  • AMAA 2017: Lagos ready to welcome global filmmakers

    LAGOS State Government has disclosed its readiness to play a good host to local and international visitors coming for the 13th edition of the Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) today.

    The pan-African event which will hold at the Convention Centre of the Eko Hotel is expected to bring award nominees and professionals in the film industry from over 50 countries within and outside Africa.

    Permanent Secretary Ministry of Information and Strategy, Mr. Folarin Adeyemi, and his counterpart at the Ministry of Tourism and Culture Mr. Adewale Ashimi, during a briefing with the organising team, said Lagos as the commercial nerve centre of Nigeria and the entertainment hub of Africa is ready as the host state to make coming to Lagos an exciting experience for visitors.

    “As the centre of Excellence whatever Lagos is involved with must be done excellently and we have enough to showcase to the outside world in Lagos.  We will showcase the business opportunities and very conducive investment environment that government of Lagos is working hard to create. Visitors will see the transformation going on under the leadership of Governor Akinwumu Ambode. The Ministry of Tourism has marked out tourism sites and locations in Lagos that international guests will see. As a megacity, Lagos is being transformed by the visionary leadership of the Governor to be a home for business and leisure. We have a government that believes in entertainment and the creative industry as a viable contributor to the economy of the state. Lagos is ready to welcome AMAA nominees and guests,” he said.

    The organisers of the awards have announced Nollywood A-list Actress Nse Ikpe-Etim as the sole host of the night, a departure from the usual two people as hosts of events.

    Director of Administration, Mr. Tony Anih, said Nse has all it takes to host the show.

    “Nse is a vivacious actress and one of the best on the continent,” said Anih.

    “She is will bring her creativity and positive energy on board and we are sure she will do a good job.”

    In the same vein, Afro Juju star, Sir Shina Peters, Ugandan pop star, Ykee Banda, Paul Play Dairo and the Maestro Band will entertain guests and nominees during the show.

    •‘Vaya’ gets highest nominations

    After weeks of collating some of the best movies in Africa and the Diaspora, for the year in review, by organisers of the Africa Movie Academy Awards, AMAA, the jury, last Sunday, unveiled nominees for the 2017 edition of the awards at the Kigali Convention Centre, Rwanda.
    Leading with the highest nominations is South African flick, ‘Vaya’. The Akin Omotosho directed movie clinched 11 nominations; The Ousmane Sembene Award for Best Film in an African Language, Award for Achievement in Soundtrack, Award For Achievement In Sound, Award For Achievement In Cinematography, Award For Achievement In Editing, Award For Achievement In Screenplay, Award For Best Actor In A Supporting Role (Warren Matsimola), Award For Best Actress In A Supporting Role (Nmonde Mbusi), Award For Best Director (Akin Omotoso), Award For Best Actress In A Leading Role (Zimkhitha Nyoka) as well as the most coveted category, Award For Best Film.
    Flowing closely are Nigerian era flick, ‘’76’, and the biopic, ‘93 Days’.
    ‘‘76’ garnered eight nominations, including Award For Achievement In Production Design, Award For Achievement In Soundtrack, Lagos State Award For Best Nigerian Film, Award For Best Actor In A Supporting Role (Adonijah Owiriwa), Award For Best Actor In A Leading Role (Ramsey Noah), Award For Best Actress In A Leading Role (Rita Dominic), Award For Best Director (Izu Ojukwu) and Award For Best Film.
    ‘93 Days’ had seven nominations. They include, Award for Achievement in Soundtrack, Award for Achievement in Sound, Lagos State Award For Best Nigerian Film, Award For Best Actress In A Supporting Role (Somkele Idhalama), Award For Best Actress In A Leading Role (Bimbo Akintola), Award For Best Director, (Steve Gukas) as well as the Award For Best Film.
    Following closely is ‘Oloibiri’ with six nominations, and Ugandan film, ‘Queen of Katwe’ with five nominations.

    National Arts Theatre’ll be ready for AMAA 2017 — Lagos govt

    Lagos State governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Thursday said his administration has concluded plans to begin a total revamping of the National Arts Theatre in Iganmu, Lagos by next month to prepare for the 2017 Africa Movies Academic Awards (AMAA) ceremony holding in the state later in the year.

    The governor who spoke when he played host to officials of AMAA led by its president, Mrs. Peace Anyiam-Osigwe at the Lagos House, Ikeja, expressed optimism that the plan to upgrade the theatre to a world class standard would serve as a viable venue for the AMAA event when completed.

    “I want to also say that I am very particular about the venue of the AMAA.  So,  we would use everything possible to make sure that the National Arts Theatre is ready. We are in a process and before the month ends, we should have something to start with within the first week of April to getting the whole place ready,” he said.

    Alluding to the fact that Lagos would turn 50 by May 27, the governor said that the hosting of the AMAA event in Lagos would add more glamour to the celebration of the state’s Golden Jubilee and showcase its hospitality to the continent and the world at large.

    AS part of preparations for its 2017 edition, the Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) has opened its doors to film entries from across the continent and Diaspora.
    It will be the 13th outing for the prestigious award which debuted in 2005.
    Organisers say entries can come in for slots in feature, short, animation and documentary films, leading to prizes in 30 categories.
    “The deadline for all submissions is December 30, 2016; a late entry deadline is Janaury 13, 2017. Nominations will be announced in on April 15, 2017,” the organizsers announced in a statement on Wednesday, adding that only films produced and released between July 2015 and December 2016 may be entered for the awards.
    The 13th edition of the AMAAs has been slated for may 20, 2017 and will be televised globally. Now an established engagement platform for filmmakers, industry professionals, and all creative industry stakeholders, organisers say the primary aim of the scheme is to facilitate the development and showcase the social relevance of African film and cinema.
    Laurels are presented as honour and recognition of excellence to professionals in the film industry. This includes directors, actors, writers.
    Over the years, the award presentation has been attended by numerous international media representatives, Hollywood celebrities, African politicians, journalists, film industry professionals, and actors and actresses from across the world
    The 2016 African Movie Academy Awards took place on June 11, 2016, at the Obi Wali International Conference Centre in Port Hacourt, Rivers State. The exciting, sublime and glitzy event was hosted by Mike Ezuruonye and Kgopedi Lilokoe. The ceremony presented the best African actor of the year to Daniel K Daniel for his lead role in ‘Soldiers Story’ while Fulu Mugovhani won the best actress for her lead role in ‘Ayanda’.
    Other highlights of the 2016 AMAA Awards include “Missing God” (Nigeria) —winner of Best Film in African Language; “O-Town” (Nigeria) winning Best Original Soundtrack; “Tell Me Something Sweet” (South Africa) winning Best Screenplay; Nana Obiri-Yaboah and Maximilian Clausse “The Cursed One” being named Best Director; “The Fruitless Tree” (Niger) captured the Best Documentary and “Eye Of The Storm” (Burkina Faso) being selected as Best Film of the year. Joke Silva and Olu Jacobs were also presented with the Life Time Achievement Awards.
    Speaking further on the rules of entry, organizers say the  2017 entry form must be accompanied by all the supporting materials listed on the submission forms, including the synopsis of the film, the list of credits, marketing stills of the movie, filmographies of the directors and producers, copies of the movie in 3DVDS or a hard drive plus a compulsory online submission via Vimeo / we transfer and proof of the right to submit and indication of the year of copyright.
    According to the rules, AMAA will not accept any feature film that exceeds the 120-minute run or a short film that is longer than 40 minutes. The Academy awards two broad categories of short movies and animation as well as category for Best Africa Film in the Diaspora and Best Diaspora Short Film Awards, including for Caribbean shorts and features.
