  • Buhari has performed well in South-East, says Oshiomhole

Adams Oshiomhole, the National Chairman of the All Progressive Congress (APC), said on Friday that President Muhammadu Buhari had done substantially well for the South-East to deserve the people’s massive support in the February polls.

Oshiomhole said this at a rally in Umuahia to formally handover the party’s flag to the governorship candidate of the party in Abia, Chief Uche Ogah, as well as the state and National Assembly candidates.

He said that Buhari’s developmental strides in the zone in less than four years of his administration was enough to prove his critics wrong.

He listed the reconstruction of Enugu-Onitsha and Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressways, the construction of the Second Niger Bridge and completion of Late Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe’s mausoleum in Onitsha, as some of the president’s achievements in the area.

The party’s national chairman therefore urged the people of the zone to vote massively for Buhari’s re-election.

He admonished them not to repeat the mistake they made in 2015, when they allegedly voted against APC.

He further charged them to vote for Ogah and other APC candidates in the polls to ensure the rapid transformation of the state.

He described Ogah as a product of self-effort, industry, creativity and enterprise.

He said, “Ogah is self-made. He is not coming into government to steal your money.

“I’m happy that in Abia we had a direct primary that produced him. It was transparent. I’m proud of him.”

Also, former Gov. Orji Kalu, who is the Abia North Senatorial candidate of APC, said that Abia would give Buhari 70 per cent vote in the Feb. 16 election.

He berated the Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu led-administration for allegedly failing to utilise the state’s resources to transform the state.

Orji decried the poor state of infrastructure in the state, saying that Abia had not witnessed any meaningful development since he left office in 2007.

He expressed the hope that Ogah as a businessman would replicate his success story in his private business in governance, if elected.

In his speech, Ogah, an oil merchant, promised to make the people of Abia happy when elected.

“Abia rejoice! Your light has come and the glory of God has risen upon you,” he said, amidst loud ovations from his teeming supporters at the Umuahia Township Stadium, venue of the rally.

Ealier, Chief Donatus Nwamkpa, the state Chairman of the party, said that APC painstakingly chose credible candidates for all the elective offices in the state.

Nwamkpa assured the people that an APC government would put an end to the sufferings of the people and salvage the state from many years of economic underdevelopment. (NAN)

Governor Masari however warned that there must not be formation of unions within the APC, urging aspirants who contested and lost to desist from forming Union of aspirants that lost in the APC party primaries.

He reminded party members that the rules and regulations of APC do not permit formation of unions and associations within the party.

Earlier, while declaring the meeting open, the state chairman of APC, Alhaji Shitu S. Shitu told members that the meeting was convened to sooth nerves of the aspirants that lost during the just concluded party primaries held throughout the state.

  • Aisha Buhari blames Oshiomhole for ‘impunity, unfairness’

THE President’s wife, Aisha Buhari, has blamed the All Progressive Congress (APC) National Chairman Adams Oshiomhole over what she described as impunity and unfairness in the conduct of the party’s primary elections.

She noted that the party appeared to have granted automatic tickets to some political office aspirants while denying others the opportunity to contest after paying huge amounts of money to purchase nomination forms.

Mrs. Buhari regretted that despite coming from labour background, Oshiomhole left the side of the people and presided over the impunity.

According to series of post on Twitter handle, @aishabuhari, she also dissociated herself from the exercise.

She urged Nigerians to resist the impunity.

She tweeted: “It is disheartening to note that some aspirants used their hard earned money to purchase nomination forms, got screened, cleared and campaigned vigorously yet found their names omitted on election day, these forms were bought at exorbitant prices.

“Many others contested and yet had their result delayed. Fully knowing that automatic tickets have been given to other people.

“All Progressives Congress being a party, whose cardinal principle is change and headed by a comrade/ activist whose main concern is for the common man, yet, such impunity could take place under its watch.

“It is important for the populace to rise against impunity and for voters to demand from aspirants to be committed to the provision of basic amenities such as: Potable drinking water, basic health care (Primary Health Care centres).

“Given this development, one will not hesitate than dissociate from such unfairness, be neutral and speak for the voiceless.”

  • Oyo APC congratulates Oyetola

The Oyo state chapter of the ruling All Progressive Congress has congratulated the Osun state governor elect, Gboyega Oyetola on his success at the just concluded governorship election.

In a release signed by the Director of Media, Research and Strategies and Publicity Secretary, Dr AbdulAzeez Olatunde, the party saluted the doggedness of the good people of the state in renewing their mandate and reposing their trust with the progressives.

Describing the victory as “phyrric”, the party said the new mandate will prevent “stagnation of trajectory of development agenda put in place by the current Governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola.”

The statement reads in parts, “It is our believe that the Governor-elect, Gboyega Isiaka Oyetola on being sworn in, will instantly hit the ground running by not letting the good people of Osun State down, who weather the storm to cast their votes for our party despite daunting challenges of the agents of darkness and retrogression.

“The trajectory of His Excellency, Comrade Adams Aliyu Oshiomole’s led National Executive of APC Signposts nothing but good fortune in the approaching 2019 general elections for APC in Nigeria.”

  • 2019: ‘Buhari is our strongest selling point’

The National Secretary of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) and gubernatorial aspirant in Yobe State Alhaji Mai Mala Buni has said that the All Progresssive Congress (APC) remains the party to beat with President Mohammadu Buhari as its strongest selling point.

Alhaji Mai Mala Buni also noted that the APC, unlike the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) is not used to rigging election results but has relied on the sterling leadership and the unquestionable integrity  of President Mohammadu Buhari that has made the party garner its national assistance.

He disclosed that the defection of  some members from the party does not in any way threaten the chances of the party in the forthcoming election, adding that, “the APC still had a very good outing in Bauchi and Kogi even after the defection”.

His words: “Our major  and strongest selling point is President Mohammadu Buhari for the fact that he has demonstrated to Nigerians that he is leader and he has provided that leadership by fulfilling all the campaign promises made to the people during the 2014/2015 electioneering  campaign.

“The transformation that is ongoing in all sectors tells you why APC is the only party to beat. A Political party is an institution and you cannot extricate those periodic hick-ups but that does not mean that we have serious crisis or our chances are threatened or that we are really worried.

“Don’t forget, even after the defections, we had bye elections in Bauchi and Kogi and  we won them all. This is a clear testimony that the people of Nigeria are speaking through the ballot and not on mere propaganda.

“The APC is not known for arm-twisting or interfering into election process unlike the PDP that was use to rigging themselves into power. If APC had been known for rigging elections then  we wouldn’t have lost Bayelsa and Anambra. This implies that the APC allows democracy to flourish.

“The successes recorded during this administration are unprecedented. You are aware that election is the only barometer to measure the acceptability of an administration, or a political party,  or an individual.

“Take Kogi for instance, it used to be under PDP but we won. The same with Ondo, Ekiti . This  tells you that the people of Nigeria have accepted APC as a party that has come to stay under the able leadership of President Mohammadu Buhari who is tirelessly  sacrificing himself for the betterment of this country especially in the area of insecurity and infrastructure and war against corruption.

“There are unprecedented discoveries and trials of  corruption cases that are ongoing. These are all clear indicators of the good leadership of our president which is our selling point. Any day, any time, we have no problem as a party. We will consolidate our gains by still committing ourselves to the betterment of the country irrespective of our states, regions, tribes or religion,” Mai Mala said.

Commenting on the controversy of budget of INEC at the National Assembly, Mai Mala said the budget is a national duty, stressing that, “I don’t think any member of the National Assembly will abdicate the reason he was elected above selfish interest”.

“We have asked the national assembly to reconvene. Particularly we have spoken to our APC legislators to reconvene and pass the budget. If I am not mistaken, we have seen the joint committee of the National Assembly interacting with INEC so I am sure they will reconvene. It is a national duty. I don’t think any member of the National Assembly will abdicate his duty that he was elected by the people to do. I don’t think any member will refuse that because the national interest supersede any other interest and consideration of this budget is a national issue  and a call to duty, so I believe they will resume soon to put that matter to rest”  he said.

  • APC stakeholders endorse Olatunbosun for House of Rep.

Following the resolve of the Oyo state chapter of the All Progressive Congress  (APC) to adopt the indirect primary to select legislative flag bearers in constituencies that failed to agree on a consensus candidate, the leaders and elders of the party in the Atisbo/Saki-East/Saki-West Federal Constituency have endorsed Mr Olajide Olatubosun, a serving member of the House of Representatives, representing the constituency to run for a second term on the platform of the party.

The party at the constituency level said they decided to endorse the lawmaker to put to rest the debate of who would represent the constituency at the 2019 general election and also discourage other aspirants from wasting money on purchasing nomination forms.

According to the elders, the resolve was reached after due consultation with relevant stakeholders and party members within and outside the federal constituency.

The stakeholders made the declaration in separate meetings held recently in each of the three Local Government Areas of the constituency during a courtesy visit paid them by the federal lawmaker.

The Atisbo LG meeting held at the Ago-Are residence of Chief Samuel Adekola, Oke-Ogun APC leader. Other party stalwarts including Mr Lateef Ajemeje, Mr Yisau Adebayo and the Atisbo LG APC Chairman, Hon. Ojebisi Moses, wards party chairmen youth leaders, women leaders among others were present at the meeting.

The situation was not different in Saki East LG where party leaders and stalwarts in Agbonle, Ogbooro, Oje-Owode, Ago-Amodu and Sepeteri received Olatubosun with enthusiasm and endorsed him unanimously for the second term.

Party leaders present at the meeting included Pa A.O Ayankunle, Pa Salau Maruf, Chairman Saki-East LG, Prince Goke Adeleke, Chairman, Ifeloju LCDA, Saki East APC Chairman, Badmus Jimoh, Mr Jimoh Rewire, Mrs Riskat Eleyele, Prince Oyediran Yinusa among others.

In Saki-West LG, the council executive committee and ward chairmen led by the APC Chairman Alh. Azeez Ayinla and numerous stakeholders including the Chairman of Asabari LCDA, Mr Kareem Adegoke unanimously endorsed Hon. Olatubosun for a second term in office.

Earlier, during a visits to the party elders and leaders in Saki-West LG including Mr. Yekini Arikose, Alh. Raimi Ojongbodu and Chief Mathew Adeyemo, Olatunbosun was commended for good representation and for bringing the “dividends of democracy to the constituents”

While lauding the federal lawmaker for being an ‘unequalled and selfless representative of the people’, the party leaders pointed out that no one in the history of political office holders from the constituency has ever taken the fulfilment of electoral promises and improvement of the electorate’s welfare as sacred priority like him.

They said that aside the legislative functions being performed “wholeheartedly”, the federal legislator “has assisted his constituency in the area of provision of potable water, construction of school buildings, rehabilitation of  roads, awarding of scholarships, securing of jobs for some unemployed graduates and other unemployed persons, empowerment programme for farmers and other constituents.”

The party elders said they throw their weight behind Olatubosun to run for the second term as a federal lawmaker in the interest of the constituency, vowing to work for his victory in the forthcoming general elections.

Responding, Olatubosun said his gesture was in fulfilment of his campaign promises to alleviate poverty among his people through skill acquisition, job creation and regular donation of cash and materials.

Explaining that he considered his election into the National Assembly as a call to service, the lawmaker promised to continue to work for the well-being and welfare of the constituents.

He maintained that although he won the election on APC’s platform, he was meant to serve everybody in his constituency.

He, therefore, solicited the co-operation and unflinching support of the constituents in his efforts to chart a new course for the area and give a new lease of life through the alleviation of people’s suffering and improvement of their standard of living.

  • Field candidates with electoral value, aspirant tells Oshiomhole

An aspirant for the House of Representatives in Edo, Mr. Dennis Idahosa, has appealed to the leadership of the All Progressive Congress to field candidates with electoral value in the state.

Mr. Idahosa said the APC would win land slide if quality and popular candidates are given the party’s ticket.

Idahosa stated that people would vote for personality instead of political party in next year’s general election.

He however assured that the APC would win in Ovia Federal Constituency seat because of what he termed “Abysmal” failure of the present occupant of the seat.

According to him, “It is not just about picking the ticket; it is winning the elections proper. The right candidate is the one who is at home with the people.

“I am not unaware that the party has a role to play, but principally, a sellable candidate will make it easier for the party in securing electoral victory.

“The 2019 poll is going to be one full of surprises, our party needs to be prepared, more importantly, more united if we are to have a successful outing.”

“The present occupant of the seat who is from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), have done nothing but to distant herself from the reality on ground in the Federal Constituency.

“Without being a lawmaker or holding any political position, I have been able contribute meaningfully to the development of the people.

“My aim is to make much difference in the lives of the people across the 23 wards that make up the Ovia federal constituency.

“Victory is already ours because we are more united than we were in the 2015 elections,” he stated

  • Kaduna group rejects indirect primaries

All may not have been heard of the decision to adopt indirect primaries for selecting candidates by the All Progressive Congress (APC) Kaduna State chapter, as some stakeholders said they object to the decision.

Leader of a group called ‘Aspirants Forum’, Jalal Falal, who is also a governorship aspirant under the platform of the APC,  stated this while addressing newsmen on Friday, in Kaduna

According to him, the indirect primary system, by its very nature is prone to the manipulative influence of the few and the corruptive practice of vote buying.

He  said their rejection was a  collective decision in favour of the adoption of Direct Primaries as the most ideal mode of nominating candidates for the 2019 general elections in the state.

“We adopted this position after a very careful analysis of the dire geopolitical situation of Kaduna State in particular, and that of Nigeria in general.

“The role of the APC, as the ruling party is, to say the least, very crucial in moving forward the political-economy of our great country.

“It is an open secret that the APC in Kaduna state has been under the total control of the Governor and his anointed godsons and daughters,” he said.

He alleged that the bulk of the members of the party, including critical stakeholders who gave their all to enthrone APC in the state, have been marginalized and excluded from the mainstream affairs of the party.

“Perceived enemies of the governor are hounded and persecuted to no end. Jobs are lost, homes and businesses are demolished with careless abandon and extreme premeditated malice,” he said.

According to him, the group holds the view that the APC must walk the talk, adding that the party came to power on the mantra of fighting corruption and the enthronement of the ideals of participatory democracy.

“This process in itself begins with recruiting for elections the most capable, popular and trusted candidates, through processes that are credible and widely accepted by members of the party,”he said.

Falal urged the state governor and the party to be on the same page with the Aspirants Forum in having the moral courage to do what is right by taking the path of honor.

  • Oni vs Fayemi: Court sets hearing for Sept. 25

    Okays ex-gov’s amended processes

A Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed September 25 this year for hearing in the suit challenging the eligibility of Ekiti State Governor-elect, Kayode Fayemi for the last governorship election in the state.

Justice Nnamdi Dimgba chose the date on Wednesday after granting an application by the plaintiff, Segun Oni, for an amendment to the originating processes.

Earlier, Oni’s lawyer, Anthony Adeniyi told the court that his client has complied with the order for substituted service on the defendants.

Fayemi’s lawyer, Rafiu Balogun said his client was just served with the court processes and needed time to respond.

He agreed to file his client’s response before the next date.

Oni, in the suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/663/2018 claimed that Fayemi was not qualified to participate in the APC’s primary election held on May 12 this year on the grounds that he allegedly failed to resign his appointment as Minister Mines and Steel Development as required by law.

According to him, Fayemi won the APC’s primary election on May 12 this year while he was still the Minister of Mines and Steel Development, a position he didn’t officially resign from until May 30.

He queried Fayemi’s eligibility for the election on the strength of his (Fayemi) purported indictment by the Justice Oyewole Judicial Panel of Enquiry, set up by the state government to probe Fayemi’s first tenure in office.

Oni, who came second in the primary election by scoring 481 votes behind Fayemi’s 941, wants the court to declare him the valid flag bearer of the APC in the election held on July 14 this year, which Fayemi won.

Oni wants the court to determine “whether by virtue of All Progressives’ Congress constitution and particularly Articles 2 and 5 of All Progressives’ Congress 2014 Guidelines for the nomination of candidates for public office as applicable to the APC Governorship primaries conducted on the 12th May, 2018, the 1st defendant, being a serving member of the Federal Executive and Federal Minister of Solid Minerals, Mines and Steel Development, having not resigned his appointment as a member of Federal Executive and Minister of Solid Mineral, Mines and Steel Development, at all or at least 30 days to the said primaries election of 12th May, 2018, was qualified to contest and participate in the said All Progressive Congress Governorship primaries of 12th May, 2018 as an aspirant in that election.”
