  • Soldiers allegedly beat father of five to death in Ogun

A father of five, Kamoru Balogun, has died after he was allegedly beaten by soldiers following an altercation with a woman in Isara-Remo, Ogun State.

The incident occurred in Ikamoshe Street in the Isale Oja area of Isara, where the wife of the deceased, Yetunde, sells fried meat.

The deceased was said to be on a visit to his wife’s shop on October 24, 2015, when a female customer, Yemisi, touched the meat indiscriminately.

The late Balogun was said to have admonished the woman to desist from dipping her hands into the bowl of meat.

Balogun’s comment allegedly drew the ire of Yemisi, who rowed with him and threatened to deal with the deceased for insulting her.

The 40-year-old musical instrument engineer and disc jockey left the shop for a show not knowing that evil stalked him.

Yemisi was said to have invited some soldiers stationed at Ogere-Remo to protect petroleum pipelines from vandals.

It was learnt that the soldiers were led to the venue of a party where the late Balogun was engaged to entertain guests. They arrived in two trucks and battered Balogun on the orders of Yemisi until he bled from the mouth .

Our correspondent learnt that Balogun was rushed to Isara General Hospital where he died from injuries sustained during the brutality visited on him by the soldiers.

The incident was reported at Isara Police Division.

Recalling the incident, one of the relatives of the deceased, who is also the Lagusen of Ode Ule, Oba (Dr) Adedayo Olushina Adekoya said: ”The brutal killing of Balogun was reckless on the part of the soldiers involved. On the day of the incident, his wife left for the market and he decided to stay in her shop until she returned. A few minutes later, a female customer called Yemisi wanted to buy some fried meat and was touching the meat with her fingers. The late Balogun then warned her to stop dipping her hands into the meat and his comment infuriated the woman, which made her to threaten Balogun during an altercation.

“A few minutes later, Balogun left the shop to honour an engagement at a party in the community from where the female customer led soldiers to beat him up in public. The soldiers kicked, slapped and whipped him until he started bleeding from his mouth and collapsed on the floor. The soldiers left him for dead and hurriedly left the scene while bystanders rushed Balogun to Isara General Hospital, where he died a few minutes later.”

It was learnt that Yemisi has since gone into hiding.

Another relative of Balogun, Yeye Taye Ayodabo said: ”I was away in Ikorodu, Lagos, when I received the news of my brother’s death. I was told that a woman he reprimanded for messing up with his wife’s fried meat brought soldiers to beat him up and that he bled to death.”

It was learnt that some military police officers from the Army headquarters had visited the community on Friday, October 30, 2015, to investigate the matter, but nothing has been done about it to date.

It was gathered that palpable fear has since taken over Isara community because of the matter.

A resident simply identified as Olawale told The Nation that the residents are “now afraid to go out for fear of being harassed or humiliated following speculation that the soldiers might soon return to unleash further humiliation on those who condemned their indiscretions.”

“We want justice because Balogun was an easy going man and did not deserve to be hacked to death by the very people that should protect his life. The soldiers who killed Balogun must face the wrath of law to serve as a lesson to their ilk in the society.”

The aged parents of the deceased were too grieved to comment on the matter during the eight-day Fidau ceremony held on Sunday, November 1, 2015.

The deputy spokesman of Ogun State Police Command, Mr. Abimbola Oyeyemi, did not respond to inquiries by our correspondent at press time.

  • Family demands body of 11-yr-old girl whose guardian allegedly raped to death

Family demands body of 11-yr-old girl whose guardian allegedly raped to death

More than five months after an 11-year-old girl was allegedly raped to death, her remains are yet to be released to her family for burial. Anurika Nathan, an 11-year-old native of Owo-Ahia Afor, Obingwa Local Government Area, Abia State, was allegedly raped to death by her guardian, and her parents are worried that her corpse had not been released for burial long after autopsy was concluded on it.

The Nation had reported the death of Anurika, the last female child of Mr. Chinenye Nathan, a civil servant in Abia State, in the house of her guardian in whose house she was working as a house help before her untimely death. The man  had allegedly rushed Anurika to a private hospital in Umuahia after she went into coma, but the hospital referred her to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Umuahia for urgent attention. It was learnt, however, that the girl died before they could get to the medical centre and her body was deposited in the hospital’s morgue.

Sources in Owo-Ahia Afor said that Anurika’s family members were pained by the death of their daughter who had been sent to the ASOPADEC commissioner’s house to serve as a house help and also further her education. A family source told our correspondent that they were yet to be shown the result of the autopsy, adding: “We are sure that the man abused our daughter, because at the FMC, blood was rushing out from her private part. She also sustained injuries on her legs.

The source, who said the police were already investigating the matter, also accused the police of trying to sweep the matter under the carpet owing to the influence of the commissioner in the state. He was allegedly bragging that he had the wherewithal to influence police investigation against the poor economic status of the victim’s family.

The immediate past governor of the state, Chief Theodore Ahamefule Orji, had through the then Commissioner for Information, Anthony Agbazuere, addressed a press conference where he disclosed that the state had placed the errant official on interdiction because of the heinous nature of the allegation against him, pending the determination of his case by the police and the courts, adding that Sec

However, in response to a text message sent to his phone, the Abia State Commissioner of Police, Joshiak Habila, said that the matter had been transferred to the DPP (Director of Public Prosecution) for advice.

But the father of the late Anurika, Mr. Nathaniel, said he was at the hospital when his daughter died after bleeding for more than 30 minutes. According to the late Anurika’s father, blood was gushing out from his daughter’s genitals, mouth and nose, which he said was a proof that she was raped.

He lamented that all the efforts they had made to retrieve her body for burial had yielded no result because the hospital demanded N970, 000 as the medical fees they must pay before they would be allowed to take her corpse home for burial.

Nathaniel, who said he was no longer interested in prosecuting the case because of its financial involvement, however appealed to the Abia State governor, Dr. Okezie Victor Ikpeazu, to come to their aid by directing the management of the FMC to release his daughter’s corpse for burial or compel the man that raped her to offset the medical bill to enable him take his daughter’s corpse home, saying that he and other members of the family had handed the matter over to God.

A family source, who disclosed that the mother and other members of the late Anurika’s family were already traumatised by the development, stressed that keeping their daughter’s corpse continuously in the morgue would mean more emotional trauma for the family.

The source also appealed to Abia State Government, the management of FMC and public spirited individuals to assist the family in ensuring that the corpse of their daughter was released to them for burial.

  • Falana urges Fed Govt to recover trillions allegedly diverted by NNPC, others

Activist-lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) has urged the Federal Government to recover trillions of naira allegedly diverted by the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) and contractors.

He said a Panel of Inquiry on abandoned projects set up by President Goodluck Jonathan in 2010 reported that projects worth N8 trillion were abandoned by local and foreign contractors.

Falana, in a statement yesterday, alleged that with the connivance of top government officials, many of the contractors made away with mobilisation fees of over N2.5 trillion.

The abandoned projects include schools and hospital buildings, supply of water, construction and maintenance of roads, he said.

Regarding NNPC, the lawyer said following allegations of massive mismanagent of public funds by it, the government enaged an audit firm, KPMG Consulting Services, to probe the corporation.

Its report, Falana recalled, accused the NNPC of shortchanging the Federation Account to the tune of trillions of naira.

Besides, he said in 2011, the National Assembly appropriated N245 billion for fuel subsidy, but allegedly without any legislative approval, the Ministry of Finance and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) released N2.5 trillion to fund the fuel subsidy scam.

Falana urged President Jonathan to “pluck up the courage” to ensure that the “diverted” trillions are recovered forthwith.

According to him, having set up committees and engaged audit firms to probe the agencies of government, Jonathan is under a duty to implement their reports no matter whose ox is gored.

The senior advocate urged states and local governments which are entitled to 47 percent of the revenue accruable to the Federation Account to collaborate with the National Assembly and the anti-graft agencies to recover the looted wealth of the Nigerian people.

He added: “Since the NNPC has been indicted by KPMG, Auditor-General of the Federation, Special Petroleum Task Force, the National Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) and both chambers of the National Assembly, the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs Deziani Allison-Madueke should be sacked without any further delay.

“This will go a long way to convince Nigerians that there is no sacred cow in the fight against corruption.

“After all, the money allegedly stolen by all the ex-governors is not up to N1 trillion. Why should they be standing trial if civil servants who divert and convert trillions of naira payable to the Federation Account are allowed to go scotfree?

“If indicted fuel importers are being prosecuted, why should the NNPC which collected the bulk of the fuel subsidy fund through fraud be spared from prosecution?

“Since what is good for the goose is good for the gander all the NNPC board members and officials who were involved in the fraud of over N1 trillion fuel subsidy should be prosecuted without any further delay.”

Falana insisted that the report of the investigation conducted by the House of Representatives confirmed that the NNPC collected over 50 per cent of the fund.

Up till now, he said, no member of the NNPC board who took part “in the grand economic sabotage” has been brought to book.

Besides, he said neither the Minister of Finance nor CBN governor has been sanctioned for allegedly releasing over N2 trillion to fuel importers in 2011 without appropriation.

Falana added: “The Petroleum Revenue Special Task Force set up by the Federal Government after the January 2012 protests, indicted the NNPC for diverting trillions of naira payable to the Federation Account.

“A number of oil companies were also slammed for withholding billions of dollars which ought to have been paid to the coffers of the Federal Government.

“In a bid to cover up the fraud perpetrated by the NNPC, abortive efforts were made by the Federal Government to discredit the findings and recommendations of the Task Force. The Jonathan Administration was reported last week to have jettisoned the Report of the Task Force.

“In 2010, the NEITI, a statutory agency of the Federal Government disclosed that some oil companies had failed to remit $8.9 billion to the Federation Account. For some inexplicable reasons the Federal Government has refused to recover the stolen funds from indicted oil companies.

“A fortnight ago, the NEITI released another report which indicted the NNPC for withholding N1.9 trillion from the Federation Account. Apart from the general denial of the serious allegation of fraud contained in the audit report the NNPC has failed to controvert the findings and conclusions of the NEITI.

“In a recent report submitted to the National assembly by the Auditor-General of the Federation, it was revealed that a number of MDAs collected N4.5 trillion from 2009 to 2012 which they failed to pay to the Federation Account.

“In the course of debating the report the House of Representatives has discovered that the actual amount diverted by the MDAs is not less than N8 trillion within a period of three years.”

  • Clattenburg ABUSE Saga: Ref allegedly called Mikel ‘monkey’

Clattenburg ABUSE Saga: Ref allegedly called Mikel ‘monkey’

TWO Chelsea players say they heard race-row referee Mark Clattenburg call Blues’ star John Obi Mikel a “monkey”.

It is understood the pair made the claim to teammates in the dressing room after Sunday’s explosive clash with Manchester United.

Clattenburg vehemently denies making any racist jibe and is confident he will be cleared by match officials, who heard his every word through a microphone headset.

A source said Tuesday night: “He said nothing of the sort — and he will fight this all the way.”

Clattenburg, 37, is also accused of calling Chelsea midfielder Juan Mata a “Spanish t***” during the West London side’s 3-2 defeat. The referee denies making racist comments — and believes his innocence will be proved by the linesmen and fourth match official.

They will have heard every word he spoke during the game through the headset all referees wear. A source said: “There’s always a lot of noise on the pitch and the players could easily have misheard.”

Clattenburg now faces a police investigation as well as FA inquiry. He has the full backing of fellow referees amid claims that bitter Chelsea stars “ganged up” on him.

TV viewers saw an angry protest by Chelsea players after Clattenburg sent off defender Branislav Ivanovic and striker Fernando Torres.

An inquiry was launched into the racism claims by the FA after Chelsea lodged an official complaint. Clattenburg will not be officiating at a match this weekend.

The FA had hoped to bring the row to a swift end after the John Terry racism row dragged on. But the scene was set for another lengthy wrangle Tuesday after the Metropolitan Police announced it was also launching an inquiry.

They decided to act after the Society of Black Lawyers made an official complaint.
