  • Technician arraigned for alleged theft

    A 38-year-old technician, Idris Lawal, yesterday appeared at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for alleged theft of an elevator traction machine sheave worth N780,000.

    Lawal, who lives at 7, Oki Road, Iyana Ipaja, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing, to which he pleaded not guilty.

    Prosecuting Inspector Victor Eruada alleged that the defendant committed the offences with others at large on November 16, 2016, at 95/97, Town Planning Way, Ilupeju, Lagos.

    He alleged that Lawal stole an elevator traction machine sheave belonging to Mr. Onyeka Ndubueze, in contravention of sections 411 and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    Magistrate M.I. Dan-Oni granted the defendant N250, 000 bail with two sureties in the like sum, and adjourned the case till May 15.

     

  • Police arraign four for alleged theft of N30m jewellery

    Four men were yesterday arraigned at an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos for allegedly stealing gold jewellery worth N30 million

    The defendants, Friday Daniel, 20; Ojo Otiozuama, 20; Zubairu Saidu, 43; and Kabiru Isiaka, 30, residents of Yaba, Lagos are facing a five-count charge before Chief Magistrate Yewande Aje-Afunwa.

    Two of the defendants, Daniel and Otiozuama, are standing trial on charges of conspiracy, burglary and stealing, while Saidu and Isiaka are being charged for receiving stolen goods.

    Prosecuting Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Peter Nwangwu alleged that Daniel and Otiozuma, who are housekeepers to the complainant, Mrs. Vivian Ologbosere, conspired with others at large to burgle the complainant’s house.

    He said they committed the offences on December 22 last year, at 8pm, at 39, Aggrey Road, Yaba Staff Quarters, Lagos.

    The prosecutor said Daniel and Otiozuama later took the jewellery to Yaba market and sold it to Saidu and Isiaka, knowing fully well that the item was stolen.

    He said the accused were arrested by policemen at Yaba.

    The defendants pleaded not guilty.

    Chief Magistrate Aje-Afunwa granted them N3.5 million bail each with two sureties each in the like sum.

    She said the sureties must be employed in reputable companies, have properties in Lagos and provide evidence of tax payments to the Lagos State Government as part of the bail conditions.

    The case has been adjourned till May 9.

  • 21-year-old remanded for alleged theft

    A 21-year-old man, Chigozie Godswill Augustine, has been remanded in prison custody by a Chief Magistrates’ Court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, for alleged N12,500 theft.

    The accused was alleged to have robbed Izuchukwu Cletus of his pair of canvas, knicker and shirt all valued at N12,500 while armed with a gun and other weapons.

    He allegedly committed the offence at 112, Rumuola Road, Port Harcourt last November 27.

    Chigozie was arraigned on a two-count charge of robbery.

    He was not represented by any lawyer.

    The charge was not read to him because the court lacked jurisdiction to hear the matter, hence he did not take any plea.

    A document obtained from the court stated that the offence breached sections 6(b) and 1,2 (a) (b) of the Robbery and Firearm (special provisions) Act Cap RII, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.

    Magistrate Sokari Andrew-Jaja ordered that the accused be remanded in prison custody.

    He also ordered that his case file be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice and adjourned the matter till February 21.

  • Man in court for alleged theft

    A 24-year-old man, Martin Samson, who allegedly broke into a shop and stole items worth N172, 000, yesterday appeared at a Badagry Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State.

    He is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing, to which he pleaded not guilty.

    Prosecuting Inspector Ayodele Adeoshun alleged that the accused committed the offences last December 16 at 11pm, at Exodus Car Wash bus stop, along Badagry Expressway, Lagos.

    He alleged that the accused broke into the shop of the complainant, Mrs. Queen Wahab.

    “He stole one IPhone 5 valued at N83,000; two Nokia Touch phones valued at N11,000; one Android phone valued at N73,000 and N5,000 cash,” Adeoshun said.

    The offences contravene sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    Chief Magistrate Patrick Adekomaya granted the accused N200, 000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    He said one the sureties should be related to the accused.

    The case continues on January 29.

  • Mechanic in court for alleged theft

    A 27-year-old mechanic, Ibrahim Omotosho, yesterday appeared in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing a tricycle worth N750,000.

    Omotosho, who lives at Abattoir, Fagba, Lagos, is being tried for conspiracy and stealing.

    Prosecuting Inspector Raji Akeem had told the court that Omotosho and others at large stole the tricycle overnight, from where it was kept at Toyin Street, Ikeja, last December 23.

    He said the tricycle belonged to Mr. Emeka Onyenjo.

    Akeem said the tricycle was recovered through a tracker and the accused was arrested.

    Although the accused pleaded not guilty, Section 287 prescribes three years jail term for offender.

    Magistrate Mrs. Jadesola Adeyemi-Ajayi granted the accused N200,000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    The case continues on February 5.

  • Court remands teenager for alleged theft

    A Chief Magistrates’ Court in Sokoto, yesterday remanded a 19-year-old carpenter, Abdulmalik Abubakar, who allegedly stole 15 yards of Brocade valued at N105, 000 and N200, 000 cash.

    The police charged Abubakar with house trespass and theft.

    Chief Magistrate Nuraddeen Bello, who gave the order, adjourned the case till December 19 for further mention.

    Prosecutor Monday Kennedy had told the court that the case was reported at the Ungwuan Rogo Police Station, Sokoto by the complainant on Decemmber 6.

    Kennedy alleged that Abubakar broke into the house of Alhaji Bilyaminu Shehu at the Tudun Wada area of Sokoto and stole N200, 000 cash, 15 yards of brocade valued at N105, 000 and two phones.

    The prosecutor said the offence contravened sections 97, 349, 288 of the Penal Code.

    After the charges were read to him, the accused pleaded not guilty.

     

     

  • Man arraigned for alleged theft

    A 28-year-old man, Aina Gabriel, has been arraigned at an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ekiti State for alleged theft of engine and gear.

    Gabriel, whose address was not given, is facing a one-count charge of stealing.

    Prosecutor Johnson Okunade alleged that the accused and others at large committed the offence on August 16 about 2:30am in Ajilosun, Ado-Ekiti.

    He alleged that the accused and others at large stole a Sienna motor engine and gear valued at N500,000, belonging to Mr. Alabi Oluwafemi.

    Okunade said the offence contravened Section 390 (9) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.

    He urged the court to adjourn the case to enable him study the file and assemble his witnesses.

    The accused pleaded not guilty. His lawyer, Mr. Gbenga Bejide, urged the court to grant him bail, promising that he would not jump bail.

    Chief Magistrate Mr. Adesoji Adegboye granted the accused bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties and adjourned the case till November 30 for mention.

     

  • Court remands woman for alleged theft of baby

    A Karmo Grade I Area Court in Abuja yesterday ordered the remand of Theresa Obonna in prison for alleged theft of an eight-month-old baby.

    The judge, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq, gave the order after Obonna, of Jabi in Abuja, pleaded not guilty to a one-count charge of theft.

    He adjourned the case till May 3 for hearing.

    Prosecutor Zannah Dalhatu told the court that Godstime David, who lives in Akwa Ibom State, reported the matter at Life Camp Police Station, Abuja, on March 2.

    He said the complainant alleged that in January 2017, her lover impregnated her and asked her to abort it, but she refused and relocated to Abuja.

    The prosecutor said she stayed with the defendant and after giving birth, the defendant seized the baby and moved to an unknown destination.

    Dalhatu said during investigation, the baby was recovered from the defendant.

    The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 288 of the Penal Code.

    Man arraigned for alleged theft

    A 24-year-old man, Pakute Oseni, has been arraigned at an Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan, Oyo State, for allegedly stealing a vehicle, worth N4.5 million.

    News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Oseni, of no fixed address, was in court on a charge of conspiracy and stealing.

    The prosecutor, Folake Ewe, told the court that Oseni and others at large, allegedly conspired to steal the vehicle.

    She said Oseni was alleged to have stolen Lexus Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV), registered as AGL 553 DX, valued at N4.5 million.

    Ewe said: “The offences were committed on January 23, 2016, at 8 pm, at Alarere, on new Ife Road, Ibadan, where the car was parked.”

    She said the offences were contrary to Section 383 and punishable under Section 390 (9) (10A) of the Criminal Code Cap 38, Vol. II, Laws of Oyo State, 2,000.

    The defendants pleaded not guilty.

    Chief Magistrate Mrs. Jejelola Ogunbona granted the defendant bail at N100,000 with two sureties.

    She adjourned the case till January 31 for hearing.

     

     

     

  • Three in court for alleged theft

    Three men – Lawal Musa, Mubarak Isyaku and Ali Mohammed – yesterday appeared at a Minna Magistrate’s Court in Niger State for allegedly stealing three laptops and three phones.

    They are standing trial on a two-count charge of criminal conspiracy and robbery, punishable under sections 97 and 298 of the Penal Code Law.

    The prosecutor, Mr. Emmanuel Danladi, said the matter was reported at Bosso Police Division by Dako Dickson, a resident of Western Bye-pass, Minna, on June 20.

    He quoted the complainant as alleging that the accused invaded their compound on June 19, armed with cutlasses and axes, and robbed them of the items valued at N588,000.

    Danladi said during police investigation, the three men were arrested.

    “They confessed to have sold the items to Audu Mohammed, at N174,000,” he told the court.

    When the charges were read to the accused, they pleaded not guilty.

    The Magistrate, Fati Auna, however, declined to take their plea on the grounds that her court lacked jurisdiction to hear the matter.

    She ordered that the trio be remanded in prison custody and directed the police to forward the case file to the State Director of Public Prosecution, for legal advice.

    Auna adjourned the case till December 5 for further mention.
