  • Niger spends N2bn. on reconstruction of Minna-Bida road – Commissioner

    The Niger Government is spending about N2 billion on the reconstruction of the 84 kilometer Minna-Bida road, Alhaji Ibrahim Balarabe, the state Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, has said.

    Balarabe made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Minna on Wednesday.

    He said that the road had been in deplorable condition due to the activities of heavy duty trucks plying it.

    He explained that the project had reached about 75 per cent completion and expressed satisfaction with the level of the work done so far on the road.

    “Our major challenges are the excesses of the heavy duty vehicle operators coming from Lagos to different part of the country as the state remains the gateway.

    ” We are spending billions of naira yearly to repair federal and state roads as a result of heavy duty trucks being loaded above their approved capacity,’’ he said.

    The commissioner called on leaders of heavy duty trucks association to caution their members on the danger of overloading.

    Balarabe called on road users to adhere to the traffic rules and regulations, to avoid unnecessary road accidents.

  • Niger spends N1 bn on dualisation of Minna old Airport road

    The Niger Government says it has spent N1 billion on the dualisation of the 2.5 kilometer Minna old Airport road.

    Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure Development, Alhaji Ibrahim Balarabe said this on Wednesday in Minna in an interview with the News men.

    He said that the road had been in deplorable condition for almost two decades and its upgrade would enhance socio-economic activities in the state.

    Balarabe said that before the reconstruction, most residents found it very difficult to use the road especially during rainy seasons and was confident that the new road would ease their pains.

    “I appeal to residents there to desist from dumping refuse on waterways to ensure the safety of the road,” the commissioner added.

  • Niger Assembly confirms 14 commissioner nominees

    Niger State House of Assembly on Monday confirmed 14 out of the 15 commissioner nominees submitted for screening and confirmation by the state governor, Abubakar Sanni Bello.

    A nominee, Mrs. Rosely Sani, who has not been confirmed, has a pending petition against her nomination from people in her local government area.

    The Speaker of the House, Rt. Honorable Ahmed Marafa,  said the petition had been forwarded to the House Committee on Public Petitions and the outcome would determine if the nominee will be confirmed or not.

    Those confirmed on Monday are – Kabir Musa, Barrister Danmalam Nasara, Alhaji Ibrahim Balarabe, Ramatu Yar’Adua, Mamman Musa, Jonathan Vatsa, Fatima Madugu, Dr. Mustapha Jibrin and Abubakar Azozo.

    Others are – Haliru Jikantoro, Mohammed Nda, Aliyu Abdullahi, DR. Aliyu Tangwagi and Abdulmalik Usman  Cheche.

    The new commissioners will be sworn in later in the week by the governor.
