  • We’ll we be guided by national interest, says Lawan

Senate President, Ahmad Lawan on Monday said senators will be guided by national rather than personal interest in discharging their responsibilities.

Lawan stated this when he played host to chairmen of state chapters of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Abuja.

He noted that the Senate will subsume any individual interest for “our collective interest.”

A statement by his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mohammed Isa, quoted Lawan as saying that the Senate would focus on issues that would enhance better security environment, better power supply and an economy that will provide job opportunities for youths.

“These are things that will continue to unite us. It is when we are able to tackle those issues in the collective interest of Nigeria particularly, that we are able to enjoy the privileges that we have,” the Senate President said.

The APC senators, he said, are committed to the success of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, adding, “we will ensure we work seamlessly with President Muhammed Buhari and the party.

“We have been elected to represent the Nigerian people. Mr. President was overwhelmingly elected. We will have no difficulty in working with Mr. President.

He called for a dispute resolution mechanism in the APC to amicably resolve any issue that might arise within the party.

“From my experience in 2019 elections or the process leading to the elections, we need to have a better dispute resolution mechanism,” Lawan said.

Lawan noted that the APC needed to have such dispute resolution mechanism because the party could not afford to have any of its chapter in disarray.

He said that APC should be disposed to ensuring that all chapters of the party are able to contribute to national development.

“So I will advocate for a dispute resolution mechanism that will ensure that our party is able to deal with issues as they emerge.

“Of course, naturally, we may have disagreement from time to time but what is important and crucial will be how we are able to tackle the disagreement and come back to agree and move forward,” Lawan said.

He expressed gratitude to the PDP Senators for their overwhelming support, and reiterated his commitment to lead a bipartisan legislature.

According to Lawan, “we are happy we have the support of our colleagues from the opposition parties. They have demonstrated their commitment to work with us.

“We too have also resolved to work with them in the interest of our country and for Mr. President and our party to succeed in taking us to the next level”.

He thanked the states chairmen of the APC for their role in the victory of the party in 2019 general election.

Chairman of the Forum, who is also the Borno State APC chairman, Alhaji Ali Bukar Dalori, advised the APC senators to ensure smooth working relationship with the executive.

  • Oyegun destroyed APC in Oyo, other states, says party chief

Prominent leader of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Oyo State and Chairman of National Lottery Commission, Alhaji Fatai Ibikunle, has recounted how former National Chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, allegedly caused the loss it suffered in Oyo and some other states.

He expressed consternation at the statement credited to the former national chairman challenging the competence of Adams Oshiomhole to be the ruling party’s national chairman.

The former chairman’s statement has raised lots of concerns among APC faithful across the country, leading to a vote of confidence passed by states’ chairmen on Oshiomhole last week.

Ibikunle, the party’s stalwart in Oyo State and a former Personal Assistant (PA) to the late Governor Lam Adesina, described the statement as unfortunate.

The APC chieftain said it was made by someone he accused of causing incalculable damage to the party.

The agency’s chairman said Odigie-Oyegun had no moral right to challenge the competence of Oshiomhole to lead the ruling party.

He said Odigie-Oyegun allegedly caused the loss of the party in Oyo State, adding that due to his poor leadership, the party witnessed more defeats in other states and turned the governors to monsters.

“The elderly man, Oyegun, lacks the moral right to challenge Oshiomhole because he caused the defeat and misfortunes of the party in many states. The party was grounded before Oshiomhole came. In many states, the APC was already destabilised and in a bad shape.

“For instance, Oyo State. We held a congress that was witnessed and observed by all, including the national officers. But Oyegun changed everything… Overnight, he made himself unavailable for us to talk to.

“How can an elderly man like that be doing injustice and still have the moral right to be challenging another person? He lacks the moral right to say someone is not fit to lead the party.

“An elderly man of his stature must look for the progress of the party first before and above personal satisfaction. He must take decision based on truth and justice.

“This governor does not obtain ward congress form for his own ward executive and that is the foundation of the party. We obtained form before the expiration date but the governor did not, till date. Oyegun decided to manoeuvre everything to the advantage of the ones who satisfied his fancy.

“The same thing he must have done in other states. And he is the same person that is now challenging Oshiomhole that he is not capable to be the chairman of the party. Let me tell you that Oshiomhole is more capable to lead the party than him because Oshiomhole will always call a spade a spade…”

“But Oyegun is skilful in using diplomacy to say, ‘Okay, be assured justice will be done, everything will be looked into.’ But overnight, after something must have happened, he would change white to black.

“How can an elderly person do like that? I am taking Oyo State as an example because I am an active participant; I am affected. That is the beginning of the failure of our party in Oyo State. He caused it because he worshipped governors and he believed they were the people that determined his life and he was once a governor. He turned the governors to be emperors and monsters.

“What we know is that the party is different from government, but Oyegun merged everything. So, Oyegun has no moral right to challenge anybody, not even challenge the capability of Oshiomhole. He should just go and sleep and retire.”

Alhaji Ibikunle while calling on the party men and women to rally support for the leadership of Oshiomhole to rebuild and take the party to enviable position, expressed the optimism that APC would regain power in Oyo state in 2023.

  • APC hails Appeal Court’s judgment on Oyetola

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has expressed delight with the majority judgment of the Court of Appeal, which confirmed the victory of Adegboyega Oyetola as the duly elected governor of the state of Osun.

In a statement by Osun APC Director of Strategy and Publicity, Barr. Kunle Oyatomi, the party said “this judgement has put the records straight much beyond the controversy over last November’s governorship election.

“There has been a lot of expectations and anxiety on both sides until this morning when the judgment was given in favour of the APC.

“As far as we are concerned we have no doubt about the fact that we are the majority party in the state of Osun and the facts on the ground tell the story eloquently.

“Few months after the erstwhile disputed governorship election, the National Assembly votes took place.

“APC won two of the three Senate seats; six of the nine Reps seats; and 23 of the 26 House of Assembly seats!!

“How then could we have lost the governorship election? We may not be able to explain what was behind Adeleke’s performance that he came so close in November.

“Although we won, Adeleke’s score sheet was inexplicably abnormal. In contrast to the election four months after, the opposition’s so-called victory would have been a farce.

“We believe it is time to move on and concentrate efforts on the transformation work that started in 2010 and which the people have mandated Gov. Gboyega Oyetola to continue and improve upon.

“That’s a job the new governor and the APC are determined to accomplish by the special grace of Allah.”

  • APC leadership tussle: Court dismisses Nnamani’s suit

An FCT High Court, Nyanya on Wednesday dismissed a suit filed by Onyemuche Nnamani challenging the election of Emmanuel Eneukwu as the National Vice Chairman, South East Zone of All progressive Congress (APC).

Delivering a judgment on the suit, Justice Peter Kekemeke held that intra-party disputes should be resolved by the political parties themselves and not the court.

According to him, ‘the issues of political nature is exclusively for party ‘s internal resolutions as guided by their constitution. ‘

” The issue of who occupies any position in the party, is a political matter guided by the rules and regulations of the party.

” It is a domestic issue and not justiceable, the court does not interfere in intra- party affairs as for who gets what position or not.

” It’s like a family in a great house and they can settle their disputes themselves, this suit is therefore accordingly dismissed.

He said however, in case he was wrong which he doubted he would recount the records of the originating motion by Nnamani and the preliminary objections by the defendants.

Kekemeke said Nnamani according to his motion paid and collected the form for the post of the APC national vice chairman of the South East Zone.

He said Nnamani contested in June 23, 2018 in Abuja, with Eneukwu and had a total vote of 632.

Eneukwu polled 2, 937 votes and was confirmed the winner.

He added that the plaintiff alleged that Eneukwu does not have a waiver since he occupied same position he wished to contest for as of the time of the election and therefore, not eligible to contest.

The judge further said that Nnamani’s motion stated that it was not in compliance with the party’s constitution.

Kekemeke said in response to the motion, both the evidence of APC and Eneukwu corroborated.

He said there were evidences showing that the 2nd defendant was given a waiver both at the national and local level to contest.

He added that the plaintiff according to the defendants did not exhaust the party’s internal disputes resolution mechanism and that the institution of the suit was premature.

He further added that APC said there is nothing in the constitution that disqualified the 2nd defendant from contesting for any post.

  • APC picks Wase as Deputy Speaker, says Jibrin

The All Progressives Congress (APC) may have adopted Idris Wase (Plateau) as the Deputy Speaker of the 9th House of Representatives, it emerged on Saturday.

The hint was dropped by Abdulmumin Jibrin (Kano), who is the Director General (DG) of the Femi Gbajabiamila campaign council.

Gbajabiamila had been adopted by the party at a presidential dinner last month.

Jibrin, on his twitter account on Saturday, said any member of the  APC caucus that fails to heed to party’s choice of Wase  ultimately risked being sanctioned.

The tweet reads: “MURUS!!! Mr Speaker and Mr Deputy Speaker 9th Assembly. If you are an APC member and against the two, you are on collision course with the party. 2015 is NOT 2019 in so many ways.”We are assuring our 360 colleagues, Femi and Wase will run an all-inclusive House. • APC elders reject Oni’s suspension from party

Some elders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ifaki Ekiti Ward, have rejected the recent suspension of former governor of the state, Mr Segun Oni, from the party by ward officers over alleged anti-party activities.

The leaders of the party from the two wards of Ifaki Ekiti, in Ido/Osi Local Government Area of Ekiti State, condemned the suspension, describing it as embarrassing and illegal.

They said that the process which led to the suspension violated the guidelines of the party, thereby calling on party members to disregard it.

The elders who took the new position on Saturday are: Michael Durodola, Tayo Okanlawon, Ebenezer Ogunlana and Sola Ilori.

The APC executives in Ifaki Ward II, had on May 1, slammed Oni with indefinite suspension from the party.

Oni had shortly after the July 14, 2018 governorship election, won by Gov. Kayode Fayemi, gone to court to challenge Fayemi’s eligibility to participate in the May 12, 2018 APC primary.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Gov. Fayemi won the case, which dragged up to the Supreme Court.

The letter conveying Oni’s suspension was signed by the chairman and secretary of Ifaki ward II, Shina Akinloye and Ogunyemi Taiwo and 24 other executive members in the ward.

However, Durodola, Okanlawon, Ogunlana and Ilori dissociated themselves from the suspension, saying it was an act of disrespect for Oni, who was also immediate past Deputy National Chairman (South) of the party.

“The ward executives’ decision to suspend Segun Oni did not receive the blessing of generality of Ifaki wards’ APC Leaders

“The concocted allegations were unfounded. Names of those  said to have raised allegations of anti-party against Oni were not mentioned, neither was he invited.

“The faceless committee they said they set up did not properly invite the former governor

” Also, the suspension letter written to the former governor has no signatories and this renders it useless.

” With the above, we the entire elders of the APC in the two wards in Ifaki, reject this suspension and we urge the party members and the public to discountenance it”, they said.

NAN also reports that Oni’s suspension from the party has also enjoyed the backing of the party’s executives in his Ido /Osi Local Government A
