  • I’ll not discriminate against anyone – APC candidate

The Governorship candidate of the All Progressives Party (APC) in Kwara, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has promised that his administration would not discriminate against anybody if elected as governor on March 9.

AbdulRazaq made the promise on Wednesday at Ajase-Ipo in Irepodun local government during the continuation of his governorship campaign tour of Kwara South.

“Our government won’t discriminate against any section of Kwara. We’ll share jobs and appointments fairly,” he told the Olupo of Ajase-Ipo.

He also pledged to rebuild public schools and hospitals, strengthen entrepreneurship and small -scale businesses in a bid to boost internally- generated revenues.

AbdulRazaq pledged to accord utmost respect to the traditional institutions and ensure that local government areas are allowed to serve the grassroots.

“But to do this, we urge you to vote for APC. We don’t want to be in the opposition in Kwara.

“We have a lot of great programmes for our people. Importantly, we won’t disrespect our traditional institutions. We will honour our royal fathers.

“We’ve had enough of bad governance and the bleeding of public resources.

“Let’s try something new and different. Our opponents have run out of ideas. We will bring development.

“We will take special interest in the security of lives and properties. At the moment, there is hardly any functional bank from Ekiti to Offa.

  • Masari wants 60 per cent empowerment schemes for women

Masari wants 60 per cent empowerment schemes for women

June 11, 2017 (NAN) Gov. Aminu Masari of Katsina State has called on elected officials, agencies and other initiators of empowerment support schemes to allocate not less than 60 per cent to women.

Masari made the call in Bakori on Sunday while launching  distribution of 30 cars, 100 motorcycles, 70 sewing machines and 20 generating sets as empowerment items donated by the representative of Bakori/Danja Federal Constituency, Rep. Amiru Tukur.

The governor explained that women faced enormous challenges, especially in the rural areas, where they were mostly bread winners, sponsoring children’s  education and other burdens.

He said women always ensured that their earnings went to family upkeep more than men.

Masari commended Tukur for the gesture and urged other lawmakers to emulate him to empower the people in accordance with the All Progressives Party (APC) manifesto and election promises.

He advised party officials to ensure fairness and level playing ground for both old and new party members  in the spirit  of democracy.

“People are willing to defect to APC from various platforms  at national and local levels,  such movements should be welcomed.

“There is no basis for sideling members on account of period stay in the party as individual members have  different contribution to make to the party’s progress,’’ Masari said.

Earlier, Tukur said the beneficiaries were from the 22 political wards in the constituency and added that the empowerment scheme was a continuous exercise through which others had benefitted in the past.

The Katsina State APC Chairman, Alhaji Shitu Shitu, commended Tukur for the gesture and urged other lawmakers to emulate him.

He said that empowerment schemes were desirable in the  communities.

Some of the beneficiaries, Sahabu Bade, Haruna Garba, Garba Tandama and Hauwa Iro, expressed gratitude for the gesture and added that Tukur had lived up to the expectations of his constituents.

  • APC chieftain urges KOSG to re-open tertiary institutions

Chief Simeon Ogundele, a chieftain of the All Progressives Party (APC), has appealed to Gov. Yahaya Bello of Kogi to re-open state-owned tertiary institutions shut down in January.

Ogundele spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria ( NAN) on Wednesday in Lokoja, after meeting with the leadership of the students’ unions.

NAN reports that lecturers in the state’s five tertiary institutions embarked on strike in January over government’s failure to settle their salaries and arrears of assorted allowances.

The institutions include the Kogi State University, Anyigba, Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, College of Education (Technical) Lokoja, College of Education, Ankpa, and Kogi State School of Engineering, Lokoja.

The politician said that it was wrong to keep students perpetually at home, and regretted that they had become victims of the lingering feud between lecturers and the state government.

He wondered why lecturers should be frustrated into embarking on strike over unpaid salaries, and suggested that teachers’ salaries be made a priority in view of their roles in societal growth.

“In developed societies, the teacher is the first to be considered for such rights. Here, it is a different situation; this is sad,” he said.

‎Ogundele advised the governor to “critically look into the lingering disagreement”, stressing that students, parents and even the lecturers were tired of the indolence.

“The governor should immediately pay what is owed the lecturers in the interest of the state.

“It is dangerous for the society to keep the youths at home for so long, because they could be tempted to jump into vices which will not help the society,” he said.

Mr Philip Omepa, President of the Kogi State University chapter of the Students Union Government, who also spoke with NAN, urged the governor to look into the plight of the students and take urgent steps toward re-opening the schools.

“The youths are the future of the society; the quality of the future depends solely on the way we treat the youths today,” he pointed out.

Omepa said that the students were tired of staying at home and wanted to go back to their classes.

  • Supreme Court to decide Tambuwal’s fate Dec 9

Supreme Court to decide Tambuwal’s fate Dec 9

The Supreme Court has scheduled judgment for December 9 in an appeal by some members of the All Progressives Party (APC) challenging the emergence of Aminu Tambuwal as the candidate of the party for the last governorship election in Sokoto State.

A panel of the court, led by Justice Bode Rhodes-Vivour fixed the date Tuesday after parties adopted their written briefs in the case.

Respondents in the appeal are the APC, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and Hon Aminu Waziri Tambuwal.

The appellants Alhaji Umaru Dahiru and Barrister Aliyu Abubakar Sanyinna, who were also governorship aspirants of the APC in 2015 are challenging the propriety of Tambuwal’s nomination by the APC as its governorship candidate.

They alleged that delegates list for the primary election of the APC conducted on December 4, 2014 at Giginya Stadium,  Sokoto was swapped.

The appellants want the court to, among others, determine whether Tambuwal was nominated in compliance with provisions of the Electoral Act 2010 and the APC 2014 guidelines for the nomination of candidates for elective offices.

While adopting the appellants’ brief, their lawyer, Ikoro M. Ikoro urged the court to reverse the decision of the Court of Appeal

The Court of Appeal had held that the appellants’ suit had become academic exercise by virtue of the election of Tambuwal in the April 11, 2015 governorship poll.

He argued that the Appeal Court erred in law by holding that their joint suit has no life to sustain it simply because of the conducted general election.

He further argued that the April 11, 2015 general election cannot take life out of their case or render it academic exercise because the suit had been filed on January 27, 2015 long before the general election was conducted.

Ikoro, who gave a background to his client’s case, alleged that the respondents delayed the hearing of the case at the trial court through frivolous applications.

He contended that since the delay was at the instance of the respondents, they (the respondents) should not be allowed to benefit from the delay which made expeditious hearing of the case impossible at the trial court.

The appellants prayed court to invoke its power under Section 22 of the Supreme Court Act to resolve the issues in contention as a court of first instance in the circumstances of the case.

Tambuwal’s lawyer, Sunday Ameh (SAN) argued that the reliefs sought by the appellants at the trial court have been overtaken by event since the election has been held and Tambuwal declared as winner of the April 11, 2015 election.

Ahmeh urged the court to dismiss the appeal on the ground that it had become pure academic issue without any live.

Lawyer to the APC, Jibrin Okutepa (SAN) argued in similar manner.
