  • Kogi guber: Bello faces tough battle

As aspirants prepare for the Kogi governorship primaries ahead of the November 2, 2019 elections, Assistant Editor, Dare Odufowokan, reports that for the sitting governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, who is seeking re-election on the ticket of All Progressives Congress (APC), it seems to be a tough battle

FOLLOWING Independent National Electoral Commission’s announcement of the November 2 date for the governorship elections in Kogi State, many politicians have come out to declare their interest in the governorship seat of the state. Festus Okoye, chairman of INEC’s Information and Voters’ Education Committee, made the announcement. One of the aspirants that have indicated interest is the incumbent Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello. He officially declared interest to seek re-election come November 2. Expectedly, he wants to run on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

While announcing his second term bid at the Banquet Hall of the Government House, Lokoja, Bello said he consulted very widely with the leadership of his party at all levels and also with his people at the grassroots before making up his mind to run again. He said he got the nod of the people of Kogi State that he should run for another term.

“I would like to inform the good people of the state, the All Progressive Congress (APC) family and supporters from the state, the local government areas down to the wards and polling units, as well as various stakeholders, opinion moulders, families and friends of my interest to run for a second term in office as the Executive Governor of Kogi State,” the governor said.

Sources within the governor’s camp revealed to The Nation that prior to his public declaration this week, he had met with party leaders, chieftains and several other stakeholders within the Kogi State chapter of the APC, to seek their support for his re-election bid.

“I can tell you confidently that majority of the leaders and chieftains of the APC in Kogi State are ready to work for the re-election of Governor Yahaya Bello. We strongly believe he is the only candidate that can win Kogi for the APC come November 2. He will win the ticket of the party and go on to win the general election,” our source, a party executive committee member, said.

    Faleke, others want APC ticket

But if Bello and his supporters are hoping that he will pick the governorship ticket of his party with ease, then they may have to think twice. This is because a couple of prominent chieftains of the ruling APC are now eyeing the party’s ticket ahead of the November 2 governorship election in the North-central state.

One of those said to be currently working round the clock within the party to garner support in his bid to snatch the ticket from the governor is Hon. James Faleke. Faleke, the current Member representing Ikeja Federal Constituency of Lagos State, was the running mate of Abubakar Audu in 2015 governorship race.

An associate of the Reps member told The Nation that he is currently consulting with party leaders and members across the state in his bid to galvanise the people behind him as he sought to fly the banner of the ruling party in the November 2 governorship election. Although he is yet to publicly announce his gubernatorial bid, party sources said he has informed party leaders and his disciples of his ambition.

Another APC chieftain, Babatunde Irukera, is also consulting ahead of APC’s primary election. Irukera, who is the first son of Elegbe of Egbe, a prominent traditional ruler in the state, according to his supporters, is determined to pick the ticket of the ruling party.

Similarly, former Commissioner for Agriculture in the state, Dr Tim Diche, has also joined the governorship race in the state. He is aspiring to be handed the APC ticket. Diche contested in the primary of the APC in 2015. He is from Adun-Woiwo in Bassa LGA of the state. He vowed to fast track development in the state when and if he eventually becomes the governor.

According to the former commissioner, his ambition is being boosted by the demands and calls from the people of the state who feel he has what it takes to pilot the affairs of the state better. “Kogi State is not working at the moment. I want to adopt a new governance strategy for the development and prosperity of Kogi State,” he said.

Also, a former Military Administrator of Oyo and old Ondo states, Ahmed Usman, has declared intention to contest the next governorship election in Kogi State on the platform of the ruling APC. The retired Army Colonel said his decision was informed by the current sufferings of the people of the state arising from bad leadership. “I am in the race to save the people of the state from this agony and squalor. I cannot fold my arms and watch the people continue to suffer,” he said.

The former Military Administrator, while urging party faithful to support him to get the ticket, promised that under his leadership, the state would witness accelerated development. “As a former military officer of the infantry corps, he would use his wealth of experience and exposure to mobilise the people of the state for development if given the mandate, promising to run a transparent government.”

    Audu’s son too

Outside the APC, the son of late former governor of the state, Prince Mustapha Audu, is also threatening the re-election bid of Governor Bello. Recently, the young politician announced that 17 political parties have adopted him as their preferred candidate and next governor of Kogi State. According to the candidate of the Young Progressives Party (YPP), Governor Bello should forget about being re-elected.

It would be recalled that Mustapha’s father, the late Abubakar Audu, participated in the 2015 Governorship Election in Kogi State as the candidate of the APC, but he died before INEC declared the election inconclusive. Governor Bello was brought into the race by the APC to replace him during the Supplementary Election that year.

“Today is the beginning of our freedom, Lugard House gate is open. We shall occupy it. We are tired of half salary, no school fees. We are tired of suicide in Kogi State. Today we are ready to move Kogi forward. I am contesting in order to liberate the people of the state from poverty and negligence by the present government of the state,” he said.

He pointed out that if elected, the issue of civil servants in the state would be solved immediately, particularly in the area of workers welfare and salary. He also promised to bring the dividends of democracy closer to the people as his administration will embark on meaningful development. He also assured the people of the state of his readiness to govern the state and bring meaningful development if given the chance.

    Aspirants divide Kogi APC

Following the sharp division that currently pervades the rank and file of the ruling party in the state over who should fly the banner of the APC come November 2, some stakeholders last Sunday said they were worried over the fortunes of the party in the state, urging the national leadership to intervene in the way aspirants are going about their gubernatorial ambition.

The Nation gathered that leaders and chieftains of the party, including members of the State Executive Committee, are currently divided as they all line up behind various aspirants of their choice. According to reliable party sources, unless something urgent is done to reunite the party; the governorship primary election may de dogged by a serious crisis.

Party elders, under the auspices of Kogi Rescue Group (KRG), said there was the need for genuine reconciliation in the party so that it would perform well in future polls. They claim the ruling party has never been this divided since its formation, urging the national leadership to call the gladiators to order before it is too late. A statement signed by Alhaji Yusuf Idah, on behalf of the group cautioned against using the results of the 2019 General Elections to rate the APC in the state.

The statement read in part, “During the general elections, the APC won seven House of Representatives seats out of the nine in the state. It lost West Senatorial and two seats of the House in the National Assembly elections. In the state Assembly election, the APC won all the 25 seats available. The election was, however, allegedly marred by violence.”

While calling on Comrade Adams Oshiomhole to call the governor to order, the group advised that Hon. James Faleke, a frontline aspirant and leader of a faction of the party, should be invited and discussed with in the interest of peace and unity within the party ahead of the November election. “Remove Faleke from the equation and the APC will be served the Adamawa and Bauchi dishes,” the group said.

The party elders accused Governor Bello of frustrating efforts made to reconcile aggrieved members of the party. “The National Working Committee must call all warring factions to a meeting and agree on the way forward. This is the major consideration to bring to the table if the APC must win the forthcoming governorship election and subsequent elections.”

    PDP talks tough

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has declared that it will end the reign of Governor Bello in the state by winning the November 2019 governorship election as it is determined to “salvage the state by enthroning a people-oriented government.” The party made the boast after a crucial meeting of Kogi PDP stakeholders in Abuja during the week.

Kola Ologbondiyan, the party’s spokeman, said leaders resolved to “forego all personal ambitions and work together for the interest of the party and the Kogi people ahead of the election.” He added that the party’s winning feats in Bauchi, Imo, Rivers, Adamawa, Bauchi and Osun states will be repeated in the forthcoming Kogi governorship election. According to him, PDP has the support of the people of the state, who are eager to be liberated from the misrule of the APC under Governor Yahaya Bello.

“As we all know, our people have gone through pains, pangs, acute poverty, hunger, dehumanization, brutalization, job losses, untimely deaths, suicide and all sorts of anguish as a result of the misrule of the incumbent APC government. The people of Kogi state are therefore looking up to the PDP for a rescue and we cannot afford to fail them. We must therefore not allow anything to demoralize us as the winning streaks, which our party displayed in Imo, Adamawa, Bauchi, Osun among others, will be repeated in Kogi state by the grace of Almighty God.

“In this race, we must also bear in mind that we have the support of the people. Kogi state has always been home to the PDP notwithstanding the temporary setback of the APC. We must therefore prepare ourselves, stand with the people and salvage our dear state from the pangs of misrule. Our people yearn to move forward and we must give them that leverage which they earnestly seek,” he said.

Similarly, a state chairmanship aspirant of the PDP in the State, Comrade Alfa Fidelis, said PDP will defeat Governor Bello come November if the ruling party presents the incumbent governor as its candidate. “It is an obvious fact that the last election was militarised. I also want to say that the PDP did not have someone who could stand and fight for them.”

He commended President Buhari for his “unwavering fight against corruption,” saying that his administration has keyed into the vision of the president for Nigeria as a nation renowned for “incorruptibility and development”.

He stated: “A set of leaders held the nation down for many decades; destroyed our public schools, public transport system, public healthcare system and almost endangered our generation with wanton corruption.

“The leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari has restored our pride as a nation. He has made a bold statement to the International community, that we are not all about corruption and that we have leaders who can live above corruption.

“President Muhammadu Buhari is not just a pride to our nation, but to the entire African continent. With him at the helm of affairs in Nigeria, the world is beginning to regain their trust in our dear nation”.

Governor Bello thanked the President for remaining undaunted by the “sustained resistance of corrupt people against his administration,” adding that the corrupt people are beginning to “settle in the same bucket to fight Africa’s most incorruptible President”.

He thanked the people of the state for supporting his administration, assuring them of more democracy dividends in the months ahead.

“Our administration is working hard to put the right foot forward for the betterment of our dear State. We have made tremendous progress in the sectors of agriculture, healthcare, education and transportation.

“The seeds we have sown in the past two and a half years are beginning to yield fruits. We have ensured security of lives and property like no other administration in the history of Kogi State. We shall continue to work for the greatness of our dear State.

“I urge the people of our dear state to remain steadfast on the part of truth, development and transparent governance. We have made a big difference from the years of no-clear-direction”, he said.

  • Bello: INEC acting a script for opposition in Kogi – UN group

Bello: INEC acting a script for opposition in Kogi – UN group

A non-profit organization, the National Rebirth Group (NRG), has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of acting a premeditated script prepared by opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in a bid to stop Kogi Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello from seeking re-election in 2020.

The group, with a United Nations consultative status, issued the statement through its National Publicity Secretary, Bekee Igwe, in Kogi the state capital.

In the statement, the group pointedly accused INEC of concocting a claim that Governor Bello registered twice, a criminal act that would make him ineligible to contest for a second term and thus pave way for the PDP to return to Kogi Government House.

NRG stated that its stand on the ongoing face-off between INEC and the Kogi Governor was based on findings from a study on the controversy, noting that there were gaps discovered which point to “possible collusion” and or “outright conspiracy” thereby exonerating Bello from any likely infraction.

“Why did INEC not react immediately the so called double registration took place? At whose instance did the indicted INEC officials carry out their nefarious act? Since INEC was aware that Governor Bello was registered to vote, why would he seek a second registration? Why would the electoral body wait for more than seven months before disciplining its staff or make the findings public?”

“The only possible conclusion to be drawn from this bizarre drama is a possible collusion and outright conspiracy, between INEC and the opposition in Kogi State which stands to benefit from the consequences arising there from”, declared the group.

The NRG’s spokesperson said the group was not impressed by INEC’s belated attempt to sanction its staff embroiled in the controversy, arguing that it was obvious that those disciplined were mere “fall guys” thereby giving the impression that INEC was working; a development it considered unsavory and highly condemnable.

“INEC wants Nigerians to believe it is decisive by sacking its staff. But, it is obvious they are fall guys sacrificed to achieve an evil aim. Ultimately, the aim is to rope in the governor and hand the state to the opposition. Otherwise, why would INEC be threatening Yahaya Bello who was not even in the country when the purported double registration took place? Clearly, the entire process is a sham”, he stated.

Why we endorsed Buhari – Smart Adeyemi

The former National Assembly member representing Kogi West Senatorial district, Senator Smart Adeyemi, on Wednesday said that the people endorsed President Muhammadu Buhari for another term in office because of his achievements in the last two years.

Speaking at the western senatorial district rally in Kabba, he said that the Buhari administration has made concerted efforts in diversifying the nation’s economy.

The administration, he said, has put in place holistic economic reforms capable of making Nigeria a self-sustaining country.

He described the pains occasioned by the economic recession as necessary and capable of leading the country out of the woods.

His words: “We want to tell the whole world that for us in Kogi West, we are impressed and pleased with your administration because you have exhibited justice, equity and fairness, you have given us a sense of belonging.

“You are committed to the socio-economic advancement of our state; we salute your courage for sanitising the civil service, we are determined to support President Muhammadu Buhari whenever he decides to contest”.

He said that the state governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello in about two years  in office has embarked on projects in areas and communities never been touched by past administrations in the state.

Speaking at the rally, Governor Bello said that his political opponents remain angry because he disagreed that the resources of the state be shared among few individuals.

He said the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had no prove of the allegation of double registration leveled against him.

According to him, “They said I engaged in double registration, INEC cannot and can never prove that; they are going against the will of God. They gave money to individuals to propagate the allegation, it is a white lie.

“On May 19, I was in Dubai but they went ahead to photoshop me in order to implicate me. They goofed”.

  • Kogi home to herdsmen – Bello

Kogi home to herdsmen – Bello

The Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Yahaya Bello has assured Fulani herdsmen of his administration’s commitment to their welfare.

Bello during an emergency state security stakeholders’ meeting at the government house, Lokoja, on Wednesday, said Kogi State will not follow suit in the enactment of anti-grazing laws, as others, including Benue State, saying herdsmen were welcome in any part of Kogi.

He asserted that the herdsmen can call their kinsmen displaced in other places, to Kogi.

One of the traditional rulers in attendance, Chief Ahmed Aku, who was earlier kidnapped by suspected herdsmen, had advised the governor to tow in the footstep of Benue and Ekiti governors.

“I will not enact any law to stop Fulani herdsmen from coming to Kogi State. I will not be part of any law that will forbid them from carrying out their normal business in Kogi State.

“Why don’t we develop a law that will make us live together harmoniously and tap from our different economic values? “The next ‘oil’ this country is rediscovering now is agriculture. So if you don’t want anybody to disrupt the farms, I beseech you to also allow the Fulani carry out their businesses,” said Bello.

He directed the ministries to ensure that the Fulani were integrated into the traditional council area of all the local government areas of the state, saying, “There must, henceforth, be a representative of Fulani in the local traditional council.

“This must also be replicated at the area traditional council, while the secretary to the State Government must see that a Fulani representative is present at the state council.

“This will ensure that the Fulani are aware of, and are part of decision making in the state”.

Bello extends curfew in Kogi Central indefinitely

Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello has extended indefinitely the curfew imposed on the five local government areas in the state’s Central Senatorial district.

Kingsley Fanwo, the Director General on Media and Publicity to the Governor, Friday in a release, stated that the extension of the 24 hour emergency curfew which was first issued on Wednesday night was to consolidate on the security gains recorded so far.

The governor thanked security agencies for their efforts at ridding Kogi Central of criminals and criminalities. He also thanked the citizens for cooperating with his administration to ensure a safer and better State.

Bello assured the people of the district that their sacrifices will be rewarded with better security in the area to enable them pursue their goals.

It would be recalled that the governor had imposed a 24 hour curfew on the district in the wake of a series of assassinations recorded in Okene and Okehi, during the preceding week, and some other security challenges.

“The curfew has been extended indefinitely to achieve even greater results”, the government stated.

‘No alternative to Accord Party in Kogi’

The Kogi State chapter of the Accord Party (AP) has held its state executive meeting on at its state secretariat in Lokoja.

The outgoing chairman of the party, Deacon Ambo odiah on Wednesday at the event charged members to work for the success of the party in coming election in the state.

The Legal Adviser, Abubakar Aliyu admonished party members to close ranks and ensure that the message of oneness “which the party stands for gets to every home in Kogi State.”

A chieftain of the party, Prince Mohammed Abdullahi reiterate the need for kogites to see the party as a platform that will right all the wrongs and ills being experienced currently.

He also debunked the allegations linking the state governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello with the Accord Party.

He said the reason behind such rumour was because the party shared premises used by the former during his quest for Lugard house in 2015.

According to him: “Accord Party has a political philosophy and a vibrant manifesto that is capable of reducing the challenges and difficulty being experienced under the APC-led government in the state”.

  • Bello seeks varsity status for FCE Okene

Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, has appealed to the Federal Government to convert the Federal College of Education in Okene to a university in order to boost educational development across the country.

He made the appeal during the 15th combined convocation of the college over the weekend in Okene.

The institution, he said, had what it takes in terms of staff and infrastructure, to become a university of education.

He noted that the college in the last four decades had contributed immensely to the training of qualified teachers for basic education, and was long overdue for the upgrade.

The governor reiterated the importance of education to national development, stressing that the sector topped the “five thematic areas of his new direction agenda policy”.

He praised the Provost, Dr Iyela Ajayi, for what he described as his selfless service that made the institution one of the best in the country.

In his address, the Governing Council Chair of the institution, Sa’ad Abubakar, said that in the past eight years, the college had enjoyed peace, harmony and uninterrupted academic calendar.

He added that the students were doing well academically.

He said: “I am highly impressed by the academic excellence demonstrated by students as exemplified by the result posted by the graduates of the college’s degree programmes. The first set of the graduates of the degree recorded five First Class, while the second set returned a record of 12 First Class. These impressive results are clear testimony of the high academic tone of the college which the governing council would maintain and even build upon”.

In his address, Ajayi appealed to the Federal Government to improve funding to the institution, saying that the internally generated revenue of the college was hardly enough in the face of competing demands.

“As a result of the expanding students’ population and the concomitant need for infrastructural facilities for teaching and learning, the present level of funding is hardly adequate. The financial resources at the disposal of the college can no longer cope with enormous resources involved in maintaining the utility services for our staff and students and also meeting the increasing demands for staff earned academic and other allowances,” he said.

Ajayi whose tenure ends next month, suggested to the government to make master degree as the minimum qualification for teaching in colleges of education to improve quality of teaching.

He praised Bello for approving the construction of a pedestrian bridge near the college’s main gate – to prevent accidents and loss of lives – and a police post.

Kogi Speaker smuggled out as suspected thugs invade chambers

Suspected thugs invaded the Kogi state house of Assembly Tuesday, while the security men attached to the complex watched helplessly as members were thoroughly molested.

No sooner than the house convened for the day’s plenary session than thugs numbering over 100 arrived in three Hilux vans and rushed into the chamber beating members.

Armed policemen stationed at Kogi State Assembly Complex looked helpless as hundreds of thugs invaded Assembly chambers.

As journalists arrived the Assembly premises Tuesday morning, the environment looked tense with stern looking armed policemen covering the length and breadth of the premises.

The ADC to Governor Yahaya Bello was at the gate discussing with some policemen.

Kogi Police Commissioner, Wilson Inalegwu, was also on ground, told journalists he was there to ensure there is no breach of law.

A Sienna bus belonging to Hon. Abdullahi Bello Balogun of Ajaokuta was positioned to block the gate.

Security Adviser to Kogi State Governor, Navy Commander Jerry Omodara (rtd), Administrators of Okene, Adavi were also on ground.

The plenary started shortly afterwards but was disrupted by thugs who chased lawmakers and people at the gallery out of the chambers.

Speaker Imam Umar Ahmed and his security aides ran helter skelter to find their way out of the assembly that was surrounded by thugs.

Member representing Igalamela-Odolu apparently the target and his aides were attacked.

He was billed to resume after being cleared by the court from six months suspension.

The thugs moved unchecked by the armed policemen present. Some of the boys left in Kogi State Government House car marked KGGH 128 (an ash colour Toyota Camry muscle).

The thugs were also seen filming the beating as security personnel attached to the house watched helplessly while the commotion lasted.

Journalists watching proceedings from the gallery scampered for safety with some scaling the fence of the Assembly complex.

Meanwhile, the state Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello has condemned the assembly invasion, saying that his administration will not condone any act of thuggery.

He added that anyone caught would be made to face the full weight of law.

  • Senate dares INEC on Melaye’s recall

Senate dares INEC on Melaye’s recall

…Says exercise a waste of time

The Senate on Tuesday dared the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over the commission’s decision to go ahead with the recall of Senator Dino Melaye (Kogi West) as demanded by his constituents.

Describing the recall move as effort in futility, the Senate said the various stages passed so far in the exercise as facilitated by INEC were not in line with laid down constitutional procedures and guidelines.

The lawmakers declared that it amounts to a waste of time by all the parties involved.

This resolution followed a point of order raised against the move by Senator Melaye himself.

Melaye drew the attention of the Senate to what he described as “supersonic move” by INEC to conclude work on the recall petitions written against him by some of his constituents, who he alleged were sponsored by the State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello.

Melaye said, “The score of both valid and invalid votes in the election that brought me into the Senate in 2015 was 118,000 but my governor and his appointees in four days claimed they got signatures of over 188,000.

“They got INEC data base of registered voters and copied in one writing into a recall register and forged all the signatures. As I speak to you, over 120 dead certificates issued by the National Population Commission and these people’s relations and families have sworn to affidavits and these certificates have been deposited.

“The names of all these dead people appeared on the recall register submitted to INEC. 116 of my constituents have sworn to affidavits that their names and signatures appeared in the recall registers and that they were not the ones that signed it.

“86 of my constituents have sworn to an affidavit that they were approached and that the government wants to carry out a fertilizer empowerment programme and requested for their PVCs and thereby deceived them into putting their names in the recall register”.

Consequently the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu cited Sections 68, 69 and other relevant provisions  of the 1999 Constitution to fault the move. He wondered why INEC is not following the laid down procedure in carrying out the exercise.

Ekweremadu said, “I am wondering why we are dissipating energy on this matter and wasting precious legislative time on a matter we should not.

“What is happening in Kogi in respect of Senator Dino Melaye, as far as this constitution is concerned, is an exercise in futility. They are just wasting precious time because the constitution is clear on what should happen.

“It is possible that the Attorney- General of Kogi State has not advised them properly. If he had done that, I am sure they would have applied their time to more meaningful ventures in Kogi State.

Ekweremadu added that National Assembly, in 2010, amended the constitution in respect of Section 69, which deals with recall process of a federal lawmaker.

According to him, the Section clearly stated that the numbers of those who are seeking to recall Senator Melaye from the Senate are supposed to line up somewhere in Kogi State with him and his lawyers, with each person verifying their signature.

“When they are done with that they go back to Section 68, which states that the President of the Senate receives from the chairman of INEC the recall of the member. They would also present evidence satisfactory to the House or the Senate.

“So they need to come back here and convince each and every one of us that they have done the correct thing. Unless they do that, they cannot even give effect to it. So why are we wasting our time. Let us move on and allow them to waste their time”, Ekweremadu said.

In his contribution, the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, said, “As they say, 10 years is no joke in leadership, the Deputy Senate President has explained the processes. So let the process speak for itself.

“I really don’t know why a lot of efforts are being wasted that should have gone into more important things. Eventually, it must come back here for us to decide whether it is satisfactory or not”.
