convention,’’ he said.

Adeyeye said that having Sheriff as PDP presidential candidate would be a real delight for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“It is as good as having your sparring partner as your opponent in a major bout.

“We want to make a serious contention for power in 2019. We don’t want to field a candidate who is the captain of the second team of the ruling party,’’ he said.

On the allegation that the caretaker committee was already boasting of going to obtain victory on the party’s leadership crisis at the Supreme Court, Adeyeye said it was blackmail from Sheriff’s group.

According to him, it is rather the Sheriff group that is already blackmailing the Supreme Court on the matter the way they did to the Court of Appeal in the Ondo governorship in 2016.

“They did the same against the second panel for which the Supreme Court awarded costs of over N20 million against them and their lawyers.

“They were the ones celebrating that appeal court judgment even before it was given. They said they knew the judgment.

“Their subtle blackmail of Supreme Court is unbecoming.’’

Dr Cairo Ojougboh, acting National Deputy Chairman of the party, in a separate news conference also in Abuja, accused the caretaker committee of boasting about the party leadership crisis now before the Supreme Court.

Ojougboh alleged that the caretaker committee was already boasting that the judgment rejected by the Court of Appeal would be adopted by the Supreme Court.

“We make bold to say nobody can buy the Supreme Court and the Supreme Court cannot be bought.

“The PDP has implicit confidence in the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Samuel Onnoghen and his colleagues in the Supreme Court.

“We, therefore, advice Makarfi and his co-travelers that their wishful judgment which they are parading will remain in the trash can,” Ojougboh said.

Meanwhile, the PDP members and their leaders in the South-South said they remained committed to the party and the resolutions of the May 21, 2016 national convention in Port Harcourt.

National Vice Chairman of the party in the zone, Chief Emmanuel Ogidi, stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

He said all party members in South-South were under the authority of the National Caretaker Committee headed by Sen. Ahmed Makarfi, which was constituted at the Port Harcourt convention.

He assured that the loyalty of members to the committee would be sustained until the verdict of the Supreme Court on the appeal before it on the recent judgment of the Court of Appeal.

The Court of Appeal in Port Harcourt had on Feb. 17, 2017, ruled that Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff remained the authentic chairman of the PDP.

The court also directed that status quo before the national convention in Port Harcourt, which sacked the leadership of the PDP and constituted the caretaker committee, should remain.

But, a minority judgment by a one of the judges, out of the three justices of the Appeal Court that heard the case, recognised the resolutions and actions taken at the Port Harcourt convention.

The judge held that as somebody appointed to administer the party for about three months and organise a national convention, Sheriff had by the resolution of the convention, seized to be chairman of the party.

Ogidi expressed optimism that the final verdict of the court on the issue would vindicate the position of majority of the party’s members, and would uphold the minority judgment at the Appeal Court.

According to him, the minority judgment captured the crux of the matter and it is the way to go to restore sanctity in the PDP.

On the merger talks between PDP and some political parties, Ogidi said that it was real but that the merging parties would adopt PDP as their new party.

According to him, PDP is the brand and cannot be changed. Yes, other parties will merge with us but the name PDP will be retained after the fusion. (NAN)

PDP crisis: Sheriff frustrating peace process, says Makarfi

The chairman of the caretaker committee of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ahmed Makarfi has accused the party’s national chairman, Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff of frustrating the party’s peace process.

Makarfi, who made the accusation in Abuja on Wednesday while meeting some Northern leaders of the PDP, said Sheriff reneged on a proposal by former President Goodluck Jonathan.

He told the gathering that Sheriff refused to abide by an arrangement where both of them would resign their positions. He also blamed the Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson for presenting a convention report to Sheriff without consultation.

Said he, “When Dickson came to meet me on his committee’s report, I told him, you are one of the governors that met with former president Goodluck Jonathan and he spelt out the proposal of peace plan which he communicated to the National Assembly caucus, communicated to us (caretaker committee) and other organs of the party.

“And I asked him, are you now removing yourself from that? Why didn’t you table what you have before your colleagues? I also asked him whether he had taken pains to read the Port Harcourt Appeal Court judgement and he said no.

“That judgement is based on two premises which we did not accept. The first premise, which we did not accept in our appeal to the Supreme Court, that the tenure of three members of the NWC will expire in august this year and 18 will expire in July 2018.

“If you now propose to hold convention in June, what are you going to achieve? How will the June convention is different from last year’s in Portharcourt and he said he didn’t think about that.

“And if he didn’t think about it, he shouldn’t do anything that will go against court of appeal judgment. What that judgement stipulates is a return to a status quo ante. What the court means is that all the national officers before May 21 must return to office. What Sheriff is doing is against the judgement, all his actions run foul against the judgement.

“The proposal on the way forward is to revert to the status quo as pronounced by the court of appeal. This is what I told Dickson, that he should go back to his colleagues governors and other organs of the party to clear the issue. As far as we are concerned, the caretaker committee has no position other than what the organs of the party.

“President Jonathan, after meeting with the governors, at about 1 am, called me and told me about the resolution they have reached, which he said will be forwarded to the NASS causus and other organs of the party as part of political solution. Some of the resolution is that the judgement of appeal court must be respected to prevent anybody from coming tomorrow to rubbish the party with litigation.

“Again, having reverted to the status quo, everybody will now formally resign. If everybody will resign, then the solicitors of the organs of the party will now sit down and look at all the legal issues involved and then draw up a MoU that will serve as settlement of parties. This will be deposited at the Supreme Court as the settlement of the crisis.

“Even if this is not provided in the constitution of the party, INEC is going to accept it and no one is going to rubbish PDP on that.

“In response, I told the former president that the caretaker committee has nothing against his proposal but that it will be presented before the organs and if accepted, the caretaker committee will stand by it.

“Former President Jonathan said he told Sheriff to go and consult and after his reply, he will get back to him. Uptill now he has not gotten back to him. What it means is that perhaps, he did not get positive response from Sheriff.”

Some of those present at the meeting were chairman former minister of police affairs, Adamu Maina Waziri; former minister of information, Prof Jerry gana; Aminu Wali; former PDP youth leader, Abdullahi Maibasira; Sen Saidu Kumo; Sen Aruwa; chairman of former ministers, Kabiru Turaki; former governor of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Bala Mohammed; former governor of Adamawa Boni Haruna.
