  • Four remanded for alleged robbery

    Four youths charged with robbing a man of his valuables worth N177, 000 were yesterday remanded in Kirikiri Prisons by an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    Chukwuani Amechi, 19; Adigun Lateef, 20; Gbadamosi Shuaibu, 18; and Uko Saviour, 19, are being tried for alleged conspiracy, arming themselves with offensive weapons and robbery.

    Magistrate J. A. Adegun declined to take their plea, pending advice by Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

    The defendants and others at large committed the offence on March 3 at Itire, Lagos, Prosecuting Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Clifford Ogu told the court.

    He said the defendants armed themselves with weapons to rob Ismaila Saka of his belongings.

    “The defendants entered the shop of the complainant with cutlasses and bottles, commanding him to surrender his phones and cash, threatening to harm him.

    “They forcefully collected his four phones, valued at N139, 000 and N38, 000 cash totalling N177, 000 and ran away.

    “When the defendants were later arrested, they confessed that they have sold the phones,” the prosecutor said.

  • Court remands three for alleged robbery, kidnapping

    A Senior Magistrates’ Court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has ordered the remand in prison custody of three persons for alleged kidnap and armed robbery.

    The suspects are Sylvanus Beakor, 53, Godspower Kagbara, 27, and Promise Kpakor, 23.

    They were said to have allegedly kidnapped Chinyere Umerah in order to demand ransom from her family.

    The suspects and others at large also allegedly dispossessed their victim of her Lexus 330 sport utility vehicle with number plate AKD 398 DZ, N180,000 cash and other valuables while armed with AK 47 rifle, pump action rifle, a locally-made long gun and other weapons.

    They were alleged to have demanded N10million ransom from their victim’s family and refused to release her after they were paid N300,000.

    The suspects allegedly committed the offence on November 20 last year, about 6:30pm, at Okpaku camp, Onne in Eleme Local Government.

    She adjourned the case till March 28.

     

     

  • Two remanded for alleged robbery

    An Igbosere Magistrates’ Court yesterday remanded in prison  two men, Gideon Eze and John Akpan, who allegedly robbed a woman of her phones and cash worth N680, 705 at gunpoint.

    Magistrate F. F. George made the order following the arraignment of Eze, 35, and Akpan, 30, by the police on a three-count charge of conspiracy, armed robbery and possession of firearms.

    She directed that the case  be consolidated with that of  Emeka Iheanacho, 20, and Onyekachi Nwojo, 27, since they are similar and the files sent to Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice.

    Iheanacho and Nwojo were arraigned on December 27 last year.

    The magistrate adjourned till April 16 for the DPP’s advice.

    Prosecuting Sergeant Godwin Awase urged the court to remand Eze and Akpan  and consolidate the case  with its sister case.

    He alleged that the defendants committed the offence on December 5 last year at about 10am at Muritala Odofin Plaza, Agungu, Lekki, Lagos.

    Awase said: “The defendants, while armed with a locally made revolver pistol, forcibly dispossessed Ms Nosariere Igiehon of her three Iphones worth N600, 000, a handbag containing N80, 705 and other personal effects.

    “The locally made pistol in the possession of the defendants contained five rounds of live ammunition and one expended ammunition.”

    The defendants’ plea was not taken.

     

  • Court remands 28-year-old for alleged robbery

    A Chief Magistrates’ Court in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, has ordered the remand in prison custody of 28-year-old Joshua Okeke, for alleged robbery.

    Also remanded with him is Collins Chike, 33.

    The duo allegedly robbed M/s Abigail Duru and Anthony Ayuk, a worker with Sobaz Nigeria Ltd, of over N1million at gunpoint.

    The incident reportedly occurred on September 24, about 11pm, at Obiwali Road, Rumuigbo, Port Harcourt.

    They also allegedly robbed their victims of a Toyota Hilux registered as AAA 840 AJ, valued at N10million, property of Sobaz Nigeria Ltd.

    They were accused of dispossessing their victims of their phones valued at over N20,000.

    The suspects were charge with three-count charge of robbery.

    Prosecutor Inspector Wilson Isaiah said the offence breached Section 1(2) (a) (b) and 6 (b) of the Robbery and Fire Arms (Special Provision) Act Cap RII Laws of Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

    The charge was not read to them. The court declined jurisdiction on the offence, hence did not take plea.

    Magistrate Sokari Andrew Jaja ordered that the suspects be remanded in prison custody.

    He ordered that the case file be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice.

    The case was adjourned for report of DPP advice.

  • Five remanded for alleged robbery

    Justice Weli Chechey, of Rivers State High Court, has ordered that Isaac Ikechukwu, Ernest James, Bright Nwoke, and two others, be remanded for alleged robbery and murder attempt.

    Their sixth accomplice is deceased.

    The suspects attacked their victim, Mr. Clifford Paul, stole his car, phones, ATM cards and N200,000 cash, and shot him.

    The incident occurred about 6:30 pm on Gambia Street, Diobu, Port Harcourt, on January 23.

    They are yet to take their plea.

    Prosecuting counsel from the Ministry of Justice Nathaniel Ukotijembaba sought the leave of court to amend the charge to reflect the offence.

    Ukotijembaba told the court the police charged them for stealing, instead of robbery and attempted murder .

    He asked the court for an adjournment to enable them come up with a proper charge.

    Justice Chechey obliged him, and ordered that the suspects be remanded in prison till January, for hearing on the amended charge, bail application, plea and trial.

  • Welder remanded for alleged robbery

    An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court yesterday ordered the remand of Shedrack Okimiji, 24, in Kirikiri Prisons, Lagos, pending the receipt of advice from the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

    Okimiji, a welder, who lives at 13, Apolo Street., Makoko, Ebute Metta, Lagos, is being tried for conspiracy bordering on robbery before Magistrate A.A. Fashola.

    Fashola, who gave the ruling, directed that the case file be duplicated and a copy sent to the DPP for advice.

    Prosecutor Mike Unah had told the court that Okimiji committed the offences on August 15, at 23, Ajileye Street, Bariga, Lagos with others now at large.

    He said Okimiji with other accomplices trespassed into the house of  Mr Joseph Akeju, the complainant.

    They were alleged to have damaged his door and robbed him of four phones, jewellery, a plasma TV set and N110,000.

    Unah added that the complainant raised the alarm, which alerted guards.

    The guards were said to have apprehended the accused who had in his possession cutlasses and an iron cutter, while his accomplices escaped.

    The prosecutor said the offences contravened sections 299, 297 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    The accused’s plea was not taken.

    The magistrate adjourned the case till December 5.

     

  • Father, son remanded for alleged robbery, illegal arms possession

    An Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court yesterday remanded Chidi Christian, 22, and Okoye Christian, 44,ý in prison for alleged robbery and possession of firearm.

    The defendants, whose addresses were unknown, are facing a two-count charge of armed robbery and possession of firearm.

    The prosecutor, Inspector Johnson Okunade, told the court that the defendants committed the offence on September 18 in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.

    He accused Christian of going to Ekiti State University’s female hostel and robbed some students – Olaniyi Elizabeth, Olawunmi Olajumoke, Alagbe Oyinkansola and Oginni Oluwatoyin – of their money.

    Okunade also alleged that a firearm was found in the possession of Okoye Christianý.

    He said týhe offences contravene Section 1 (2) (a) and (b) and Section 3 of Robbery and Firearm Special Provision Act, 2004.

    The prosecutor urged the court to remand the defendants in prison pending legal advice from office of Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

    The plea of the defendants was not taken.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr Adesoji Adegboye, ordered the remand of the defendants pending the issuance of legal advice.

    He adjourned the matter till October 3 for mention.

  • Two in court for alleged robbery, cultism

    Two applicants, Friday Iro, 22 and Daniel Emezemu, 28, were at the weekend arraigned in an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, on charges on alleged robbery with a knife and belonging to a cult.

    Iro and Emezemu, who live in Oshodi, Lagos, are being tried for alleged conspiracy, belonging to unlawful society and robbery.

    The prosecutor, Clifford Ogu, had told the court that the offences were committed on March 28, at Ladipo Market, Mushin, Lagos.

    He alleged that the accused belonged to a secret society called “Arobanga confraternity”, which disturbed residents of Oshodi, Mushin and their environs.

    “The accused robbed Hammed Abdullah of his N13,000 at ‘knife-point,’ but they were later caught when they wanted to rob another person,” Ogu alleged.

    He said a call was put across to the police that angry youths wanted to burn suspected thieves and the police came to the scene.

    The offences contravene sections 40, 297 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos, 2015.

    Chief Magistrate J. A. Adegun granted bail to the accused at N200,000 each, with two sureties each.

    He adjourned the case till April 18 for mention.

  • Court remands man for alleged robbery

    An Iyaganku Senior Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, at the weekend remanded a 25-year old man, Olumide Olawale, at Agodi Prisons for alleged robbery.

    Senior Magistrate Adebukola Durowoju held that the court lacked jurisdiction to try the case.

    She ordered that the defendant be remanded in  prison, pending advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

    Mrs. Durowoju adjourned the case till April 23 for mention.

    News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Olawale, of Yemetu Alawada, Ibadan, was arraigned on a two-count charge of robbery.

    His plea was not taken.

    Police prosecutor Sunday Ojeleye told the court that Olawale and others at large allegedly conspired to commit the offence.

    He alleged that Olawale, on January 20, and others, armed with guns and knives, attacked Adetuberu Oluseye and dispossessed him of an I-phone 6, valued at N150,000.

    “Olawale also allegedly robbed Adetuberu of his Matrix car, registered as LSR 140 EM, valued at N2, 500, 000,’’ said the prosecutor.

    The offence was alleged to have been committed on January 20, about 7:50 pm at 2, Lafenwa Close, Idi-Ishin, Ibadan.

    Ojeleye said the offence contravened Section 1 (2) and 6 (B) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act, Cap RII, Vol.14, Laws of Nigeria, 2004.

    Police declare doctor wanted for alleged robbery

    The FCT P, who is at large, is said to be the proprietor of Vital Care Hospital in Kubwa, Abuja.

    He is alleged to be the leader of a robbery and car- snatching gang, which operates in Abuja.

    The police yesterday paraded five members of his gang at the FCT Police Command headquarters.

    They are Sunday Okhomode, Meshak James, Amusu Koku (a painter who specialises in changing the colours of stolen vehicles); Kunle Obajemi,(a printer who is an expert in changing chassis numbers on the dashboards) and Suleiman Isa, a goldsmith who buys stolen jewellery from the gang.

    The police said four pistols with eight rounds of live ammunition and a face mask, hidden in a bag in the office of the doctor, were recovered during execution of a search warrant in the suspect’s hospital.

    On how the gang operates, FCT Police Commissioner Sadiq Bello said: “I alerted the public last year to the activities of a robbery gang, whose modus operandi is to gain access to homes by blaring horns at the gates.

    “These criminals, who operate in the evening, come in heavily-tinted vehicles. When they get to the entrance of their victims, they will blare the horns, the gatemen will assume they are family members, or relations, or friends. They will open the gates. Then the hoodlums will rob the occupants of their cars and other valuables, especially jewellery.”

    He went on: “I am happy to tell you today that the FCT Command has bust one of the gangs responsible for such evil acts.

    “The gang is led by Dr. Ola Solomon Jimade, the proprietor of Vital Care Hospital in Kubwa, who is on the run. Five members of the gang have been arrested. They are cooperating with the police.

    “The arrest followed a reported case of robbery at a house in Maitama, Abuja last November when a BMW X6 vehicle, quantities of gold and other valuables worth millions of naira were stolen by the robbers.

    “Upon receipt of complaint, the command through the Specia1 Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) began discreet investigation, which led to the arrest of the suspects and recovery of the vehicle.

    “During investigation, five vehicles, whose colours have been changed, were recovered. Four of them have been identified by their owners, who were robbed at gunpoint.

    “If anybody knows the whereabouts of Dr. Jimade, said to be an indigene of Ife Olukotun community in Yagba East, Kogi State, he should report at the nearest police station.”

    The command also nabbed Destiny Abang, who hails from Boki East in Cross River State.

    He was arrested while trying to steal a car from where it was parked in Area 8, Garki, Abuja.

    The CP said: “During interrogation, the suspect confessed to have stolen cars in Garki and its environs. Most of the vehicles were taken to Boki in Cross River State where they were sold. Discreet investigation led to the recovery of the 13 stolen cars.”

    He said investigation was on to recover more vehicles and arrest other members of the gang.

    The police boss urged car owners to install anti-theft gadgets in their vehicles, to reduce thefts.
