  • Police detain APGA Aba North candidate

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Aba North Local Government Area of Abia State is concerned with the safety of its House of Assembly candidate, Destiny Nwagwu.

Some party chieftains alleged that men dressed in plain cloth with the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) inscription, between 6 and 7am yesterday, whisked Nwagwu from his home in Aba.

According to them, Nwagwu’s sudden disappearance could not be unconnected with his outcry over the “daylight robbery” of his victory at the polls.

They claimed that Nwagwu’s sudden disappearance was an attempt by the ruling party to make him chicken out in pursuing his legitimate case in court.

State Chairman Augustine Ehiemere confirmed Nwagwu’s arrest, but said he didn’t have details.

However, further investigations showed that Nwagwu was being held at the Aba Area Command of the police based on a petition written against him by the Transition Committee (TC) Chairman of Aba North, Mr. Charles Esonu.

Attempts to reach the police spokesman, Geoffrey Ogbonna, were unsuccessful. But a policeman, who pleaded for anonymity, confirmed that Nwagwu was in their custody.

He said: “Is Nwagwu above the law? He was not arrested, but only invited over allegations in a petition against him by the Aba North TC (Charles Esonu).

“He has been posting on social media, so many things against the petitioner. He was only invited to say what he knows. I learnt that the Area Commander (ACP Peter Okpara) will be looking into their case much later today (yesterday) because as we speak, the Area Commander is in Umuahia.”

Nwagwu, who confirmed his arrest by SARS officials at his residence in Aba about 6.30am, debunked allegations that he sent assassins against the petitioner.

He stressed that he went to INEC headquarters in Umahia with Ossy Prestige and some other persons on the day Esonu was allegedly attacked by assassins sent by him.

“I was arrested about 6.30am while driving out of my compound. Some people carrying guns in plain cloth rounded up my car and said I was under arrest. I asked for my offence but they said I will know when we get to the station. I begged to be allowed to tell my wife but they refused.

“It was when I got here (Area Command) that I learnt that the Aba North TC chairman wrote a petition against me, alleging threat to his life and that of his relatives.

“He (Esonu) claimed that on March 10, after leaving INEC Headquarters in Umuahia, that I sent assassins after him, which is not true. We only went to Umuahia over the controversies surrounding the March 9 elections, where it was clear that I won. I only went with Ossy Prestige, his DG and a few other persons. So, I don’t know where the thugs who attacked Charles Esonu came from.

“I don’t go with thugs and shouldn’t have sent any against Esonu because I know that I will get back my stolen mandate.”

  • Ex-Anambra CJ joins APGA

Former Chief Judge of Anambra State, Justice Peter Umeadi, yesterday announced his decision to join the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

According to him, his decision to join APGA was to enable him assist Governor Willie Obiano to consolidate on his good governance.

Justice Umeadi said his resorting to partisan politics would also enable him contribute his ‘widow’s mite’ to the growth of the party.

He said: “I’m picking the APGA card today to enable me assist the governor in continuing with the good work he is doing. Since he assumed office, he has not failed in paying workers’ salary.”

The retired justice described as dangerous, idling away after active service, insisting that he had a lot to offer in terms of knowledge and experience.

  • Applause, knocks for Anambra Assembly poll

Last week’s House of Assembly election in Anambra State has been hailed as successful, but some have also thumbed it down for its violence and irregularities, EMMA ELEKWA reports

The House of Assembly elections in Anambra State has come and gone, but the fallout of the exercise is still generating mixed reactions across the state.

Although the state was among those that governorship elections were not conducted, that of the state House of Assembly has generated mixed reactions.

While some described the exercise as one of the most peaceful and credible elections so far conducted in the state, others said it was characterised by irregularities.

One of the outcomes of the exercise which had received accolades was the landslide victory of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) at the poll.

Out of the 30 seats contested by over 518 candidates from various political parties, APGA won 24 seats, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) got six seats.

The state governor Willie Obiano applauded the people of the state for voting overwhelmingly for the party at the poll.

He was particularly happy for their peaceful, orderly and law-abiding disposition throughout the exercise.

Obiano who spoke through the Commissioner for information and Public Enlightenment, Mr C Don Adinuba, described the overwhelming support for the party as a referendum on the performance of the party.

He said the party’s victory has further bridged the gap between the executive and legislative arms of government, saying it would guarantee accelerated development and enhanced living standards.

He said, “The elections confirm Anambra’s reputation as Nigeria’s safest and most peaceful state, despite one or two incidents.

“Our people inspire the world with their love of democracy and the rapid development which comes with it.

“APGA won 24 of the 30 seats, leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with only six seats.

“Their support is as inspiring as it is challenging because it makes all of us in government constantly to seek to attain greater heights for the benefit of our people.

“With both the Executive and Legislative arms of government on the same page, our people are guaranteed accelerated development and enhanced living standards.”

Also speaking, National chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, Chief Victor Oye, said the party would continue to win elections in the state.

He said the state had been and would remain an APGA party state, insisting that no other party could win elections in the state.

Attributing the party loss in the last Presidential and National Assembly elections to what he called sentiments, Oye said such experience would not repeat itself again.

He said, “APGA is controlling and will continue to control a comfortable majority in the house. There is no other political party in Anambra state.

“The only party here is APGA. Forget about PDP and APC. They are just pretenders. They can’t win any competitive election in the state.

“What happened two weeks ago was a contraption. It wouldn’t be a parameter to measure the performance of APGA.

“People voted emotionally and had their eyes set somewhere and followed that line and satisfied themselves.

“I don’t have problems with that. There’s one thing I believe in life, whatever will be, will be.”

On his part, former House of Assembly aspirant, Njikoka 1 Constituency, Hon. Chidi Okoye, extolled the elected members of the party for their victory.

He also eulogised the Governor and his wife, as well as the National Chairman of the party, Chief Victor Oye for the wonderful outing.

He encouraged other members who left the party to return and join hands to make APGA and the state great again.

Meanwhile, member representing Idemili North and South Federal Constituency of Anambra state, Chief Obinna Chidoka condemned shootings recorded in some parts of the state during the exercise.

He described what took place on March 9 as a sham.

Chidoka who was particular about the shooting in Obosi, which led to the death of two persons in the community, asked the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu to investigate the killings.

The lawmaker regretted that despite assurances by security agencies of adequate safety of lives, more casualties were recorded, including loss of lives and gunshot injuries on over six persons in the community.

Narrating his experience at the scene of the incident, Chidoka said he escaped death by the whiskers.

“I was using my smart phone to video the commotion which greeted the sudden order by the DPO who was posted to Obosi on the eve of the election from Achalla Police station that the collation of results at Chuke Memorial Primary School, the ward collation centre be moved to Ogidi, the Local Government Headquarters when I started hearing gunshots.

“I was standing less than 10 metres across the road from the school while the shooting lasted.

“My orderly rushed me to a container used for mini shop but the owner who was already inside locked it and refused to open for us after we knocked severally.

“At that point, I decided to hide myself beside condemned tyres and goods until the end of the shootings by the Police and DSS personnel who parked their vehicles there.

“At the end of the incident, I was driving out when I saw the convoy of the Commissioner of Police, and turned back to meet him; it was then that we uncovered that two persons were killed during the shooting by police and DSS personnel,” he said.

The lawmaker said he could not believe the story attributed to the Police that the deaths recorded during the exercise resulted from rival cult clash.

Alleging that the security agencies and some INEC officials disappeared with the election materials after the incident, Chidoka said they later produced results which contrasted real results from the polling units.

He said, “IGP should look into the matter and direct that autopsy be conducted to unravel the cause of the deaths of the duo, while INEC should void the rerun election.

“The February 23 Presidential and National Assembly election had already produced results for all polling units in Idemili North and Idemili South Federal Constituency.

“After the interruption of collation of results at Chuke Memorial Primary School, Obosi on Feb.23, police submitted duplicate copies of results from various polling units to INEC.

“It was these results that INEC used to return the outcome of Presidential and Anambra Senatorial Central elections for Idemili North; my question is what then happened to the results of polling units across Obosi which police equally had in their custody? Why didn’t they also tender them?”

Also, some APGA faithful in Onitsha North 1 Constituency alleged that the result declared by INEC was the opposite of polling units’ results which showed that APGA won the election.

They protested the declaration of Mr Douglass Egbuna as the winner of Onitsha North 1 State constituency election by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The aggrieved members who were denied entrance into INEC premises, displayed placards which read “We want our mandate restored”, Tony Nwora is our choice”, “we cry for justice”, among others.

Transition Committee Chairman, Onitsha North Local Government Area, Mr Patrick Aghamba, urged INEC to declare Mr Nwora winner or cancel the election and conduct a fresh poll for the Constituency in the interest of justice.

Other speakers stated that there was colossal rigging of the election in favour of the PDP by the INEC at its collation centre in Onitsha, as INEC and Security Personnel did not allow APGA agents to monitor the exercise.

They urged the Independent National Electoral Commission to always follow Electoral Laws in discharging its responsibilities to encourage transparency.

A legal practitioner, Kaodienye Ibenegbu, expressed surprise at the number of people that died untimely in an election that was supposed to be civil and democratic.

He called on both the government and the INEC to up their game in surveillance during the exercise in order to make the results more acceptable.

A human rights activist, Comrade Obi Ochije, regretted that youths were used as political thugs, attributing it to lack of prosecution by relevant authorities.

The state Chairman, Nigerian Union of Journalist (NUJ), Comrade Emma Ifesinachi, wondered why an election involving voters of same homogeneity should be characterized by violence.

While blaming it on desperation among politicians, Ifesinachi charged the electoral body and security personnel to ensure expedition to all cases of electoral offences brought to them.

Reacting, the police spokesperson in the state, Haruna Mohammed, assured prosecution of all arrested suspects after thorough investigations were carried out on them.

  • Be magnanimous in victory, Ojukwu jnr advises Buhari

Mr Emeka Ojukwu jnr, Son of late Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to be magnanimous in victory and appoint Igbos in strategic positions during his second term.

Ojukwu jnr made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Onitsha while speaking on the re-election of President Buhari.

Ojukwu jnr had in November 2017 dumped the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) which was founded by his father for the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing Igbo interest as his decision.

He said the Igbos supported President Buhari more in the 2019 elections than in 2015 with over 25 per cent votes in three states of the South East because of his achievements in office.

“Buhari won Aba North Local Government Area based on his performance; he gave the business men and women in Ariaria market an independent power plant to boost their industries.

“The votes also doubled in Anambra and Ebonyi. We have Senators and Federal Representatives elected on the platform of APC in the South East.

“The Igbos are moving on to the Next level with the APC-led government,” he said.

Ojukwu jnr commended Buhari for committing N33 billion to the second Niger Bridge and for rehabilitating federal roads in the zone.

He however, urged the President to use his second term to address the perception that the South East and South-South were being marginalised.

“We look forward to a better spread in terms of appointments and inclusiveness as he has promised.

“We hope to see greater investment in the different sectors including power, roads and agriculture,” he said.

He urged the president to ensure fairness and equity and to see that the country outgrows the old divides based on ethnicity in the interest of national development.

“Mr President has served the nation in various high level positions and has reached the pinnacle; all that is left is his legacy.

“What will he do in these next four years for the benefit of the entire nation and how will he be remembered?

“The answer to these questions lies solely in his hands,” Ojukwu jnr said.

  • ‘Let’s secure future generations of Imo’

The Imo State governorship candidate of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Senator Ifeanyi Ararume, has said that an APGA-led government under his leadership will reposition education, health, collapsed infrastructure base, security, agriculture and industrialisation.

He also warned that the present and future generations of Imo State will not forgive the good people  if they remain passive and indifferent as Imo burns and their dreams for a virile state dashed on the altar of ‘’incompetent, corrupt, fraudulent and visionless leadership’’, as they currently have in the state.

Ararume stated this during the flag off of his campaign at the 40,000-capacity state stadium that was occupied by his supporters during the week.

Paying tribute to the founding fathers of the state, like De Sam Ounaka Mbakwe, Ndubuisi Kanu, Chief R.B.K Okafor and others, the governorship candidate said that a critical look at the state’s political trajectory, since the exit of those great leaders, shows a complete leadership failure, betrayal of hope and derailment of the dreams of the founding fathers.

He said: “As patriots, we are determined to take up the challenges of recovering Imo and rebuild it to restore the hope of our people in their state and future. An APGA-led government with me at the driver’s seat will reposition education, health, our collapsed infrastructure base, security, agriculture and industrialisation.

“On education, we shall ensure adequate funding of the sector, capacity building; prompt payment of salaries of lecturers and teachers — for adequate motivation, which will enhance learning in all our educational institutions.”

The two-time senator said it is regrettable that almost all the professionals course in the Imo State University are not accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC), noting that Medicine and Law faculties are the worst hit.

Senator Ararume added: “On assumption of office, my government will quickly put measure in place in concert with the NUC to secure accreditation for all the courses in the state university.

“The Imo State Polytechnic in Umuagwo will also receive a new lease of life as all its courses will get full accreditation under my watch, as governor. We shall encourage the missionary schools with subventions and grants to enable them run their schools more effectively.

“We will genuinely implement free education at both tertiary and secondary school levels. A synergy will be created between the education sector and the state’s economy to ensure that our institutions run courses and produce graduates that will serve the manpower needs for the economy. Education is our greatest industry and it will receive the attention it deserves.”

He further promised that agriculture will remain the mainstay of Imo State’s economy, as over 70 per cent of the people, who live in the rural areas, are engaged in agriculture, adding that extension services will be offered to the rural farmers with incentives to enable them produce more for domestic consumption and for commercial purposes.

Observing that unemployment has hit the roofs in the state, Ararume said that job creation will be a top priority for his government, promising that “an honest and properly” designed skill acquisition programmes will be implemented to make the youth self-reliant.

He said: “Workers will no longer cry before they can get their wages; prompt payment of salaries of civil servants and regular promotion of deserving workers will be carried out regularly to motivate the civil servants and harness their energies for development.

“Our pensioners who have been having a raw deal in the hands of insincere leaders will have a reason to be happy for serving the state. As senior citizens, the payment of their pensions shall remain a priority area to our government.”

The governorship hopeful also vowed to recover and return all illegal acquired lands and assets — in the state’s hand to their rightful owners, appealing to his people to help recover Imo and put an end to incompetent leadership.

  • 2019: Cleric warns against violence

The Cathedral Administ-rator of Mater Dei Catholic Church, Umuahia, the Abia State capital, Rev. Fr. David Aguleri has warned politicians in the state against playing bloody politics as the 2019 general election approaches.

The Nation gathered that following the lifting of the ban on campaigns by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the political atmosphere is gradually charging up as political parties begin to woo voters.

Fr. Aguleri, who is worried about the way the polity is being heated up by politicians, urged every candidate in 2019 to let fair play and the will of God prevail.

In his homily with the theme “He brings honesty and integrity”, the priest lamented the level of dishonesty among the leaders and the led in the society. He also warned that people who collect money before voting any politician to power do not have the moral right to demand for good governance.

Speaking to journalists at the end of the service the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) candidate Dr. Alex Otti said the theme of his campaign is “Enough is Enough”, noting that the state has gone through a lot of rot over the years especially in the last 16 years.

Otti said, “It is coincidental that the campaign is being flagged off on a Sunday. As a Christian I can worship anywhere. Today, I have chosen to worship in Catholic Church. My wife is a Catholic, so it is in keeping with the tradition of listening to our wives and that is why I am here at the Catholic Church to worship with them.

“We are telling Abia people that it is time we end all manner of ills that is going on in the state. We have gone through a lot of rot in this state and this time to bring the change and liberate our people from the bondage the bad leadership.

“We must do it this time around. Every hand must be on deck because we cannot continue like this. We are the worst state in Nigeria. There is nothing to show for the noise the present government in the state is making on the so-called projects that they have embarked on.

“Go through Abia, the roads are not [passable] and we have money. So, it is not about money, but because the monies that come to that state are not being used for the purpose that it was intended.

“My message to Abia people is that we must all rise up and break this chain and say that enough is enough. If you have followed what happened in the last elections, you will know that the process of writing results cannot happen anymore. The issue of securing votes is also a collective responsibility. People are wiser now. What happened in 2015 cannot happen again.

“They (PDP) used impunity at that time to rig the election because they were at the centre. Thank God that they are not at the centre today, so I believe that it will not happen and people’s votes will be protected. We will do everything possible to ensure that the results that come from the polling units are the results that are declared.

“I was never afraid and will never be afraid. Our party not being at the centre doesn’t matter. Our party wasn’t at the center when we won in Anambra. Our party wasn’t at the center when a couple of other parties won. What I believe is that with the process that has improved and with everybody’s eyes shining now, I believe that the things that happened in 2015 will not happen again.

“Abians should be vigilant, they shouldn’t be docile. They all come out and vote and stand there to ensure that votes are counted and results announced because at the end of the day, they will be the ultimate beneficiaries of our government.

“The government that we have had in the past was for godfathers and godsons. We are coming with a government that will be for the people. So, people should come out and vote massively for us and ensure that voting process in their various polling units is concluded.”Empowered Workshop in Enugu recently.

  • APGA receives 1,700 applications for waiver

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) says it has received no fewer than 1,700 applications for waivers from those wish to contest on the party’s platform.

Dr Victor Oye, National Chairman of APGA said this while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in interview in Awka on Tuesday.

Oye said that the high number of waiver applications was an attestation of the popularity of the party.

The party chairman said a good number of the waivers were granted in spite falling short of requirements, especially on duration of membership.

He however added that some waivers were from people and agents with intent to destabilise the party.

“There was wide acceptance of APGA across Nigeria; people were surging to run on our platform, we had a total of 1,700 applications for waiver.

“We granted a good number of them even when they did not meet minimum period of 18 months of membership, this was in order to avoid crisis and overheating the system.

“APGA has 283 candidates for Federal House of representatives, so you can see the subscription level which is an indication of the impact we will make in 2019,” he said.

Oye said the recent discontent in the party was exaggerated and thanked Nigerians for their support for APGA.

He promised that APGA would provide a virile alternative to Nigeria’s leadership question.

Ahead of the general elections, he promised that APGA would run massive and issue-based campaigns and urged other political parties to play by the rules.

The chairman gave the assurance that all genuinely aggrieved members of APGA would be pacified, calling on them to key into the ongoing reconciliation process.

“We shall strongly consider the report and recommendations of the national reconciliation committee whenever it is submitted.

“I must state however, that it is not a probe panel but a reconciliatory process to pacify those who are genuinely aggrieved,” he said.

  • APGA: Idemili South stakeholders petition Obiano over candidate imposition

Aspirants and members of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Idemili South Local Government Area, Anambra have petitioned the party hierarchy over the inconclusive primary for its State Constituency election.

Their petition was sent to Gov. Willie Obiano, Dr Victor Oye and Chief Norbert Obi, APGA BoT Chairman, National Chairman and Anambra chairman respectively.

The aspirants, no fewer than five in number led other leaders of the party in the area on a protest held at the state party office and the Government House in Awka on Wednesday.

In the petition, entitled “Rejection of Hon. Chuka Ezenwunne as our 2019 House of Assembly Candidate — A vote of No Confidence”, called on Obiano to save the party from possible implosion.

Some of the placards they carried had inscriptions including, “Idemili South rejects imposition’, “Idemili South rejects Ezenwunne” and “Idemili South is APGA” among others.

Ezenwunne is the current member representing the constituency in Anambra House of Assembly.

Mr Tony Ezekwelu, who read the resolution of the chapter, said the primary was inconclusive with no winner announced, adding that they were rejecting attempts to impose Ezenwune on the people.

Ezekwelu said the member had failed to provide leadership for the party in the constituency and that he could not win general election due to poor performance.

Another aspirant, Mr Ikechukwu Okolo, said a free and credible primary should be held to produce a candidate that would be acceptable to the majority.

Okolo, who is from Nnobi, urged APGA leadership to hearken to the cries of the people and avoid an imposition that could spell doom for the party in the main election.

Mr Chukwuka Mbaegbu, Youth Leader of the party in Idemili South, described the primary election as most unfortunate.

Mbaegbu said if the concerns raised were not addressed, youths in the area would unanimously pull out of the party and join another as they could not work against the collective aspiration of the people.

“The primary election was pure illegality, only statutory delegates were allowed to vote, ad-hoc delegates were denied voting rights, they did not count the votes.

“As we speak, we do not know the result of the primary but we heard they have already settled for Ezenwunne,” he said.

Addressing the protesters, Mr Tony Nwakile, Treasure of APGA in Anambra, said he would transmit their petitions to the appropriate quarters for consideration.

Nwakile, however, said APGA had not come up with official lists of winners of primary election and advised them to also explore the appeal option.

Chief Ifeatu Obi-Okoye, Political Adviser to Obiano, appealed to the petitioners to remain calm assuring them that all grievances would be addressed.

Obi-Okoye said the complaints were important to Obiano as the leader of the party and promised to tell him how the people feel about the situation of the party in their area.

“I advise we do not make the use of all what we hear on social media, they contain a lot of lies; let us always look at our issues as a family matter.

“Let us not allow all this to affect our election, the coming election is not about any individual, it is about our party, I thank you for your peaceful protest.

“I will let the governor know how the aspirants, the stakeholders and the leaders in the constituency feel about the development, whatever it is, we will resolve it as a party.

“We will resolve all these issues and make sure we find a middle course to enable us win Idemili South and Idemili North,” he said.

Reacting to the protest against him, Ezenwunne said he was aware of the meeting where the resolution was made but described it as factional.

He said those who were defeated in an election should be gallant enough to accept defeat; adding that he was not worried about it. (NAN)

  • APGA, Frank Nneji and Imo guber race

Though it has often been argued, and very rightly, that the process of getting to political office in our environment is skewed in favour of the affluent and the powerful to the detriment of quality, integrity and competence, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has always prided itself on having an unblemished profile.

In line with this posture, as widespread public outcry greeted the high costs of obtaining expression of interest and nomination forms in the All Progressives Congress {APC} and the Peoples Democratic Party {PDP}, APGA leaders pegged theirs at far below what the former charged its aspirants to various offices.

However, it is equally too glaring not to note that even as the N10m APGA governorship aspirants pay for the expression of interest and nomination forms is less than half the N22m extracted from the same office seekers in APC, it is still higher than PDP’s N6m.

Without the intention of being uncritical of the national Chairman, Chief Victor Oye, who is wont to argue that his party stands out untainted, one must concede that it is not often that APGA is rippled by serious controversies. At least, not the type usually emanating from the APC and PDP over allegations of imposition of candidates, manipulation of internal electoral process, godfather syndrome and the anomaly of concessioning party positions and electoral offices to moneybags..

Yet, it may be logical to argue that this may be largely because beyond overseeing the relatively peaceful change of baton at the Government in Awka, APGA, in contrast to the big duo, has never faced the challenge of organising high-stake primaries for hotly contested  positions, like the presidency or governorship {elsewhere}.

That is why as the party’s gubernatorial primary to produce a candidate for the race to Douglas House in Owerri, Imo state, inches closer by the hour, the attention the exercise is likely to attract, will be anything but cursory. It presents the real test for the ‘untainted’ and ‘unblemished’ APGA.

Since Chief Rochas Okorocha rode on the party’s platform to be governor in 2011{but later collapsed his own small chip of the group into the then emerging APC}, this is the brightest chance APGA is having to reclaim the seat.

Reason is partly because of the feeling of despondency and disappointment pervading the state over the performance of the current administration. Moreover, the deep-rooted crisis in the APC in the state which has festered for some time now, will be a major drawback for the party as it returns to the electorate for the renewal of its mandate.

Now, let us factor in what has been happening in neighbouring Anambra state. Former and incumbent governors, Peter Obi and Willie Obiano have demonstrated {and the latter is still demonstrating} that the so called dividends of democracy are deliverable under APGA. And herein lies another reason why it is correct to assert that Ndi Imo are praying fervently for the extension to Owerri the good governance the ‘cock’ party has entrenched in Awka as captured in the ‘Willie is Working’ slogan.

However, to be able to harness the obvious advantages it is likely to go into the governorship election with come February, APGA leadership owes itself, the aspirants and the party, the duty to ensure that the exercise that will produce its governorship candidate tomorrow is not only transparent, but also fair to all concerned.

A level playing field for all the aspirants in the primary election should be such that will override party leaders’ personal gains {especially where they contrast with the party’s interests}. The party should ensure fair play and transparency, do away with the influence of money and vote-buying, as well as avoid the manipulation of the process in favour of a particular contestant. With the fractures in some other parties as a lesson, APGA leaders must be mindful of the fact that a flawed or skewed exercise is a recipe for crisis {with attendant pitfalls} which must be avoided or its chances of winning the election will be blighted.

APGA should also commit itself to ensuring that tomorrow’s primary produces a flag-bearer whose personality positively resonates with the people of Imo state. It has been consistently argued elsewhere that the party’s surest path to Douglas House and breaking Chief Obiano’s ‘lonesomeness’ as the only governor on the party’s platform, is for the delegates to vote for a clean, marketable and credible aspirant; one with integrity and track record of achievements, and one that is not haunted by past {political, financial and social} misdeeds in office or in private life.

The candidate that will fly APGA’s flag in the election must be a man with vision for Imo state who has been able to concretise his ideas into practicable work-plans backed with strategies for implementation. Call it manifesto!

The delegates must equally be conscious of the need to endorse an aspirant whose campaign will not at any point be trailed by controversies or enmeshed in scandals. APGA needs a candidate who will confidently dare other party’s representatives and engage them in contestation of ideas without the fear of being outshone.

There is absolutely no doubt that no one in the line-up of aspirants in the APGA primary tomorrow is in this mould like Mr. Frank Nneji, OON, businessman, entrepreneur, philanthropist, foremost transporter, prudent manager of scarce resources, and a Nigerian citizen of enviably high standing and repute. In fact, with Frank Nneji as APGA’s candidate in the election, it will not be an exaggeration to liken the governorship seat in Owerri as a low hanging fruit waiting for the party to pluck.

One can even lay high odds that neither the former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Emeka Ihedioha, who emerged PDP’s candidate on Tuesday, nor any contender from among those jostling for APC’s flag {including Senator Hope Uzodimma}, can compare with the founder and Managing Director of the ABC Transport group of companies. This is in terms of marketability, integrity, capability, pedigree and track record.

Unlike other aspirants and candidates in the race, Nneji appears to be the one with the clearest vision and better view of the road ahead, who evidently has painstakingly prepared himself for the demands of the office he is aiming to occupy. The first pointer to this is his one-of-a-kind book launched in May this year. So highly rated is the business memoir he titled Who Says You Can’t? Timeless Lessons and Experiences in Business, that it has been described as being to the business world what Barak Obama’s The Audacity of Hope is to the American dream, and Bill Gates’ Business @ The Speed of Thought to the computer software industry and the corporate world.

But perhaps, more than anything else, what stands Nneji out from the pack is his impressive manifesto as meticulously articulated on his www.nneji.com, where it is noticeable that he has dissected the various problems confronting Imo with blueprints on how he intends to tackle them to the benefit of the people of the state. Nneji has in the Rebuild Imo vision document diligently outlined the various areas of need to include Agriculture, Transportation {covering road construction, rehabilitation and maintenance}, Education, Health, Housing, Power, Small and Medium scale Industries, Ease of Doing Business, Tourism, and, of course, Security.

Making the document realistic and credible is that it did not stop at identifying the problems in the various areas x-rayed, but specific strategies have also been integrated into the analysis with a view to remedying the situations and pulling the state away from the brink.

Nneji is the only aspirant in the race to have travelled abroad to feel the pulse of Ndi Imo in the diaspora  –  most of whom showed that they were more abreast of goings-on at home than some of those living in Nigeria. At the town hall meetings held in various cities in the United States of America, the aspirant was mandated to go back and fix the ‘broken’ Imo. He was charged to draw from his uncommon capacity and drive which made it possible to grow a small road transport firm with a few mini buses in 1993, to today’s group of companies called ABC Transport Plc  –  with investments even beyond the transport sector and auto assembly, annual turnover running into billions of naira and the laudable credit of being the second employer of labour in Imo.

If he gets to his destination, he will not be encumbered by the burden of sustaining the ‘protection’ by a god-father with the resources of the state {because unlike most politicians, he is not riding on the back of such a figure}. Rather, his allegiance and indebtedness will be to the people of Imo state through whose goodwill and votes he earned his approval to govern.

In other words, as a prudent helmsman who is used to making prudent use of available resources, he will be repaying the good people of Imo for their support, but with good governance.

  • APGA South senatorial ticket: Many rivers to cross for Bianca Ojukwu

IT is no longer news that Bianca, the widow of the late Ikemba Nnewi, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, is seeking to get the ticket of the  All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) to contest for the Anambra South senatorial seat in the 2019 election.

The matter for the former beauty queen is the numerous hurdles that are standing between her and her quest to achieving her political ambition.

One of the challenges staring the former ambassador of Nigeria to Spain in the face is  the formidable opposition in APGA that she must subdue  to  clinch the ticket and go on to represent the party in the coming election.

Bianca, it was learnt, is very  dear to the heart of the state governor, Chief Willie Obiano, to represent her people at the Red Chambers,  but majority of the APGA family are said to be against such move.

The late Ojukwu’s wife is contesting  for the position in APGA against other solid opponents like the oil magnate, Dr Ifeanyi Ubah and Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu.

Though Bianca  has the support of one of the richest men in Anambra, Dr Godwin Maduka and former Governor of Imo state, Chief Ikedi Ohakim among other chieftains,   feelers from the party have it that   the chairman of Capital Oil and Gas, Ubah is being favoured to grab the  ticket .

During the retreat and book launch of the party penultimate week at Finotel Hotel in Awka, entitled “APGA, the Trials, Tribulations and Triumphs “, the former National Chairman of the party, Chief Victor Umeh, reminded the guests how Ubah rescued the party when it had problems in 2012.

He told the audience that Ubah deserves compensation, adding that no other person had suffered for the party more than the Capital Oil boss.

Umeh’s glowing tributes about Ubah were greeted with some murmurings, suspected to be  from the camp of Bianca and her promoters who were all in attendance.

Apart from Umeh’s open endorsement of  Ubah, some APGA chieftains told The Nation that the ambition of Ojukwu’s wife is tearing their party apart and “if not checked by the powers that be, it might lead to the party losing Anambra South senatorial election in 2019.”

The other  battle confronting  the delectable widow of  the ex- Biafra warlord, is the internal  wrangling with members of  her late husband’s family.

Some members of the Ojukwu’s family are reported  not to be  in good terms with the ex-beauty queen turned politician. Some of them, including Ikemba The Second, Chief Emeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, are said to be seeing  her as a stranger in their family.

Besides, The Nation gathered that some of the family members and APGA faithful, see her as arrogant, pompous and a snub who will never remember any of them if she wins any election.

In spite of the numerous  rivers she has to cross, political observers in the state believe that Bianca still has some things  working for her. “ Though she may not be an oil magnate or a money bag, being the widow of Ojukwu and being the daughter of late former governor of the  old Anambra State, Chief Christian C Onoh, endears her to many of us. Again, Mrs Ojukwu, who is a lawyer is the most qualified among the contestants and has the pedigree and mien to wrestle the ticket from the others,” said  a chieftain of the party loyal to Bianca  who did not want his name  in print.

Another  political bigwig in the state, Dr Godwin Maduka from Umuchukwu in Orumba South Local Government Area, that falls within the zone, believes that Bianca is the best thing that could happen to the zone.

Just like Umeh publicly sought support for Ubah,  Maduka urged the people of Anambra South to support the ambition of Bianca Ojukwu, as she had the capacity to showcase Nigeria as a country of heroes and heroines through her academics, family and political experiences.

According to him:”We know her life history.  Money  alone cannot be equated to leadership. Having the education, money, compassion, empathy, sympathy and having passed through poverty make her the best to run for the seat.

“We should appreciate Bianca Ojukwu for agreeing to run for public office.  I believe that she is not only qualified, but over qualified.

“I am sure she has learnt a lot from her late husband, Ikemba Nnewi, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, the Igbo supreme leader and from her father, late C C Onoh. I’m happy she has accepted to run for public office, “Maduka said

To show his support for  Bianca’s ambition,  Maduka at the book launch and retreat of the party in Awka, donated N20million to dwarf Ubah, Ukachukwu and others’ donations.

The fate of Bianca Ojukwu as it stands, is hanging in the balance, as the people of Nnewi are said not to be in support of her ambition since their son, Dr Ubah is also in the race.

But the wife of the late  Ikemba appeared unruffled as she is said to be convinced that majority of the people, especially the youths,  are solidly behind her aspirations.

As the aspirants continue their quests for the senatorial ticket of APGA in the south zone, would Bianca react in the political arena, the feat that fetched her  the most beautiful queen crown?  Only time will tell.
