  • Niger governor, deputy win polling units for APC

    Niger state Governor, Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello and his deputy, Alhaji Mohammed Ketso has won their polling units for APC.

    In the Governorship Polling unit, Alkali Mustafa Unit, APC got 318 votes while PDP got  33 votes for the governorship while in the House of Assembly election, APC got 247 votes while PDP got 39 votes.

    In the Deputy Governor’s polling unit, APC got 340 votes while PDP got 0 votes for the governorship election while for the State house of Assembly, APC got 334 votes while PDP got 0 vote.

    Niger confirms N5.7bn pension fund missing

    Niger State government on Tuesday confirmed that a pension fund totaling N5.77 billion is missing.

    The money is 7.5 per cent employer/employee Contributory Pension Scheme deduction made on behalf of the Niger State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and local government councils in the state from 2007 to 2015.

    However, the state government has put in place a committee to ensure that the stolen funds are recovered and returned to government coffers.

    The Niger State Acting Governor, Alhaji Mohammed Ketso, disclosed these in Minna at the opening of a sensitization workshop on Effective Pension Management and Administration in Niger State.

    According to him, N5.779 billion and not N6.2 billion was the funds not remitted to the Pension Board during the period.

    Ketso added that the discovery followed the forensic audit of the pension scheme transactions carried out by the state government.

    He said the government has set up a committee to ensure that the stolen funds are recovered and returned to the government’s coffers.

    He said: “Let me reassure our pension contributors and all Nigerlites that we will ensure that every amount of money deducted as employers/employees contributions since the introduction of the contributory pension scheme in 2007 till date will be accounted for and applied judiciously in accordance with the law for the benefit of the workers who have worked hard and saved for their retirement.”

     

     

     

     

  • Alumni celebrate Bida Poly at 40

    The Niger State Deputy Governor, Alhaji Mohammed Ketso, and the Rector, Abubakar Dzukogi Federal Polytechnic Bida, are to be honoured along with other distinguished Nigerians during a dinner to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the institution on Saturday.

    The dinner and award night is part of a four-day programme by the institution’s alumni association to mark the anniversary and give back to their alma mater.

    Other programmes of activities include: a road show holding today; Jumat Service and a novelty football match between members of staff and the *alumni tomorrow and a lecture scheduled for Saturday. Curtains will lower on the anniversary with an inter-dominational service on Sunday.

    President of the alumni association, Mr Koce Henry Doko said the anniversary would serve as a platform to re-launch the association, which he said had been moribund for some time.

    Koce said the body was however happy that the Polytechnic had been able to keep its standard.

    “Over the years, Federal Polytechnic Bida has grown structurally.  Bida Poly has always been known for its standard and we are glad that the standard is still there. We are proud of the Bida standard; it has kept us afloat all these years.”

    He also said that after the anniversary, branches of the alumni would be launched across the country.

  • 10 die in army and villagers clash

    At least 10 people have been confirmed dead, while two soldiers are reportedly missing in the clash between the army and villagers in Kpaidna village, Bosso local government area of Niger State.

    Military sources told The Nation that five rifles were allegedly missing during the clash.

    Unconfirmed reports said majority of the dead victims are army personnel who were attacked with knives and cutlasses by villagers who mistook them for armed fulani herdsmen.

    Over 40 persons have been arrested by the army in connection with the attack.

    Following the clash between soldiers and the villagers, the state government convened an emergency Security Council meeting where the matter was reviewed and the Deputy Governor, Alhaji Mohammed Ketso, appealed to the Brigade Commander to exercise restraint and appealed to his men to remain calm.
