EFCC planning to cook up allegations against me, Melaye alleges

Senator Dino Melaye claimed yesterday that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) was plotting to cook up allegations against him.
Melaye on his twitter handle @dino_melaye said that he had credible information that the commission had already started carrying out forensic investigations on all his bank accounts.
He, however, said that he was ready for the commission’s investigation:
“I have credible information that EFCC is trying to cook up allegations against me. Forensic checks on all my accounts. I ready for una,” he said.
On Thursday, the social media was awash with the news that the EFCC planned to arrest 23 senators for questioning including Senator Melaye.
Other Senators who were said to be on the purported interrogation list of the EFCC include Senate President Bukola Saraki and his Deputy, Ike Ekweremadu, Minority Leader Godswill Akpabio as well as Sen. Stella Oduah.
During the week, the Senate rejected the appointment of the Acting Chairman of the EFCC, Ibrahim Magu after a two hour screening.
The screening of Magu went sour when Melaye introduced a report by the Department of State Security (DSS) which stated that Magu was “unfit for the position”.
The report alleged that the EFCC boss hobnobs with corrupt individuals and was living in a N40 million house which was rented for him by an individual under investigation by the commission.
The report went on to say that Magu would constitute a liability to the anti-corruption drive of the present administration.
However, Magu denied the N40 million house allegation saying that his house was rented by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Speaking after the confirmation hearing, Magu said that he remained the chairman of the commission, countering the Senate President Saraki who said during plenary on Wednesday that “Magu ceases to be the chairman of the commission going by the rejection.”

Unilorin dismisses allegations against VC, JAMB registrar

The University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) has denied allegations of fraud levelled against its Vice Chancellor (VC), Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali and his predecessor, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, by the Academic Union of Universities (ASUU).

UNILORIN described the allegations as infantile lies, “largely empty and merely rehearsed to make it look real”.

Some ASUU officers in the Southwest petitioned Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) accusing Ambali and Oloyede of pension fund scam, running into N2.5 billion, and called on the anti-graft agency to  probe the matter.

But the university management dismissed the petition, saying those behind it were “enemies of progress who are aghast at the pace of progress  being recorded by the university daily”.

A statement by UNILORIN’s Head of Corporate Affairs, Mr. Kunle Akogun, said there was nothing new in the allegations. He noted that “the same fellows made the same allegations last August while shamefacedly kicking against the well-merited appointment of Prof. Oloyede as registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

“And, of course, no one took them seriously, as even President Muhammadu Buhari is not unaware of the due diligence credentials of the successive administrations of the University of Ilorin.

“What the administration of Prof. Oloyede did was what the law and ICPC directed all universities to do: that instead of the 7.5 per cent being hitherto deducted from the basic salary of workers, the deduction ought to have been from the gross emolument.”

Akogun added that the clarification had since guided the management’s action and the deductions were being credited to the Pension Fund Administrators’ (PFA) accounts as and when due, till the government started deducting from source.

“It is also a fallacy to allege that the university’s management did not carry the unions along in all these. The truth is that management met with the unions on the new development and all parties agreed that the PFAs should be credited the full 7.5 per cent. It was the initial under-deduction that was spread for payment over a 24-month period. This had since been concluded a couple of years ago,” Akogun added.

The spokesperson, who described the petitioners as “disgruntled elements” and “remnants of the notorious 419”, noted that their activities within the last one year had been targeted at disrupting the university’s uninterrupted academic calendar.

He urged the EFCC to discountenance the petition, noting that “we are certain that the anti-graft agency will duly consign it to where it rightly belongs: the trash can”.

  • Seun Egbegbe denies phone theft allegations

Seun Egbegbe denies phone theft allegations

Embattled filmmaker, marketer and CEO of Ebony Films, Seun Egbegbe, has denied stealing some phones as alleged. According to the estranged lover of popular actress, Toyin Aimakhu, he was on his way to get money from his car to pay for the phones when an alarm was raised, with the shop attendant accusing him of theft.

An official statement from Egbegbe states that though story is pretty laughable, he has a responsibility to set the records straight.

“To say the least, the news did not only grossly misinform unsuspecting public; it also portrays traces of campaign of calumny by some mercenary hell bent in destroying my name, for reasons best known to them…

“I want to state here categorically and emphatically that though I was at Computer Village to address some issues, but I was never arrested for stealing 10 iPhone 7s, as stated by the writer of the story. The matter has since been resolved by the Nigeria Police; and the issue of me stealing phone is devilish from the said writer,” he said.

According to information, a mob at the Computer Village in Ikeja, Lagos State, Tuesday, beat up the filmmaker for allegedly stealing nine iPhones at a shop in the area. It was learnt that Egbegbe had gone to the shop around 10am with the intention of buying some iPhones.

He was said to have left the shop with the phones, telling the seller that he wanted to pick money from his jeep. However, according to reports, he attempted to leave in his vehicle without paying for the phones when the sales boy raised the alarm, drawing the attention of other traders in the area who stopped the vehicle and dragged Egbegbe out.

  • ‘Allegations of non-performance against Obiano, infantile, laughable’

‘Allegations of non-performance against Obiano, infantile, laughable’

Senior Special Assistant on Media, Strategic Communications and Legislative Matters to Governor Willie Obiano, Prince Oliver Okpala, offers reasons for the political tension in Anambra State and responded to criticisms and allegation that the governor has failed to deliver dividends of democracy. Excerpts

It is understandable that whenever an election is coming everyone will get into the fray and in such circumstances there would be mudslinging, unwarranted attacks and lies just to curry favour and to smear the image of opponents.  This is today what is playing out in Ananabra State by opponents and detractors of Anambra State Government under the leadership of Governor Willie Obiano. There is nothing to fight for rather the opposition has gone all out to discredit the government and Governor Obiano for cheap political gains.

“But it must be understood that seeking power by all means is not a virtue but a sign of depravity and moral bankruptcy.  The legendary Martin Luther King Jnr. even warned his fellow comrades while they struggled for their legitimate right to self actualisation in The United States. He said: “In the process of gaining our rightful place, we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred. We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline. We must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence. Again and again, we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force”

“This is the least that is expected of those who must fight to gain any manner of victory, be it political or otherwise amongst civilized people anywhere. But unfortunately, some would – be aspirants or candidates in the forthcoming Anambra State governorship race have already saturated the media with venom even when the campaigns have not begun. This is an ominous sign that things may get very messy if they don’t call themselves to order.

Some of these would – be aspirants have even gone into the fray of creating enemies for themselves instead working hard to promote their candidacy and their questionable image. They have set up media teams just for the sake of attacking Governor Obiano.  They use all sorts of strategies such as blackmail, name calling, lies and rumours for no just cause.

But Obiano is not perturbed, neither is he moved because he knows that it is the people that would deliver him when the time comes. He has remained in touch with the people, listening to them and ensuring that their wishes and aspirations are taken care of. And this is all that matters to the amiable, focused, principled and visionary governor.

“These political jobbers are only interested in their pocket and therefore throw caution and discretion to the wind in discharging their hatchet job. They should be called to order because Anambra State is bigger than any individual or group of persons.  Sometimes one reads with concern, materials they circulate on the social media like a recently one purportedly written by the CEO of a conglomerate who hails from Anambra State.

They make boastful and extremely inflaming comments that anyone who understands the burden of leadership and has love for the people would never dare to make. The truth is that most of these ill hearted attackers should go for political self-development.

“They should know that politics must not entail spewing lies against political opponents neither should it degenerate into invoking fire and brimstone against fellow citizens who share contrary views with theirs. Anambra people are wise and discerning; there are many of them who know the truth and cannot therefore, be hoodwinked into following empty loud – mouthed political contractors. These angry politicians should not take their personal weaknesses and moral failure into the political arena of Anambra, a state that prides herself as the Light of the Nation.

“All the allegations leveled against Governor Obiano are at best infantile and laughable.  So far what is glaring is that the nauseating posture and utter lack of decorum by these individuals do not positively portray anyone with the ambition to run the affairs of Anambra State. They ought to know that making controversial, unfounded, malice-ridden public commentaries against real and imagined political opponents is not a mark of brilliance but of mischief and bad manners. As the Igbo’s say “he who brings home ant-infested faggots should expect the visit of lizards”

One of them has even floated media outfits and is now in the habit of unleashing his editors on the governor just to pull him down. And in their desperation, they lack political education, finesse and have no sense of limit. These traits are a threat to the political future of Anambra State and the people must all rise up to make sure that these political misfits do not pollute the political air of Anambra State. The truth is that Governor Obiano does not deserve this atrocious campaign of calumny.

“Some of these emergency social media activists live in Lagos, Abuja, Port-Harcourt and other cities and so are completely unaware of the sterling performance of Governor Obiano in Anambra State. They should come home, because nobody drove them from their homes, and they ought to remember that they cannot write the story of Anambra State with their China made smart phones in distant lands as they try to destroy Anambra which could also be a producer of such phones if not for their perfidious and sabotaging attitude.

Great societies and nations are built by citizens who are patriotic, not grumblers and spoilers.  Anyway, the good thing about all these is the governor is calm, collected and focused on his job, which is to make Anambra people continue to smile. The governor has refused to be distracted by the political charlatans and jobbers who see nothing good in a governor that has brought much finesse and humanity to governance just because they are bent on pulling him down.

For instance, in recent times, the social media especially has been awash with stories portraying the Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano, as a failure. But this smells of a well funded smear campaign launched with mercenaries and several social media attack dogs.

But if we must not be deceived we have to revisit the meaning of failure. Now, if a man who, in less than one year in office cleaned up Anambra State of crime and criminality is a failure then one must prefer to be a failure.

In the not too distant past, Anambra was a no- go- area, a forbidden land of a sort and a place which people dreaded to visit. But Governor Obiano wiped the state clean, chased out kidnappers and armed robbers from the town, cleaned up Upper Iweka and restored the confidence of Anambra people in their home state.  Having tackled the issue of crime, today there are people from the Netherlands, India, Australia and other parts of the world working in the state without any incident.

If a man who started an agricultural revolution programme that has placed Anambra on the agricultural map of Africa is a failure, then let me be one!  Recently, the Minister of Agriculture, Chief Audu Ogbe, the Governor of the Central Bank, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, the Kebbi State Governor and Chairman of Agricultural Committee, Senator Atiku Abubakar Bagudu all were at Coscharis Farms in Anaku, Ayamelum Local Government Area of Anambra State to witness the impressive and uncommon collaboration between the state government and Coscharis Farms that was facilitated by the Obiano administration. As the gigantic Combined Harvester deployed on the expansive rice farms came alive, the guests were full of appreciation for the governor’s visionary leadership. The Chairman of the Coscharis Group, Dr. Cosmas Maduka, could not hide his admiration and gratitude as his almost 30 year-old dream had come to pass.  Indeed the rice farm project is a clear sign of the commitment of the government to providing the enabling environment for businesses to thrive. If his is a failure then let me fail like this!

“If a man who built six bridges simultaneously in two years while the country’s economy was sliding into a recession is a failure then that must be a good failure, for it is true that in the past two years governor Obiano has built bridges including Arroma Bridge (Awka), Kwata Bridge (Awka), Amawbia Bridge (Amawbia), Ebenebe Bridge (Awka North), Aguleri-Otu Bridge, which is the longest in the South-East, and Iyiora Bridge in Anam. These bridges are there for all to see.

This is an unusual feat accomplished in the history of Anambra State. With this record, Governor Obiano has demystified the once unapproachable and unthinkable task of building bridges in this clime, especially by state governments. If this fit into the narrative of being a failure, then I pray to be one but in the mould of Governor Obiano!

“This so called ‘failure’ of a man increased the salaries of workers by 15% at a time when other state governments were borrowing to pay salaries.

Only recently, he abolished several levies and taxes as a way of cushioning the effects of the recession which the country is going through. In that uncommon feat, he abolished some critical levies and taxes in the state, a move that left many Nigerians dumbfounded and in awe of the exemplary and courageous leadership style of the governor. The overwhelming feeling was that the governor came out to show the way in an unlikely manner, because in times such as this, governments look for more ways of taking from the people, but the Obiano administration instead, chose to sacrifice for the common man. If this is failure, then it is a positive failure which considers the people before any other thing.

“It is a well known fact that the Obiano administration has also set an impressive record in Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) with a remarkable increase from the N500m monthly that it inherited to N1.3bn per month. This was achieved through a timely deployment of cutting edge technology and a surgical weeding out of over 800 ghost workers from the state’s civil service.

Therefore this so called failure must mean something else. It must mean a governor that failed to satisfy the cravings of a few cabal, a governor that has failed to be intimidated to do the wrong things and mortgage the future of Anambra people and a governor that has stood up to ask questions where necessary for the benefit of the people.

  • ‘Allegations against Amaechi frivolous’

    ‘Allegations against Amaechi frivolous’

EX- aide to former Bayelsa State governor Mike Olomu, has said the allegations against Minister of Transportation and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi are frivolous.

The ex-aide to Timpreye Sylva said Justice John Okoro’s outburst against Amaechi was a case of corruption fighting back and trying to strangulate efforts of the Muhammadu Buhari administration to purge the Judiciary of bad elements.

Olomu spoke yesterday in Yenagoa, the state capital.

The former governor’s aide hailed Amaechi for exonerating himself from the allegations, including instituting a defamation suit against the Justice Okoro.

He noted that the allegations were inconsistent with realities on the ground and charges by the Department of State Services (DSS) against Justice Okoro.

Olomu said: “If former Governor Amaechi, as claimed by Justice Okoro, had visited him in his home and told him that the President sent him (Amaechi) to plead with the judge that they must win their election appeals in Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Abia states, why did he not file a report before the National Judicial Council (NJC) or report same to the chief justice of Nigeria (CJN)?

“It is clear that the fold of corrupt forces within and outside the Judiciary have decided and tutored the disgraced justice on what to say and how to embark on the clear attacks on the anti-corruption drive of President Buhari.

“We call on Justice Okoro to focus on the charges against him and stop throwing mud in order to truncate the prosecution and the coming jail term.

“We call on President Buhari not to be disturbed by the false allegation of Justice Okoro and his cohorts but to remain focused and resolute to ensure the anti-corruption drive of his administration remains on course.

“It is criminal that justice from the Judiciary has become the property of the highest bidder while ordinary Nigerians who are unable to pay end up in jail and their rights trampled upon.”

  • Police officers dismiss allegations against Idris

Senior police officers have dismissed as baseless, report by an online medium that the Acting Inspector General of Police  (IGP) Ibrahim Idris was involved in massive looting, illegal auctioning of 30 police vehicles and breach of public trust.

The Nation learnt that a video recording where some aggrieved retired assistant inspectors general of Police (AIGs) met to strategise on how to ‘bring the IGP down’ has been availed the President.

The online platform accused the IG of unlawfully selling off of 30 cars to fictitious claimants, embezzlement of public funds, frequent abandonment of his post, and sexual liaisons with subordinates preceding his time as commissioner in Kano State.

But the officers, who berated the ignorance of the online platform, insisted that no command officer has a hand in the auctioning of police vehicles.

To them, should the medium had done due diligence, it could have realised that auctioneers take care of such issues on behalf of the police, at the expiration of deadlines given to owners to claim their abandoned vehicles.

  • … as SAN’s trial over bribery allegations begins

… as SAN’s trial over bribery allegations begins

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) yesterday opened its case against a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, Dr Joseph Nwobike, before an Igbosere High Court in Lagos.

Nwobike is standing trial before Justice Raliat Adebiyi, on a five-count charge bordering on an attempt to pervert the course of justice and offering gratification to a public official.

He was arraigned on March 9 by the anti-graft agency on allegations that he gave the sums of N750,000 and N300,000 to Justice Yunusa of the Federal High Court.

The commission said the money was meant to influence the judge to pervert the course of justice.

He denied the charges and was granted bail on self recognition.

At the resumed hearing on yesterday, EFCC called two witnesses, one Joseph Oyekunle and Oliver Enwerem.

The witnesses were Compliance Officers with United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc and Access Bank Nigeria Plc respectively.

During examination-in-chief by the prosecutor, Mr Rotimi Oyedepo, Oyekunle said that on March 19, 2015, there was a debit of N750,000 from Nwobike’s account in favour of Justice Mohammed Yinusa.

Oyekunle added that on April 1, 2015, “debit transactions of N1.5 million in four places were made on the same day in Manager’s Cheques into other accounts.”

However, counsel to the accused, Mr Olawale Akoni (SAN), cross examined Oyekunle, during which the latter said that some bank documents revealed that the third and fourth transfers of N1.5 million were made to one Seni Ibiwoye.

He also admitted that he never operated the accused account and did not know the charge against him.

On his part, Enwerem testified that there were several transfers to different accounts by the defendant’s company.

Enwerem said that on Sept. 30, 2015, there was a N300,000 transfer from the accused’s company to another company, Awa Ajia Ltd.

The case was adjourned till May 12.

  • Caroline Danjuma spurns allegations against hubby

Caroline Danjuma spurns allegations against hubby

Embattled actress, Caroline Danjuma took to the social media to address a number of issues pertaining her marriage to super rich lawyer and entrepreneur, Musa Danjuma.

The mother of three who took a swipe at those sending photos and posts of her husband’s alleged extra-marital activities to her, said she has had enough of the pictures and name calling of the father of her kids.

“… So, enough of bashing the father of my kids. Enough of calling him names because you are opportuned to see him in odd places, enough of the pictures. Only God has the right to judge.”

Continuing her post, she stated that her children were her priority, and she was more interested in raising them properly than anything else. “My kids’ sanity is my priority and I will do whatever it takes to give them a good upbringing,” she said.

Decrying the attitude of people she calls ‘spies’, who are giving her unsolicited information about her husband’s movements and activities, the actress said she is able to manage her life and home without gossips.

“I am not a tree, I know when to move, and till then stop being a spy. No one needs it. You don’t need to bring out pictures, and tag me. You don’t need to slide through my DM. I can handle my business myself, thank you,” she quipped.

Although Mr. Danjuma has been called a serial cheat in certain quarters, Caroline has faithfully stood up for her husband, saying that although he is not perfect, he is a good provider, who had been there for her and their kids, adding that she felt blessed to have him. “I see beyond what you all see. I see a man who takes good care of our kids. A man who has supported me financially. Yes, he might not be the best husband, but I appreciate him in every way.”

  • ‘Allegations on Abiola Airport ill-informed’

•Osun PDP calls for probe of project

The consultant to the Osun State government on the M.K.O. Abiola International Airport at Ido Osun, Mr Wemimo Adebajo, has said the allegation of inflating the cost of the project is ill-informed.

The expert, who addressed reporters during an inspection of facilities at the airport, was reacting to a statement credited to the state’s chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that the cost of the project had been inflated by Rauf Aregbesola administration from N4.5 billion to N15.5 billion.

He said the claim was far from the truth.

Adebajo said the airport would rank among those with the longest runways in Nigeria, adding that the current site of the project was the first place where aviation activities took place in West Africa.

According to him, with the level of work at the airport, the state government had spent N2.7 billion from the revised N11 billion.

Adebajo said the project had reached 25 per cent.

The consultant said the West African Frontier Force (WAFF) was conveyed from the Ido-Osun Aerodrome during the World War II, adding: “For this reason, the state government wants to make the airport the best in Nigeria, if not in Africa.”

He said the tour was to ensure that reporters were adequately informed about the work done to situate the criticisms of the opposition in proper context.

Adebajo said the airport’s runway, which would soon be laid with 500 millimetre (mm) asphalt, is 3.5 kilometre long with 12.3 metres excavation.

The expert said it would be re-filled with laterite.

He added that both sides of the runway are equipped with water pipes, which would be the first of its kind in Nigeria.

Adebajo noted that with such features, the airport would have been equipped with facilities that would make emergency fire fighting readily available near the runway, in case of any emergency landing or fire.
