Ambrose wants more Grade A matches

Super Eagles right-back Efe Ambrose has urged his Nigeria team-mates to take their club matches seriously and always give their best in matches so that they could take the club form to Brazil 2014 World Cup.

In a chat with SportingLife, the Celtic FC defender reasoned that since most of the Super Eagles regular players are based in Europe, the players won’t have the luxury of camping for a long period for the 2014 Mundial.

“There is no way we could camp for two months or more for the World Cup. We need to comply with the period stipulated by FIFA for camping for a big tournament like this. So, my thinking is that we the players should go back to our various clubs and work very hard and also ensure we play regularly week in, week out.

“This is the only way we can maintain a good form and when we finally hit camp for the World Cup preparations it won’t be too difficult to blend together and get set for the World Cup battle,” Ambrose explained.

The defender also warned that the present squad of the Eagles are God-chosen, a reason why they have been winning matches.

“One good thing about the Eagles is that the team is built around God. We put God first in everything we do in the team. We dine, play, talk of training; we always put God first and we love ourselves too. So God has been so good to this team.

“Remember what happened at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations? It was after we had been written off by everybody, God lifted us up in South Africa and we eventually became African Champions.

“I foresee a repeat of this in Brazil. This present squad are so talented individually and we love each other which also reflects on the way we play for each other on the pitch. If we continue this way at the World Cup we will surprise the whole world,” the Celtic defender disclosed.

He also clamour for more grade A friendly matches to help in keeping the players in top shape.

“The Italy match was good psychologically and technically too. I pray that we get more of these tough opponents to prepare ourselves for the World Cup”, he told SportingLife.

    Ambrose prays for good weather

Super Eagles’ right-back, Efe Ambrose has called on God to grant his team good weather in today’s make-or-mar second leg, final play-off of the 2014 World Cup holding at the U.J. Esuene Stadium, Calabar. “I won’t deceive you, the weather in Calabar this time around is a little bit harsh and makes us a little bit uncomfortable. Everybody is feeling the harsh weather here, but we don’t have any room for complaints because the job has to be done tomorrow (today). By the special grace of God we will beat Ethiopia again (today). “Although we pray for friendly weather, it is too late for the weather or any obstacle to stop us from qualifying for the World Cup. The sprit in camp is very high and we are already thinking of how we are going to make Nigeria proud in Brazil. “We were in the last edition in South Africa and this time around as African Champions we want to better the result we achieved in the 2010 Mundial”, the Celtic of Scotland defender told SportingLife yesterday. He, however, solicited for support from all football stakeholders in the country for the Eagles to pick the World Cup ticket. “As usual we are soliciting for support and prayers from soccer-loving Nigerians because they say united we stand, divided we fall. “I believe with the support of everybody we will crush Ethiopia and zoom into the finals of the 2014 World Cup slated for Brazil”, Ambrose assured.

CARELESS DRIVING: Ambrose faces court in Scotland

Super Eagles and Celtic defender Efe Ambrose is to stand trial in Scotland next month for careless driving.

The 25-year-old has been charged with driving “without care and attention or without reasonable consideration for other persons using the road”.

He is alleged to have driven at excessive speed, braked sharply and repeatedly overtaken other cars on the Clydeside Expressway on December 18 last year.

The Nigeria defender denied the charge and will stand trial at Glasgow’s Justice of the Peace court next month.

Ambrose signs new four-year deal with Celtic

Celtic defender Efe Ambrose has agreed a new four-year contract with the Scottish champions.

The 24-year-old Nigeria international arrived in Glasgow in August 2012 after joining for an undisclosed fee from Israeli club Ashdod.

“He’s already an important player for us,” said Celtic manager Neil Lennon. “Efe has been fantastic and he’s low maintenance in terms of injuries.

“He’s got terrific pace, terrific athleticism and he’s improving.”

An Africa Cup of Nations winner this year, Ambrose is now tied to the Glasgow club until the summer of 2017.

“He gives us an extra dimension in the way we play,” added Lennon.

“When teams are camped in, he’s not afraid to bring the ball out from the back and take a risk now and again.

“I don’t want to discourage that because he’s becoming consistently good at it.”

Ambrose has scored once this season, in the Champions League qualifier at home to Cliftonville, and is enjoying his time in Scotland.

“Celtic are a massive club, one of the biggest in Europe, and the history behind the club is great,” he said.

“I still believe I have a long way to go. But this deal shows how committed to the club I am.

“I feel at home here, my family is settled and that is important to me.”

Ambrose doubtful for Celtic’s league clash

The FIFA international window is taking its toll on some European Clubs; one of which is Celtic FC of Scotland, who on Friday hinted that Super Eagles defender Efe Ambrose and some of his teammates returning from national team duties might not be available for the trip to face Aberdeen.

Manager Neil Lennon did not hide his resentment of the FIFA arrangement that binds clubs to release players on this free window dates for national team duties.

Lennon said the latest round of international fixtures had arrived at the wrong moment for Celtic. “We only got a few (players) back today,” said the manager on Celtic’s official site. “International week is always difficult for us but we will assess how they are. They look in good spirits, the majority of them. Some of them will come back full of the joys of spring and some will come back disappointed, but it´s great to see them all together again.

“Derk we are hoping will be fit for Tuesday, along with Virgil. Amido is a bit of a doubt for tomorrow as is Stokes, Forrest, Brown, Rogic, Lustig and Ambrose, while Fisher is out,” the coach stated at Friday’s pre-match press parley.

Meanwhile, in the background, the Hoops boss and the backroom staff are working hard on adding new signings to the squad.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE QUALIFIER: Celtic recall Ambrose from holiday

    •Says Nigerian in super shape

Celtic Manager, Neil  Lennon is banking on Super Eagles defender to ginger the side to achieve a good result today against Cliftonville in the Champions league qualifier

The Irish coach had originally approved extra rest for Ambrose after his return from the Confederation Cup in Brazil, but injuries to defenders Adam Matthews, Charlie Mulgrew and Virgil van Dijk has forced him to recall the Nigerian to checkmate Cliftonville

Although Celtic recently signed Steven Mouyokolo he is not likely to be available until the Champions League qualifying round second leg next week. Lennon admitted that he called upon the services of Ambrose earlier than expected for Wednesday’s first-leg clash.

“Efe Ambrose is in contention,” said the Northern Irishman, who has also seen Victor Wanyama leave for Southampton.

“He looks great, he looks in good condition. These guys play almost 12 months a year. He has had a couple of weeks off.

“He had a heavy schedule with the Confederations Cup, had a holiday, did a little bit of training in Nigeria and then joined us and he looks fine.

“It probably would have been ideal for him to do a little bit of conditioning, but looking at him on Monday, he looks fine.”

Lenon said though some of the players may not perform a 100% because of fatigue, it is important that that the side rise to the occasion because of the importance of the tie and the challenge that will be posed by a motivated opponent.

“Cliftonville will be highly motivated but the Champions League is so important to us as well.

“It is our first competitive game, we have only been back two and a half weeks and some players less than that, so it is a big task but that is the reality. “he added

  • FIFA CONFEDERATIONS CUP: Efe Ambrose: A dream come true

FIFA CONFEDERATIONS CUP: Efe Ambrose: A dream come true

•Says, this is my best season ever

NO MATTER what happens at the FIFA Confederations Cup, Efe Ambrose will look back on this season as the best of his career. And no wonder. It has, after all, been something of a fairy tale year for the 24-year-old centre-half, who has scaled dramatic new heights with both club and country.

The highlight, of course, was winning the CAF Africa Cup of Nations in February and ending Nigeria’s 17-year wait for a major trophy. Ambrose was an ever-present during that triumphant campaign and so impressive were his performances that he earned a place in CAF’s team of the tournament.

Yet it has also been a momentous season in his club career, encompassing a move to Scottish giants Celtic and the capturing of his first silverware since relocating to Europe in 2010. Better still, the former Ashod defender enjoyed his first extended foray in the UEFA Champions League, qualifying for the last 16 at the expense of Benfica and Spartak Moscow. There was even an unforgettable victory over Barcelona en route and it is that shock result – allied to the Super Eagles’ unexpected triumph at the Cup of Nations – which leaves Ambrose believing that the surprises, and the success, can continue at Brazil 2013 in this interview with FIFA.com.

Efe, how would you describe your feelings about playing in the FIFA Confederations Cup?

I see it as a big opportunity. This is one of these tournaments you might get the chance to play in only once in your lifetime, so I am very excited. It is a dream come true really. To be playing in a great football country like Brazil, in a Confederations Cup – it is the kind of thing you dream of when you first start playing football. It is a huge achievement for me and also for this team and my country. This tournament is special because we know we are representing the whole of Africa, and that gives us extra responsibility but extra pleasure too. And we deserve to be here. We showed at the Cup of Nations that our teamwork and our ability is deserving of that trophy. Now we want to make sure that we represent not only Nigeria but Africa in a good manner against the best teams in the world.

Was that Cup of Nations success all the more satisfying as you had not been among the pre-tournament favourites?

It’s true that we were not the favourites but I think football has changed a lot in recent years and those kind of things are not so important anymore. At every tournament you will have a team that has the best players, but it is important to remember too that aspects like teamwork, determination, unity and physical preparation count for a lot. No-one gave us a chance at the Cup of Nations because they thought we were too inexperienced, but we knew that we could do great things if we stuck together.

You now approach another tournament in which few expect Nigeria to go all the way. Can you cause an upset again?

I think so. I’m not saying we will win the Confederations Cup but we believe in ourselves, we trust in God, and with the right attitude I am sure we will have a great tournament. When you have the right ingredients, nothing is impossible. That’s the way I feel about this tournament.

Are Nigeria realistic contenders to win the trophy?

As I say, nothing is impossible. You have to believe.

First up, of course, is your opening match against Tahiti. I imagine that you will see three points from this one as a necessity if you are to go through?

That is the way I see it, yes. The most important thing of all for us is to focus on this match. It is a match we know we need to win and, to do that, we need to be fully concentrated. We cannot afford to take any chances. Big shocks have happened before in these kind of tournaments and we don’t want to be the victims this time. We know we need to get the three points to give ourselves a good chance of qualifying for the next stage.

Your group also includes the European and world champions, Spain. In facing such a team, will you take confidence from your experience with Celtic this season, beating Barcelona in the Champions League?

I think that game was a lesson for everyone. It proved exactly what I said about football being all about teamwork and playing together as one. No-one gave us a chance against a team with Messi, Iniesta, Xavi and all the rest. Barcelona are special, and so are Spain. But Celtic proved it can be done; that these teams can be beaten. If Nigeria can do the same – play as a team, stay united – we have a chance in any match we play. We are the best team in Africa and I think there is no reason for us to fear anyone.

    Ambrose wins Scottish Cup

SUPER Eagles defender, Efe Ambrose won his second silverware of the as Celtic completed the domestic double by beating Hibernian 3-0 in the Scottish Cup final at Hampden

    Park.

The Nigerian who played in the closing 9 minutes of the game

watched from the bench as his team hit the front early on when Gary Hooper volleyed home, before a fine header from the Englishman doubled his side’s lead, soon after the half-hour.

Any lingering hopes that Pat Fenlon’s men had of forcing extra time disappeared with a little over 10 minutes remaining, as Joe Ledley powered in a left-footed strike.

Hibs came close to breaking the deadlock through Eoin Doyle, but his header was superbly saved by Fraser Foster.

Almost immediately, the underdogs fell behind. Alan Maybury’s poor clearance gifted possession to Anthony Stokes, who

crossed from the left. The ball evaded the reach of goalkeeper Ben Williams and, as two Hibs defenders looked on, Hooper slotted home from a difficult angle.

Celtic created further opportunities before Hooper made it 2-0, rising highest to score with an excellent header. Stokes was again the provider with another fine cross.

The Bhoys were happy to keep it tight for much of the second period before Hooper almost completed a hat-trick, failing to

make decent contact after being set-up by Mikael Lustig.
