  • Ezekwesili’s Red Card Movement dissociates self from endorsement of Atiku

The Red Card Movement co-founded by a former presidential candidate of Allied Congress Party of Nigeria, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, has dissociated itself from the endorsement of the Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar in the forthcoming presidential elections.

In a statement on Sunday in Abuja by the Co-convener RCM, Michael Ogundana, the group described the purported endorsement of the PDP presidential candidate as a “blatant lie.”

The group said it will maintain the principle of its co-conveners which is to mobilize Nigerians to resoundingly reject the decadent and discredited politics of APC and PDP and the attendant bad governance they have foisted on Nigeria.

The statement reads: “Our attention has been drawn to a press conference called by certain former members of the Red Card Movement. These group of individuals made several wild statements purportedly on behalf of the Movement to the effect that the Red Card Movement has dissociated itself from the Convener – Obiageli “Oby” Ezekwesili and decided to endorse the candidature of Atiku Abubakar of the PDP for the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in 2019 elections. That is a blatant lie! Nothing could be farther from the truth.

“The Red Card Movement currently led by its eight out of the previous 10 Co-Conveners wishes to state unequivocally that it has not endorsed and can never endorse any one of the two old order dominant parties of APC and PDP against which it mobilised citizens over a one-year period since being convened January 2018. The political jobbers who are brazenly propagating falsehoods as part of their ignoble venture of seeking to sell out the movement to Atiku Abubakar and the PDP.

“The Red Card Movement maintains the principle of its co-conveners which is to mobilize the Nigerian citizens to resoundingly reject the decadent and discredited politics of APC and PDP and the attendant bad governance they have foisted on Nigeria. Our Movement perceives Atiku Abubakar of the PDP and Muhammadu Buhari of the APC as icons of Bad Politics, Bad Leadership and Governance Failure. They both belong among the failed old order political class that we seek to replace with a new Political Order for Nigeria to make meaningful progress.

“Members of the public may recall that the Movement had earlier in 2018, embarked on an exercise to produce a credible candidate from a coalition of alternative political parties to upturn the reign of the dominant twin parties. The process involved multiple stage polling on social media by informed and enlightened Nigerians using the 3Cs – character, competence and capacity criteria for leadership selection adopted by the movement.

“Unfortunately, this process stalled at the second phase, where top candidates that emerged from the various selection mechanisms were required to engage among themselves to identify their consensus person. The RCM is now left with little time to conclude the exercise which now has to be closed. We hereby advise our members and the larger electorate to vote for candidates of their choice using our 3Cs for evaluation and preference.

“The Red Card Movement remains proud of the commitment and efforts of its Conveners to liberate Nigeria from the dark clutches of bad governance that APC and PDP have locked Nigeria into. We are delighted to welcome our co-conveners who have returned to the movement by exercising their right to automatic re-entry. We wish to reassure our members and Nigerians that we remain committed to our vision and mission that we have been known for and will continue the work of enthroning good governance beyond the forthcoming elections.”

  • Ezekwesili’s planned coalition won’t fly, says DG VON

The Director-General (DG), Voice of Nigeria (VON), Osita Okechukwu on Thursday described the withdrawal Oby Ezekwesili of the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (ACPN) from the presidential race as expected.

He said Ezekwesili’s planned collation to dislodge the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the People’s Democracy Party (PDP) will fail.

Okechukwu said the former Minister of Education belongs to a: “missionary political party that is not aiming to win power now. That is the truth of the matter.”

The VON boss, in a telephone conversation with our correspondent in Abuja, said her withdrawal from the race is a clear indication that she does not understand the dynamics of Nigerian politics.

His words: “What Oby Ezekwesili doesn’t know is that in democracy like this. The successful ones are multiparty system with two dominant political parties.

“And that is two party system. Her political party is regarded as missionary party. This is what the missionary parties do.

“She did not do anything different from a missionary party. I do not know the coalition that she is going to build that will dislodge the All Progressives Congress (APC) or the Peoples Democracy Party (PDP).

“It is not possible. If you go to Britain, it is a multiparty system with two dominant political parties.

“In the United States of American (USA), it is a multiparty system with two dominant political party. Go to Pakistan, it is the same thing. Brazil, India, they are all the same.

“If she had said that, she is going to build a coalition with the PDP, I would have said that she is trying to win political power.

“But since she singled out the two dominate political parties, then she is still taking missionary. She is missionary more than political.”

He went on: “She did not do anything that is strange. But I congratulate her for her stand on making the society better. And that is what President Muhammadu Buhari is saying.

“He is investing on food production, adequate electricity supply, modern transportation, construction of federal roads.

“What all the missionary parties are saying is what President Muhammadu Buhari is doing.”

  • Update: INEC rejects Ezekwesili’s withdrawal

The Independent National Electoral Commission ( INEC ) has rejected the purported withdrawal of presidential candidate of the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (ACPN) Dr Oby Ezekwesili.

The commission noted Ezekwesili’s withdrawal was outside the window of opportunity granted to political parties contesting in the 16th February 2019 presidential poll.

72 candidates were listed for the election, which is just 21 days away.

The commission stated her withdrawal contravenes the Electoral Act 2010 as amended, which stipulated that a candidate can only withdraw from election 45 days to the poll.

Ezekwesili declared her presidential ambition last October.

Responding to the development, the Chief Press Secretary to the Chairman of INEC, Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi said her decision was also outside the commission’s timetable and schedule of activities for the forthcoming polls.

He stated: “It is impossible for any presidential candidate to withdraw from the race now.

“According to the Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2019 General Elections, the last day for withdrawal by candidates or replacement of withdrawn candidates by political parties was 17th November, 2018 for Presidential and National Assembly Elections.

“Therefore, the deadline for Ezekwesili or any candidate in that category to withdraw or be replaced has passed.

  • ACPN endorses Buhari, accuses Ezekwesili of lobbying to be minister

The Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (ACPN) has disowned its erstwhile presidential candidate and former Minister of Education Dr Oby Ezekwesili, saying she merely wanted to use the party platform and ticket to lobby her way into a ministerial appointment in the next political dispensation.

The party also announced it was endorsing President Muhammadu Buhari as its candidate for the February 16 presidential election following the withdrawal of Ezekwesili from the race without consultation with leadership of the party.

Reacting to the decision of the former Minister to drop out of the presidential race, National Chairman of the party who also doubled as its vice presidential candidate, Alhaji Ganiyu Galadima asked Ezekwesili to render account of all monies she received while flying the party flag.

The party threatened to sue her if she refuses to return all the party material and donations she received within the little time she was in the party.

The former Minister announced her decision to withdraw from the presidential race early hours of Thursday to devote her time in building a coalition that would the defeat the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Galadima said the former Minister did not officially inform the party of her decision before making it public.

He added information available to the party indicate the former minister did not officially inform officials of her decision.

While announcing the decision of the party to support President Muhammadu Buhari’s re-election bid, Galadima accused Ezekwesili of not showing any seriousness in her campaign.

He said: “The reason for calling this press conference is to let the world know about the presidential aspiration of Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, which in actual fact is not the truth.

“I have been put into confidence by one of her aides named Iyinoluwa Aboyeji that she only wanted to use the platform of the ACPN to negotiate to be Nigeria’s finance minister.

“This is why she does not deem fit to inform the party whose mandate she is holding. If you observe, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, is the only presidential candidate who was so militant in her campaign without any tangible thing on ground to indicate any seriousness in the prosecution of her campaign.

“No campaign secretariat, billboard or great commitment on ground to indicate any seriousness.

“It is on this ground that the ACPN is withdrawing support for her presidential aspiration and endorsing the second term bid of President Muhammadu Buhari to take Nigeria to the next level. We may take her to court during her brief sojourn.

“She must return whatever money she collected from people on behalf of the party because whatever is given to her belongs to the party.

“Don’t forget that at the end of the day, as a party, we must render account to INEC, this is mandatory and it is in the electoral Act.

“We want to use this medium to tell her that we are not that was given to her not unaware of the various accounts that herself and her personal aide has opened to generate funds.

“We are aware that monies were coming to get in droves but we didn’t know the successes of this funds, she should please come and render account to us.

“She should please come and render account to us and to come and give back to the party all that belongs to it because, without the party, nobody will give her any fund or donate anything to her,”

  • Breaking: Ezekwesili withdraws from presidential race

The candidate of the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (ACPN) and a former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili has withdrawn from the Presidential race.

Ezekwesili said she would now be focusing on helping to build a Coalition for a viable alternative to the All Progressive Congress (APC) and People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2019 general elections.

She announced her withdrawal in a series of tweets on her official and verified twitter handles on Thursday morning.

She said, “Following the reactions of Nigerian citizens at home and abroad to the 2019 Presidential Debate held on Saturday 19 January 2019, and after extensive consultations with leaders from various walks of life across the country over the past few days, I have decided to step down from the presidential race and focus on helping to build a Coalition for a viable alternative to the #APCPDP in the 2019 general elections. This coalition for a viable alternative has now more than ever before become an urgent mission for and on behalf of the citizenry”.

“Over the past three months, I have been in private extended talks with other candidates to make a coalition possible that would allow Nigerians to exercise choice without feeling helplessly saddled with the #APCPDP. In doing so, I have not hesitated to offer my willingness to step down my candidacy in order to facilitate the emergence of a strong and viable alternative behind which Nigerians can line up in our collective search for a new beginning. My commitment in this regard has been consistent and in consonance with my agreement, at the request of candidates under Presidential Aspirants Coming Together (PACT) in 2018, to supervise their internal selection process as an outside observer passionate about building this alternative force”.

“Despite disagreements within the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria on these and other issues, I have decided that it is now necessary to show by action and example my determination on this issue by stepping down my candidacy and focusing on building the coalition once and for all”.

“We have no right to allow citizens give in to despair. We will #Fight4Naija together, and prove to all that the mess that has now become the political class will not be allowed to destroy our spirits and the nation. We are also determined to ensure that the message keeps resonating that our beloved country deserves better and that we will get the best that we deserve”.

“From last year, I have made it clear to the nation that Nigeria has always had a 20-year cycle of change – 1959, 1979, and 1999. 2019 begins another 20-year cycle, and together with all Nigerians of good will, I stand ready to play my part to ensure that we do not miss this opportunity to sing a new song. We have no more time to waste. Let’s get to work!”.

  • Nigeria needs to be rescued urgently, says Ezekwesili

THE presidential candidate of the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (ACPN), Dr. Obiageli Ezekwesili, has raised an alarm on the urgent need to rescue Nigeria from the current leadership.

She said this while participating in the presidential debate organised by the Nigeria Elections Debate Group and the Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria (BON) at the weekend.

Ezekwesili said Nigeria is suffering from leadership deficit coupled with incompetence and highly-spirited zeal to loot the nation.

She said: “Nigeria needs to be rescued urgently. What we see in our country is a massive failure of our leaders. Some 60 per cent of our women are poor. There is massive poverty. We have no business being the poverty capital of the world. We must disrupt the current political setup. As a technocrat in government, I served the Nigerian people. I have the competence and capacity to serve Nigerians.

“This is a historical moment. Nigerians, this is your moment. The citizens have a right to change the bad narratives about Nigeria. Nigeria needs a leader that truly cares and has the competence. We will mobilise ourselves for the urgent rescue.”

On corruption, Ezekwesili called for a structural change, saying, “As the President of the country, exemplary leadership is key, which will help reduce corruption. There will be structural change like deregulation of the petroleum sector to reduce corruption. Good behaviour will be rewarded, while bad behavior will be punished.”

Assuring youths of participation and inclusion in policy making, she said: “We have said it that 50 per cent of our cabinet will be made of young people. We will ensure that our youths are competitive globally.”

Expressing displeasure over the state of education and health in the country, the ACPN presidential candidate said, “Education is currently in a dysfunctional state; based on global factors, I cannot guarantee a particular budget on education. We will work to better the educational system.

“We will expand the National Health Insurance Scheme by ensuring that jobless people also have access to it. Primary health care, secondary health care and tertiary health care will operate on a value chain basis.

“We will fix the learning outcomes in our public schools, which is the quality of the teachers.  We will focus on a better remuneration for our teachers and improve the curriculum.

“Education has always been known as a pathway to human progress. Economic and social mobility is possible through education.  The early childhood education will be integrated. We will focus on technical and vocational education. We must modernise teaching and equip our teachers.

  • I’m the only one that can fix Nigeria, says Ezekwesili

Presidential candidate of Allied Congress Party of Nigeria ( ACPN ), Prof Obiageli Ezekwesili on Thursday said she is eminently qualified to lead Nigeria to the Promised Land.

She lamented Nigeria has over the years lack quality leadership that can take the country to where it ought to be in the comity of nations.

Addressing a group of artisans, youths, students, people with disabilities and some market women at popular Arewa House, Kaduna, the former Education Minister said she was the only candidate with the capacity and competency to deliver the country from its complex problems.

She said: “We have lacked quality leadership in Nigeria. It doesn’t matter that all those that have governed us are men. It doesn’t make any difference in quality of life of Nigerian persons.

“I am that candidate with competence and capacity to solve the complex problems that seem to have eluded us for so long.

“We cannot afford to have many more millions of Nigerians to join more than 87 million that are already poor.

“Therefore, anyone who is thinking of me being a woman has not come in term with other Nigerians I have interacted with in the course of our campaign. They have always saying Oby is the candidate we can trust.”

She added: “When you are tired of mediocrity, the only person you can think of is Oby Ezekwesili, who is offering herself to lead.

“The reason is simple. I have always been known in this society as one who has a strong voice for the fact that Nigeria can be better than it is now.

“Nigeria has no reason to be a failure and that is why I am running in this election.”

Asked if she was not happy with the current government because she was not given political appointment, she said: “I rejected to be a minister many times since I was a minister in this country. I don’t need to be a minister.

“What I need is that this society must be mobilised immediately to see how we can come out of the whole failure and incompetence they have thrown us into.

  • My administration will make education new oil, gold – Ezekwesili

Dr Obiageli Ezekwesili, the Presidential Candidate of the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (ACPN), says she will make education the new oil well and gold mine, if elected.

Ezekwesili made the pledge during her presidential campaign visit to Alhaji Mohammad Baba, the Hakimi of Ushafa, in Bwari Area Council, FCT, on Sunday.

According to her, education will fast-track the quest for all-round development of the country and open doors for various segments of the nation to fully develop.

She said the ACPN government under her would equally give priority to agriculture, security, youth and women empowerment to alleviate poverty in the country.

“I am running so that women, children and young people will prosper and achieve their goals.

“We will liberate Nigeria, rescue the youths and less privileged from sufferings and set the country on the path of prosperity.

“Education will become our new oil wells and gold mines through adequate policies,” she said.

The candidate, however, advised supporters of the party to form a united front to enable the party to attain victory during the general election.

Responding, the Hakimi of Ushafa, said Nigeria at the moment needed somebody like Ezekwesili to rescue it from its numerous challenges for better.

He noted that women were good managers and had solutions to the problems confronting the country. (NAN)

  • How I intend to reduce unemployment –Ezekwesili

The presidential candidate of the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (ACPN), Dr. Obiageli Ezekwesili, says she will drastically reduce unemployment in the country if she emerges president.

Ezekwesile gave the assurance in a statement issued by her Hope’19 Campaign Organisation on Thursday in Lagos.

Her assurance was in reaction to the data released by the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics (NBS)on Wednesday that the unemployment rate had risen from 18.8per cent in the third quarter of 2017 to 23.1 per cent to the corresponding period in 2018.

The ACPN presidential candidate promised that no fewer than 80 million Nigerians would be lifted out of poverty by her administration.

She said that her administration would implement productivity and competitiveness initiatives to create new opportunities and jobs in some key sectors.

She listed the sectors as agriculture, fisheries, livestock, and agribusiness which according to her, more than one-third of Nigeria’s active labour population is found.

“There will be jobs from light manufacturing industries, construction, housing and public works, renewable solutions, services including trade, telecoms and technology, domestic tourism, and creative industries.

“These industries not only hold the key to putting more Nigerians to work, but provides a much-needed boost to the nation’s productivity.

“Promoting and supporting these industries will occur through a mix of sound policies on trade, tax, infrastructure, skills, training, and research and development,” Ezekwesili added.

She also said priority would be placed on building a rapidly expanding economy, which would be powered by the private sector based on an economic structural change agenda.

“A majority of those operating in the economy are in the informal, low productivity sectors, while previous governments have focused largely on the formal sector in their poverty reduction and ease of doing business agenda.

“The informal sector, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is over 60 per cent of the Nigerian economy ($240bn).

“Unable to tackle the factors which lead to informality, such as low level of education, previous governments have chosen either to ignore the problem or militate against it.

“The informal sector also suffers low productivity due to high business costs which outstrip earnings.

“These barriers on them mean that those that work the hardest in our economies fail to earn a decent living.

“Investments in the formal sector over the last couple of years, while significant, have not yielded the kind of growth rates achieved by the informal sector.

“This sector grew at an annual average rate of about 8.5 per cent between 2015 and 2017, in comparison with the formal economy which grew by 0.8 per cent in 2017.

“However, increased informality, if unchecked, could lead to higher rates of poverty and inequality.

“We will move to embed the productivity and competitiveness agenda within initiatives that give incentive for the nation’s informal businesses and workers to, on their own, enter the regulator inequality.

“This enables adequate access to government support, accounting, tax reform necessitated by a larger number of registered workers, and the capitalisation of investments in domestic industries.

“In order to revitalise key aspects of the economy and implement dramatic reform, the government will pay significant attention to the informal sector, as the principal creator of employment and as a catalyst for growth and development,” she said.

According to Ezekwesili, Nigeria’s growth and productivity can only happen when the people have lots of jobs and when they earn incomes that pull them out of poverty.

The former Vice-President of the World Bank said “Right now, people simply do not have jobs. Under the present government, according to the Nigeria Bureau of Statistics (NBS) over 20 million Nigerians are unemployed.

“Again, think about that for a second. Those are not just numbers – they are humans; one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight million humans. They have families. They have people who depend on them.

“We all know someone who has lost a job in this economy. You may even be one of them. We all have families and friends who call us on the phone, pleading for any change we could spare at all to help them survive one more day.

“How long can we continue like this? The right candidate is Ezekwesili.” (NAN)

  • Ezekwesili upset at BON General Assembly

The Presidential candidate of Allied Congress Party of Nigeria(ACPN) Oby Ezekwesili, on Tuesday in Port Harcourt complained of harassment by  a participant at the opening of the 71st General Assembly of the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria (BON).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports the incident occurred while, Ezekwesili, a former Minister of Education and  Solid Minerals was presenting, a keynote address on the theme, “Broadcasting and the Changing Media Landscape”.

Ezekwesili expressed lashed back at the participant, Yusuf Musa, the General Manager of Nasarawa Radio and Television, who  interrupted  her while making her presentation.

NAN reports that before going into her  address, Ezekwesili, made off-the-cuff  comments on  the presentations earlier made by the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed and the Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission(NBC), Ishaq Modibbo-Kawu.

The Minister was represented at the event by Mr Sunday Baba, the Director of Public Relations and Protocol, in the Ministry.

Ezekwesili said: “My brother, Kawu, I listened to you with rapt attention, you are not speaking like yourself.

“You are threatening to shut down broadcasting stations. Similarly, the speech presented by the representative of the minister is also full of threat.

“This cannot happen in a democracy that we fought hard to attain.

“Patriotism is to support government when it deserves it and to support the people at all times.

“Anything that can be a hanging threat against the media must be rejected,”

At this point, Musa hectored at  the guest speaker, asking her to go straight to her paper rather than making comments and “embarrassing” the minister and NBC DG over their speeches.

Ezekwesili who was not pleased with the interjection by Musa said: “A gentleman is shouting at me there, that is typical of an overzealous person, telling a fellow Nigerian to shut up”

“Forget about our very animated government official who is defending the government.

“We know them, when the current administration is over, they will sing a new song”.

While the altercation continued, Ezekwesili, added, “You were not invited here to the podium, I am. Please let me go into my presentations”.

Musa said  after the programme that he interrupted Ezekwesili because she left the presentation she was asked to make to attack the DG, NBC and the Minister.

“She is someone I admire so much because of her contributions to national development but I am not pleased with the way she attacked the NBC over the plan to sanction erring stations”.

Earlier, Modibbo Kawu cautioned radio and TV stations that the NBC would not hesitate to sanction erring stations,  as the country enters the season of heightened political activities, en route the 2019 general elections.

“For us at the NBC, we cannot be responsible for the statements that politicians make.

“It is important to remind the broadcasting outfits in BON, that you would be liable for any violations of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code by the politicians that you broadcast live during political rallies.

“So it is your responsibility, not just to collect those huge sums politicians are willing to pay; but you must make them remember the liability you carry for decency in what comes out on radio and television.

Kawu also said that the NBC would not hesitate to shut down any station  who failed to pay its licensing fees  to the NBC.

He said many broadcasting organisations had refused to pay regularly.

“Many of you canvass the unacceptable argument about the economic situation in the country.

“But licence fees are statutory, and those who do not pay should not be on air! It is as simple as that!

“That is the iron logic of capitalist economics.

“I will like to remind all those who are owing the NBC these statutory licence fees, that we would visit you very soon, before you collect the huge sums from the political parties.

“You would either pay us or you would be shut down and so would be unable to collect money for political broadcasts!,” he said.

The minister on his part urged  the media to be agents of unity, stability and not to allow themselves  to be used as fake news purveyors during the campaign for 2019 general elections. (NAN)
