“APC leaders did not shun meeting in Ondo”

Professor Ajayi Boroffice (OON), Senator representing Ondo North, Ondo State, has described as fallacious, speculations that some leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) purportedly shun a meeting he initiated. The Senator said this on Monday while responding to speculations in some sectors of the media, describing same as ‘untrue, fallacious, lame and logically-deficient’. According to the Senator on his social media handle, “I initiated the meeting to interface and converse with party leaders on issues concerning APC family in Ondo State. “The meeting was well-attended by members of the State Executive Committee led by the State deputy chairman and prominent party leaders. “Also in attendance were the General Secretary and his assistant, the three Senatorial Chairmen, Woman Leader and other officials. “As a matter of fact, I was ushered into the party secretariat with fanfare in an atmosphere of celebration.” Prof Boroffice further noted that the Party Chairman was ably represented by his deputy “as he had briefed me before the meeting about an official assignment in Abuja.” He therefore stressed that the insinuation of an imaginary set back to his governorship ambition is laughable. The posts read further: “I share a cordial relationship with party leaders; bound by the collective quest to enthrone an APC government in Ondo State. “Assuredly, I enjoy reassuring support and loyalty from APC leaders, local government executive committee members, wards executive committee members and other party members alike across the 18 local government areas of Ondo State as evident by the huge success recorded during the recently completed state-wide tour across all LGAs in the State.”

  • Classic buses for classic commuters

    Classic buses for classic commuters

LAGOS State Government has taken a major step towards easing commuters’ pains. Last Thursday; it launched 434 air-conditioned buses and inaugurated the expanded Mile 12-Ikorodu Road.

Governor Akinwumi Ambode of Lagos State, Governor of the State of Osun, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola and All Progressives Congress (APC) National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu performed the ceremony.

The buses, tagged BRT Classic or BRT Upgrade, according to the Commissioner for Transportation, Dr Dayo Mobereola, are not owned by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), or the government, but provided by a private firm on a Public-Private Partnership (PPP). The government provided the infrastructure while the private operators brought in the vehicles to run according to LAMATA’s guidelines.

This, he said, is the hallmark of the new thinking and commitment of the government to providing safe, reliable, comfortable and affordable motorised options for discerning Lagosians who love comfort.

The option, according to him, became imperative due to the gridlock over the last decade. He said not only would the government improve its presence in the sector, it would also ensure the reduction of vehicles on the roads, which would in no small measure ensure cleaner air and environmental preservation, because of reduced emission of carbon-monoxide and other green house gasses into the atmosphere.

Mobereola said the new path was conceptualised in 2008, when the government began the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Scheme. He, however, admitted that “along the line we got derailed and lost that essential part of the scheme that would have attracted it to the business class and professional groups. While we concentrated attention on providing service to the masses, artisans and traders who had no opportunity and may not be able to get their own cars, we neglected to serve a critical segment who might have their cars, or have the means to buy, but may have decided against it if government had provided an alternative that is comfortable, reliable and efficient”.

He said the result was the huge deluge of private vehicles, hundreds of which are added daily by those who have the capacity to acquire private vehicles. Mobereola said the government was determined to make motorised transportation the hub of mass transit in the state, while the waterways and the light rail would be introduced to add to public transportation alternatives for residents of the state.

The BRT, which was introduced on March 17, 2008, on the Ikorodu-CMS route, Mobereola said, has to date carried no fewer than 350 million passengers, and these ones on the daily basis, will carry almost 450,000 passengers.

According to the commissioner, the new thinking is that a city with 22 million people, 60 percent of who must move from one point to the other needs efficient, reliable, accessible and safe transportation system.

Assuring Lagosians of government’s commitment, he said the Ambode administration will in the coming months flood the state with modern and comfortable BRTs adding: “this is just an example of what we planned for Lagos State”.

Transportation experts agreed no less with Mobereola, they argued that if traffic gridlocks could be felt in developed economies of the world with advanced and fully integrated modes of transportation, Lagos with wholesale reliance on the oldest mode of transportation should be expected to worsen in the next decade if government refuses to deepen its involvement and provide leadership in the sector.

Speaking on the road, the commissioner praised the people for their understanding and forbearance all through the planning and execution of the newly expanded road that now has the BRT road at the median, adding that 10 stakeholders’ fora in all were held, all to ensure the buys-in of residents.

“Managing the people while construction was going on simultaneously was a great challenge. We learnt from the mistakes of the past – mostly operational.

“We had 10 stakeholders’ fora, three before the construction work started and seven during the project. We were engaging the people at every stage and they were guiding us. It was close project that involved the community because we needed their buy-in for us to succeed.

He said the project will improve the traffic situation along that corridor. As more people enter the BRT buses, the road will be freer; we are also doing the engineering on the road, especially at the junctions to increase the capacity of the road and make the way big enough to accommodate more traffic.

He said the N30 billion project which was financed by the French Development Agency (AFD), the World Bank and the state government, would enhance the mobility of the people and reduce travel time between CMS and Ikorodu by 60 percent, reducing a journey which presently takes an average of two and half hours to 45 minutes. He said the BRT will give priority to public transport, which is a mass carrier for a lot of people.

Majority Leader of the Lagos State House of Assembly representing Ikorodu Constituency 1, Hon. Sanai Agunbiade said the project will add value to the area. He, therefore, challenged the people to maintain the project to encourage the government.

The Ayangburen of Ikorodu, Oba Kabir Sotobi, praised the government for the success of the project and called for the execution of the Ipakodo jetty, which  he said would further boost the transportation initiative of the government.

Representative of Mr Yemi Adeola, the Managing Director of Sterling Bank Plc, (the financier of the buses), Mr Lanre Adesanya thanked the state government for giving the bank the opportunity to partner in making life better for the people of the state. He said the project would benefit no fewer than 4000 families directly and provide jobs for thousands more who would work as ticketers, vendors, mechanics, even as he said the bank has reduced the prevalence of cash in the system.

    APC Diaspora honours MKO, others

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Scandinavia has honoured late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Abiola popularly known as MKO with the Posthumous Award of Democracy Champion while Hon. Adedapo Lam –Adeshina was honored with an Outstanding Leadership Award.

The Awards of Outstanding Leadership was presented to Hon. Adedapo Lam-Adeshina by the National Women Leader, APC Scandinavia, Yeye Oge Mary Nike Brakner.

Hon. Lam-Adeshina in his speech of acceptance enthusiastically thanked APC Scandinavia members and promised to continue to live by the title of the award.

Hon. Adedapo Lam-Adeshina is one of the youngest and brilliant Members of Federal House of Representative, representing Oyo South-East/North-East Federal constituency.

He was a recipient because of his stallion performances in different capacities and for serving as a beacon of light and inspiration for both old  and younger generation  who already lost hope in good governance and youth inclusion in scheme of Nigeria democracy. Hon. Lam-Adeshina was one of the best minds that the Swedish Government selected for the 2015 VP SwedenAbroad, first of its kind in Sweden Nigeria foreign relations.

Late Chief MKO Posthumous Award of Democracy Champion was  presented by the Chairman/ National Coordinator of APC Scandinavia,  Mr. Ayoola Lawal and the award was received on behalf of MKO by Hon. Rinsola Abiola, daughter of  late MKO and the youngest board member of trustees of APC.

Rinsola displayed affection for the award when she thanked the APC Scandinavia for the recognition.

In her statement she said the family often discussed and wonder why MKO is yet to be properly

Acknowledged his honor in Nigeria history by the Nigerian government. However, she believes that does that refused to acknowledged her father his appropriate place in Nigerian history will never and can never be greater than MKO even in death. She said she will deliver the award to the family.

Mr. Ayoola said that it was a great honor and privilege to be chosen to present the first of its international kind of posthumous award to the late father of contemporary democracy in Nigeria and his own hero, MKO. He said the award was long overdue because  MKO lived and died for  the believe in an egalitarian society for  Nigerians and anyone living in Scandinavia can really relate to what MKO courageously stood and died for.

The distortion of Nigeria’s democratic aspiration started with the annulment of the June 12 1993 free and fair elections and since the sad events of 1993, election riggers had perfected the art.

He said that Abiola, the presumed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election deserve  a proper national and international honor in which APC Scandinavia is the pacesetter in this regards.

The South West region already adopted June 12 as a red day (holiday) but June 12 was a national  issue.

He deserved a Posthumous nation´s highest honor, Grand Commander of the Federal  Republic (GCFR), having won the acclaimed free and fair 1993 presidential elections and laid down his life for the contemporary  democracy in Nigeria.

We are very hopeful that our APC led administration will  build a groundswell of national consensus to do the needful in this respect and put an end to the June 12 saga.

Now is the time to start to celebrate our real and authentic heroes and heroines rather than glamourizing political criminals and pre acted movies stars.

  • Stop scoring cheap political points with my name – Onu

Stop scoring cheap political points with my name – Onu

Former governor of Abia state and one of the national leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu asked those using his name to score cheap political points to desist from doing so, saying Nigerians must continue to stand firm, resolute and work together in the overall interest of the country.

Onu who was reacting to reports in the social media quoting him as saying that Buhari had informed him of his intended actions and why he will not be chosen as the SGF prior to the announcement of the appointment of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and the Chief of Staff.

He was also quoted as saying that his house became a Mecca as people seeking favours besieged his house in anticipation of being appointed as the SGF, with the same people deserting his house when he was not given the appointment.

A statement signed by his former Chief of Staff, Sunny Onyeukwu and made available to The Nation in Abuja reads; “The attention of His Excellency, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, has been drawn to a seeming orchestrated campaign apparently originating from the social media to smear his hard earned reputation.

“On Saturday, August 28, this year, a Facebook broadcast titled “SGF; OGBONNAYA ONU AND VAINGLORIOUS NIGERIANS” allegedly at the instance of one Ajayi Temitope was circulated in the social media without his knowledge and consent.

“In it, Dr. Onu was falsely and perhaps maliciously credited as having told an unnamed friend of Mr. Ajayi Temitope in a 35minute telephone conversation that prior to the announcement of appointments into the offices of Chief of Staff to the President, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, among other positions, he (Dr.) Onu was informed by Mr. President of his intended action and why he would not be chosen for appointment as SGF.

“The Facebook broadcast further falsely credited Dr. Onu with expressing regrets about how his Abuja residence had become “a mecca of sorts” for those seeking patronage from him in anticipation of his appointment as SGF and lamented that soon after the announcement was made without his being appointed to serve in the exalted capacity, his residence became deserted.

“For the avoidance of doubt, it has become important to state in strong terms that Dr. Onu never expressed the views credited to him in the Facebook broadcast as no such conversation ever took place between him and our respected Mr. President.

“He could not have, therefore, communicated a non-existent conversation to another person, more so an unnamed individual on telephone. Accordingly, it is false, cheap and utterly in bad faith. Already, Dr. Onu has personally issued a rebuttal on the matter which has been circulated in the social media in a Press Statement dated August 30, 2015.

“However, it has become necessary to issue the foregoing clarification in view of ongoing efforts in some sections of the print and electronic media to further allude to the same phony Facebook broadcast without verifying the proof of its authenticity.

“Needless to say that such is capable of misleading the general public and by implication, injure the well-known integrity and honour which Dr. Onu holds sacred and guards jealously.  At this juncture, it is important to recall that soon after the inauguration of President Muhammadu Buhari on May 29, 2015; the social media was awash with the purported “news” of his “appointment” as Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

“Specifically on May 31, this year, a spurious Twitter account surfaced in his name where he was quoted as having “thanked God and the good people of Nigeria for this opportunity to serve”. This was despite the fact that Dr. Onu does not own or operate a personal Twitter account, thus prompting him to disclaim the broadcast in a Statement dated June 1, 2015, which was circulated in the social media.

“As one of the founding National Leaders of All Progressives Congress, APC, it is his conviction that nothing should be done to injure the rights of citizens to free speech, especially in a democracy.

“However, in the exercise of such rights, care and respect must be observed to ensure that it is done within the ambit of the law, guided by respect for the truth, good conscience and sincerity of purpose.

“It is hoped that in all circumstances, more so in a democracy, the truth should not be twisted to serve pre-determined ends nor should the rights of individuals be muzzled to score cheap political points.

“Finally, Dr. Onu reaffirms his faith in our democracy as the immutable vehicle of popular choice for a new Nigeria, where though tribe and tongue may differ, as brothers and sisters, united in the pursuit of a common destiny, we must continue to stand firm, resolute and together.”

  • INEC, others sued over ‘imposition’

    INEC, others sued over ‘imposition’

All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial aspirant  for Delta South Mr Temisan Omatseye has re-filed a suit at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory against the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) and others over the alleged imposition of a candidate.

He is challenging the alleged imposition of Prince Yemi Emiko as the APC’s candidate for the senatorial zone.

The plaintiff through his lawyers had filed a discontinuance notice to the initial suit at the Federal High Court.

It followed a Court of Appeal ruling that the Federal High Court lacks jurisdiction to entertain a matter in which the major reliefs sought are not against the Federal Government or any of its agencies.

The plaintiff, through his lead counsel, A.C. Ozioko, said he contested and won the APC primary election held last December 8.

But rather than his name, that of the third defendant who he said came second in the primary was sent to INEC purporting him to be the winner contrary to APC’s guidelines and constitution.

Omatseye said having won the primaries, he is the lawful Senatorial candidate of the APC in the 2015 general election for Delta South Senatorial District.

He is praying the court to hold that the APC is bound to submit his name to INEC as its candidate having won the primaries.

The plaintiff urged the court to declare that INEC’s acceptance, recognition and publication of Emiko’s name is illegal; as well as sought an order of injunction restraining Emiko from parading himself as the candidate.

The new suit has been assigned to Justice A.S. Adepoju.

  • Igbo rally coming

    Igbo rally coming

A huge rally is on the way for Igbo people in Lagos, and it is for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.

A group under the aegis of Ndigbo United Political Coalition (NUPC) has started a house-to-house campaign to deliver bulk votes for the APC in the forthcoming general elections.

Leader of the group in Badagry Division, Chief Livinus Nnodebem, said NUPC would sensitise the large Igbo community in the state to vote for the entire APC candidates who are contesting various political positions.

In a chat with reporters at the group’s secretariat in Maza-Maza, Lagos, Chief Nnodebem said the political coalition included Igbo citizens that were committed members of the APC.

He said the political group took the campaign for the 2015 general elections to the grassroots to ensure that the party gained the deserved victory in the state.

“Lagos is our place. Any Igbo man or woman in Lagos will do anything possible to make sure that APC wins the gubernatorial election because of the vast property we have in Lagos,’’ he said.

Chief Nnodebem faulted the claim that Ndigbo never spoke with one voice, saying Ndigbo respect hierarchy and would not deviate from the decision taken by fathers or elders.

‘‘If I call my people and say we are going to a particular direction, it would remain like that. Nobody will argue about that. Right from the beginning, we have been giving APC our bulk votes.

“APC has never lost in my area and it cannot lose in this election,’’ he said.

He further said the Igbo electorate in Badagry division would cast their votes for the APC, but urged the party to bring in Igbo representatives into the mainstream of decision-making process to ensure equal representation at all levels of the party in the state.

‘‘We are not asking for rice and money but to have a sense of belonging. What we want is to be recognised in the state. The average non-native in Lagos State is not interested in your billions of Naira. He is interested in the candidate. Although the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has enough money to spend in this election, that cannot help it to win Lagos State,’’ he assured.

Also speaking, chairman of the group in Oriade Local Development Area, Chief Ben Nnabuife said the APC has made remarkable impact in the lives of people of the state.

“As a leader, I can tell you categorically that we speak with one voice. We are sensitising our people on the need to reach out to fellow Igbo men and women in their neighbourhood to vote en masse for the APC.

Already, we have identified with APC in Lagos State and are present in other local government areas.

Chief Nnabuife added that 45 per cent of Igbo constitute the voting population in the constituency he resides in.

Meanwhile, APC governorship candidate, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode has inaugurated the state campaign of the group.
