    Kebbi assures residents of improved fuel supply

    The Kebbi Government, on Tuesday, assured residents of its commitment to resolve the lingering fuel scarcity in the state.

    The state deputy governor Alhaji Samaila Yombe, gave this assurance at an interactive session with stakeholders from the state Ministry of Commerce and Industry and the state monitoring committee on distribution.

    He said the State Government would not relent in its efforts to ensure that all the necessary measures be put in place to resolve the problem within the shortest possible period.

    “Considering the fact that the majority of the people in the state are farmers, who mostly depend on petrol to operate their farming activities, especially during the dry season”.

    According to him, the State Government will not disappoint the people of the state.

    Earlier, the Chairman of the Petroleum Distribution Committee, Alhaji Aliyu Ahmed, called on the State Government to intervene in the problem with a view to ending the scarcity.

    He said the committee was already working with the NNPC depot in Gusau, where 16 trucks had been reportedly allocated to the state.

    No clash between Corps members and Soldiers in Kano – Coordinator

    Alhaji Ladan Baba, the Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps ( NYSC ) in Kano has debunked media reports that there was a clash between soldiers and some corps members in the orientation camp at Karaye Local Government Area of the state.

    A statement by Aliyu Ahmed,the NYSC public relations officer and made available on Sunday in Kano denied the report.

    According to the Coordinator, there was also no any clash between the military, Paramilitary and the corps members as reported.

    “The attention of the Management of the NYSC has been drawn to news reports of skirmishes between a group of Corps members and the Camp Commandant, Capt. Anyaegbunan during the ongoing 2017 Batch ‘B’ Orientation Course at Karaye.

    “We wish to state for the records that the face-off started as a result of actions taken by a group of Corps members in solidarity with their colleagues who were being punished while loitering within the Camp Premises as social activity was going on.

    “The chanting of solidarity songs by the Corps members was an effort to get the erring Corps member released from the Camp Commandant which later ignited a rowdy session”, he said.

    The Coordinator added that the situation was immediately brought under control after he addressed the Corps members on the issue.

    “I promised to interface with the Camp Commandant to ensure that punishment and reward for Corps members are handled in line with the provision of the NYSC Bye law”.

    He reminded the Corps members of the need to adhere to the channel of communication in the Camp and assured them that NYSC Management would continue to implement policies and programmes that will enhance the welfare and security of Corps members in the Camp and during the service year.

    The Coordinator also drew the attention of all media organizations on the need to also adhere to their age-long tradition of balance and objectivity in news reporting.

    He further urged them to always verify their sources of news and to report objectively, saying normalcy has since returned to the Camp as all scheduled activities were on going without hindrance.

    The NYSC Coordinator also called on the public to always ignore such unbalanced reports so as to maintain the existing peace and unity among the corps members and the country at large.

    Three youths get 15 months for stealing carpet

    Three youths — Aliyu Ahmed, Aliyu Abdullahi, and Sani Bala — of between ages 21 and 23, who strayed into Gwarimpa area of Abuja and stole a carpet, are to spend five months each in prison.

    A Grade 1 Area Court sitting in Kado, Abuja, sentenced the trio of Ahmed, 22; Abdullahi, 21; and Bala 23 for joint act and theft.

    They pleaded guilty to the charges at the resumed hearing of the case on Monday.

    The judge, Alhaji Ahmed Ado, who handed down the verdict, however, gave them an option of N10, 000 fine each.

    Ado, who warned them to desist from committing crimes, said the punishment should serve as a deterrent to others.

    Before the judgement​ was delivered, the convicts pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy.

    Earlier, Police Prosecutor Judith Obatomi told the court that the accused were caught by some policemen on patrol in Gwarimpa area of  Abuja on Aug. 9.

    According to him, a brown carpet was recovered from them.

    The offences contravened Sections 79 and 288 of the Penal Code.

    Army confirms arrest of Boko Haram militant

    The Nigerian Army on Saturday confirmed the arrest of a suspected Boko Haram militant, Aliyu Ahmed, alias “Aliko.”

    The army spokesman, Brig.-Gen. Sani Usman, said in a statement that “Aliko” was arrested on Friday by troops of 33 Brigade following a tip off in Yuga village, Toro local government area of Bauchi State, where he has been hiding.

    The army also said it intercepted four child traffickers and 19 under aged children in Yobe.

    Usman said, “He was found to be in possession of one single barrel gun and one Dane gun.

    “During preliminary interrogation, he confessed that he actively participated in several Boko Haram terrorists’ attacks and also owned an AK-47 rifle which lost during one of the attacks they carried out in 2016.

    “His interrogation continued.”

    He said the four traffickers, who were arrested by of troops of Bravo Company, 120 Battalion at Katarko, were conveying the 19 children from Potiskum to Garin Tuwo, Bungai and Buni Yadi in Gujba local government area of Yobe and Galarabala in Biu local government area of Borno.

    “Both the suspected traffickers and their victims have been moved to the Brigade Headquarters for transfer to National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons,” the army spokesman said.
