Sanwo-Olu, Fashola, Ambode lead Lagos APC to endorse Tinubu for second term

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State yesterday endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term.

The chapter also began mobilisation for the 2027 general election with a historic stakeholders’ meeting.

Party leaders, who were locked in sober reflection at the meeting held at the Eko Hotel, Victoria Island, attempted a review of the last polls, drawing instructive lessons from the setback.

Apart from endorsing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for re-election, party faithful brainstormed on the ongoing voter registration, the dynamic electoral demography and importance of mobilising the youths to gravitate towards the vision and philosophy of the ruling party.

President Tinubu’s base is Lagos where he served as governor between 1999 and 2007 and anchored the activities of the opposition as the Leader.

In the Third Republic, he also represented Lagos West, the largest district, in the Senate.

The motion for President Tinubu’s endorsement for a second term was moved by the Ayangburen of Ikorodu, Oba Kabiru Shotobi, and seconded by House of Assembly Speaker Mudashiru Obasa.

They said the President has done a lot in the last two years, adding that the country deserves the progressive continuity.

They also urged party members to unite and work for President Tinubu and the party’s victory at the poll.

Oba Shotobi, who spoke on behalf of traditional rulers and other stakeholders, said: “We endorse President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to go for the second time. So, I move.”

Obasa said: “In view of the submissions made by all the stakeholders and motion just being moved by our Royal Majesty of Ikorodu, I do hereby second the motion of my colleagues from Lagos State House of Assembly and the people of Lagos State. I so second.”

Governor Sanwo-Olu said President Tinubu deserves to be supported for another term because he has fulfilled many of his campaign promises to Nigerians.

He said: “Our president, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is the 12th governor in Lagos State. We have listened to all of our stakeholders here today. And by unanimous decision taken by all of the representatives of the stakeholders on this stage…run for second term.

“I believe that this message will get to Aso Rock and will get to the nooks and crannies of this great country.”

The meeting was attended by all the political leaders, including members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) led by its chairman Prince Oluyole Olusi, former governors Babatunde Fashola and Akinwunmi Ambode, Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, member of the House Assembly, local government chairmen, political leaders and traditional rulers from all the five divisions in the state.

Ministers of Education Maruf Tunji Alausa, Trade and Industries Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy Mr. Wale Edun gave the scorecard of the President to justify the need for his continuation in office.

Hamzat also listed the achievements of the Sanwo-Olu Administration.

Senator Tokunbo Abiru (Lagos East), who spoke on behalf of the National Assembly Caucus, said: “We, in Lagos, the cradle of progressive politics, have long understood what visionary leadership looks like. As Governor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed

Tinubu transformed Lagos into a model of fiscal innovation, urban development, and inclusive governance.

“Today, as President, he is applying that same strategic clarity and courage to the entire federation. Therefore, on behalf of the good people of Lagos East Senatorial

District and in concert with the collective will of our great party,

“I proudly and unequivocally endorse President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for re-election in 2027.

We have seen his courage, we have felt the impact of his reforms, we are confident in the brighter future he is building for Nigeria. Mr. President, Lagos stands with you.”

APC National Secretary Senator Ajibola Basiru, who represented the National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, emphasised that why voter registration is important, getting registered voters to vote is more important.

Senators Wasiu Eshinlokun-Sanni (Lagos Central) and Idiat Adebule (lagos West) also attended.

Also at the meeting were Southwest APC leader Isaacs Kekemeke, James Odunmbaku, Tony Adefuye, Olumuyiwa Sosanya, Yomi Finnih,  former Deputy Governor Olufemi Pedro, Sen. Ganiyu Solomon, Olorunfunmi Basorun; James Faleke, Samuel Adedayo, Ademorin Kuye, National Youth Leader Dayo Israel, and party chairman and host, Cornelius Ojelabi.

Also, a special presentation on voter apathy and sanctity of election was made by Fasola.

Welcoming the stakeholders, Ojelabi urged the members to register enmass, promising that the party will give N1million to the unit, N5 million to the ward and N20 million to the local government with the highest number of registered voters.

He said the love the members have for the president, the governors, lawmakers and party chairmen can only be translated into victory if they register and vote.

Fashola hailed the ideological foundation of the party, saying: “We are progressives because we are determined to improve the human condition.”

He noted that while APC is waxing stronger, it has become difficult for the opposition to form a merger or colation.

The former governor applauded past party chairmen – Abiodun Ogunleye, and Oladele Ajomale, Tunde Balogun, and Ojelabi for effectively managing the party.

Fashola alerted party stalwarts to the reality of increasing voter registration and decreasing voter turnout on poll day, stressing that the 30 per cent turnout in 2023 is not worthy of applause.

He urged the chapter to interrogate why voters are decreasing in Lagos.

Fashola queried: “Are our policies and programmes resonating with the people? What does our reward system look like in the party? How do we network with ourselves?

Noting that hope is not lost, the former governor said “Renewed Hope should generate renewed enthusiasm.

Fashola said: “In APC states, where are the youth wings?

“To the extent that elections are man-made, they are susceptible to errors.

But, he said the errors should be reduced to the minimum.

He clarified that the stakeholders’ meeting was not a rally or campaign, adding that no serious strategy can also be discussed in the open.

The former governor pointed out that electoral actions can sometimes defile logic and rationality.

He stressed: “At any election season, people are looking for a political message and only the party that can send the message to the voters would triumph.”

“I wish to publicly reaffirm my absolute and unshakable loyalty to the APC, the party under which I had the privilege of serving Lagos State as governor in 2015, and to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, my leader, mentor, and a tireless champion for Nigeria’s progress,” Ambode said.

The former Governor lauded Tinubu as a “proven achiever and result-oriented leader” whose administration has implemented reforms in pensions, student loans, youth empowerment, and economic growth. Tinubu not cause of current hardship, says Ambode

Erstwhile Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has said President Bola Tinubu is not the cause of the hardship in the nation and should be absolved of any blame.

Ambode spoke at the Chapter Eight of Akinjide Adeosun Foundation’s 2024 Leadership Colloquium and Award with the theme: Economic Asphyxiation – The Wisdom of Authentic Leaders, at Alliance Francaise in Ikoyi, Lagos.

Ambode said Nigeria’s problems had long existed, and needed a courageous leader like President Tinubu to address holistically.

“It (current situation) has nothing to do with the singular person called Mr. President. But if we don’t understand the fundamental, we will start doing the blame game. We need to face our problems frontally.

“The major issue is that we are even tired of not fixing our issues. Now, we have found somebody that has decided, in person of President Tinubu,” he said.

The former governor, who stressed the need to make executive reforms on the coordination circle around the President, urged Nigerians to be supportive, resilient, and patriotic.

He traced Nigeria’s problems to the slave trade era, describing it as “the divide and extract strategy”.

According to him, Nigeria needs self-awareness strategy to address post-COVID-19 era problems.

“Until we decide ourselves to say that we should unite for the common cause called Nigeria, the security issues will not go. We are all in a position to actually support Mr. President. Let us start to look at it from a different prism.

“We don’t have to wake up in the morning and be talking ill of Nigeria. We get what we profess about Nigeria.

“We must think out of the box. We have to feed ourselves. When we start to think by ourselves and we resolve the issues concerning Nigeria, we will smile,” he added.

Commenting on the essence of authentic leadership, Ambode said regardless of how weak the followers might be, Nigerian leaders must stand in the front and continually show confidence that tomorrow will be alright.

  • Gokada returns with safer service

Nigeria’s leading motorbike service, Gokada has announced that it has relaunched its operations in Lagos with new motorcycles and better-equipped riders.

The riders, Gokada said, have been trained in safe driving standards, GPS navigation, and customer service.

It would be recalled that Gokada halted its operation on August 14, citing the need to improve its safety standards and skills of the riders.

Founder and Co-Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Gokada, Fahim Saleh, at a briefing in Ilupeju, Lagos said: “Gokada has always prided itself on setting the standard in the market for safety and service. Hairnets, DOT certified helmets, extensive training – these are all reasons safety on our bikes have been so consistent and how we were able to convince so many to give this new age bike taxi a shot. As we scale, what we have now would be the template for what all our future riders will follow. We took the risk to pause for a moment and improve on that template to provide our customers with exceptional service at scale.”

Gokada, Saleh said, has upskilled existing and newly engaged GRiders in advanced knowledge of defensive driving behaviours for enhanced safety, GPS navigation, and optimized customer service delivery.

“In addition to this, the brand has also overhauled its entire motorbike fleet and acquired first-of-its-kind, super-efficient TVS motorbikes and fitted their pilots with Bluetooth enabled helmets allowing for more seamless communication and navigation experience,” he said.

Gokada Co-CEO Ayodeji Adewumni said: “Gokada 2.0 is all about our unflinching commitment to our customers. We believe that it is better to suspend our operations for two weeks so we can retool and revamp for unmatched service delivery and exceptional experience with the Gokada brand for a long time to come.  It will be an incredible time to use the Gokada services as we journey to transform transportation in Nigeria and the rest of Africa. As part of this relaunch we have also made several upgrades to the management team, and I am truly excited about Gokada 2.0”

Director of Government Relations Kayode Adegbola added: “We are excited to continue setting the standard in our industry by exceeding all of the regulatory requirements in Nigeria and partnering with government organisations like the Lagos State Government to help move residents through quicker, more comfortable, safer and responsible means.”

  • Full text: Ambode’s farewell message

    My fellow Lagosians.

With a heart full of gratitude, I address you today for the last time as your governor. It has been an honour and a privilege of a lifetime to serve you for the last four years.

It has been a remarkable journey which has had a lasting impact on my life and I want to thank all Lagosians for the experience of these last four years.

As in the beginning when we visited every single corner of this state, listening to you and asking for your votes, I have felt the power of your support, your collective energy and the endless goodwill that has propelled us to achieve many things.

For this administration, policies, programmes and projects aimed at lifting more of our people out of poverty and making every part of the State safe, accessible and economically viable were always the priority; the driving force behind all our decisions and plans.

A few of our policies might have been unpopular but these were decisions taken with the best interest of our State in mind. With the benefit of hindsight, maybe we could have done some things differently but our intention was always clear, for the good of Lagos.

Even in those tough times, your constructive feedback and patience helped us surmount the challenges and enabled us grow stronger.

As a little boy growing up in Lagos, all I wanted was to be an accountant. This State gave me that and so much more. Our State is a land of opportunities, a home for everyone and a place where dreams come true. It is our duty and responsibility to ensure that we remain a centre of opportunities and growth for everyone; a place where people can achieve their dreams and aspirations.

From being just a commercial centre, our State has now become a prime destination for tourism, sports, entertainment and culture. And the future is even brighter with more exciting prospects and possibilities. In the near future, with God on our side, Lagos will take its rightful place in the comity of major city-States of the world.

Fellow Lagosians, it has been a remarkable journey. One in which we have pushed boundaries and moved our State to another level. A journey in which we have transformed many aspects of our State and set the ball rolling in other sectors. But there is still a lot more to be done.

But it is a job not for only the government; it is a responsibility for us all. In Lagos everyone counts and we all have a part to play.

By tomorrow, there will be a change of guard in our State. I will be stepping down and a new Governor will be sworn in. We will have a new Governor and a new administration with the same objective; achieving a better Lagos.

Those who have had the privilege of serving our dear State in different capacities especially as Governors owe their successes to your prayers, understanding and support. The same courtesy and cooperation that you gave to my predecessors from the first elected Governor of the State, Alhaji Lateef Jakande to our national leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN) to my humble self, I urge you to extend same to the next administration of Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu and ensure that he succeeds. It is in our best interest to do so.

I am immensely grateful to the three arms of Government, the Executive, the Legislature and the Judiciary for their immense support throughout the tenure of our administration.

I also reserve special thanks for the leadership, elders and members of our great party, the All Progressives Congress, the Local Government Councils and community leaders, all our Security agencies, civil society groups and our religious leaders.

I also owe a debt of gratitude to the President, Muhammadu Buhari, and the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osibanjo (SAN) for their support in the last four years.

To my wife, Bolanle and the children, who have had to endure many days and nights without me; I thank you for your love and steadfastness. You will continue to be my pillar of strength.

To all Lagosians; for your love, compassion, cooperation and support, I am eternally grateful. My love always.

    God bless you.

    God bless Lagos State, and

God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria

  • Ambode: Exiting strong with wild applause

Tension was palpable and expectations high across the state on October 3rd, 2018,  a day after the controversial All Peoples Congress (APC) governorship primary elections were held in Lagos and Lagosians were awaiting the next step Governor Akinwunmi Ambode would take to consummate his avowed second term bid. The chairman of the APC Committee, Chief Clement Ebri, had earlier in the day surprised many when he turned around to announced the results of an election he had told the world did not take place.

Hence, expectation was on the high side; people were expecting the governor to either fight on to contest the election or surrender and congratulate Babajide Sanwo-Olu the declared winner of the primary election. Like most statesmen, Ambode chose the latter, he addressed the state and pledged to work with Sanwo-Olu to ensure APC’s at the general election.

“The interests of our beloved State must always supersede that of any person or group. It is in this regard that I wholeheartedly congratulate the winner of the Lagos State APC Primaries, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu and urge all Lagosians to immediately support our party’s gubernatorial candidate in the 2019 elections and work for the success of our dear party”, a relaxed Ambode told people of the state. The governor did not stop at that, he went ahead to campaign with Sanwo-Olu and even transverse the country with President Muhammadu Buhari to canvass support for the party.

And in spite of his inability to secure a second term, he can hold his head high  because history will be kind to him! The commissioning of his last set of  completed projects by President Muhammadu Buhari recently became his crowning glory! The projects are landmark projects which Lagosians will live to remember for a long time. These included the 10-lane Oshodi/Murtala Mohammed International Airport; 170-bed and well equipped Ayinke House at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital; Four Lagos Theatres; new 820 mass transit buses and the iconic multi-level Oshodi transport interchange. Just few days ago, he commissioned the Bariga Water Jetty, Ilaje roads, Lagos State University Senate Building and other impactful projects. The peculiar nature of Lagos politics notwithstanding, Ambode is an achiever by any standard! It was so bad that for the first time in the history of the state, the Lagos State House of Assembly refused to transmit the approved budget to the governor for accent so as to starve him of funds in the twilight of his tenure!

Apart from his last set of inaugurated legacy projects,  Ambode, right from his first day in office started writing his name in gold through various developmental projects in Lagos State including the rapid transformation of the 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local  Council Development Areas. No matter the politics surrounding his re-election failure, Ambode has left his indelible footprints in the sand of time  and nobody can obliterate this. To prove that he is in support of continuity, he reiterated his commitment to the State Development Plan (2012-2025) which is built on four pillars of Social Development and Security; Infrastructural  Development; Economic Development and Sustainable Environment.

On assumption of office in 2015, Ambode immediately embarked on payment of backlog of N11billion as arrears to retirees of Lagos State Government and put smiles on the faces of many indigent families.   In his effort to develop rural areas, he completed more than 300 road projects in 20 Local Governments and 37 Local Development Council Areas. In order to secure lives and property, Ambode  acquired equipment worth more than 7 billion Naira for the State Police Command and Rapid Response Squad and improved insurance and death benefit schemes for officers.

The operation LightUpLagos ensured  streetlights were erected on many roads in the state while the Bus Reform Initiative was launched to bequeath a world class transportation system to the State. New bus terminals and shelters were constructed across the state while thousands of new buses were introduced. The Ambode road revolution saw to the rehabilitation and reconstruction of many roads while new overhead bridges were built across the state. The Berger bus stop which is the gateway to Lagos was transformed such that sanity was brought into the hitherto rough area.

A special Task Force was established which cleared the Apapa-Oshodi expressway of trucks, tankers and trailers while a Safety Arena was built in Oshodi, to bring all the Departments and Agencies responsible for safety and emergency management under one roof while  he repositioned Lagos State Emergency Agency, LASEMA. The Agency now operates via 4 centres.

The administration recruited 1,300 teachers  into primary education system; and provided free medical services and psychosocial therapy to 700 survivors of domestic and sexual violence while a sum of 500 million Naira in Grants was presented  to 275 Community Development Associations to complete various self-help projects. The  N25 billion Lagos State Employment Trust Fund was established and this has affected many lives positively.  The  Ready-Set-Work is an entrepreneurial and employability training programme aimed at ensuring that every student who graduates from any tertiary institution in Lagos has knowledge, skills, and attitude required to gain employment upon graduation.

Ambode Upgraded 14 flagship Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs); Provided 20 Mobile Care Unit ambulances and 26 Transport Ambulances across the State. Public schools in Lagos State were renovated while the Lagos State University was completely transformed in terms of physical structures and equipping the buildings with furniture and modern  medical equipment in case of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital. As a result,  Lagos State University was rated as the best state university in year 2016.

On investment drive, Ambode established Office of Overseas Affairs and Investment to promote and coordinate investments in Lagos State. On agriculture, he developed the Strategic Plan for Accelerated Agricultural Growth (SPAAG), and set aside 50,000 acres of land for agriculture in the State. The Ambode administration collaborated with Kebbi State to produce the popular LAKE (Lagos-Kebbi) Rice.

The landmark Lagos State Electric Power Sector Reform was signed into law, to guarantee 24-hour power supply. Ambode has expanded the revenue base of Lagos from N22billion naira he met it in 2015 to  N34 billion Naira monthly in 2019 which has made Lagos State the envy of other states. Needless to say that he did all these without taking foreign loan.

These are some of Ambodes achievements in the last four years as space would not permit to mention numerous others. The point remains that Ambode is not only a visionary leader, but a man of  action who wasted no time in transforming his visions into reality. I will end this piece by admonishing Ambode to reflect on the wise saying of Sivananda Saraswati  who said, “There is something good in all seeming failures. You are not to see that now. Time will reveal it. Be patient.” Ambode should learn from the travails of Ekiti State Governor,  Kayode Fayemi and be happy in the belief that, nature has a way of rewarding hard work and redressing injustice.
