  • Ekiti poll: Groups root for Aluko

A socio-cultural group in Ekiti State, the Ekiti Solidarity Front (ESF), has commended the leadership of the Accord Party for adopting Surveyor Abiodun Aluko as the party flag bearer in the July 14 gubernatorial election in the state.

The Chairman of the group, Prince Yemi Adekunle, in a statement made available to journalists, expressed confidence in the ability of Aluko to lead Ekiti to a glorious era it deserves, considering the material and human resources of the state.

He said: “With Surveyor Aluko in the gubernatorial race, Ekiti as a state will witness rapid transformation in all fields. He possesses attributes that will bail the state out of challenges militating against its development.”

Adekunle said the people of Ekiti State would greatly benefit from Aluko’s humility, simple life, dependability, pragmatic approach to issues and accessibility.

He further said: “Our group, the Ekiti Solidarity Front, is out to give unflinching support to Surveyor Aluko. We shall work to make his ambition a reality. The work has started, and it will be a success.”

In a related development, the Mandate Protection Group (MPG), in a press release signed by Alagba Samson Ogunyemi, disclosed that the absence of Aluko earlier in the race actually didn’t go well with its teeming members, but his entrance has rekindled hope in the process.

The group said: “We want to commend Ekiti people for the recent adoption of Surveyor Abiodun Aluko by the Accord Party as its flag bearer for the July 14 election. His emergence has given more credibility to the process as he remains a trusted, humane and highly responsible politician. Our members all over the state have resolved to give their overwhelming support to this Ikere-born politician who has never been found wanting.”

  • Aluko, Oluleye deny withdrawing from race

All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirants in Ekiti State Senator Gbenga Aluko and Dr. Oluwole Oluleye have denied withdrawing from the race.

Aluko described the report that he had stepped down for a particular aspirant as “false and far from the truth.”

He said in a statement by his campaign organisation in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, that he will win the primary.

Aluko, who described himself as a “front runner in the race,” alleged that a certain aspirant was behind the false information.

According to the campaign group,  “Senator Gbenga Aluko was in the Senate 19 years ago as a principal officer and has no plan whatsoever of contesting as a Senator again.

“He is running a revolutionary campaign to become Governor of Ekiti State to liberate the people of the state on the platform of the APC, and he is a frontrunner in the contest.

“We implore the general public, especially APC delegates, in the May 5 primary election to ignore any information on social media, radio, TV, and any other form of mass communication against the person of Senator Aluko.”

Also, Oluleye denied withdrawing for former governor and APC Deputy National Chairman (South), Chief Segun Oni.

Oluleye said in a statement by the Director-General of his campaign organization, Chief Dele Olatuyi, he will pursue his ambition to the end.

Olatuyi said: “News going round on the social media that Dr Oluwole Oluleye, one of the aspirants that has already scaled through the governorship screening conducted by APC. has stepped down for Engineer Segun Oni.

“The news is not true, but a false and complete lie and product of the imagination of rumour mongers. Dr. Oluwole Oluleye is still in the governorship race of the APC in Ekiti State.”

  • Fayose’s ex-deputy Aluko joins race

Ex-Ekiti State Deputy Governor Abiodun Aluko yesterday formally declared intent to run for the governorship on the platform of Mega Party of Nigeria (MPN).

He was followed by supporters from the 16 local governments to the party’s state secretariat in Ajilosun, Ado-Ekiti, where he unveiled his ambition.

Aluko described MPN as a party that had the interest of the masses at heart, warning the people against “voting for a party that has failed to take care of the people.”

Aluko, a surveyor, promised to hit the ground running if elected, noting that Ekiti needed revival in all sectors.

He said he had the requisite experience to mount the saddle, having been a public servant for over 41 years.

According to him, he had the privilege of serving as the number two citizen.

Sympathising with civil servants, who are being owed, Aluko promised that an MPN government would pay salaries promptly.

He said his government would take care of youths.

Aluko said “a government that doesn’t take care of youths is preparing for another Boko Haram.”

He urged members to obtain their voter cards and exercise their civic responsibility by voting for MPN on July 14.

Aluko said: “We must ensure that we get our voter cards and vote out a government that is not sensitive to the plight of the masses. You must publicise Mega Party and ensure you vote for Mega Party on July 14.”

  • Aluko: I have apologised to Fayose

Aluko: I have apologised to Fayose

Erstwhile Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti State, Dr Tope Aluko, has said he had apologised to Governor Ayodele Fayose for all that he did in the past.

The former SSG pledged to remain committed and loyal to the governor and all he represents.

In a statement, titled: Why I Returned to My Political Home, Aluko said: “Fact is that there were series of misunderstanding between myself and my political leader and benefactor, Governor Fayose.

But by the grace of God, we have resolved all issues and I have apologised to him for whatever wrong steps that I took in the past. The governor took me back without consideration for the past. For this, I have vowed to remain committed and loyal to him and all that he represents.”

  • Buhari won’t impose candidate, says Aluko

Buhari won’t impose candidate, says Aluko

Ekiti State All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant Senator Gbenga Aluko has said President Muhammadu Buhari will not impose the party’s flag bearer for next year’s governorship election.

Aluko allayed the fear being expressed in some quarters, on the possible outbreak of post-primary election crisis over the increasing number of aspirants, who showed interest in the party’s ticket.

He said a credible primary election would be organised to elect the flag bearer.

Aluko, who spoke at a news conference in Ado Ekiti, reviewed his visits to 11 local government areas and 122 of 177 wards to canvass for votes ahead of the APC primary.

He explained that he possesses the experience and pedigree to make the difference and bring development to the state if elected the governor next year.

The former Senate Deputy Minority Whip said he was not depending on his perceived closeness to the President which dated back to 2003, when he served as Southwest Campaign Director for Buhari/Okadigbo Campaign Organization.

He said: “If I am waiting for President Buhari to impose me, I won’t be working hard like this. The President doesn’t believe in imposition.

“But I will work hard to get the ticket after which I will go to him as my political father and soul mate to seek his endorsement.”

On the large number of APC aspirants in Ekiti, he said: “The large number of aspirants doesn’t amount to division. The aspirants shall be sorted out by the delegates at the primary.

“Ondo APC started with 46 aspirants and 26 of them went into the primary and the party still went ahead and won.

“This confirmed that the large number is of no consequence provided that the process is free and transparent.”

  • UK Sport Minister Wants England FA to Hire Eniola Aluko

UK Sport Minister Wants England FA to Hire Eniola Aluko

If the Football Association hires Rniola Aluko she will be a great assest, said Tracey Crouch the Sport Minister.

The Football Association should accept England forward Eniola Aluko’s offer to help with its reforms, the sports minister added.

Manager Mark Sampson was found to have used discriminatory language to Aluko who hails from Nigeria and her team-mate Drew Spence following three inquiries.

The FA has since apologised though.

“Eni would be a great asset in helping drive cultural change,” said Crouch.

The minister also said the FA must fix its culture “from the top down”.

Crouch was speaking to the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport committee a month after Aluko appeared in front of the same panel to describe her experience of raising a bullying and discrimination complaint against Sampson.

Aluko, who has won 102 caps, lost her place in the team after making allegations of bullying in a 2016 FA cultural review.

In a BBC Sport interview last week, she said she was “open” to being part of the reform process at the FA.

Crouch said that the FA’s handling of the case had been “a mess” and “a sorry saga”.

However, when asked whether chairman Greg Clarke and chief executive Martin Glenn should leave the organisation, she said: “It’s not for the minister of state to say whether or not a chair or chief executive of a governing body should or should not be in place… because if I can fire them, I can hire them.

“We criticise countries like China and Russia for the closeness their governments have with their sports organisations and it’s not my job to say a chair or chief executive should or should not be fired.”

Sampson was sacked in September following evidence of “inappropriate and unacceptable” behaviour with female players in a previous role.

  • Aluko slams Olusola for ‘disloyalty’ claim

A former Ekiti State Deputy Governor Abiodun Aluko has faulted the claim of Deputy Governor Prof. Kolapo Olusola that he (Aluko) was not loyal to Governor Ayo Fayose during his tenure between 2003 and 2005.

In a statement yesterday in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, Aluko said his insistence that Ekiti residents must not be defrauded through the N1.4 billion poultry project during Fayose’s first tenure led to his exit from the government.

The former deputy governor was reacting to Olusola’s claim in an interview with Punch on Sunday (of September 17) that “all former deputy governors of Fayose during his first term, except the one that resigned, were unfaithful and disloyal to him”.

The three deputy governors, who served Fayose during his first term are: Aluko, Mr. Adebisi Omoyeni and Mrs. Biodun Olujimi.

Aluko was impeached, while Omoyeni resigned to take up an appointment as Wema Bank group managing director after about three months in office.

Mrs. Olujimi was impeached with Fayose on October 16, 2006.

Faulting Olusola’s allegation, Aluko said he was loyal and faithful to Fayose but maintained that he was “never a stooge or bootlicker”.

Putting the records straight, Aluko said his problems with Fayose began when the governor directed him, through a one-page memo, to release N1.4 billion to his friend, Gbenga James, for a poultry project, which had not been approved by the State Executive Council (Exco) or budgeted for.

  • DIEZANI WARNED ALUKO AGAINST BUYING $80M YACHT

DIEZANI WARNED ALUKO AGAINST BUYING $80M YACHT

Court documents filed by the US Department of Justice in Houston have revealed that former oil minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke, warned  her alleged business partners – Kola Aluko and Jide Omokore –against lavish spending, including splashing millions of dollars on a yacht.

“If you want to hire a yacht, you lease it for two weeks or whatever. You don’t go and sink funds into it at this time when Nigerian oil and gas sector is under all kinds of watch,” she said to Aluko in a recorded conversation.

But her warning was not heeded as Aluko went on to buy Galactica Star, a luxury yacht, for $80million.

The yacht, a stupendous luxury on water, was once rented by Jay Z and his wife, Beyonce, for close to a million dollars during a holiday last year. It also once hosted Beyonce’s 32nd birthday in 2013.

Both Aluko and Omokore are alleged to have paid bribes between 2011 and 2015 to Diezani who ensured that shell companies owned by the businessmen received billion-dollar contracts to sell Nigeria’s crude oil.

The oil swap contracts were a controversial barter arrangement which saw Nigeria use middlemen to sell crude oil in exchange for refined products. With local refineries under-performing, oil swap deals were used to shore up local demand for petroleum products.

Between 2010 and 2014, under Diezani’s watch, Nigeria was estimated to have channelled over 352 million barrels of oil worth a total of $35 billion into oil swap deals.

But with the contracts mostly opaque, Nigeria reportedly lost more than $900 million in crude oil swap deals between 2009 and 2012.

The deals came under severe scrutiny with former Central Bank Governor, now Emir Muhammadu Sanusi, describing them “not properly structured, monitored and audited.”

President Buhari cancelled the oil swap arrangement in November 2015, seven months after taking office.

The US Justice Department (DOJ) lawsuit has provided more insight into the scale of theft of Nigeria’s oil riches under Diezani Alison-Madueke’s watch.

The civil lawsuit, brought by DOJ’s Kleptocracy Asset Recovery Initiative, is seeking to recover $144 million in assets, including a $50 million luxury condo apartment in New York and the $80 million yacht.

Prosecutors say both assets were proceeds from bribes paid by the two Nigerian businessmen for lucrative oil contracts. The lawsuit seeks the forfeiture of both assets.

Prosecutors claim that the businessmen, Aluko and Omokore, laundered money through the US by purchasing lavish assets.

The $50 million New York condo is at One57, located opposite Carnegie Hall in midtown Manhattan. The building currently holds the record for the most-expensive residential sale in New York following a $100.5 million apartment purchase in 2014.

Aluko’s $50 million condo is the 8th most expensive in the building, but following a loan default, his mortgage lenders are set to auction the apartment on July 19.

The yacht and penthouse are not the only items under scrutiny by the DOJ.

The government also alleges that Aluko, Omokore and others funded a lavish lifestyle for Alison-Madueke.

According to the allegations, they conspired to purchase millions of dollars in real estate in and around London for Alison-Madueke and her family members, then renovated and furnished these homes with millions of dollars in furniture, artwork and other luxury items purchased at two Houston-area furniture stores at Alison-Madueke’s direction.

According to Financial Times, the two are accused of buying a total of four residential properties in and around London worth 11.45 million, and furnishing them with furniture, artwork and other luxury items.

“In one day in May 2012, Mr. Aluko was said to have wired $461,500 and $262,091 to two furniture stores in Houston from a Swiss bank account, on behalf of Mrs. Alison-Madueke, the civic complaint filed in the court claimed.

In return, the government alleges Alison-Madueke used her influence to direct a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation to award Strategic Alliance Agreements (SAAs) to two shell companies created by Aluko and Omokore: Atlantic Energy Drilling Concepts Nigeria Ltd. and Atlantic Energy Brass Development Ltd. (the Atlantic Companies).

Under the SAAs, the Atlantic Companies were required to finance the exploration and production operations of eight on-shore oil and gas blocks. In return for financing these operations, the companies expected to receive a portion of the oil and gas produced.

However, according to the complaint, the Atlantic Companies provided only a fraction of the agreed upon financing or, in some instances, failed entirely to provide it.

The companies also failed to meet other obligations under the SAAs, including the payment of $120 million entry fee.

Nevertheless, according to the allegations, the companies were permitted to lift and sell more than $1.5 billion worth of Nigerian crude oil.

The government contends the Atlantic Companies then used a series of shell companies and intermediaries to launder a portion of the total proceeds of these arrangements into and through the U.S.

  • Aluko hails PDP sack judgment

    Aluko hails PDP sack judgment

The whistleblower of the alleged fraud that trailed the 2014 governorship election in Ekiti State, Dr. Tope Aluko, has said the Federal High Court judgment on the leadership crisis in the state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has ended the alleged dictatorship of Governor Ayo Fayose in the party.
Aluko, who was the PDP Secretary until he fell out with Fayose, said the sacking of the Gboyega Oguntuase-led executive loyal to Fayose has given the party a new lease of life.
Speaking with reporters in Ado-Ekiti yesterday, Aluko said the judgment offers an opportunity to reposition the party and bring back chieftains and members who have been frustrated out of the party because of “Fayose’s reign of terror in the party.”
Aluko said: “This is the time for all our members who are sitting on the fence to join hands in rebuilding our party.
“The faction which came into being through illegality had been dissolved and all our party members can now have a sense of belonging.
“We can now take ownership of our party and run it in the most appropriate way as laid down by our founding fathers.”
