“The first one was held in Lagos. Any meaningful assessment must be situated within the right context.

“We campaigned on three broad areas, corruption, revamp the economy and security. Have we met our targets? If you ask me, I will say we are on track.

“When we came in, many local governments in the north-east were under the control of Boko Haram. They hoisted their flags, they were even collecting taxes, but today not even a single local government is under the control of Boko Haram.

“We have been able to liberate 16,000 captors from the enclave of Boko Haram.”

‘‘Though Nigeria has faced the challenges of ethno-religious violence, armed robbery, cattle rustling, kidnapping for ransom, militancy and violent agitations, the most daunting security challenge faced by the country when we assumed office on 29 May 2015 was the Boko Haram insurgency.

‘‘The Administration is also tackling other security problems with the same decisiveness, whether is it cattle rustling, herdsmen/farmers’ clash, militancy and regional agitations. We are not only desirous of communicating to Nigerians, we are actually taking practical steps to address issues.’’

FG set to partner Chad on Lake Chad Basin

The Federal Government has said it is ready to partner Chad Republic to restore the Lake Chad basin.

Environment Minister, Amina Mohammed disclosed during a briefing Tuesday in Abuja.

She said the decision would revive agriculture and restore peace in the area.

‎Mohammed said, “We have shown that we are willing to work with our neighbours, such as those in the Lake Chad basin to restore the once fertile land and well stocked fisheries so that peace and security can return”

The Minister said that Nigeria has also shown that she values international partnerships and that the discussions she has held with representatives from the World Bank, African Development Bank and a range of bi-lateral partners in the last two weeks will pave the way to substantial new funds accruing to Nigeria in the coming years to support our climate plans.

However, she cautioned that to deliver an agenda for change, the nation’s climate plans must align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) so that we can have a more ambitious, robust and effective approach that tackles inequality and addresses the challenges of climate change.

By building on the agreement coming out of the COP 21 process, she said “we can look forward to a healthier, wealthier and brighter future for all Africans”

The Minister further stated that the Paris agreement has created a veritable global platform for President Buhari’s bold change agenda which focuses on a new roadmap with emphasis on green and inclusive growth at its heart.

According to the minister, Nigeria’s ambitious INDCs, aim at reducing emissions by 20 per cent by the year 2030 with support from the international community.

This she affirmed can also act as a catalyst to achieving economic diversification, adding that this will support the restructuring of the economy in a way that will facilitate inclusive growth with vast opportunities.

  • Foreign investors besiege Nigeria at climate talks

Foreign investors besiege Nigeria at climate talks

The determination of President Muhammadu Buhari to put square pegs in square holes in his ministerial appointments may have paid off as Nigeria emerges the sought after bride at the ongoing climate change negotiations in Paris, France.

Contrary to the undesirable and unenviable position of Nigeria in previous climate change talks, Nigeria has emerged  as the leading negotiator for Africa and a much sought after party for other countries. This change it was learnt has to do with the international clout of the Minister for the Environment, Amina Mohammed.

Prior to her appointment, Mohammed has been a special adviser to the United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki-Moon on the Millennium Development Goal and a well-respected figure in the international community of social and development work.

Unlike in the last two climate change conferences where no pavilion or offices were allotted to the country, Nigeria has a strategic office in Paris, a situation which registered her seriousness and announced her return to the international community.

Also, a steady stream of international companies and governments of developed nations wishing to do business with Nigeria have been trooping into the Nigerian pavilion to talk with the minister. The Nation observed at least six different delegations which visited the Minister on Saturday to discuss bilateral issues with a view to investing in the country.

According to a source, who was knowledgeable about the visits, Nigeria has announced her strong arrival in the committee of nations to be taken seriously by the way the country has conducted herself at the climate talks.

“ They see we are serious, gone are the days when Nigeria would have no office and the officials would only be roaming around. Now we are serious and the international community has noticed. All these people are coming because they want to come into Nigeria, the clout and integrity of our Minister also counts because the international community would only do business with someone they know and trust and she is one,” the source said.

Nigeria also has a lean delegation with only about 40 officials sponsored to the climate talks, it was learnt that only those who are essential to the meeting were sponsored to Paris. It was also observed that the officials have conducted themselves in a respectable manner, promptly attending to visitors in a business-like but friendly manner, a situation which was almost unheard of.

“Things have changed as you can see, this is no longer a market place where officials would be laughing and joking without doing the work. Now Nigeria is open for business and we have registered our presence to the world in a big way,” a source said.
