  • Fire razes 70 shops in Kano market

    The Kano State Fire Service said fire has destroyed 70 temporary shops at Yan’Katako Market in Rijayar Lemo area of Kano.

    The Spokesman of the State Fire Service, Alhaji Saidu Mohammed confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano on Thursday.

    The spokesman said 30 of the shops were completely razed down while 40 were slightly burnt.

    “We received a distress call in the early hours of Thursday at about 03:45 am from one Bashir Suleiman that there was fire outbreak at the market.

    “On receiving the information, we quickly sent some of our personnel and fire fighting vehicles to the scene of the incident at about 03:52 am to quench the fire so as not to affect other shops,“ he said.

    He advised traders at the market and other residents to be more careful and desist from using instruments capable of triggering fire as a way of guarding against future occurrence.

    Mohammed also advised the people to keep fire buckets, blankets and extinguishers that would enable them curtail any fire outbreak before calling on the fire service.

    Mohammed said the cause of the fire is being investigated. (NAN)

  • Early morning fire destroys one room, seven shops in Kano

    The Kano State Fire Service on Wednesday said that an early morning fire affected one room and seven shops at Weatherhead Road, SabonGari, in the Kano metropolis.

     

    The spokesman of the service, Alhaji Saidu Mohammed, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano.

    Mohammed explained that the incident happened at about 2:19 a.m. on Wednesday, though he could not immediately estimate the value of the goods lost in the incident.

     

    He said the fire affected one room in the residential building, while seven shops were slightly burnt.

    Mohammed said that the quick intervention of firemen prevented the spread of the inferno.He added that the service had commenced investigation into the cause of the fire incident.

    We received a distress call in the early hours of this morning (Wednesday) from one Mr Wale Adebayo at about 2:19 a.m. that there was a fire outbreak at a dwelling house.

     

    “Upon receiving the information, we quickly dispatched a fire engine to the scene, to bring the fire under control,’’ he said.

    In a related development, Mohammed disclosed that at about 9:37 a.m. also on Wednesday, a dwelling house (one parlour and one room) and a warehouse at Bello Road also got burnt.

     

    He, however, advised residents to be more careful, especially during the dry season and to desist from using instruments that could trigger fire incidents in their neighbourhoods.

     

    Mohammed said the advice became necessary because the harmattan season was fast approaching, hence the need for residents to be more cautious, even while cooking.

  • Kano: Nine die, N108m property lost in August

    Nine persons died, while property worth N108million was lost to fire outbreaks in Kano State in August, the state fire service said on Monday.

    The Public Relations Officer of the agency, Alhaji Saidu Mohammed, who disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria  in Kano, said that 12 houses and 10 shops were also razed during the month.

    He attributed the fire outbreaks to the use of inferior electrical materials, use of boiling rings in houses, poor handling of electrical appliances and cooking.

    Mohammed said the fire service was, however, able to rescue 112 persons and goods worth N300 million in 22 fire outbreaks in August.

    According to him, the service received 82 rescue calls and 18 false alarms from residents during the period.

    The spokesman advised the public to be careful with fire and to desist from storing petroleum products in their cars and houses.

  • Boy drowns in a well in Kano

    An eight year-old boy in Tamburawa Gabas town of Kano State, Sadi Yusuf, on Tuesday, lost his life after falling into a well.

    Spokesman of Kano State Fire Service, Alhaji Saidu Mohammed, told our reporter that the incident occurred at about 7.30 am.

    He said the deceased was sent by his mother to go and fetch water in the well.

    “We received a distress call in the early hours of today (Tuesday) from a ward head, Isa Garba, at about 7:30am that a boy had fallen into a well.

    ”On receiving the information, we quickly sent our rescue team to the scene at about 7:42am.

    “Yusuf was rescued unconscious and later confirmed dead; his corpse was handed to the Ward Head, Isa Garba,” the spokesman said.

    Mohammed therefore advised parents who had wells in their homes, to raise their height and provide covers for same, to protect children.

  • Kano Fire Service saves 180 lives, N86m goods in March — Official

    The Kano State Fire Service said on Friday that it saved 180 lives and goods worth N86 million from 110 fire outbreaks in the state in March.

    The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the service, Alhaji Saidu Mohammed, however, told the News men in Kano that 14 lives were lost in the incidents.

    Mohammed said 41 houses and 69 shops were affected in the fire outbreaks while properties valued at N29 million were destroyed during the period.

    He said that the service received 124 rescue calls and 24 false alarms from residents during the month.

    Mohammed said that the major causes of the fire were the use of inferior electrical materials, poor handling of electrical appliances, cooking gas and boiling ring as well as accidents.

    He advised the general public to be careful in this dry season in handling fire and stop storing petroleum products to avert fire outbreak.

    Kano Fire Service saves 158 lives, N809m worth of goods in January

    The Kano State Fire Service said on Monday that it saved 158 lives and goods worth N809 million from the 93 fire outbreaks in the state in January.

    The Public Relations Officer of the service, Alhaji Saidu Mohammed, however told newsmen in Kano that 12 lives were lost in the incidents.

    Mohammed said about 110 shops were affected in the fire outbreaks while property valued at N382 million were destroyed during the period.

    The public relation’s officer did not give the actual number of residential houses that were affected.

    He said that the service received 89 rescue calls and 19 false alarms from the residents during the month.

    Mohammed attributed the major causes of the fire outbreaks to the use of inferior electrical materials, poor handling of electrical appliances, cooking gas and boiling ring as well as accidents.

    He advised the residents to always be careful with electrical appliances in their homes and shops.

    Fire fighters rescue woman from pit- latrine

    A 48-year- old woman, Aisha Usman, was on Monday rescued from a collapsed pit-latrine by men of the Kano State Fire Service.

    The Public Relations Officer of the state Fire Service, Alhaji Saidu Mohammed, said the incident occurred when the woman was trying to use the facility.

    He said: “The incident occurred while the woman was trying to use the rest room at her residence in Sharifawa in Gaya Local Government Area of the state.”

    “Upon receiving a distress call from a relative shortly after the incident at 6:45 p.m. on Sunday, we immediately dispatched a rescue team from our office. They swung into action and eventually rescued the woman.

    He, however, expressed happiness that the woman was rescued without sustaining injuries.

    “We rescued the woman and handed her over to the husband,” he added.
