  • Plateau killings: 13 suspects in custody – Police

    At least 13 suspects have been arrested for their alleged involvement in killings in some communities in Plateau State.

    The suspects arrested include Biliaminu Abdullahi, Samaila Saleh, Muhammadu Kabiru, Aminu Mohammed,  Alhassan Saidu,  Abubakar Adam, Gazali Isah, Hamza Inusa  Yahuza Yau, Dahiru Ahmed and Friday Musa.

    The police, however, withheld names of two other suspects.

    Exhibits recovered from them include five AK47 rifles and two live cartridges

    Giving an update into the killings in Abuja yesterday, the Force Spokesman, Jimoh Moshood, said the relocation of the DIG in charge of operations and others has yielded positive results.

    The police spokesman also said security situation has improved in the affected communities.

    He said: “It would be recalled that the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, visited Plateau State on the 26th June, 2018. While in the state, he assessed the security situation and police deployment.

    “Since his visit, the security situation has improved, peace and normalcy has been restored in the affected areas in the state.

    “The Police Special Investigation Team, comprising the Intelligence Response Team ( IRT), Special Tactical Squad (STS) and Technical Intelligence Unit (TIU) led by Commissioner of Police, IGP Monitoring Unit deployed to Plateau State have commenced investigation and recorded significant progress in getting to the root of the killings of innocent people.”

    He also said the suspects are assisting the police team with useful information in the further investigation into the incident.

    Man jailed two months for stealing bicycle

    A Minna Magistrates’ Court on Friday sentenced a 19-year-old man, Aminu Mohammed, to two months imprisonment for stealing a bicycle.

    Mohammed was arraigned on a two-count charge of criminal trespass and theft, contrary to Sections 343 and 287 of the Penal Code.

    The police prosecutor, Insp. Emmanuel Danladi, had told the court that one Ibrahim Aminu of Kpakungu reported the matter to the police on August 20.

    Danladi said the complainant alleged that Mohammed, a resident of Mokwa, entered his compound and stole a black sport bicycle, one white kaftan and a telephone handset.

    He said the convict was arrested with the help of the complainant’s neighbour, adding that the stolen items were recovered from him.

    Mohammed pleaded guilty and begged the court for leniency.

    Consequently, the prosecutor prayed the court to try him summarily in line with Section 157 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

    Magistrate Mariam Kings sentenced Mohammed to two months in jail with an option of N20, 000 fine.

  • FG collaborates with World Bank, AfDB to construct roads in Kano

    The Federal Government, in collaboration with the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the World Bank is to construct 700 kilometers of rural roads in Kano State.

    Mr Ubandoma Umarama, the National Coordinator, Federal Projects Monitoring Unit, disclosed this at a one-day stakeholders’ workshop in Kano on Monday.

    News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the workshop is on identification of intervention areas and selection of high priority rural roads for the ADB/World Bank-funded RAMP III in Kano State.

    Umarama, who was represented by Mr Aminu Mohammed, said the project was an initiative of the federal government, which when completed would address the challenges being faced by rural communities in terms of access roads.

    According to him, no fewer than seven states are currently benefitting from the initiative which is being funded by the World Bank and the African Development Bank (ADB).

    The current benefitting states, the national coordinator said, include: Adamawa, Cross River, Enugu, Imo, Kaduna and Osun.

    “The federal government is playing an intermediary role in the projects which is expected to enhance socio-economic activities of the benefitting communities,’’ he said.

    In his remarks, Gov Abdullahi Ganduje said the project was in line with his administration’s commitment to improve the socio-economic activities of rural dwellers.

    He said the state had recently awarded contract for the construction of 500 kilometers of rural roads across the 44 local government areas of the state.

    Ganduje said this was as part of efforts to open the rural areas for economic development.

    “Rural infrastructural development is aimed at lifting the living standard of rural dwellers, hence our decision to provide the roads for easy access to these areas.

    “These projects, when completed, would not only link the areas to the local and state headquarters, but would also enable rural farmers to transport their farm produce to various markets in the state,’’ the governor said.

    Alhaji Usman Ririwai, the state Commissioner for Water Resources and Rural Development, commended the federal government for the initiative.

    Ririwai said that many communities in the state had suffered a lot due to lack of access roads.

    NAN reports that the workshop was attended by representatives of associations, village and ward heads, among others.

  • Ganduje appoints new SSG, seven perm secs

    Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, has appointed Usman Alhaji Usman, as the Secretary to the State Government (SSG).

    Usman replaces Dr. Rabi’u Bichi, who was removed by the governor.

    Kano State Head of Service, Alhaji Muhammad Na’iya , announced the new appointments in a statement released on Saturday.

    According to the statement, Ganduje also approved the appointment of seven new permanent secretaries.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the new permanent secretaries are – Halilu Baba-Dantiye, Alhaji Usman Bala, Hajiya Bilkisu Waziri, Dr. Saadatu Bala,  Danladi Garba, Aminu Mohammed, and Aliyu Sani.

    The governor also approved the immediate redeployment of six permanent secretaries to other ministries.
