Alimosho introduces monthly subsidised food market

    • By Faith Ajiboye and Aishat Ahmed

The Chairman of Alimosho Local Government, Johnson Akinpelu, has launched a monthly subsidised food market.

This, he said, was to ease food prices on residents.

At the launch, Akinpelu said the initiative became necessary following the widening gap between farmgate prices and what consumers pay in Lagos markets.

He noted that although food items arrive in the state at relatively lower prices, many traders continue to sell at inflated rates.

“We see that people bringing food from various states are selling at cheaper rates, but marketers are still selling at higher prices. With food, people gain the confidence to do other things,” he said.

The subsidised market, rolled out as part of the council’s first 100 days activities, offers staple items such as rice, beans, yam, garri, spaghetti, eggs and oil at 50 per cent of their regular market prices.

According to him, the intervention targets widows, the elderly, low-income earners and other vulnerable residents in line with the council’s WISE Agenda.

Akinpelu added that the programme will hold every month and remain a continuous welfare scheme.

“Our people are going through tough economic situations, but this arrangement is going to continue. Once they buy and finish their purchases, they can come back again to do more”, he said.

To ensure transparency and prevent hoarding, Akinpelu said residents are not allowed to purchase more than N20,000 worth of food items at each market day.

He added that buyers receive invoices before making payments and proceed through designated points for verification.

He outlined improvements recorded within his first 100 days, including the training and certification of staff across departments to enhance efficiency.

He added that key offices, particularly the finance department which he described as the “engine room”, had been upgraded.

“We have the ICT, Agriculture and Finance departments all seated. Finance handles money while ICT manages data collection so we can keep accurate records and plan future market days,” he said.

Head of Agriculture and Social Services, Riliwanat Imam, said the programme was designed to cushion the hardship caused by escalating food prices.

“It’s meant for the less privileged who cannot afford market prices. With N5,000 to N10,000, they can buy food that will sustain their families,” she said.

A resident, Evelyn Winners, commended the council for selling food items at reduced price.

“I bought rice, garri, bread and groundnut oil at 50 per cent off. I’m so happy. I pray our chairman continues the good work,” she said.

She urged the council to include livestock to expand the benefits of the initiative.

  • Outrage as flood sacks residents from Lagos community

Several residents of Jimoh Akinremi area of Akowonjo in Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State have been sacked from their homes after one week of downpour.

The flood, according to residents had paralysed commercial activities as well as human and vehicular movement in the area.

The anguish of the residents started after a channelization of collector drainage following ongoing construction work in the area.

Residents told The Nation that the diversion of drainage water to the area was causing serious flooding and untold hardship with negative effects on lives and property.

The submerged street had prevented residents and traders from accessing their homes and shops in the community.

The situation forced distraught residents to remove their shoes and wade through the dirty water to reach their homes.

A number of residents trapped in their homes were seen salvaging some of their submerged personal effects from the flood.

Distraught residents who spoke with The Nation urged the state government to rescue them from the situation.

It was learnt that several letters had been written to concerned authorities including the contractor handling the project, without any solution to the problem.

A resident, Adejumo Olatunde, told our correspondent that the area had always been flooded since the rebuilding of the road with interlocking blocks started several months ago.

He noted that several government officials had visited the community to ascertain the situation but nothing was done to solve the problem.

‘’We started experiencing this problem when the reconstruction of the road began several months ago. We have written many letter to the state and local authorities but nothing was done in spite of the visit by officials to this area.’’

‘’Lagos State government should save us from being wiped out by flood caused by improper channelization of water,’’ said another resident, Wale Ojomo, who claimed he could not access his home.

One of the landlords in the community, Elder Durotoye said: ’’ We have nowhere to go . The channelization is giving us a nightmare especially when it rains here. Several houses and properties have been ravaged by flood.

‘’The situation is becoming unbearable considering the fact that the rainy days are just around the corner. We therefore appeal to the state government to save us from the negative consequences of this man-made flooding.’’

  • Poor turnout in Alimosho

There is poor turnout of voters in Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State, which has the largest voting population in the Centre of Excellence.

At Unit 005, Ward 061 in Shasha/Akowonjo only 100 voters out of 1,198 registered voters had voted as at 1.45pm.

It was the same situation at Unit 60, Ward G 2 in Orelope, Egbeda, where 96 persons out of 1,024 registered voters had voted as at 1.42 pm.

The situation was not too different at Unit 58, Ward 4 where 70 persons voted out of 900 registered voters at the time The Nation visited at 1.55pm.

At Unit 025, Ward 4, Ijegun road,  Ikotun, only 125 persons out of 1169 voted by 2pm.

It was the same scenario at Unit 066,Ward 2, Egbeda. Only 100 out of 1,064 registered voters showed up at the unit to vote.

A cross section of party agents and observers attributed the poor turnout to apathy on the part of voters.

  • Residents groan as flood destroy properties in Alimosho

Residents of Aboru in Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State on Monday woke up to count loses caused by flood, following a heavy rain that lasted from Sunday night to early hours of Monday.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that as a result of the flood many residents could not sleep in the night.

NAN observed that residents stood in batches at the frontage of their houses and shops lamenting the havoc caused by the rain while some were seen carrying belongings affected by the rain outside.

Many fences were pulled down while the entire Aboru Road in Iyana-Ipaja was filled with mud and garbage moved to the area by the flood.

Many of the residents and shop owners who spoke with NAN linked the recurring flooding to the alleged abandoned bridge connecting Iyana-Ipaja to Aboru, saying the bridge was taking much water than it could.

According to them, whenever it rains, not only in the area but also in other places like Abule Egba, Abattior in Agege, the water being channeled to the bridge affect residents of the area.

An elderly landlord, Mr Solomon Egbodhoroma said that the people in the area had been suffering because of the abandoned bridge.

He alleged that what the government constructed was a culvert and not bridge.

Egbodhoroma said: “I could not sleep since 2 a.m. when the rain started because the water spilled over to the window level of my one storey building and pulled down my fence.

“Our challenge in Aboru road here is the canal that the government refuses to do. What is here is better described as a culvert not a bridge. Every year, we suffer a lot and lose property.

“The recurrent flood has sent away people in my ground floor as you can see. I have been restricted to the upstairs and every year, my house is always affected.

“The channelisation of over 35 drainages to this area is a problem we face, and the government has refused to do it even after the contract was said to have been awarded as far back as 2012.’’

The retire civil servant, who noted that he got to the area in 1979, said that home owners had made efforts to fix the problem.

“We have equally written to the state government and house of assembly without result.

“After series of letters, the government refused to answer us, we went there to protest and they promised to come but they did not. We are pleading with the government to come and do this bridge.

“Where can I go from here being close to 70 years? A lot of people have left after losing property. I have suffered enough,” he said.

Also, a Septuagenarian landlord, Harryi Iduwe urged the government to come to their aid by ensuring the construction of a standard bridge in the area that could withstand the volume of water channeled into it.

Iduwe, whose house was also inundated with water, said the canal had been bringing untold hardship annually to residents.

“Any time it rains, we are in trouble as water flows from the canal to all streets here. We call on the government to look at our afflictions,” he said.

A furniture maker, Mr Gift Wejem said that the flood did not only carry away a set of furniture and wood that were kept outside the shop, but also inundated materials, machines and power plant kept in the shop.

“The situation was not like this when I came in. The problem is flood and the increasing volume of water channeled here. The bridge we have here is not bridge.

“So, since much water is expected to pass into it, it gets filled up and water flows back to nearby houses,” Wejem told NAN.

Mr Suleiman Adedokun, another shop owner said: “This water is too much, it entered my shop and as you can see, I have been moving the water out since morning.

“Government should please come and do this canal, drains and road. It is long overdue. This road and drain must be raised to end our plights.”

NAN reports that as at about 11a.m., so many business owners, tenants and landlords are still busy evacuating water, refuse and mud the flood moved to their apartments.

  • Ajasa-Command road, another promise kept – Ambode

Ajasa-Command road, another promise kept – Ambode

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Friday commissioned the 2.481km Ajasa-Command Road, Ijasa in Alimosho Local Government, saying that the delivery of the road was another fulfillment of his promise to run a government of inclusion that would leave no community behind.

Governor Ambode, who performed the commissioning ceremony at an event that witnessed a large turnout of residents of the area, said he would spare nothing to make life more comfortable for the people of the State.

He said, “During my electioneering campaign, I promised to make life easier and more comfortable for our people through the implementation of people’s centered policies and provision of first class infrastructure.  I promised a government of inclusion; that leaves no community behind.

“In fulfillment of this, we commenced work on the construction of this road five months ago,” he said.

The Governor recalled that the rehabilitation became inevitable after he paid an unscheduled visit as a follow-up to the complaints received from the people of the Ajasa Command community on the deplorable condition of the road.

“On that day, I gave my word to immediately mobilise resources and men to deliver this project. Today, I am delighted that we have delivered a brand new dual carriage way; 2.481km long and 15 meters wide, complete with street lights, drainage and walk-way,” he said.

He said the road would serve as an alternative route to Abeokuta Expressway, assuring that work would continue earnestly to link Abesan Estate from Aboru before the end of the year, expressing optimism that it would go a long way to reduce traffic gridlock usually experienced along the axis.

“The construction of this road is a clear demonstration of what our administration stands for; to listen and respond to the needs of our people. I now urge you to protect public infrastructure in your community. This road has been built with the resources from our common wealth; the tax payers money; it must therefore be protected jealously, to serve the community and improve our quality of life and standard of living.

“As a government, we will continue to provide first class infrastructure in our communities and create an enabling environment for every Lagosian in fulfillment of our electioneering promises,” the Governor said

Governor Ambode also said that the commissioning of the road on May 27 was significant, as it coincided with the 49th Anniversary of the creation of Lagos State, adding that it was a pleasure to celebrate with the Alimosho Community, most especially Ajasa Command, Meiran and Aboru communities.

“It is also double and triple joy for us. We celebrate with all our children as we mark Children’s day today. May God Almighty continue to guide and guard our children to become great men and women in our lifetime.

“Triple joy, because, today, we are witnessing the rebirth of growth and development of the Alimosho economy with the commissioning of this road project. In exactly one year from today, your State, Lagos will be marking her golden anniversary of 50 years. We shall all witness that day together,” he said.

The Ajasa-Command Road is an important road linking the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway from popular Kola and Meiran Bus Stops to Ipaja and Ayobo communities. It is also a veritable alternative route to decongest the traffic gridlock on the expressway.

In his goodwill message, Senator representing Lagos West District, Olamilekan Solomon, said the development that has taken place in one year under Governor Ambode is unprecedented in the history of the State.

“What Governor Ambode has been doing in the State so far are clear indications that this is the government of the people indeed. For instance, aside the fact that there are so many other ongoing projects in Alimosho, Idimu-Ejigbo Road, Ikotun-Isolo Roads have been delivered by the Governor. The Abule Egba flyover is ongoing; world class transport interchange is coming up in Oshodi in another 13 months and a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the construction of 4th Mainland Bridge has been signed and the bridge would be delivered in three years, among others. This surely is indeed the government of the people,” the Senator said.

Also, a member of Lagos State House of Assembly representing Alimosho 1, Hon Bisi Yusuf said with his sterling performance in one year especially the numerous massive projects ongoing in his constituency, Governor Ambode had indeed made the leaders of All Progressives Congress (APC) in the State proud.

On his part, Oba Sulaiman Suberu, the Alajasa of Ajasa said in his almost 80 on earth, he had never seen a government that is committed to people’s welfare and comfort like that of Ambode’s administration.

He said Ajasa area used to be very underdeveloped, but within a short time of promising to transform the area, Governor Ambode has kept his promise, adding that the commissioning of the road marked the happiest moment of his life.
