    •Senator: I didn’t belittle Asiwaju

The Action Group (AG) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State has berated Senator Gbenga Aluko for allegedly casting aspersions on the political relevance of the party’s National Leader and former Lagos State governor Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The group described Asiwaju Tinubu as the unshakable pillar of the party in the Southwest and across the country.

In a speech he made while pleading to be “assimilated” into APC in Ekiti State, Aluko, who represented Ekiti South between 1999 and 2003, said, among other things, that Asiwaju Tinubu was politically tired and was almost booted out of APC.

Reacting to Aluko’s statement, APC’s Action Group, through its spokesperson, Segun Dipe, noted that it was unfortunate that the senator, who wanted to be assimilated into the party, had a divisive mindset against its National Leader.

The statement said: “Imagine someone still begging to join our party from the dying Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) saying at our party secretariat, of all places, that those party members going to Osogbo and Bourdillion would soon regret doing so. That the man at Bourdillion was already tired and would soon be sent away from the party!

“Making such a disparaging statement as he did about the party he aspires to join and its National Leader is quite unfortunate, a misadventure, mischievous and a misnomer. We are not in PDP, where there is no respect for leaders and elders.”

APC’s Action Group said Aluko should remind himself that the recent achievement of Asiwaju Tinubu will forever remain fresh in the memory of every Nigerian and should not have warranted such disparagement from him or anyone else.

It said: “Aluko wants to come and eat from a cooked meal. Yet, without Asiwaju Tinubu putting all his political arsenals to use, there would not be an APC for him to contemplate being assimilated into today. We know Aluko’s antecedent of moonlighting and political prostitution. We know he loves to identify himself with other people’s successes.”

The statement said Asiwaju Tinubu was not just any other politician who could be equated to another politician in the PDP, where Aluko wanted to leave for the progressives.

The group said: “For him to have made such a disparaging statement regarding our National Leader, therefore, simply means he does not recognise our structure and cannot fit into our party.

“We are not surprised though that Aluko is making such divisive statements as we saw him doing. Or, is he not the same Aluko who was quoted at the Senate to have said that he was not a Yoruba senator and was not in support of any Yoruba agenda? Why then should we expect such a person to respect our culture and appreciate our values?”

APC’s Action Group reminded the senator of a Yoruba adage that says: ‘A child who boasted that he would have his lunch with the head of the pigeon on attaining maturity would be debarred from growing up by the same pigeon.’

“Now, we know why Aluko became a pariah in his PDP. He was once accused of name-dropping by his own blood brother and he was always making unguarded statements, throwing missiles from within. We don’t want such a person in our party.”

The group urged Aluko to publicly apologise to Asiwaju Tinubu, whether or not he would eventually joins the party.

Failure to do so, the group said, would make Aluko to incur the wrath of the party and jeopardise his future political ambition, which would keep him running from pillar to post.

The statement added: “Gbenga Aluko started with faulty steps and wobbly legs. He is a wingless bird with perfidious ambition. If he is this arrogant, when naked and running to our party, we wonder what would become of him when eventually he is well-clothed by us. Hence, his journey from PDP to APC has ended just as it began.”

But Aluko said he was shocked to have been misquoted.

The politician said he made what he called an honest remark on the resolution of the disagreements within the party in Ekiti State.

He insisted that he respected Asiwaju Tinubu well, adding that he would not say or do anything to disrespect him.

  • Aluko seeks nation’s rebirth

Nigerians have been urged to use the Yuletide period to pray for a rebirth of the nation’s socio-economic development.

In his Christmas message, Senator Gbenga Aluko, who represented Ekiti South between 1999 and 2003, said it is through the renewal of spirit and behavioural rebirth that Nigeria can chart a new course towards economic rebirth.

“Christmas is the period of the birth of Jesus Christ for the salvation of mankind. Let us use the spirit of the season to pray for the rebirth of Nigeria for national salvation.

“Let us use the period to pray for Nigeria for a renewal and birth of a new nation where we will all have peace of mind, develop a spirit to create happiness for our people and make sacrifices for its survival,” Aluko said.

  • Aluko, Omokore …Beyond Atlantic Energy

    Aluko, Omokore …Beyond Atlantic Energy

It is not clear whether or not Kola Aluko and Jide Omokore knew each other before they co-founded Atlantic Energy, the firm which the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC) says is owing the country about $2b. The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) is also pursuing it to get its tax returns for the years it operated.

Of the duo, Aluko is the more flamboyant. He keeps the company of Hollywood stars and had been pictured with super model Naomi Campbell, leading to a speculation that they were dating.

Aluko founded oil trading firm Fossil Resources in 2001, and subsequently became the CEO of Exoro Energy- an indigenous oil exploration and production firm. In 2007, the Exoro merged with Seven Energy and became Deputy CEO.

He is also believed to have a business tie with Vista Jet, a Swiss-based private jet charter company founded by Thomas Flohr.

His love for car racing is legendary. He has competed in major European races with the Swiss team Kessel racing.  In June 2012, he was reported to have purchased two luxury ultra-modern estates in Beverly Hills for $40 million.

In 2013, he was featured on Forbes’ list of ten new multi-millionaire in Africa. Also, Forbes reported that Aluko invested in Fable House, a startup production company founded by Oscar-winning actor Adrien Brody. Aluko, who was 44 at the time he made the $30 million investment towards development and production at the production house, runs the Kola Aluko Foundation, established in 2013 to “inspire, mentor and support future generations of African leaders”.

That same year, he held the Nigerian Centenary Photography Exhibition at Bonhams, the world-famous auctioneers in London to showcases what Bonhams describes as “an astonishing collection of photography documenting Nigeria’s rich and diverse cultural heritage”.

Aluko said of his foundation:  “The Kola Aluko Foundation is passionate about identifying and nurturing talented young African adults across all fields of endeavour to help them evolve into the new generation of leaders. In doing so, we hope that the young people we engage with will not only develop into leaders, but also become inspirational role models for others. This is the cycle of change we want to foster.”

He is also a major partner of Made in African Foundation run by a popular United Kingdom fashion designer Ozwald Boateng.

Unlike Aluko, Omokore, who hails from Isanlu,  Kogi State, is a politician. Aside Energy Atlantic, he is also linked to marine, haulage services, steel, dredging engineering and property development. He is said to have lived most of his early adult life in Egbe in Kogi State.

Like Aluko, Omokore also featured as one of “Ten Nigerian multi-millionaire you’ve never heard of”. Forbes described his company, Energy Resources Group as “one of Nigeria’s largest privately-held conglomerates. ERG has interests in oil trading and exploration, haulage services, steel, dredging engineering and property development.”

The report estimated to have exceeded “$400 million.” Omokore, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), he reportedly donated N50,000,000 to the Kogi State government to cushion the effect of the 2012 floods on victims.

Last year, he donated N25 million to assist the government in its bid to stem the rising rate of crimes in the state.

Venture Africa’s rich list of 2013 estimated Omokore’s wealth to be some $1.32 billion.

  • Aluko, Sokari arrive in Uyo

Enyimba offensive players  Mfon Udoh and Kingsley  Sokari are in Uyo for the game against Uganda.

As at 10:20 am on Tuesday, there were 10 players in camp including new invitees Moses Simon, Odion Ighalo and Akeem Latifu.

Central defenders Godfrey Oboabona and Kenneth Omeruo are in town as well as Ahmed Musa, Aaron Samuel and Chidiebere Eze.

English – based duo Sone Aluko of Hull City and Reading midfielder Hope Akpan also arrived in camp on Tuesday.

The Super Eagles squad had a feel of the Akwa Ibom International Stadium turf on Tuesday evening.

  • Bruce hopes to see best of Aluko

Bruce hopes to see best of Aluko

Hull manager Steve Bruce is hoping fans will soon be able to see the real Sone Aluko make his mark on the Barclays Premier League.

The Nigeria international was arguably the club’s best player in the first half of their 2012-13 promotion campaign before missing the rest of the season with an Achilles injury.

Last term was equally frustrating, with his Achilles this time ruling him out for almost four months from October.

But Bruce has never lost faith in a player he first worked with as a teenager at Birmingham, and has been desperate to see him back to form and fitness.

He was handed a chance from the bench against Everton on Tuesday night, courtesy of the knee injury that is likely to sideline Mohamed Diame until the new year, and his response suggested Bruce’s wish could be about to come true.

Aluko scored a fine leveller and excelled in support of Nikica Jelavic, who might have won it for Hull had his finish matched Aluko’s set-up.

“I was delighted for Sone,” said Bruce, who is likely to hand him only a second Premier League start of the season against West Brom today.

“When I first arrived a couple of years ago he was the outstanding player in the Championship. Unfortunately he damaged his Achilles so badly he missed all the rest of that season and even last year was stop-start.

“In my experience when you’ve had serious injuries and been out for a year it can take you as long again to be really, really back to being that comfortable. That especially goes if you play like Sone, who is all about twisting and turning and moving.

“But I’m delighted because he’s worked extremely hard and stuck at it. I pulled him aside before the Everton game and said he was very unlucky not to start because he did very well as a sub at Old Trafford, which is a good sign.

“I know he’s looking forward to the challenge of playing week-in, week-out in the Premier League because he’s been blighted by injury. Let’s just hope he has a bit of luck because he is a very talented player. He’s one you enjoy watching because he’s a bit different.”

  • Hull boss hails Aluko

    Hull boss hails Aluko

Hull City manager Steve Bruce has saluted Nigerian winger Sone Aluko after an impressive display in a 1-1 draw at Everton on Wednesday night.

Aluko came off the bench early in the second half and soon after left Sylvain Distin chasing shadows in the penalty area before finishing past Tim Howard.

The Nigeria international’s superb individual effort cancelled out Romelu Lukaku’s first-half goal, which had put a rampant Everton deservedly ahead.

While knocking the wind out of the hosts, Aluko’s effort spurred Hull on and they could even have grabbed a winner in the second half.

“It’s been a frustrating time for Sone, but now he’s 100 percent fit – which has always been the big issue,” said Steve Bruce.

“He had a horrible Achilles injury which left him out for a year.

“In my experience it takes another eight-10-12 months to get back playing, especially when you rely on twisting and turning like Sone.

“It’s good to see him reproduce the form from when, for me, he was easily the best player in the Championship when we got promoted.

“He’s been plagued by this injury but we hope he stays injury free because he looks like himself again which is good to see.”

Hull came into the game off the back of four consecutive defeats which had dropped them into the bottom three, but Bruce reveled in a much-improved display from the weekend’s meek 3-0 defeat at Manchester United.

“We needed a result and we needed to give everybody a lift because it’s been tough over the last month particularly,” he added.

“But the thing about this league I’ve learned is, it’s unforgiving and you can go four or five games without picking up anything.

“It was always going to be difficult, especially when we went behind but thankfully we’ve taken something form the game.”

  • I won’t leave Hull City in January-Aluko

    I won’t leave Hull City in January-Aluko

Midfiedler Sone  Aluko has said he will not leave Hull City in the January transfer window.

The Nigerian has been linked with a few top clubs in the English Premier League even though he signed a contract extension in the summer.

He scored a brace in Nigeria’s 2-2 draw with South Africa last Wednesday as the Super Eagles failed to qualify for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.

“I concentrate on the team that I play for and I don’t bother myself on media stories linking me with Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham,” Aluko told Goal. “ I’m with Hull and I’m happy playing for my team.”

The midfielder, who was not listed in his team’s 2-1 home defeat to visiting Tottenham on Sunday, looked back from when he was first introduced to the Nigerian U20 national team in 2009 by coach Samson Siasia and scored himself high as an improved attacker for both club and country now compared with that time.

“Between 2009 when I featured for the Samson Siasia-coached Flying Eagles in the Egypt 2009 U- 20 World Cup and now – 2014 is a long time and I have grown as a football player from then and also gathered experience since playing for Hull City and the Super Eagles,” he added.

“I have played alongside and trained with players that have a lot of experience while playing in the Championship and now in the Premiership in England.”

EMIRATES CLASH: Bruce to assess Aluko for fitness

Super Eagles ace Sam Aluko will be properly assessed for fitness ahead of Hull City’s away clash against Arsenal.  Hull City coach

Steve Bruce, who gave  the hint, said players returning to international duties will not be thrown into the Emirates clash unless the medical team confirms they are fit enough to play for 90 minutes.

Sone Aluko and teammate Mohamed Diame endured long flights to link up with Senegal and Nigeria respectively and Bruce hinted that the players would be left out if they show signs of fatigue as a result of jet lag and hard fought victory against their opponents in the AFCON qualifiers.

“We’ll have to look at Diame and Aluko because they only played on Wednesday night.

“No matter who you are, if you’re hanging around airports, going on long-haul flights, playing games – you’re going to be fatigued.

“It isn’t fair on the players. We’ve got four or five who have been flying through the time zones, so we’ll have a look at them and see how bright they are,” he said

While Aluko had a good ride as the Super Eagles achieved a 3-1 victory over Sudan, same cannot be said of teammate Mohamed Diame as the Teranga Lions were beaten 1-0 by Tunisia.  Aluko came in as a second half substitute in Nigeria’s tie against Sudan on Wednesday at the Abuja National Stadium.  The 3-1 victory did not, however, stop the Glass House from showing Keshi the exit door.

Bruce would be hoping to earn a point at the Emirates coming after his side’s 2-0 home victory over Crystal Palace.   The victory against Palace remains the side’s only victory in five premiership matches including a 4-2 defeat at home by Manchester United

  • Aluko targets first team start against Congo

Aluko targets first team start against Congo

•Ready to give 100% for Eagles

Hull City striker Sone Aluko  in this exclusive interview with SportingLife’s Taofeek Babalola at the Super Eagles Transcorp Hotels, Calabar, expressed his aspiration to start for the Super Eagles tomorrow’s  2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match against Congo at the UJ Esuene stadium. He also said choosing to represent Nigeria ahead of England was an easy decision. Excerpts:

SportingLife: It is nice seeing you in the Super Eagles again.

    Aluko: Thank You

This is you second invitation to the Super Eagles. What does it mean to you?

I am very happy; very proud to be here. It is an honour for me to represent Nigeria.

What should Nigerians expect from Aluko on Saturday against Congo?

I am here because of the match and to represent the country. I want to tell Nigerians that I am ready to give my 100% for the game on Saturday. To play with passion and try and score goals that will help the team get the victory. That is why I am here.

Why did you choose to play for Nigeria when you had an opportunity to represent England?

I played for England at the youth level but I’m always proud of Nigeria. When I was growing up the players I look up to in the Super Eagles were Austin Okocha, Nwankwo Kanu and when Nigeria came for me I couldn’t say no.

Would you have felt disappointed if you were not invited to the Super Eagles despite dumping England for Nigeria?

I won’t regret my decision to play for Nigerian even if I was not invited. It was a decision I took in good faith and I don’t think I have any reasons to regret it. It is my decision and it is my wish to represent Nigeria.

Do you think Nigeria have the team to defend the Africa Cup of Nation trophy?

Definitely we have the team. The coach Stephen Keshi has the experience of winning the AFCON trophy; some of the players have the experience of winning the AFCON trophy as well. I think we can achieve it with the caliber of players we have in the team.

Nigeria is playing two games in five days; Congo and South Africa . Do you think you guys can cope?

Yes we can, that is why we have a large squad here. We will play Congo on Saturday and travel to South Africa for the next game. It will be tough but we will cope that is why we are professionals. We have talented players in the squad, the only thing is to remain focused and win the game.

Some players like captain Vincent Enyeama will not be playing the match. Are you guys going to miss them?

We will always miss a top goalkeeper like him. He has been number one goalkeeper in the national team for a while. But I think the replacements we have will be okay and I know they will do the job well.

The Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) is rampant in West Africa and Nigeria has recorded cases of persons who died because of the dreaded virus. Did you at anytime have fear coming to Nigeria because of Ebola issues.

Not at all, as long that you are careful and you have all the information and you are not relating with anybody that is affected with Ebola. I think one is safe if you can keep to the health rules.

What is the relationship among the players like?

The relationship has been great. I have been used to some players since our youth days. The relationship among us has been good. We are all working for the same goal and we are doing it together to achieve result. We are moving towards the same direction.

Do you have any idea about your opponents, Congo?

The coach has done a lot about them. He has watched them played before. He knows how they play. As you know that the national team always change players and coaches so you cannot say you know everything about them. But I believe their style of play won’t be difficult for us and I believe at the end of the day we will be victorious.

Are you eager to be in the first team on Saturday?

It is the wish of every player to play in the first team. And every player will wish is to put on Nigeria shirt. I will like to start on Saturday against Congo if I am giving the opportunity.

    Best of Luck

    Thank you

  • Aluko’s goal saves Hull

    Aluko’s goal saves Hull

Nigerian striker, Sone Aluko became the saviour for his club, Hull City after he came in as a second half substitute in last night’s game against Trencin to score the winning goal that took the English side to the  Europa League play-offs.

Courtesy of Aluko’s back breaking goal, the last season’s FA Cup finalists scraped past AS Trencin 2-1 on aggregate at the KC Stadium.

Steve Bruce’s side were facing a humiliating early exit in their third qualifying round clash with the Slovakian side leading on away goals going into the closing stages having taken an early lead.

But substitute Aluko was on hand to volley home from close range in the 80th minute after Ahmed Elmohamady’s cross from the right had been headed back by Robert Snodgrass.

Elmohamady had brought the Tigers back on terms in the 27th minute as he climbed highest at the far post to head Robbie Brady’s left-wing cross beyond goalkeeper Milos Volesak.

The KC Stadium had been stunned with only two minutes on the clock when a swift counter-attack from the visitors ended with Tomas Malek sweeping Frantisek Kubik’s low cross beyond Allan McGregor.
