  • Kwara communities protest Emir’s proposed takeover of land

Communities in Moro local government area of Kwara State on Wednesday faulted the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari’s decision to lay claims to land in the area.

Residents of the communities protested the decision and carried placards denouncing the Emir’s alleged subjugation of their history.

The communities under the aegies of  Moro Concerned Elders’ Movement (MCEM) claimed there was no historical evidence to support the monarch’s claims.

Addressing journalists in Ilorin, the state capital, President of MCEM, Alhaji Isiaka Jimoh, said “Moro local government area is populated mainly by Yoruba settlers who existed independent of Ilorin.

“History shows that such communities like Shao, Okutala, Oloru, Jebba, Babaloke and others had their respective traditional rulers who carried out general administration of their respective communities.

“Five per cent of monthly deductions from the council allocation were mainly being used by the Ilorin Emirate Council with no single traditional ruler from the local government benefiting.”

Jimoh urged the state government to operate a uniform law that will treat and see Moro as part and parcel of the state, in accordance with the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

He added: “We use this medium to call on the state government to do the needful by urgently addressing the various issues we have raised and analysed, as so doing is not only worthy but shall bring out the best in any listening and responsive government that is desirous to promote harmonious and all-inclusive governance within its territory.

“We viewed the continued silence of the state government as a clear sign of insensitivity, impunity and indiscretion on the part of the government.”

The MCEM president demanded the creation of Moro traditional council, beneficial utilisation of the five percent deduction from the monthly federal allocation due to the council, addressing the alleged diversion of the five percent allocation currently being remitted to the Ilorin Emirate, commencement of investigation by the anti-corruption agencies on the alleged misappropriation of funds due to the local government from 2003 to 2015 and future deductions of five percent from the council to be remitted directly to the Moro local government traditional council.

Others are immediate withdrawal of the district heads from the council in compliance with the Kwara State whitepaper of December 17, 1987; immediate return of the pre-1984 3rd class grading of both Ohoro of Shao and Oba of Jebba and immediate upgrading of the duo to first class status like their counterparts in other parts of the state.

He also urged the state government to urgently address all the developmental deficiencies in the area.

The Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, on Friday turbaned the first African professor of geology, Mosobalaje Oyawoye, as the first Baba Adinni of Kwara.

In his address, Sulu-Gambari said  Oyawoye was considered for the title because of his notable contributions to the development of Islamic education in the state.

The monarch said Oyawoye deserved the honour for his numerous contributions to the  Jamatul Nasir Islam, among which was building  a mosque for the Islamic group.

He said he was proud of the professor’s feat in the state and country as a whole.

Sulu-Gambari recalled that Oyawoye was among the first scholars to portray Kwara in positive light when the state was still young.

Responding, Oyawoye said he was overwhelmed with the title bestowed on him, particularly as it was done by the emir.

‘Emir of Ilorin didn’t endorse PDP candidate’

The Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, has denied endorsing the Kwara State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Senator Simeon Ajibola.

The monarch condemned a story credited to him by an online medium that he had endorsed the PDP governorship flag bearer.

Ajibola, at the weekend, visited the emir in his palace.

But the monarch’s spokesperson and Magaji Nda of Ilorin, Alhaji Salihu Woru Mohammed, described the story as irresponsible, concocted, inciting and an attempt to drag the emir into the murky water of politics.
