    Court remands five men for abduction

    A Gudu Upper Area Court in Abuja on Tuesday remanded five men in prison for allegedly abducting two men and stealing 65 cows.

    The men are Isiya Abubakar, Bello Umar, Avdo Musa, Wakili Nmaje and Idi Ahmadu‎.

    They were arraigned on a five-count charge of criminal conspiracy, kidnapping, theft, robbery and unlawful possession of arms.

    The Prosecutor, Umoh Inah, told court that one Koge and Ampur Buburmi of Kushika Village, Abuja, were kidnapped since March 12.‎

    Inah said that investigations by a team from the office of the inspector- general of police revealed that the suspects conspired and kidnapped the two who were yet to be found.

    He also said that no fewer than 65 cows belonging to the abducted men were stolen by the defendants.

    The prosecutor said further that five other members of the gang were believed to be keeping the stolen cows.

    He said the offences contravened Sections 97, 273, 287, 298 and 319 of the Penal Code.

    The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty. (NAN)

    The Judge, Alhaji Umar Kagarko, adjourned the case till April 18 for consideration of bail of the suspects.

    He fixed hearing of the case to June 14.

    Cleaner remanded for rape of 6-year-old girl

    A Gudu Upper Area Court, Abuja, on Wednesday ordered the remand of 24-year-old cleaner, Olamide Balogun ‎in prison for allegedly raping a 6-year-old girl.
    The judge, Alhaji Umar Kagarko, adjourned the case till June 15 for hearing.

    The defendant of Mabushi, Abuja, was arraigned on a count charge of rape, an offence he denied committing.

    The prosecutor, Oyeyemi Adeniyi, told the court that one Loveth Abdul reported the matter at the Mabushi Police Station on Jan. 23.

    He said the plaintiff discovered that the defendant had been having carnal knowledge of the 6-year-old girl, whenever she was left alone in the house.

    Adeniyi said that the offence contravened Section 283 of the Penal Code.

    Bash Ali docked for alleged criminal trespass, granted bail

    A Gudu Upper Area Court, Abuja, on Wednesday granted N100, 000 bail to a boxer, Bashiru Ali (a.k.a.Bash Ali) docked for alleged criminal trespass.‎

    The judge, Alhaji Umar Kagarko, ordered the defendant to provide one surety in like sum that must reside within the court’s jurisdiction.
    He adjourned the case till June 15 for hearing.
    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), recalls that the defendant was arraigned on April 3, on a four-count charge bordering on criminal trespass, intentional insult, inciting public disturbance and refusal to make statement.
    The judge had adjourned ruling on the defendant’s bail application after the defence counsel, Mr Tajudeen Adegbite, applied for his bail on self-recognition.

    The prosecutor, Oyeyemi Adeniyi, had told the court that the defendant criminally trespassed into the office of the Honourable Minister of Sport and Youth Development, Federal Secretariat, Abuja, on April 3.
    He said the defendant forcefully entered the office without the minister’s invitation and intentionally insulted the minister.
    Adeniyi said the defendant’s action attracted crowd and disrupted the activities of the ministry before the police within the premises intervened.
    He said that the defendant refused to make statement to the police when he was arrested.
    He added that the offences contravened Sections 348, 399, 114 and 143 of the Penal Code.
    The defendant denied committing the offences.

  • Man docked over N.48m fraud

    A 46-year-old man, Ibrahim Adeparus, was on Monday arraigned in a Gudu Upper Area Court, Abuja, over alleged N486, 000 fraud.

    Adeparus, who denied committing the offence, was granted bail in the sum of N50, 000.
    The judge, Alhaji Umar Kagarko, who granted the bail, also ordered the defendant to provide one surety that must reside within the court’s jurisdiction.
    He adjourned the case till June 1 for hearing.

    The defendant of Apo Dutse, Abuja, was arraigned on a two-count charge of criminal breach of trust and cheating.

    The prosecutor, Donatus Abbah, told the court that one Bola Olajide of Apo, Abuja, reported the matter at the Apo Police Station on March 6.

    He said that the plaintiff met the defendant at a shoprite in Abuja sometime in 2014, and they exchanged phone numbers and agreed to meet at the defendant’s house, which they did.

    Abbah added that the defendant gave the plaintiff two cowries and promised to make the plaintiff’s business flourish.
    The prosecutor said that the plaintiff alleged that he gave the defendant N486, 000.‎

    He said instead of the plaintiff’s business flourishing as promised, the business began to deteriorate. ‎
    The prosecutor said the alleged offences contravened Sections 312 and 322 of the Penal Code.

    Court orders refund of N4m debt to lawyer

    A Gudu Upper Area Court, Abuja, on Tuesday ordered, Salisu Zuru, to pay four million naira debt to Paul Golu, a lawyer.

    The Upper Area Court judge, Alhaji Umar Kagarko, made the order after Zuru pleaded guilty to the claims against him.

    Golu of Area 3, Garki, Abuja, who is the plaintiff and counsel, had told the court that Zuru collected four million Naira from him sometime in 2015.

    He said the defendant, a staff of the National Assembly Complex, Abuja, collected the money from him on behalf of Adamu Entonu for the purchase of election forms for the Federal elections.

    He further said Zuru, who served as an intermediary in the transaction, made an undertaking to pay back the money on or before the conclusion of the said elections which held in 2015.

    The plaintiff said Zuru, however, defaulted without giving any reason, adding that the said money was client’s monies in his custody.

    He, however, urged the court to compel Zuru to refund the said money with a monthly 10 percent interest and one million Naira as damages.

    The Counsel to the defendant, Ahmed Jega, admitted the claims against his client, saying that Zuru was ready to pay back the said four million Naira.

    He said the action of Zuru was not intentional, adding that he did not pay the money back due to the said Entuno not paying as agreed.

    He, however, urged the court to do justice and look into the 10 percent interest charge and one million Naira for damages that the plaintiff demanded, saying it was too much.

    Following Jega’s application, the plaintiff urged the court to go ahead with its order and remove the prayer he had earlier made for payment of interest charges and damages.

  • Two plumbers in jail for impersonation

    A Gudu Upper Area Court in the Federal Capital Territory on Thursday sentenced two plumbers, Mohammed Awalu and Mohammed Dauda, to four weeks imprisonment for impersonating soldiers.

    Awalu, 23, and Dauda, 29, pleaded guilty to the two-count charge of criminal conspiracy and impersonating a public servant contrary to section 97 and 132 of the penal code.

    The presiding judge, Alhaji Umar Kagarko, who convicted them, however, gave them an option of fine of N40, 000 each.

    The Prosecutor, Oyeyemi Adeniyi, had told the court that men of the Nigerian Army Guard Brigade reported the matter at the police station on March 9, 2016.

    Adeniyi said that the convicts were arrested by Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) operatives and handed over to military authorities when it was discovered that they were not soldiers.

    He told the court that both men were dressed in military regalia with the intension to release one of their friends detained by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
