The six state chairmen of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from the south-south zone have endorsed Sen. Ovie Omo-Agege for the position of Deputy Senate President in the night assembly.

They said their decision to support him was influenced by his loyalty to the country, President Muhammadu Buhari and his proven capacity to support the president’s programmes in the senate.

Their endorsement was contained in a letter addressed to Buhari, National Chairman of APC, Adams Oshiomhole and the National Leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

The letter was jointly signed by Jones Erue Chairman, Delta State; Hon. Jothan Lalabunafa, Chairman, Bayelsa State; Sir John Ochala, Chairman, Cross River State; Hon. Ini Okopido, Chairman, Akwa Ibom State, Hon. Ojukaye Amachree, Chairman Rivers State and Barr. Anslem Ojezua Chairman Edo State.

They hailed Buhari and the party for supporting the region to produce the next deputy senate president in the ninth assembly.

The letter reads: “That after a careful look at the political dynamics in our geo-political zone and the zoning formulae that your emergence has bestowed on us a people.

“We have taken cognizance of the Senators who will represent the South-South zone in the 9th senate, their antecedents, background and suitability for the position sought.

“With a sense of responsibility, we do hereby convey to you our agreement to endorse Senator (Barr.) Ovie Omo-Agege for the position of Deputy Senate President of the 9th Assembly.

“Distinguished Senator Ovie Omo-Agege had in recent past made sacrifices in the course of his very robust defense of Executive Bills and positions.

“The South-South region, which we represent is not unmindful of her role in the emerging political dynamics of our dear country and the need for our great party to consolidate her presence thereto.”

  • Why I want to be APC National Secretary, by Mustapha

One of the major contenders for the office of the National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Muhammad Bello Mustapha has said he was not in the race for the APC national Scribe to get appointment, but to help create a formidable secretariat for the party.

Mustapha also asked the national leaders of the party to fulfil the promise they made to him during the party’s national convention that saw him stepping down from the race for the former National Secretary, Mai Mala Buni.

The office of the National Secretary of the APC is current vacant following the election of the former occupant as the governor-elect of Yobe state.

Mustapha alleged that during the national convention of the party in June 2018, leaders of the party prevailed on him to step down from the race assuring him that he will be richly rewarded.

Mustapha told The Nation in Abuja on Thursday that he agreed to step down from the race for the National Secretary after the National Leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and some other leaders assured him the when Buni is elected governor, he will become the next National Secretary.

He insisted that he has made so much sacrifice for the party, dropping his ambition at every interval he is asked to do so, saying “in 2014, I contested for the position of National Secretary and was asked to step down and I did. When Babachir Lawal left as National Vice Chairman, North East, I wanted to contest and again I was asked to step down and I did.

“Again, in June, during the convention, five of us bought form to contest the National Secretary position. I was asked to step down and I refused. But out respected National Leader, Asiwaju Tinubu prevailed on me and assured me that I will be given the position when Buni is elected and I agreed. I was the last to step down from the race and that was after several states have voted at the convention.

“I am not in the race for the National Secretary position because I want appointment. I want to head the Secretariat of the party and bring my wealth of experience to bear. I am qualified lawyer who has worked as Company Secretary before. So I have the experience that is needed for that position.”

Reminded of the interest of other contenders especially from the Borno/Yobe axis with the likes of Kashim Imam and Arch. Waziri Bulama holding the upper hand, Mustapha said “the position is zoned to the North East and not to Borno or Yobe states.

“Of all the states in the North East, it is only my state, Taraba that has never had a representation in the National Working Committee. The highest position we have had is the position of Zonal Youth Leader. For the sake of equity, I think Taraba state should be allowed to produce the National Secretary.

“Borno and Yobe have always claimed everything coming to the North East and I believe this should not be the case. We are part of the one and should be given a sense of belonging. That is why people from Borno and Yobe state should not even be showing interest in the position. If you look at it, we, In Taraba dont even have a minister in this government.

He said expressed optimism that leaders of the party in the north east will do the needful and allow him become the National Secretary since he has gone round all to inform them of his ambition, but was emphatic that he would rather lose the position in a free and fair contest than to step down again for any other candidate.

“When the position of National Vice Chairman, North East became vacant, the called all of us and we agreed for a consensus candidate. That was how Comrade Salisu got the position. I believe there should be a consensus in my favour also. But if that is not possible, I would prefer that we go to the poll. I am confident that I will emerge winner at the poll to become the National Secretary.”

  • House Leadership: ‘APC won’t have their way’

A member of the House of Representatives, Anayo Nwonu has said that the All Progressives Congress, APC, will not have it’s way in it’s bid to impose a new  leadership on the National Assembly.

The lawmaker who represents Ezza South/Ishielu Constituency in the green chamber said the ravings of the National Chairman of the APC will amount to nothing in the long run.

He stated this in Abakaliki, the state capital after visiting teaching Alex Ekwueme Federal Teaching Hospital where he paid the hospital bills of some of his constituents to enable them be discharged on time to rejoin their families for the Easter celebration

The lawmaker, who was elected for a second term under the platform of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, said his party will have a say in who replaces, Senate President, Sen Bukola Saraki and Speaker  of the House, Yakubu Dogara.

The APC which has majority in both Chambers of the legislature have endorsed Sen Ahmed Lawan to succeed Saraki and Femi Gbajabiamilla to succeed Dogara.

But Nwonu said the lawmakers elected under the platform of the opposition PDP will not allow the APC impose any candidate on the National Assembly.

He said:“Right now, you cannot conclude what will happen in the national assembly until the day og inauguration. I want you to forget about party issues and propanganda by the All Progressives Congress(APC), and what the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) is saying”

“Lawmakers politics is quite different from what you are seeing. On 11th June  by the special grace of God when we will be inaugurated, you will see a different scenario playing out, you will see a different thing altogether playing.

“By then, the APC chairman will not be in that chamber, Mr. President will not be in that chamber. So, it  is the lawmakers that will decide who they give their leadership. So for now, I will not let out the cat out of the bag on the game we are playing . That day of inauguration, Nigerians will see the politics we are playing.

“The People’s Democratic Party( PDP) will definitely play a role in the emergence of the leadership of the national assembly. Whether they like it or not, whether Oshiomole is barking like a dog, PDP must play a role. But the role they will play, we do not know it until the inauguration day.

“I want to assure you today 20th April, 2019  that the All Progressives Congress(APC) will not have their way, I want to assure you that. I am part of the power brokers at the national assembly and I know what is happening there. I can say it anywhere because I know what is happening”.

“And as of now, no  matter how they do it, APC will not have their way totally. It is not that APC will not be the speaker or senate president, but to say they will determine is a lie”.
  • APC chieftain tasks party on intensive consultation with aggrieved members

A chieftain of ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) in Edo State, Stanley Osifo, has urged the party on vigorous consultation to pacify the aggrieved members of law makers elected under the platform of the in the both chambers before the inauguration of 9th National Assembly in June to prevent 2015 scenario from playing out.

Osifo stated this in Benin-City Saturday in a telephone conversation with The Nation.

He appealed to Nigerians to always strive to place competency above any other interest if they desire to make Nigeria a great country and subdue selfish interests which has been a hindrance to greatness in the country.

The party at a separate dinner with senators and house of representatives members elected on the platform of APC in Aso Villa adopted Senator Ahmed Lawan and Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila as Senate president and Speaker respectively.

But the decision of the party to back the house leader, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila earlier in the week for the 9th National Assembly speakership, has been met with mixed reactions by governors, law makers and APC state chairmen in the North-Central.

The Edo State born politician dissented on the concept of rubber stamp in legislative-executive relationship which some feelers opined that party’s choice will create.

He said the legislative arm of government is guided by law that enriches its role as watchdog role on the executive.

He opined that with president Buhari that many adjudged as a man of integrity as chief executive and commander in chief, the issue of rubber stamp cannot occur saying the president can check himself to ensure that things are done properly.

The business man turned politician cited the frosty relationship between the executive and the 8th National Assembly as the reason for the yearly delay in passing Nigerian budget into law which, he believed has slowed down Buhari administration to deliver on electoral promises in the last four years.

Osifo expressed optimism that having a National Assembly that has connection with executive in terms of administration will ensure that things are looked into holistically for the progress of governance.

He stressed that for president Buhari to throw his weight behind the party’s choices to become senate president and speaker, it means he knows and believes in their pedigrees.

According to him, “There should be consultation with the aggrieved parties, to ensure that the past mistake does not occur. We need someone that can look at things holistically and able to proffer right solution to ensure that we move forward as a nation.”

“The emergence of Senator Bukola Saraki and Hon. Yakubu Dogara as senate president and speaker respectively in 2015 was a gang up against the party’s plan. So this time around the party should ensure that whoever emerges as the senate president and the speaker should be people that will be willing to work with the executive to ensure that the executive delivers on the electoral promises to Nigerians,” he counseled.

  • Julius Bio sworn in as new Sierra Leone president

Opposition candidate and former military junta leader Julius Bio was sworn in as Sierra Leone’s new president late on Wednesday, just hours after the elections commission announced his victory in a tight run-off poll.

He now faces the difficult task of rebuilding the impoverished West African nation’s economy that was dragged down by the world’s deadliest Ebola epidemic and a global slump in commodity prices.

Representing the Sierra Leone People’s Party ( SLPP ), Bio won 51.81 per cent of votes cast in the March 31 poll, according to results announced by the National Electoral Commission ( NEC ) on Wednesday.

He defeated former foreign affairs minister and ruling All People’s Congress ( APC ) candidate Samura Kamara, who had held a slight lead based on partial results earlier in the day but in the end garnered 48.19 per cent.

Dressed in traditional white robes, Maada Bio was sworn in just before midnight at a hotel in the capital Freetown, raising in the air the Bible upon which he swore the oath of office to the cheers of supporters.

“This is the dawn of a new era. The people of this great nation have voted to take a new direction,” he said in a speech following the short ceremony in which he made an appeal for national unity.

“We have only one country, Sierra Leone, and we are all one people.”

Bio, who briefly ruled Sierra Leone as head of a military junta in 1996, replaces outgoing President Ernest Koroma, who could not seek re-election due to term limits.

The largely peaceful election process has come as a relief for the country of seven million people, who in the 1990s endured a brutal civil war fueled by the diamond trade and notorious for its drug-addled child soldiers and punitive amputations.

SLPP supporters packed into the NEC headquarters on Wednesday, and following the announcement of the election results party officials urged the Maada Bio’s backers to remain calm.

“Celebrate responsibly. Do not disturb your neighbour. Victory for all men, not victory for some.

“Everyone in, no one out,” the party’s campaign manager Ali Kabba said.

Opposition supporters, confident of victory, sang and danced in the streets of Freetown on Wednesday evening hours before Bio was officially declared the winner.

“I feel happy about the results. I am here because my president Julius Maada Bio has won the election in this country,” said Adolfus Kargbo, among a group of SLPP supporters chanting Maada Bio’s name.

  • Sokoto defunct CPC members cry marginalisation in state affairs

Sokoto defunct CPC members cry marginalisation in state affairs

MEMBERS of the Sokoto state chapter of the defunct  Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), Saturday regrouped to lament over alleged total marginalisation  from affairs of governance and appointments by the Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal led administration in the state.

They unanimously appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to intervene by requesting the presidential panel to mediate in the matter with a view to addressing the problems.

Similarly, they accused the current government in the state for metting gross injustice ranging from victimization as well as subjecting them to various criminal abuses.

Addressing a press conference in Sokoto, the Convener, Professor Muhammad Lawal Bashir said after their painstaking sacrifices in the electoral processes that saw to the victory of the ruling All Progressives Congress(APC) both in the state and at the centre, they were side lined.

Bashir maintained that after the electoral victory, the PDP decampees under the leadership of Governor Tambuwal formed the government  without any one of our members. They have extricated themselves from all the merger agreements.

” Out of the sixty nine elected offices, none has been given to us from the office of the Governor to councils chairmen.

” Also, out of eighty eight political appointments, only one is given to CPC even though, he was a former member of the PDP who decamped to CPC after loosing relevance in the party at that time”, he pointed out.”

The group however, applauded the move by the President for recognising the exigency to appoint a mediator to finetune and salvage the ruling APC from imminent disintegration and utumate collapse.

” We acknowledge and express our support and joy for a mediator in the person of our National party Leader Asiwaju Bola Ahmed  Tinubu to assist in salvaging our great party, the All Progressives Congress from imminent disintegration and ultimate collapse”, the convener said.

  • PDP accuses APC of plot to sabotage its convention

PDP accuses APC of plot to sabotage its convention

The leadership of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of plotting to sabotage its December 9 national convention.

Citing “intelligence reports”, the PDP said the ruling party has perfected plans to sponsor a parallel convention using some unscrupulous members of the PDP to hold a parallel convention.

Addressing newsmen in Abuja on Friday, the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, said the aim of the APC was to factionalise and destroy the opposition ahead of the 2019 elections.

Adeyeye appealed to PDP members across the federation to resist such temptation, saying the party was doing everything to address grievances among its aspirants to the various executive positions ahead of the December 9 convention.

“We are not completely oblivious of the plans by the APC to sabotage our convention. Apart from the internal fighting within the APC, one of the reasons why the party postponed its national convention till next year was to enable it closely monitor our convention with a view to destabilising our party ahead of the 2019 general elections.

Adeyeye said, “The National Caretaker Committee has uncovered plans by some unscrupulous members of our party to hold a parallel national convention on December 9, 2017.

“This is totally uncalled for and a complete act of sabotage. Those making such plans cannot be said to be honest members of our party, the PDP. They are not patriotic but just out to destroy our party.

“The planned parallel convention is one of those ideas of the APC to create divisions amongst members of our party. It will be most unfortunate for members of our party to allow themselves to be used against the party, especially in the light of our recent painful experience.

“These are all part of the agenda of the APC to create an atmosphere of fear and insecurity around PDP members before and after the national convention. It is also part of the overall strategy of the ruling party to turn Nigeria into a one party state.

“The National Caretaker Committee has been working very hard to carry all party members and supporters of the party along in all the preparations for the forthcoming national convention holding on December 9 – 10, 2017”.

According to him, the plot by the APC was to capitalise on disagreements among the chairmanship aspirants of the PDP, assuring that the leadership of the party would address the aspirants’ grievances in an open and transparent manner before the convention.

“We are putting our resources in place to address all the fears earlier reported by some national chairmanship aspirants. One of the steps being taken by the leadership is to make available and in good time, the comprehensive names of all the delegates for the national convention to all the aspirants before the convention.

“We therefore see no reason for any honest member of this great party to want to disrupt our programmes, except they are of course working for the ruling party, the APC”, Adeyeye added.

The party appealed to aggrieved aspirants and members to take advantage of available internal conflict resolution channels to ventilate their opinions, concerns and grievances.

It vowed to resist any moves by anyone to sabotage the convention, saying however that there was very little the party could do to dissuade members that may have decided to become paid agents of the APC.

The party spokesman cited the arrest and detention of some key PDP stakeholders on what he described as trump up charges of corruption, saying that the ruling APC had already targeted no fewer than 50 of its prominent members for arrest and incarceration.

Adeyeye said, “The APC propagandists said we were crying wolf. Now we are being vindicated by the continuing and unrelenting arrest, intimidation and harassment of our top leaders.

“In the last one week, the former Governor of Taraba State, Mr. Abubakar Danladi and the former Senate President and Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, two prominent members of our party, were arrested by the anti-graft agency, the EFCC. This is apart from the five that were earlier arrested within the month of November. We don’t know who will be next in the list”.

The PDP called on Nigerians and the international community to be vigilant and to ensure that the APC did not entrench full blown dictatorship in the country.

“The only reason why the APC is hell bent on killing the opposition in Nigeria is due to its nonperformance and inability to deliver on its campaign promises. They have failed Nigerians and they know too well that they can no longer convince Nigerians to vote for them again in 2019.

“We want to assure members of our party nationwide that, the leadership of the party led by Senator Ahmed Makarfi, will provide an enabling environment and a level playing field for all those contesting for one position or the other before and after the national convention.

“We pledged to ensure a transparent, free and fair election and by the grace of God we are going to conduct the most democratic election in the history of any political party in Nigeria”, the party spokesman said.
