    Court remands computer instructor in prison for alleged rape

    An Ikeja Magistrates Court yesterday ordered that a computer instructor, Cosmos Ugbaja, be remanded in Kirikiri Prison until he meets his bail.

    Magistrate Bola Osunsanmi made the order after Ugbaja pleaded not guilty to a one-count charge of rape.

    Ugbaja is accused of raping a 14-year-old girýl, a Junior Secondary School Three (JSS 3) pupil in Ikorodu.

    According to prosecuting police Inspector Samuel Imohsonwa, the suspect serially raped his victim between January and May.

    The one-count charge against him reads: “That you Cosmos Ugbaja, 43, between January and May, 2016 at 13, Banjo Oyesanya Street, Olainukan, Ishawo, Ikorodu did unlawfully had sexual intercourse with one (names withheld) aged 14 years and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 137 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2011”.

    Magistrate Osunsanmi granted Ugbaja N500,000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    The sureties must have means of livelihood, evidenceý of tax payment in the last three years and property in Lagos, all of which the magistrate said must be verified.

    She adjourned till August 1.

    Police sources said Ugbaja, who owns a computer centre in Ishawo was engaged by his victim’s school to train pupils in computer studies.

    It was learnt that he allegedly raped the victim when she came to make photocopies in his centre in January. He allegedly gave her N50 after the incident.

    The girl was allegedly raped again on June 1 following which she developed stomach pains and was taken to hospital where it was discovered that she had been abused severally.

    The victim’s mother reported the matter to the police.

    The suspect, it was said, confessed and offered to settle his victim’s medical bill of about N100,000 in instalment within 100 days.

    Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team (DSVRT) coordinator Mrs Lola Vivour-Adeniyi, who confirmed the report, advised young girls to always shout whenever they were being raped.

    She also advised victims to seek medical treatment at Mirabel Centre at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTHý) immediately after such incidents.

    The treatment, she said, is free.

     

  • Applicant arraigned for alleged rape of teenager

    AN Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court yesterday granted bail of N250,000 to a man who allegedly raped a teenager.

    The accused, Victor Ngare, 23, an unemployed man of Abule Egba area in Lagos State, is standing trial for rape.

    Prosecuting Sergeant Rafael Donny, told the court that the offence was committed on March 23 in Super Shopping Plaza, Megboro in Abule Egba area of the state.

    Donny said that the accused lured a 16-year-old girl to a shopping mall and raped her.

    The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Section 259 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    However, the accused pleaded not guilty to the offence.

    In his ruling, Chief Magistrate Tajudeen Elias, ordered the accused to produce two sureties in like sum.

    Elias adjourned mention of the case to August 1.

  • Pastor remanded for alleged rape of minor

    The ‘failure’ of a pastor, Ilesanmi Emmanuel of the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), to control his libido has landed him in trouble. An Ado-Ekiti Magistrate’s Court yesterday ordered him remanded in prison for allegedly raping a minor.

    He will be in the custody pending the advice of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

    Magistrate Adefunke Ajibade described the case as pathetic, especially as it involved a minor and a person that should be a father and shepherd of flocks.

    Prosecutor Curtis Enabulele, according to news Agency of Nigeria (NAN), told the court that the accused committed the offence on July 12 at Ikere, an Ekiti State community.

    He alleged that Emmanuel’s unlawful affair with the girl, a member of his church, resulted in pregnancy, adding that the offence contravened Section 23(d) of the Child Rights Law of Ekiti State, 2007.

    He said the duplicate case file had been forwarded to the DPP, Ministry of Justice, for advice.

    Counsel to the accused, Mr Oluwaseyi Adeniyi, urged the court to grant his client bail, assuring that he would not jump bail, but counsel to International Federation of Female lawyers (FIDA), Ekiti State chapter, Mrs Foluke Dada, opposed the application.

    Dada said that the bail, if granted, would be a threat to other children in the church and the society at large.

    She told the court that the accused had threatened that the victim would die within seven days if she confessed to anyone that he raped her.

    The Magistrate adjourned the case till April 4, for further hearing.

     

  • EKSU expels five students for alleged rape

    The Ekiti State University (EKSU), Ado-Ekiti, has expelled five students for alleged rape.

    The students, who were arrested on Thursday through the joint effort of the institution’s security men, the police and youths in Iworoko-Ekiti, have been charged to court.

    They are Babalola Adedotun Kolawole, a 300-Level Psychology student with matriculation number 092819; Omoteye Olalekan Olamide (300-Level Psychology with number 0902886); Bamigboye Biola Moshood, a pre-degree Social Science student and Adekunle Lateef Omogbemileke, (300-Level Accounting with number 0902865).

    Adekunle Lateef Omogbemileke and Okube Gabriel Ogunmoroti are at large.

    Sources said they were expelled based on the report of the Institution’s Disciplinary Committee, chaired by Prof. W. O. Adebayo.

    A statement from the office of the Institution’s Deputy Registrar, Information and Public Relations, Mr. Ajibade Olubunmi, quoted the Dean of Students Affairs, Prof. I G. Adanlawo, warning parents to monitor their children/wards.

    Adanlawo said the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Oladipo Aina, was determined to rid the institution of bad eggs.
