    Amaechi: Buhari’s victory saved me

Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi yesterday said he would have been hounded out of the country by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)-led government, had the All Progressives Congress (APC) lost the election.

Amaechi spoke at the public presentation of the compilation of his administration’s achievements in Lagos. The book  “Dynamics of Change: The Amaechi Years” is edited by Dr Chidi Amuta and Dr Yemi Ogunbiyi.

Amaechi said he knew that he would be in trouble if change did not happen in Nigeria and was prepared to make the sacrifices necessary to make it happen.

“I knew I was going to be in trouble. Anything that would cause that change not to take place, I was ready to make that sacrifice. The federal government sent out a signal that if they won nobody should let me out of Nigeria from any airport. One day Asiwaju got angry with me. He was very angry. I went to his house with Mallam Nasir El-Rufai and knelt down, saying ‘please let’s not disagree, let’s win first and then we can disagree’.”

“I lost my passport in Ghana and went to the High Commission. They gave me a certificate but the Ambassador was given a query for doing so.  I later applied for a passport and they gave me green, not red. Now they have given it to me – two weeks ago,” Amaechi said.

The governor said while his battle with President Goodluck Jonathan lasted, many of his friends either abandoned or took care not to be seen with him in public. He said he was mostly preoccupied with bringing change to Nigeria and not about what to get from the government.

“I told Asiwaju that what is important is to make a history of the first civilian coup in Nigeria when your children and grandchildren read the history with your name as one of the people who helped bring about change in Nigeria.

“I said, let us focus on the victory. I remember the day of the convention, there were so many intrigues, there will be convention, there won’t be convention, I said my leader, if we don’t do the convention we are finished, the press will say APC cannot hold a convention, lead us now, there must be convention and election. So, he turned to me and said look for Tunde (Fashola), let us go.”

The event which was well-attended by chieftains of the APC was a time of tributes and eulogies for Amaechi by his friends and colleagues. Some of those present included: APC national leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, former interim chairman, Chief Bisi Akande and Nobel laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka.

There were also Governors Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun), Abdulazeez Yari (Zamfara), representatives of Kwara and Bauchi state governors. governors-elect of Kaduna and Lagos states, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai and Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode.

Also there were Dr Dakuku Peterside, APC governorship candidate in Rivers, Alabo Graham-Douglas, Tonye Cole, former governors of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi, Segun Oni and Niyi Adebayo. Others are: Senator Olorunnimbe Mamora, business mogul and Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, Bishop Hassan Mathew Kukah (book reviewer), Justice George Oguntade, National Women Leader, Hajia Ramatu Aliu, National Secretary of the APC, Alhaji Mala Buni, Senator Daisy Danjuma, Mr Jim Ovia and Vanguard newspaper publisher Mr Sam Amuka-Pemu.

Prof. Soyinka, who wrote the forward to the book –Tyranny of Courage- described Amaechi as a man of principle and strong conviction, who was willing to stand by his belief at a great risk. These qualities, he said made him to take exceptions to his own personal rule not to write any recommendations or forwards for books. He also described Asiwaju Tinubu as the “architect of change.”

Soyinka said: “The political atmosphere today, whatever you call it, change or hope, or cautious or careless hope, I recognise two individuals who led the change. One of them I call him the architect of that process, he is Ahmed Bola Tinubu. The arrowhead of the charge that led to the change is the man we are gathered here to honour.”

Soyinka decried the incident that led to the disbandment of the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF), praising Amaechi for standing up to his colleagues for change.

“It is basic arithmetic fallacy of governance when 16 is said to be higher than 19, something is fundamentally wrong. Governor Amaechi stood up and challenged even his own colleagues saying, let us change the orientation of the nation. Somebody once said to me to tell the young man that he was going to destroy himself that he should slow down. Of course I didn’t deliver the message.”

Bishop Kukah praised the editors of the book for the insights and ability to document the giant strides made by the Amaechi administration but noted that the book fell short on the narratives about the governor’s background and early days.

He also noted, some contradictory claims about Amaechi’s days at the University of Port Harcourt and student unionism days.  Kukah also noted that the book was almost silent about the era when Amaechi was the Speaker of Rivers State House of Assembly, a part he noted, prepared him for the office of the governor. He recommended the 251-page book, not for the bookshelves but as a coffee table companion.

Justice Adolphus Karibi-Whyte was lavish in his praise of Amaechi. “When I first met him, everything about him gave me a promise of a future leader, he respects age and status and analysed situations properly. I was elated when he asked me to be the chairman because he still remembers the relationship,” he said.

Karib-Whyte said the governor was key in bringing all the ethnic nationalities in Rivers State, struggling for leadership together and fostering peace in the state.

Mamora said Amaechi is a “great friend” and a fellow former speaker, he also referred to him as an “unusual governor who is simple, plain and blunt to a fault and a combination of mettle, bold and resolute.”

Rivers panel: Amaechi’s aide indicts PDP chair

The Rivers State Commissioner for Power, Augustine Nwokocha, has listed the solutions to incessant political killings and attacks in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area.

Nwokocha noted that should the State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman Felix Obuah call on his killer gang to sheathe their swords and the police rise up to their responsibilities, there would be sustained peace in the area.

The commissioner also said efforts should be made to arrest and prosecute the PDP ‘warlord’ in the area, simply identified as Ejima (aka Don 1), gang members and sponsors as deterrent to others.

He said a legitimate engagement of youths would reduce violence and insecurity in the area.

Nwokocha spoke yesterday in Port Harcourt, the state capital, when he appeared before the Prof. Chidi Odinkalu-led Judicial Commission of Enquiry into political violence in the state.

Many Rivers indigenes, especially those of the local government, have been murdered in the last few months without anyone accounting for their deaths.

Governor Chibuike Amaechi, in April, inaugurated a nine-man panel of enquiry to investigate the killings with a view to prosecuting the culprits.

Nwokocha narrated how his house and that of his Special Adviser on Domestic Affairs were destroyed.

The commissioner said five persons had been killed in his Okporsi community of Omoku in the last few months.

He said over 100 bullets were fired on his house.

Nwokocha traced the escalation of insecurity in his area and the state from the time an Abuja High Court upturned the leadership of the state PDP in 2014 and installed Obuah, who he said never contested the party’s chairmanship.

According to him, on assumption of office, Oguah vowed to ensure that no other party exists in the local government.

The commissioner noted that this led to his employment of hoodlums to make life unbearable for non-PDP members and the local government ungovernable for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Asked if the killings were politically motivated, Nwokocha said: “It cannot be totally true that all the killings were political. The police reports said some of them are inter- and intra-cult related. In my community, Okporsi, I hear that there are De-gbam, De-Well, Sailors and Vikings cult groups.

“Some of the firearms/weapons paraded during those attacks include AK-47, machine guns, Bazooka, dynamites, among others. Firearms are easily accessible in the Niger Delta region.”

•Rivers gov: they’re busy sacking people and making appointments that should be left to incoming govt
•Amaechi, APC leaders should be ignored, says Rivers PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday dismissed as  diversionary and unnecessary, claims by the All Progressives Congress (APC) that the Presidency and the PDP were not cooperating in the transition process.

The National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Chief Olisa Metuh, said that the meetings of the transition and inauguration committees of both parties have been going on fruitfully and wondered where the  false alarm was coming from.

But the APC National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, who is a member of his party’s transtition committee,  insisted that no formal meeting between the panels  has taken place.

Governor  Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State  joined the fray yesterday as he   took a swipe  at  President Goodluck Jonathan  for  allegedly spending valuable part  of his last days in office sacking people and making appointments that ought to  be left to the incoming administration to handle.

Chief Metuh, in a statement in Abuja branded the APC’s allegation as an unfortunate display of arrogance and falsehood ostensibly aimed at heating up the system and creating room to cover for its inadequacies, thereby inventing excuses for any failure in office.

He said: “We can confirm that the APC Transition Committee led by Mallam Ahmed Joda has met at least twice with the Presidency team led by Vice President Namadi Sambo, while the Timipre Sylva-led APC Inauguration Committee has been meeting almost on a daily basis with the PDP team led by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim. It is, therefore, most uncharitable for the APC to attempt to mislead the people by claiming that the PDP-led Presidency was not cooperating in the process.

“Although the ruling party suffered some electoral set back, Nigerians are witness to the fact that the PDP has remained humble in defeat, while focusing on rebuilding and reinventing itself. Such should not in any way warrant the unnecessary attacks, vituperations and insults from the APC.

“As we look up from the lowest level we have ever fallen, we are fully determined to start the process of ascending back to an acceptable level in earnest. The APC must, therefore, learn to be decent and cease to be arrogant as that would amount to taking the goodwill of the people for granted.

“What should be of more concern to an incoming government like APC is the negative signals and the rising worries by Nigerians over its flip-flops and apparent nervousness of its President-elect who has started reneging on his campaign promises.”

But Alhaji Mohammed stood by his position that “as of today (yesterday), there has been no meeting between members of Jonathan’s  Transition Committee and  the President-elect’s,” even while admitting   that the Chairman of the President-elect’s committee, Alhaji Ahmed Joda “in the company of two or three members of our committee has met with the Vice President and the Secretary  to the Government of the Federation.”

He added: “However, there are 19 members  of the President-elect’s committee of which I am privileged  to be one and as of today, we have had no formal meeting with Jonathan’s team.

“We don’t even  know who the members are. Or is Jonathan’ Transition Committee made up of only the Vice President  and SGF?

“If the VP and SGF have met with four members of a 19-man team, does that constitute a meeting with the President-elect’s Transition-committee.

“As a matter of fact, we have formally requested in writing  for a meeting with the Jonathan’s Transition Committee  and have received no reply.”

He said Metuh failed to controvert the APC claim that the Federal Government had refused to  “give us  one page  of handing over notes.

“They told our Chairman, Alhaji Ahmed Joda, in one of their informal meetings  that we should not expect any handling over documents before the 14th of May 2015.”

He challenged Metuh and the Presidency to deny this, saying: “Is this Metuh and the Presidency’s  understanding of a smooth transition?”

In Port Harcourt, Governor  Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State  took a swipe  at  President Goodluck Jonathan  for  spending valuable part  of his last days in office sacking people and making appointments that should be left to the incoming administration to handle.

The governor described the development as provocative.

But he said the  All Progressives  Congress  (APC)  “has refused to dance to PDP’s drumbeats, choosing to show maturity.”

Governor Amaechi was reacting to the allegation by the President’s party, PDP, that  he had refused to co-operate with Mr. Nyesom Wike, winner of the last governorship election in the state, ahead of the May 29 handing over.

Information Commissioner   Ibim  Semenitari who spoke for the governor said that the PDP and not the APC was guilty of trying to frustrate its successor in power.

Amaechi said he and his commissioners are ready with  their hand-over notes, preparatory to the terminal date of his administration on May 29.

He  wondered what he would be doing in office after  the expiration of his tenure.

His words: “We are ready for handover, unlike the PDP at the centre that is busy making new appointments and sacking people.

“They have refused to brief the Muhammadu Buhari Transition Team, and the APC is not screaming blue murder. Rather, the APC at the centre is meeting, planning and preparing for government.”

He denied  that he has not been co-operating with Wike, saying: “They stole the outcomes of the April 11 elections and gave no hoot. They declared their candidates winners with the criminal connivance of the INEC and cared less about local, national and international opinions that what took place in Rivers State on April 11 was everything, but an election.

“The more the APC leaders had pushed for electoral materials, which are statutory demands of an electoral litigation, the farther PDP and INEC had kept them, and seemingly, they have had their way.

“So, they have all going for them. They have nothing to worry about. If and when Mr. Ezebuwon Nyesom Wike will be sworn in, the issue of handover notes and other statutory briefings should not be any worry to him. After all, PDP in Rivers State has constituted Inauguration and Transition Committees.

“Already, Wike has, as part of his transition team, the Rivers State Deputy Governor, Engr. Tele Renner Ikuru, who is the Vice-Chairman of the Rivers  State Executive Council and who is abreast of all projects and programmes of the current administration, having chaired many sensitive state government committees and state cabinet meetings.”

Semenitari admonished  PDP leaders  in the state to learn from  APC  members  who, according to him, have refused to be provoked by the PDP.

She  said: “Governor Amaechi has not made any new appointment, as he knows he is leaving office on May 29, unlike what PDP is doing at the centre. They are busy sacking and making appointments, functions that should be entirely left for the incoming administration.

“Provocative as it is, APC has rather concerned itself with continued preparations to give Nigerians good governance. APC has refused to dance to PDP’s evil drumbeats, choosing to show maturity.

“Let PDP in Rivers State leave Governor Amaechi alone. He is a busy man and did not contest any election. Governor Amaechi is known for committing his all into any worthy assignment or duty he is called to do.”

The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of INEC in Rivers, Dame Gesila Khan  denied that the commission helped PDP rig the election as claimed by Amaechi while the   Publicity Secretary of the PDP in the state , Samuel Nwanosike, said  Amaechi should be ignored.

Khan and Nwanosike maintained that elections took place in Rivers state on March 28 and April 11, insisting that the polls were free, fair, transparent and credible, with the PDP winning overwhelmingly, in view of the popularity and wide acceptability of the party’s candidates.

The Rivers REC of INEC stated that all the requested electoral materials were being made available to the leaders and lawyers of all the political

The Rivers State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Ngozi Nwatarali, has hailed Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi for supporting the scheme throughout the period of his tenure.

Nwatarali spoke yesterday at the swearing-in of this year’s Batch ‘A’ Corps members at the NYSC permanent orientation camp at Nonwa-Gbam, Tai Local Government Area.

She noted that the governor considered the safety and welfare of youths a priority during his tenure.

The coordinator said he also ensured adequate provision and improvement of the orientation camp for the comfort of Corps members.

Nwatarali said: “…I want to appreciate Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi for making the safety and welfare of Corps members a priority.”

The NYSC coordinator said 2,680 Corps members had reported to camp by midnight of Wednesday.

Of the figure, she said 1,165 were men and 1,515 women.

She said the government set up the NYSC orientation programme to equip Corps members on their roles during their service year.

Nwatarali said the programme was a forum for the Corps members to have a better understanding of the environment, culture and the people of the state.

Press Freedom Day: Amaechi urges more support for democracy

Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi has  advised journalists to continue to support democracy to move the nation forward.

With this year’s World Press Freedom Day coming barely three weeks to the historic inauguration of Gen. Muhammadu Buhari as the President, the governor said the roles of journalists could not be over-emphasised.

Amaechi, who is also the chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), through the Rivers Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari, yesterday in Port Harcourt, urged journalists to continue to be fearless, accurate, fair and objective.

The Rivers governor described this year’s theme for the World Press Freedom Day: “Let Journalism Thrive: Towards better reporting, gender equality and media safety in the digital age,” as apt and timely, calling for better opportunities for women journalists.

The United Nations General Assembly, in December 1993, following the recommendation of General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), declared May 3 as World Press Freedom Day.

The day is to raise awareness on the importance of freedom of the press and to remind governments of their duty to respect and uphold the right to freedom of expression, enshrined under Article 19 of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

But, Amaechi said: “Freedom of the press and freedom of expression are fundamental human rights and essential pillars of democratic societies and good governance. Journalists bridge the information gap.

“Many journalists have died, disappeared or in jail across the world, in their determination to bring good news to the members of the public and they must not be forgotten.

“Every effort should be made by government to ensure that journalists do their work in safe and enabling environments, while the crimes against them are prosecuted.

“However, the media professionals also have an obligation to ensure fairness, accuracy, decency, responsibility, impartiality and objectivity in the discharge of their duties.”

Amaechi inaugurates panel on Rivers political killings

Rivers State Governor and Chairman of the Nigeria Governor’s Forum, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has inaugurated a nine-man Commission of Enquiry on politically motivated killings in the state.

Prof Chidi Odinkalu is its chairman and Sir Samuel Egbe its secretary.

Other members are: Prof Nlerum Okogbule, Prof Owunari A. Georgewill, Dr. Richard Ofuru, Mrs. Asivosuo M. Oriye, Dr. Joy Ejiofor, Mrs. Ayo M. O. Obe and Rev. Father Michael Akiri.

At the inauguration yesterday at the Government House, Amaechi said the probe panel would complete its assignment within 30 days.

The governor explained that the panel would investigate why victims of violence were killed, who killed them, and under what circumstances.

He urged the commission to make recommendations that would assist the government to forestall a future recurrence.

Amaechi said: “When I visited Obirikom, in the Ogba-Egbeme-Ndoni Local Government Area, in the household of the late Chief Christopher Adube, nine persons were killed by assassins. Those killed were his three children, his younger brother, two security guards and two others. Two of the late Chief Adube’s children are still receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital.

“There was a day I was arguing with the police commissioner, now posted to Enugu. I said I was told 11 persons had been killed. He said: ‘No, only seven persons.’ Again, in the same Omoku, whether it is seven or 11 persons, these are human lives.

“At Okrika, when the All Progressives Congress (APC) went there on campaign, where the governorship candidate of APC was seated, he would have been hit by a bullet. But God saved him; he had left that place. It was the first day APC went on campaigns in Okirika, and the police were present…”

Voters safe in Rivers, says Amaechi

Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, has assured the electorate in the state that his administration has taken all necessary steps to ensure their safety and security during today’s governorship and House of Assembly elections.

Amaechi, who is also the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), yesterday in Port Harcourt, enjoined Rivers people to come out en masse to cast their votes and report all forms of lawlessness and acts contrary to the Electoral Act to the security agents who, he assured, would deal with offenders, according to the provisions of the law.

The governor warned that the full weight of the law would be brought to bear on troublemakers who might attempt to disrupt the democratic process in any part of the state.

The NGF chairman reassured Rivers people of his firm commitment to their safety and well-being at all times.

Amaechi not involved in accident – Rivers govt

The Rivers State Government has stated that Governor Rotimi Amaechi is not involved in any accident, as being insinuated.

The Rivers government, through the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari, Friday in Port Harcourt, said the accident rumour was the product of mischief makers, evil harbingers and those who wished the state governor dead.

Amaechi, who is also the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), as at press time, was in his office at the Government House, Port Harcourt, attending to state matters.

Rivers government said: “We make haste to inform Rivers people that their governor is hale, hearty and ready to cast his ballot tomorrow (today), during the governorship and House of Assembly elections. The rumour is nothing but the handiwork of mischief makers and those who wish the governor ill, but unfortunately, they are not God.

“While the rumour was spreading like the harmattan wildfire, to the admiration of Amaechi’s foes, the governor was busy attending to state matters, including receiving some prominent members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who defected from the party to the All Progressives Congress (APC).”

The Rivers government also assured the people of the state that Amaechi would be at his duty desk as governor, through the grace of God, until May 29 this year, when he would hand over to a new administration.

The government of Rivers state said: “We want to assure Rivers people that Governor Amaechi is committed to finishing very strong and through the grace of God, will remain at his desk until May 29, 2015, when he will hand-over to a new, democratically-elected administration.”

All concerned persons, who made inquiries about Amaechi’s condition were lauded for their care, describing them as great friends and would have nothing to worry about.

  • Amaechi: killers of our supporters ‘ll not go unpunished

Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi has vowed that all the persons involved in the brutal killings of supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, during the electioneering period will face the full weight of the law.

Amaechi made the declaration when he paid a condolence visit to the families of the late Chief Christopher Adube in Obrikom, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers state.

Adube, along with three of his children, his younger brother, lyke Ikechukwu, and his two gatemen were shot dead last Friday in his Obrikom residence, while two of his children, who were wounded by bullet shots are receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.

Amaechi, who is also the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), also assured the bereaved family members that his administration would fish out the killers and prosecute them accordingly.

He said: “All those responsible for this bloody act will pay for it. This kind of killing of APC supporters has gone beyond political violence. Why should politicians go beyond politicking and try to take anybody’s life? They will pay for this, I promise to fish out the culprits.”

The Rivers governor, earlier during his door-to-door sensitisation tour to wards in Khana local government  assured that votes during the April 11 governorship and the House of Assembly elections in the state would count at every polling unit.

While addressing crowds of APC supporters in Bani, Bean Ken-Khana, Kaani-Babee, Nwiyakara, Kono-Boue, Uegwere-Boue, Zaakpor, Kaani and Opu-Oko communities, Amaechi frowned at the electoral fraud and rigging of the last presidential and national Assembly elections results by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He warned that any criminally-minded person, who attempts to deprive Rivers people from exercising their legitimate franchise will be made to face the full weight of the law.

The Rivers Governor said: “We are all eye witnesses to what happened during the last presidential election, where the PDP carried out electoral fraud with INEC officials and the police. But now, the police or the military will not harass you again. I came to thank you all for refusing to vote without result sheets last Saturday (March 28).

“I called one of my friends in the Army and cautioned him about the last election and the victory of Buhari. He told me on phone that: “Sir, parade has changed gear.” What it means is that, supporters of APC will no longer be molested and harassed by the police or the military.

“Everybody can come out and exercise their franchise. Ensure that your party agents are at every polling unit, at least 50 persons per unit, wait after accreditation and voting before allowing the party agents to follow the results to the collection centres. Our votes for the governorship election will count at the polling units and recorded in the result sheets.”

The NGF chairman also urged Rivers people, especially those of Khana Local Government Area, to massively turn out for the governorship elections on Saturday and vote for the governorship standard bearer of the APC, Dr. Dakuku Adol Peterside.

He said: “Even if the PDP stole our votes and our mandate last presidential election, they have agreed to behave this time around. You have a duty to come out en masse, do not go to farm on Saturday. It is set aside for you to come out and vote the candidates of your choice. We will all vote for APC and ensure Dakuku becomes our governor.”

Amaechi also admonished the decampees from the PDP to APC to join the party and increase the votes for the APC’s governorship candidate, stressing that it was the only meaningful means of bringing the Federal Government closer to the state, to increase the pace of development after May 29 this year.

He said: “I came to seek your votes for the governorship and state House of Assembly elections. Tell your brothers and sisters in PDP, who are willing to decamp or has decamped to the APC to remain steadfast.

“They should join us to increase the votes of APC. If we come together and vote Dakuku and our lawmakers on the platform of the APC, when Buhari assumes office on May 29, we expect the pace of development in Rivers State to also increase.”
