JUST IN: Wike fires Amaechi for ‘I’m hungry’ comments

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike has fired back at former Rivers Governor Rotimi Amaechi over his “I’m hungry” comments.

Speaking on Monday during a media parley monitored by The Nation, Wike carpeted Amaechi, noting that the latter was only hungry for power.

Amaechi last week while commenting on the state of the economy during an event organised to mark his 60th birthday anniversary said he was hungry.

He said: “We’re all hungry, all of us are. If you’re not hungry, I’m. For us, the opposition, if you want us to remove the man in power, we can remove him from this power.

“In Nigeria, there are no capitalist ideas among the politicians; it’s about sharing.”

Amaechi served as two-term governor of Rivers state from 2007 to 2015 after which he was appointed as minister of transportation by ex-President Muhammadu Buhari. He was also the chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum from 2011 to 2015.

Before becoming governor, he was the speaker of the Rivers house of assembly between 1999 and 2007. He had also served as the pioneer chairman of Nigeria’s conference of speakers of state assemblies

Reacting, Wike said: “We’ve time to listen to junks in Nigeria. I don’t know why a man (Amaechi) will choose his 60th birthday to tell lies to Nigerians that you’re hungry.

“He was speaker in 1999-2007. He was a governor too from 2007 to 2015. He also became a minister from 2015-2023. He never spoke about hunger.

“Now they are regrouping, They are only hungry for power. It shows failure on his part. How do you trivialise issue of hunger? You joined Atiku and claimed your hungry. It is just that you cannot stay out of power. Since 1999-2023, and Amaechi will stand before Nigerians and claim hunger. He was a former governor. He couldn’t give Buhari common 25% during election. He was even DG of campaign then.

“Thank God we didn’t support PDP. He would have taken the glory. He’s in a coalition, I don’t like talking talking. Let them form as a team, let him start from home (Rivers).

“Let see how he can remove the president. Is it a military coup? The term removal is synonymous to dictatorship or military coup. You saw what happened and what Nigerians passed through in 2015, and you’re claiming now that Nigerians are hungry.

“I’m not a liability, I’m an asset. You may not like me. I’m an asset to ensuring that President Tinubu wins second term.”

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended heartfelt congratulations to Alhaji Ashafa Ajibola Erogbogbo on yesterday’s celebration of his 99th birthday.

The President also congratulated former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi who clocked 60 years on Tuesday.

In a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President said: “Alhaji Erogbogbo has led a life worthy of celebration. His story is one of steadfast dedication — to family, to work, and to his community. As he turns 99, I join family, friends, and well-wishers across the nation in celebrating a life well lived.”

Born in 1926, Alhaji Erogbogbo began his working life at the Government Printing Press in Lagos before joining the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS).

In 1954, he moved into the private sector, beginning what would become a storied career with Shell Company of Nigeria Limited.

It was in Shell’s aviation division that his diligence and leadership were most prominently felt.

Rising steadily through the ranks, Alhaji Erogbogbo held key positions across Northern Nigeria, serving as District Manager in Kano, Kaduna, and Katsina.

He later returned to Lagos, where he culminated his career as Aviation Superintendent at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport.

Among them is Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), who the President noted has upheld the values of public service, intellect, and purposeful leadership instilled by her father.

Also, President Tinubu has hailed Ogun State governor and Chairman of the Southern Governors’ Forum, Prince Dapo Abiodun, on his 65th birthday and the sixth anniversary of his administration.

In a statement yesterday in Abuja by Onanuga, President Tinubu congratulated Governor Abiodun for what he called his “model of progress” in governance over the past six years.

“Your unwavering commitment to public service and the advancement of our great nation remains a pillar of strength in our collective pursuit of national renewal and prosperity,” President Tinubu said, lauding Abiodun’s transparent and inclusive style of leadership.

Since assuming office in 2019, Governor Abiodun has overseen a wave of developmental projects in Ogun, positioning the state as one of Nigeria’s leading investment destinations.

In his birthday message to Amaechi, President Tinubu reflected on his achievements as a former Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly and two-term governor of Rivers State, as well as his eight years as Transportation Minister in the Muhammadu Buhari administration.

He particularly acknowledged Amaechi’s leadership role when he was the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), a position from which he coordinated intergovernmental relations and policy harmonisation across the 36 states.

During his tenure, Amaechi spearheaded major infrastructural projects, including the revival of Nigeria’s rail transport system and modernisation of key transport corridors.

President Tinubu prayed for long life, good health, and continued success for the former minister, expressing confidence in Amaechi’s enduring relevance in the nation’s political landscape.

Amaechi an asset to my government, says Buhari

Former President Muhammadu Buhari has lauded Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, the former governor of Rivers State and two-term minister of transportation, as an invaluable asset to his administration, describing him as a “golden fish” whose contributions to Nigeria’s infrastructure development will remain enduring.

In a congratulatory message issued on Wednesday marking Amaechi’s 60th birthday, Buhari praised his former cabinet member for his unwavering commitment to transforming Nigeria’s railway sector and bridging longstanding infrastructure gaps across the country.

“Amaechi shared with me the aspiration of strengthening infrastructure,” Buhari said in the statement issued by his spokesperson, Mallam Garba Shehu.

“He played a pivotal role in reviving the railway system from a comatose state, completing long-abandoned projects, and initiating major new ones, many of which reached completion before he left office”, he said.

Buhari highlighted Amaechi’s central role in ushering in what he described as a “new era of railway infrastructure,” crediting him for restoring life to a system that had been “killed and buried for decades.”

Under Amaechi’s stewardship, the railways, once the economic lifeblood of towns and cities, witnessed a resurgence that boosted passenger and freight services, introduced new rolling stock, and enhanced safety.

“The railway system began faithfully serving millions of Nigerians again, expanding capacity and meeting growing demand,” the former president noted.

Amaechi, who turned 60 on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, was widely regarded as one of the standout ministers in the Buhari administration, known for his ambitious drive to modernise Nigeria’s transport infrastructure.

His tenure saw the execution of major projects such as the Abuja-Kaduna rail line, the Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge, and the Itakpe-Warri corridor, among others.

“I wish him and his family many happy years ahead,” Buhari concluded.

    • Malami, Babachir pledge support

A group of Northern political elite may have thrown their weight behind a proposed national coalition movement to be led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

The Nation gathered that the decision was reached at a meeting by the politicians under the aegis of the  National Political Consultative Group (North-NPCG), in Abuja yesterday.

At the meeting, which was said to be non-partisan, were Atiku;  Datti Baba-Ahmed, Peter Obi; former  Justice Minister Abubakar Malami; and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF)  Babachir Lawal.

Erstwhile Minister of State for  Solid Minerals, Abu Bwari and former All Progressives Congress (APC) National Vice Chairman (North-West), Salihu Lukman, among other Northern political leaders were at the meeting that lasted over four hours.

Obi, former Rivers Governor  Rotimi Ameachi and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees Chairman   Adolphus Wabara were also at the meeting to show solidarity with the group.

The Nation learnt that former Interior Minister Rauf Aregbesola, who hosted Atiku in Ilesa at the weekend, joined the meeting virtually.

The attendees kept sealed lips when approached by reporters after the meeting. However,  it was gathered that the formation of a coalition to present a formidable candidate against  President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027 topped their talks.

A member of the group, who did not want his name in print, said they met to further consolidate North’s position ahead of the 2027 general election and to seek the support of like-minded individuals across the  “ South. ‘’

He said: “Today’s (yesterday) meeting was essentially to review the position of our (North) region ahead of the 2027 general election as regards the coalition movement.

‘’We extended invitations to like-minded  persons or  leaders from the Southern part of the country.”

He, however, assured that ‘’a formal statement on the outcome of the meeting will be made available tomorrow (today).

Obi to North: vote for competence in 2027

Obi, according to a statement by the Obi Media Outreach after the meeting, urged the North to vote for competence and capacity in 2027.

He was also said to have described the North as the ‘’future and huge asset’’ of the country.

According to the statement by Ibrahim Umar, the former LP presidential candidate, pointed out that crimes and insecurity in the North are caused by poverty.

He advised the region to invest more in education because it is the easiest way to tackle the menace.

Obi also noted that the North had for long voted for religion and tribe.

He called on the electorate in the region to begin to vote for ‘’competence and capacity.’’

The former governor also underscored the importance of trust among Nigerians to be able to tackle the myriad of problems facing the nation.

Drawing an inference from some successful agrarian nations like Bangladesh and the Netherlands, Obi said the North has more potential than they.

He stated that what was lacking in the North was good governance, good policies and implementation.

Former Justice Minister Malami was said to have bemoaned the security situation in the North and called for a platform to address the challenge.

Amaechi,  who ruled the state from 2007 to 2015 condemned the move by the President, saying it speaks to a power grab and marks a descent of the country into totalitarianism.

In a statement, he said that the move by Tinubu clearly violates the 1999 Constitution.

“With this singular move, Mr President has technically suspended and truncated democracy in Rivers State. This clearly violates our Constitution, the same Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria that Mr. President swore to uphold.’’

  • El-Rufai, Amaechi and the loose cannons of Nigeria’s politics

El-Rufai, Amaechi and the loose cannons of Nigeria’s politics

Nasir Ahmad el-Rufai and Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, two influential figures in Nigerian politics, have been making headlines with their bold comments and actions. Their unconventional approach has sparked debate about whether they’re reckless loose cannons or calculated strategists. As Nigeria navigates its intricate political landscape, El-Rufai, Amaechi, and other key players will undoubtedly influence the country’s future.

El-Rufai and Amaechi recent actions suggest opportunistic tendencies, raising important questions. With the government barely two years old, their intervention seems premature. Rather than a midterm review, their actions lack critical thinking and strategic analysis. As former governors and Federal Ministers, they are expected to offer a viable alternative solution and a roadmap to address Nigeria’s socioeconomic challenges.

It’s a paradox that El-Rufai and Amaechi personify the contradictions of the Nigerian state, a fact that speaks volumes about the country’s complexities. Take, for instance, as gentlemen of significant means, they can afford to engage research assistants, pay consultants, or even establish think tanks. That they have failed to do so is not only an injustice to the country but also diminishes their own standing. Even in the best of times – and we are clearly not in the best of times – critical thinking and in-depth analysis are essential for guiding and guarding any government. This is what seasoned players like the former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, former Presidents Barack Obama of the United States of America and Nelson Mandela of South Africa,, among others, in many countries of the world, are doing.

Sadly, the state of our political discourse today is reflected in the petulance of El-Rufai and Amaechi. They exemplify a diminished polity where vituperation and divisive rhetoric have supplanted thoughtful analysis and in-depth evaluation. This is certainly unhelpful in view of the ongoing trade wars unleashed by the actions of President Donald Trump. The world is now in very turbulent waters and Nigerians have to navigate the unfolding drama. Scenario planning has to be done on the effects of what is going on beyond our shores and the Nigerian economy.

Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Anthony Enahoro, Maitama Sule and Aminu Kano provided insightful, dissenting views that enriched public discourse during their time. Unfortunately, today’s political landscape is marred by the petulant outbursts of the likes of El-Rufai and Amaechi, which have replaced thoughtful analysis with vitriolic attacks. This trend is particularly concerning amidst the global economic uncertainty sparked by President Donald Trump’s trade wars. As the world navigates these turbulent times, Nigeria must develop strategic plans to mitigate the impact of external factors on its economy. Unfortunately, El-Rufai and Amaechi’s self-indulgence is unhelpful and must be discouraged.

El-Rufai in particular has a history of making bold and sometimes divisive comments. For instance, his 2012 tweet threatened anyone who challenged the Fulani, an ethnic group, and his 2019 statement warned election observers who interfered with Nigeria’s election would be sent back in “body bags”, sparking outrage. Given his tendency to speak his mind, it’s surprising that El-Rufai accepted the president’s offer of a ministerial appointment. This raises questions about his true intentions: did he genuinely support Tinubu’s government, or would he have resigned if his nomination had been confirmed?

Amaechi’s candid admission that the fear of poverty motivated him to join politics after graduating in 1987, and has kept him in the game, offers a revealing insight into the drivers of those in power. This revelation is particularly concerning, as it underscores the deep-seated dysfunction within Nigeria’s political system. In reality, politics should be a vocation, not a career.

However, in Nigeria, politics has become a career path due to the country’s limited opportunities for economic advancement. This stunted political economy has led to a situation where individuals view politics as a means of personal gain rather than a calling to serve. Consequently, those who approach politics as a career often have limited expertise and a narrow perspective, which can hinder their effectiveness as administrators.

The first generation of politicians, including Awolowo, Bode Thomas, Fani Kayode, Drs. M.A. Majekodunmi, Omotayo Omitowoju and Michael I. Oparah, brought a unique perspective to politics, having established themselves in their respective professions before entering public service. This background was evident in their thoughtful approach and impactful contributions.

On the contrary, the 1966 coup marked a turning point, as many politicians returned to their pre-politics careers. Unfortunately, today’s political landscape is dominated by one-dimensional politicians lacking diverse career experiences and management expertise, with their policies and decisions twisting and turning like a barber’s chair, which is detrimental to Nigeria’s progress.

Life, as the saying goes, is a complex chemistry experiment, and humans are the lab rats, constantly seeking the right mix of ingredients for a stable and fulfilling existence. In this laboratory, the ruling elite act as master chemists, manipulating power, privilege and ideology to maintain their grip on the state. They use propaganda, repression and allied wrong channels or tactics to preserve the status quo. The tragedy of Nigerian politics lies in the fact their statements often come across as provocative and overly broad. This approach can be alienating and unhelpful in finding solutions to the country’s challenges. Furthermore, it has led a situation where most of those who claim to be leading us “misappropriate, misapply, mislead and misdirect the electorate”.

So, what’s the alternative chemistry of life? It’s a mixture of active citizenship and collective action. It’s a formula that recognizes the inherent value of every human being, regardless of his or her background, identity or socioeconomic status. It’s a chemistry that’s messy, unpredictable and sometimes explosive – but it’s also the only way to create a truly just and equitable society.

Well, a time like this demands advice for the Bola Tinubu-led administration. To foster growth, the government should consult widely with individuals outside its echo chamber. This approach is reminiscent of former US President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s strategy during the New Deal era in the 1930s. When the New Deal wasn’t yielding the desired results, Roosevelt sought multiple lenses, bringing in contrarians and individuals with opposing views. Although their insights were sometimes disagreeable, they proved invaluable and refreshing.

A notable example of innovative policymaking is the establishment of the Small Businesses Administration, which inspired our own Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN). Interestingly, the idea for this game-changing initiative originated from a Letter to the Editor published in The Washington Post, written by an unknown lawyer from a small town. The letter highlighted the devastating impact of economic policies on small businesses nationwide. Recognizing the merit of the suggestions, the administration acted upon them, earning widespread acclaim and support for the government.

The Tinubu administration can draw valuable lessons from the experience of Konrad Adenauer, Germany’s post-war Chancellor. Adenauer’s approach of actively seeking out contrarian views helped shape Germany’s remarkable economic recovery after World War II and transformed the country into Europe’s largest and most stable economic success story. Similarly, the Tinubu administration would do well to avoid the pitfalls of groupthink and a variety of viewpoints, rather than risking “imprisonment in an echo chamber” that can stifle progress.

Effective time management and planning are also essential qualities of successful leaders. Again, Lee Kuan Yew’s ability to prioritize and implement policies drove Singapore’s success, while Mandela’s skillful time management enabled him to achieve great things despite adversity. In contrast, the failures of Saddam Hussein and Robert Mugabe to prioritize their countries’ needs and manage their time effectively led to widespread suffering and ultimately, their downfall.

May the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world, grant us peace in Nigeria!

The Reformed Arewa Youth Council of Nigeria (RAYCN) has raised the alarm over alleged plot by former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, former Sokoto Governor Attahiru Bafarawa and Sani Abdullahi Shinkafi to frustrate President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

At a briefing on Thursday, the group claimed that the trio is working to ensure the government does not succeed in its plans and programmes.

National President, Bilal Abdulahi, also claimed they are reportedly launching a campaign of calumny against the administration.

He added: “It is clear that their intention and their several meetings are aimed at intimidating the government President Tinubu, and the various organs of government and make the citizens feel that the government and her various organs are not doing sufficient enough to take the people to prosperity.

“This is nothing short of an attempt to overawe a democratic institution. It is clear that ever since their defeat at the polls by President Bola Tinubu, these three elements have not hidden their hate and disdain but for the person and organs of the various governments.

“It is however unfortunate that this hatred and disdain is pushing them to act against the office of the President and Commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces and rule of law. They must consequently be stopped with all might and not be allowed to go further.”

The group urged youths, religious organisations, and lovers of peace and democracy to support President Tinubu’s administration in its efforts to reform the country.

AYCF backs Matawalle’s warning to Amaechi, others over inflammatory rhetorics

The Arewa Youths Consultative Forum (AYCF) has expressed full support for the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Mohammed Matawalle, following his recent warning against the use of inflammatory rhetoric, particularly directed at prominent figures like Rotimi Amaechi.

In a statement by the AYCF President General, Yerima Shettima, the forum commended Matawalle’s stance, describing it as a crucial step in holding individuals accountable and upholding the rule of law.

Shettima emphasized that in times of heightened political tensions, leaders like Matawalle must speak out against divisive language that could incite violence or destabilize the country.

Shettima added that by condemning inflammatory rhetoric, Matawalle is sending a strong message that such behavior will not be tolerated, and those responsible will face consequences.

The AYCF expressed confidence that the Minister’s actions are in the best interest of the nation, urging leaders at all levels of government to take a firm stand against any form of speech that could lead to violence or unrest.

“By upholding the rule of law and holding individuals accountable for their actions, we can work towards a more peaceful and united Nigeria. Nigeria, a nation of diverse ethnicities and political viewpoints, requires a delicate balance to maintain peace and stability. Recent pronouncements by Amaechi and other certain political figures have threatened this equilibrium, prompting concerns about incitement and the potential for widespread unrest. While healthy political discourse and opposition are essential for a thriving democracy, deliberate incitement to violence crosses an unacceptable line” he stressed.

Shettima said, the comments attributed to Rotimi Amaechi, intended to incite violence or unrest, are a serious threat to national security, adding that such actions undermine the democratic process, sow seeds of discord among citizens, and can lead to catastrophic consequences, including loss of life and property.

“Nigeria’s government, in its responsibility to protect its citizens, must not tolerate such deliberate attempts to incite chaos from any individual or group, irrespective of their political standing. The law must be applied equally to all”.

He further said, Matawalle’s bold stance deserves commendation, adding that his decision to publicly address the issue and call out individuals perceived to be inciting violence is a necessary and courageous act, stressing that it demonstrates a commitment to maintaining peace and upholding the principles of justice.

“By directly challenging those who might feel above the law, Matawalle sets a powerful precedent. His actions serve as a stark reminder that no one is exempt from accountability, regardless of their past political positions or influence. It sends a strong message that the government will not stand idly by while individuals deliberately fan the flames of discord.

“This firm stance is crucial not only for maintaining immediate peace but also for setting a standard of responsible political conduct. Nigeria’s strength lies in its unity and diversity. This unity is threatened when individuals prioritize personal gain or political ambition over the well-being of the nation.

“The Arewa Youths Consultative Forum unequivocally supports Minister Matawalle’s call for calm and his firm stance against political incitement.  We believe that his actions are not only necessary but also crucial for safeguarding the peace and stability of Nigeria”.

Shettima said the government must show its commitment to upholding the rule of law by addressing any instance of incitement to violence, regardless of the perpetrator’s political standing while urging all political actors to engage in responsible and peaceful discourse, prioritize national unity, and work together to build a better future for all Nigerians.

“The nation’s future hinges on our collective responsibility to maintain peace and uphold the principles of justice and fairness,” Shettima stated.

Public incitement: Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council commends Matawalle for rebuking Amaechi

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide has took the former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi to the cleaners for his inciteful comments urging Nigerians to be prepared to wrestle power by force from the ruling class come 2027.

In a statement issued on behalf of the Council by Mazi Okwu Nnabuike National President, the group said such statement inciteful comments was not only reckless but also capable of destabilising the nation.

He, however commended the Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Muhammed Matawalle, for swiftly calling out this dangerous rhetoric and warning against actions that could lead to chaos and violence in Nigeria.

In the statement which reads in part, the group said: “The federal government must not allow anyone, regardless of their past political status, to incite unrest among Nigerian youths.

“It is ironic that Amaechi, who governed Rivers State for eight years and played a key role in the ousting of his own party, the PDP, is now attempting to act as a voice of reason. He was a major figure in the previous administration under President Muhammadu Buhari and cannot absolve himself of the challenges Nigeria faces today. His recent outburst is nothing but the frustration of a politician who was defeated in the APC presidential primary and has since been sidelined.

The Minister of State for Defence is absolutely right in calling for decisive action against individuals who seek to destabilise Nigeria for their selfish interests.

“We, therefore, stand firmly with Dr. Matawalle and urge the government to ensure that statements and actions capable of inciting violence come with appropriate consequences. No individual is above the law, and anyone attempting to disrupt the peace and stability of Nigeria must be held accountable.

“The entire Igbo youth community remains committed to the unity and progress of Nigeria, and we will not be part of any plot to undermine the current government. APC group slams Amaechi over comments against Tinubu, Nigerian politicians

The All Progressives Congress Media Network has slammed a former governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi for making deriding comments against President Bola Tinubu and Nigerian politicians.

Amaechi, who was minister of transportation under the immediate administration Muhammadu Buhari, allegedly accused Tinubu of not willing cede power to the younger generation.

He also said to have described Nigerian politicians as ‘sit-tight’ who cleave to power unnecessarily without commensurate benefits to the people.

Director-General of APC Media Network, Iniobong John in a statement in Uyo on Sunday accused Amaechi of inciting Nigerians against President Tinubu and the political class.

The statement reads, “The APC Media Network has taken note of the recent comments made by His Excellency, Rt Hon Rotimi Amaechi, regarding Nigerian politicians and their alleged attachment to power. We find it necessary to respond to these comments, as they are not only misguided but also hypocritical.

Read Also: Niger Delta Youth Congress condemns Amaechi’s call for violence

“Rt Hon Amaechi’s accusation that Nigerian politicians cling to power is a classic case of the pot calling the kettle black. Having held different public offices for twenty-four years, Amaechi’s own attachment to power is a matter of public record. His comments are therefore seen as a desperate attempt to deflect attention from his own political ambitions.

“It is imperative to remind Amaechi that his tenure as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Governor of Rivers State, and Minister of Transportation has been marred by controversy and criticism. His handling of public funds and resources has been questioned by many, and his comments on power are seen as an attempt to shift the focus away from his own record.

“Furthermore, Amaechi’s insinuation that President Bola Tinubu would not willingly cede power to the younger generation is wrong, unwarranted, and an incitement against the APC administration.

“It is essential to remind Amaechi that Nigeria is practicing constitutional democracy, where elections are won and lost. His own loss to President Tinubu during the APC’s presidential nomination convention is a testament to this fact”.

The group further said, “We urge Amaechi to reflect on his own career and motivations, rather than making baseless accusations against others. His comments are not only unbecoming of a statesman of his caliber but also a disservice to the APC, a party he is still a member of.

“The APC Media Network wishes to remind Amaechi that as a member of the APC, he should be working towards the advancement of the party’s ideals and principles, rather than engaging in divisive and destructive politics.

“We call on Amaechi to retract his comments and apologize to President Tinubu and the APC. We also urge him to focus on contributing positively to the development of the country, rather than engaging in petty politics”.
