Afrobeats needs to evolve, it’s stalled – Amaarae

Ghanaian-American singer Amaarae has argued Afrobeats has stalled due to artists being afraid to experiment with new sounds.

In a recent interview with Madame Joyce, she expressed that the genre’s financial success has led to stagnation, with many artists hesitant to push boundaries.

Amaarae cited Rema’s album “HEIS” as an example of Afrobeats’ evolution, praising its innovative sound and impact on the genre.

She said: “Afrobeats and African music need to evolve. It needs to evolve in a direction that is fearless, and I think right now artists have made so much money from a certain type of sound that they are afraid to step out of the boundaries because they are probably more focused on the financial aspect of it. And as a result, I think Afrobeats has stalled.

“One of my favourite albums last year was Rema’s ‘HEIS.’ That’s what I consider the evolution of Afrobeats. You see how it moved the genre and the culture forward, and you see how it moved his career forward.

“There have been a lot of people that have big hits that aren’t willing to push the boundaries of the music, and as a result, Afrobeats is in a bit of a rut. So, I think Africans need to get it together, get on up, and start to experiment. Music needs to evolve, and it needs to excite people again. Right now, Afrobeats is not in the exciting space like the way it was in 2019”.

Why Ghanaians eat lots of eggs – Amaarae

American-Ghanaian singer Amaarae has shed light on why Ghanaians frequently incorporate eggs into their meals.

According to her, the practice stems from traditional Ghanaian households where the father typically receives the largest share of meat, leaving children with limited portions.

To compensate for this, Amaarae in a recent interview with Madame Joyce, said the eggs are added to their meals as a supplementary source of protein.

Over time, eggs have become a staple in Ghanaian cuisine due to their affordability and nutritional value.

Amaarae explained that in the past, chicken was considered a luxury food, reserved for special occasions like Christmas.

As a result, eggs became a cheap and accessible way to add protein to meals.

He said: “There is a whole history to that [Ghanaian eating a lot of eggs]. So, the whole thing with eggs was like, back in the days, your father would get the most meat in the food.

“If your mum cooks stew or something else, all the meat would go to your dad. So, the kids get a small meat plus eggs to make up for their protein. That’s why egg has become like a stable in our country because it’s like a cheap add-on to get protein if meat is too expensive.

“Back then, chicken used to be a Christmas luxury. Now, it’s like normal. That’s how the egg thing is a thing because it’s a cheap supplement for protein. That’s why we eat a lot of eggs.”

This historical context has contributed to the widespread consumption of eggs in Ghana, with eggs often serving as a vital component of various dishes.
