  • NYPF pays tribute to late Shehu Shagari, hails Tambuwal

The Nigerian Young Professionals Forum, NYPF, on Wednesday paid a condolence visit to the family of the late former president of Nigeria, Alhaji Shehu Shagari to commiserate with them over the passing of the elder statesman.

The Forum led by its chairman Moses Siloko Siasia, also visited the executive governor of Sokoto state, His Excellency Bar. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal at the Government House Sokoto to commiserate with him and the entire people of the state on the death of Shagari who was Nigeria’s second republic president.

Describing him as an embodiment of great virtues and democratic ethos, the Chairman NYPF, Moses Siloko Siasia who spoke on behalf of the Forum extolled the character and good qualities, as well as the great achievements and legendary contributions made by the late former president Alhaji Shehu Shagari while calling on all political leaders in Nigeria to emulate the candor and simplicity of the late former president.

According to the forum, former president Shehu Shagari is an epitome of integrity, excellence in public service, a courageous leader and a representation of who and what a public servant should be. They said he would be remembered for leading Nigeria on the part of progress and stability.

Speaking on the outstanding qualities possessed by the late leader, Siasia said: “Alhaji Shehu Shagari represents the core ideas that the NYPF are advocating for, he represents the ideals of peace, by governance and democratic freedom built on the cardinal principles of national unity, development, and inclusiveness”.

Siasia went further to tell the Shagari family to continue to take solace in the fact that the impact the late president’s life had on Nigeria has lifted the country up in many ways, saying “the Man who truly embodies Integrity is the late Shehu Shagari and not the one claiming it now. Former president Shehu Shagari’s legacies will continue to live on as a man who was truly detribalized”.

The Forum was received by Alhaji Bala M. Shagari (Sarkin Mafaran Shagari) who spoke on behalf of the Shagari family. He challenged the forum to hold close the teachings and learn from the lifestyle of the late president Shehu Shagari. The family appreciated the NYPF for coming on the condolence visit with a set of refined young Nigerians who represent the future and hope of the country and further challenged them of their role to reshape Nigeria

Siasia also expressed appreciation for the warm reception and hospitality of Governor Aminu Tambuwal and the great people of Sokoto state who he described as very caring and loving.

He commended the outstanding performance of the Tambuwal administration, which according to him, has empowered young people through Skills Acquisition Programmes and also created an inclusive platform for young people to participate in governance, which is central to the governor’s development agenda.

On his part, Governor Tambuwal appreciated the forum for reaching out and identifying with the people of Sokoto state on the loss of a great leader and father.

The Governor emphasized on the humility and simplicity of the late former president, Alhaji Shehu Shagari, who upon retirement still volunteered his time to serve in different directorates including the Director for Rural and Urban Development.

Tambuwal charged members of NYPF to take the necessary action by getting involved in governance as, according to the governor, only by active participation in governance and politics can they create the needed inclusive government that will put the interest of young people into consideration.

Other members of the forum who were part of the visit included the Executive Secretary of NYPF, Kadiliura C. Samuel, Executive Member, Najibullah Tafeda, Sokoto State Coordinator of NYPF, Muazu Muhammad and other Sokoto State chapter executive members of the NYPF.

The governor, who also expressed concerns over what he described an emerging situation on federal government’s attempt to arraign the Chief Justice of the Federation, Justice Walter Onnoghen for false asset declaration.

According to him: “PDP is set to actualise a rebirth of a new Sokoto state and Nigeria with full opportunities for all.

  • PDP lied over ‘purported’ APC members defection in Ondo

The Ondo state Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Wednesday faulted the claim by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP)  that it received about 10,000 of its members in Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State.

It described the notion as porous and cheap propaganda, stressing that the claim had helped to amplify what has already been known that the party has no regards for figures, besides it’s inelastic capacity for distortion of glaring facts.

A statement by the party’s spokesman, Alex Kalejaye said “The APC in Ondo State wishes to place on records that a fraction of those who followed Chief Olusola Oke to the party early this year actually returned to where they always belong. They were less than 50 in number.

“The ruling party deeply appreciates the courage and will of the bulk of the group for believing in the APC, and resisting the indescribable efforts aimed at inducing them financially.

“What happened in Okitipupa was a political jamboree by the Ondo State PDP, designed to justify the huge financial investment of its national leaders, who stormed Akure, the Ondo State capital last Thursday, and led by Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State.

“It was therefore necessary for the State chapter to rent some idle youths that have no electoral values to present a seemingly huge crowd for further patronage.

The  statement stressed that Ondo APC was unperturbed about the hollow and rootless antics that will expire in February.

It said “We remain committed to our determination to deliver the State for our party during the general elections.

The party will continue to work for the good people of Ondo State and and showcase what we have been able to do, even at the national level, rather than orchestrated propaganda.

“This government has no place for deception and empty promises that will not improve the living conditions and welfare of the people.

The statement assured the citizenry that the present Akeredolu’s government would implement all the projects intended, and flagged off, while payment of workers’ salaries and wages would be sustained.

  • Tambuwal, Makarfi pledge support for Atiku

Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal and former Kaduna State Governor, Ahmed Makarfi have pledged their full support for the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.
Tambuwal and Makarfi were two of the aspirants that contested and lost the PDP presidential ticket to Atiku at the party’s recent presidential primaries in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The two politicians gave the commitment yesterday when the Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson led two other PDP governors to the Abuja homes of Tambuwal and Makarfi for consultations.

Speaking with newsmen shortly after a closed door meeting with the Dickson team, Tambuwal stressed the need for PDP to remain a strong united party, adding that the emphasis should be on the country and not personal ambition.

Tambuwal who observed that the country was being run by proxy said that Nigeria needed a president who would deliver effective governance.

The Sokoto Governor added that he was resolute in his decision to give his total support to Atiku in pursuit of victory for the PDP in the 2019 general elections.

On his part, Makarfi said although the 12 aspirants went into the primary election as contestants, the emergence of one of them was a collective victory for party.

Makarfi said he had a long standing political relationship with Atiku spanning many years and it that it was too late in the day for him to jettison that relationship over presidential primaries.

He predicted a resounding victory for the PDP in the 2019 elections both at the federal and state elections.

Governor Dickson together with Governors Ifeanyi Okowa (Delta) and Darius Ishaku (Taraba) hailed Tambuwal and Makarfi for their understanding and spirit of sportsmanship.

Dickson, who led the team, described Tambuwal and Makarfi as frontline politicians qualified enough to fly the party’s presidential flag.

Dickson, on behalf of other PDP Governors, commended the two former aspirants for displaying maturity before, during and after the presidential primaries.

The Bayelsa governor said the visit to the two politicians was part of the decision of the PDP to visit and interact with other presidential aspirants that lost the primaries, with a view to encouraging them as leaders of the party in their own rights.

Dickson who heads the Standing Committee on Reconciliation of the PDP, said that the party had commenced series of consultative talks with other categories of aspirants and leaders of the party in the bid to present a united front.

He stressed that the meeting with two former aspirants was borne out of the need to strengthen the PDP, to provide the requisite support for the candidate of the party for electoral victory.

Dickson said, “I am leading a team of the committee of governors to interact and compare notes with our brothers, Governor Aminu Tambuwal and Senator Ahmed Makarfi.

“They ran a great race and we are all proud of what they did and what they continue to do. We appreciate their statesmanship, we appreciate the way and manner they have been of help in consolidating the gains the party is making.

“This afternoon, as part of our decision to go round, visit, encourage and interact with all our party leaders, especially all those who indicated interest in the last presidential elections, we have held fruitful meetings.

“This is just the beginning of several interactions formally and informally that we are going to have with them and with several other leaders of our party.

“As you all know, they are very key players in the unfolding political scenario and we are all committed to reclaiming our country and building a new Nigeria”.

Dickson stressed the need for leaders of the PDP to close ranks and to hold regular talks as opposition politicians to reposition the PDP for electoral victory.

The Bayelsa Governor noted that as the nation moved towards the next election, the Indepedent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the security agencies had a responsibility to ensure the conduct of free, fair and credible elections in the country.

He urged INEC and the security agencies to be fair, adhere strictly to the rule of law, and to respect the rights of individuals in the next elections.

  • Wike, Fayose and PDP convention

WEEKS before the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) convention was held in Port Harcourt last Saturday, few party members and analysts were sure who would win. There was talk of an Aminu Tambuwal victory, and there were also feelings victory could swing in the direction of either Rabiu Kwankwaso or Bukola Saraki. But some key party leaders and critical stakeholders who knew a thing or two about political permutations and the dynamics of presidential nominations believed former vice president Atiku Abubakar would be best placed to win and not let the victory go to waste. In the end, the former vice president took the nomination and is set to run with it. But, beyond the nomination, something else quaked through the convention and attracted the attention of party elders and members, something that had to do with the influence peddling of Nyesom Wike and Ayo Fayose, governors of Rivers and Ekiti States.

Both governors had for some years exercised what some long-suffering members describe as overbearing influence on the party. That influence, it turned out, had not always borne good fruits, but the two governors nevertheless wielded it relentlessly and remorselessly. They backed the Sokoto State governor, Mallam Tambuwal, for the nomination, but he lost. They have not taken the loss tamely; instead they seem even set on fomenting terrible distractions in the oncoming presidential contest between their party’s candidate and the ruling party’s candidate, President Muhammadu Buhari. All the PDP contestants have congratulated the winner, but the two disconsolate governors have continued to sulk and cry more than the bereaved.

Shortly before the convention was held, there was talk of holding it elsewhere other than Port Harcourt, the initial choice of a cash-strapped party looking for a state with enough financial muscle to underwrite the expenses. Those campaigning for a new venue were thought to be worried that Mr Wike was bent on foisting a candidate on the party, preferably Mallam Tambuwal. To that end, Mr Wike apparently secured the support of Mr Fayose, but party elders were uncomfortable with the thought of embracing an oligarchy within the party whose ideas and yokes they would find difficult to throw off. However, suspecting their agenda and describing party leaders as ungrateful, an incensed Mr Wike threatened to torpedo the party’s plans should the venue be changed.

His statement bristled with venom. According to him, “Nobody should dare Rivers State any longer. Enough is enough. PDP should know that we are not a punching bag. We are not a people you can use and push. We are not harlots — whenever you want, you come, when you finish, you push us aside.” This was emotional bilge, but it seemed to work. Not only did party leaders frightened about fracturing the party shortly before the convention reverse themselves, they also chose to be sanguine about the whole convention. Perhaps they had a joker in their hands, a joker they intended to unleash with all elegance and indescribable sang-froid. In the end, the convention went on far better and calmer than party elders dared hope; but Mallam Tambuwal, the candidate of Governors Wike and Fayose, was beaten fair and square, by a galling margin properly described as provocative and humourless.

Numbed by the rejection their candidate suffered, and perhaps unaware they were exuding unbearable arrogance, Mr Fayose, speaking the mind of Mr Wike, chafed in muted criticism at the victory of the former vice president. Said he: “We have no regret aligning with Governor (Nyesom) Wike to support Governor Tambuwal for the presidential ticket, and no apologies either. We kept the party alive and strong when most men became ladies. We never compromised. If any group feels it can do it alone, we will see how far they can go. I may renounce my membership of the party if the need arises. In the meantime, myself and others will continue with our consultations while watching the turn of events. We cannot but appreciate leaders that have intervened so far, but this release became necessary to avoid fresh crisis or misrepresentation.”

Both Messrs Wike and Fayose could clearly not hide their disenchantment, if not resentment. By insisting the convention be held in Port Harcourt, it was obvious Mr Wike felt a sense of entitlement as he expected to be rewarded for, as he and Mr Fayose put it, saving the party in its hour of need. In any case, the Ekiti governor did not mince word. He directly indicated that he and Mr Wike ought to be rewarded for holding the party erect after the 2015 electoral loss that threatened to obliterate it and castrate its leadership. It became clear to party elders that, given the manoeuvres of the two governors, their objective was not as a matter of fact altruistic. They saved the party, it has turned out, because they wished to hold it in thrall to their political calculations and goals. But did they really save the party?

It is true that after the 2015 electoral debacle party leaders were dispirited and inconsolable, and their anguished national chairman at the time, citing extenuating reasons, had to step aside. At a time few party elders were willing to carry the burden of the shell-shocked party, Messrs Wike and Fayose grandly but a little grossly stepped in. But rather than being saviours, some party elders alleged, the two governors acted as opportunists eager to claim a seemingly forlorn party they could remould according to their amorphous and obnoxious worldview. But in their eagerness and feistiness, instead of joining hands with others and viewing with dispassion the whole exercise of resuscitating and remaking the party scientifically, they foisted the itinerant opportunist, former Borno State governor, Ali Modu Sheriff, on the PDP. The pugnacious Mallam Sheriff wasted no time in wreaking havoc on the party and riding roughshod over its principles and traditions. The Borno politician, a redoubtable political nomad himself, is now back in the APC after crisscrossing about two or three more parties. It took many lawsuits to extricate the party from the stranglehold of the ambitious and imposing Mallam Sheriff.

While the PDP convention was still in progress in Port Harcourt on Sunday morning, and sensing that his candidate had lost, Mr Wike abruptly left the stadium venue with his aides. His absolute lack of sportsmanship and respect for democratic values were matched in some ways only by the whining of Mr Fayose who threatened to defect from the party he claimed he and Mr Wike laboured to free from slavery and restore to life. It is evident now to the PDP that neither of the two governors who appointed themselves as saviours to the party is a democrat. Their candidate lost unequivocally, but they seem unmindful of the implications of destabilising a party they claim to love, or of openly demonstrating their lack of respect for democratic values, or of indicating to the whole world the puerility of their politics.

Mr Wike will of course have no choice but to reconcile with his party and party leaders. He will in addition work assiduously to bring about PDP victory at the presidential poll. If that victory is procured, it will make it far easier for him to keep Rivers in the ambit of the PDP. Moreover, his future and peace of mind against persecution and investigation rest on procuring that victory. Mr Fayose throws a tantrum; but even he will come round to rekindling his faith in the PDP. He will be leaving office in a few days. He is certain to be assailed by the ruling APC who have an axe to grind with him. They have not forgotten nor forgiven his vituperations against their leaders, and they are eager to exact their pound of flesh from him. Indeed, as the handover date draws near, they revel in that vengeful thought. Mr Fayose will, therefore, need a strong party to come to his aid, to champion his cause, to keep his tribulations in the public eye, and to give him the succour he will badly need in the months ahead. No, neither Mr Wike nor Mr Fayose has anywhere to go. They will stand pat in the PDP, and in addition work and pray for the victory of their candidate in 2019.

  • Fayose not wanted in our party, says Ekiti APC

PDP GROUP: FAYOSE SHOULD NOT TRADE OLUSOLA’S ‘MANDATE’ WITH APC

Less than twenty four hours after he threatened to leave the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State has said Governor Ayo Fayose is not wanted in its fold.

The state APC Chairman, Mr. Paul Omotoso and party chairmen in all wards in Irepodun/Ifelodun local government, where the governor hails from and all wards in Ado-Ekiti, where he lives and has businesses that he is not welcomed in the party.

The party chieftains have told the governor to forget his plans to dump PDP to join APC “until he clears himself of several criminal cases hanging on his neck.”

The warning came on the heels of reports that Fayose had concluded plans to dump PDP following the emergence of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the PDP presidential candidate as against Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal who was supported by Fayose.

In a statement on Tuesday by the APC Publicity Secretary, Mr. Ade Ajayi, said the party leaders advised the outgoing governor to conclude his court cases bordering on sundry alleged crimes before contemplating to join APC.

He said: “We want to prove to the world that APC will not provide sanctuary for criminal suspects, political prostitutes and lepers. We will never admit such character to this party and we advise Fayose to play his politics of destruction somewhere else.

“Fayose’s criminal prosecution on 2005 poultry project fraud resumes on November 4, 2018. Fayose cannot turn Ekiti APC to a haven and sanctuary for criminal suspects and we advise him to forget any plan to smear Ekiti APC with criminal records.”

In a statement, Omotoso told Fayose that APC “is a political party bounded by common ideals of integrity, openness, discipline and commitment to common goal of progressive governance, which Fayose does not possess or believe as can be seen from his style of politics and governance”.

He added: “Fayose over the years abused, disrespected and openly denigrated President Muhammadu Buhari, the leader of our party who is also the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces.

“Fayose is coming to destroy our party and ensure President Buhari does not get a second term in 2019 and we won’t allow Fayose’s evil plan to materialise”.

Omotoso vowed that on no account would Fayose be admitted into the APC.

He advised Fayose to look elsewhere for a political party that he will destroy after destroying three national political parties when he found it difficult to control the parties.

“Fayose said many times that he would destroy APC. He destroyed Labour Party (LP), All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP) People’s Progressive
Alliance (PPA) and at a time he also destroyed PDP before his current activities that led to the present sorry state of PDP in Ekiti State.

“APC is looking for builders and not destroyers in its fold. We will not accept this destroyer in our great party APC and we advise Fayose
to look elsewhere towards his promoters outside the state so that he can destroy the cohesion of the party in the backyards of those promoters.”

He warned all ward chairmen where Fayose lives and runs his businesses against accepting him to the party.

He added: “Our party is not a sanctuary for criminal suspects, political lepers and serial destroyers of the parties they once belonged.

“We hereby warn ward chairmen where Fayose lives or runs his business against admitting him to our great party.

“We hereby state clearly that no ward chairman must open talks with Fayose until such ward chairman clears with the party leadership at the state level.”

Meanwhile, an interest group in Ekiti PDP, Bring Back our Mandate (BBOM) has warned Fayose against negotiating what it called “the mandate given to Prof Kolapo Olusola by the Ekiti electorate with the ruling APC as a soft landing following his latest threat to leave the PDP.”

BBOM in a statement on Tuesday by its Coordinator, Gbenga Ogedengbe, said that the mandate given to Olusola by Ekiti PDP in the last governorship election in the state is not for sales and that the mandate of the people which he claimed was stolen by the APC will be retrieved at the election petition tribunal.

The statement read: “It is important to note that Fayose’s deputy, Prof. Kolapo Olusola Eleka, who doubled as the PDP candidate in July 18, 2018 Ekiti governorship election is currently seeking judicial redress at the Ekiti election petition tribunal holding in Abuja over series of alleged irregularities in the conduct of the poll which returned Dr Kayode Fayemi of the APC as the governor-elect.

“We are not unaware of Governor Ayodele Fayose romance with the APC and his several unrealistic demands with the aim of paving way for a make believe excuse that would enable him save his face while he goes by the way of Akpabio.

“Fayose is afraid of being persecuted by APC attack dogs after leaving office. While wishing the outgoing Ekiti governor a safe trip to APC we are warning APC to avoid being fooled by Fayose as any promise to stop or frustrate the ongoing tribunal by Fayose is simply an empty promise.

“Fayose cannot give what he doesn’t have. The process of retrieving Eleka’s mandate from APC is beyond Fayose. Fayose can’t sell or negotiate with what does not belong to him.”
