    • Tinubu felicitates former Sokoto gov at 60

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has disclosed why he and ex-President  Goodluck Jonathan opposed  Aminu Waziri Tambuwal’s emergence as Speaker of the House of Representatives in 2011.

Obasanjo made the disclosure at a leadership colloquium and 60th birthday celebration organised in honour of Tambuwal yesterday.

The former president, who chaired the event  said the opposition was based on party considerations and the desire to sustain gender inclusion in legislative leadership following the ruling party’s support for Mulikat Akande Adeola.

He said the thinking at the time was that since a woman had emerged as Speaker for the first time, she should be encouraged to continue in that role.

Tambuwal, then a second-term lawmaker from the North West, went on to defeat Akande Adeola from the South West, polling 252 votes against her 90 in the speakership contest.

Despite lacking the backing of the Jonathan administration, Tambuwal received support from opposition lawmakers, marking one of the rare moments in the Fourth Republic when the legislature openly asserted its independence against executive preference.

Obasanjo said the lawmakers exercised their constitutional rights and that both he and Jonathan ultimately respected the outcome, adding that one quality he noticed early in Tambuwal was humility, which he described as essential to genuine leadership.

Eulogising the  former Sokoto State  governor, Obasanjo said: “One thing I saw in you was humility. Greatness that does not include humility is greatness that is hollow. Your greatness is not hollow.”

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu also yesterday congratulated Tambuwal on his 60th birthday, commending his long years of service to Sokoto State and the nation.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President described Tambuwal as a prominent politician and lawyer whose public career has been marked by significant national responsibilities.

President Tinubu recalled Tambuwal’s tenure as Speaker of the House of Representatives between 2011 and 2015, noting that his leadership at the National Assembly coincided with a critical period in Nigeria’s democratic evolution.

The President also acknowledged Tambuwal’s eight years as Governor of Sokoto State from 2015 to 2023, during which he served two consecutive terms, contributing to governance and political development in the state.

According to the statement, President Tinubu highlighted Tambuwal’s dedication to nation-building and his sustained efforts toward the advancement of democracy in Nigeria, irrespective of party affiliation.

The President wished the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senator many more years in good health and expressed hope for an even brighter political future as he marks the milestone birthday.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan, who joined the event virtually, acknowledged that there were disagreements between the executive and the House during Tambuwal’s tenure but credited him with holding the chamber together.

Jonathan said Tambuwal enjoyed strong confidence from members of the House and demonstrated leadership strength despite political differences.

Former Senate President and National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), David Mark described Tambuwal as a dependable and disciplined leader whose political journey has earned him national respect beyond partisan boundaries

Mark, who served as Special Guest of Honour at the event said Tambuwal’s career reflected loyalty to democratic principles and selfless service to the nation

“For me, Senator Aminu Tambuwal is like a son He is humble dependable and trustworthy and his contributions to Nigeria’s democracy speak for themselves,” Mark said.

He recounted how Tambuwal and his deputy approached him ahead of the 2011 election, expressing confidence that they would emerge Speaker and Deputy Speaker regardless of party pressure.

Mark said he deliberately ignored pressure from party leaders on the eve of the election, noting that on that occasion he chose to defy expectations.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, described Tambuwal as a leader with national potential and urged him to live up to the expectations placed on him.

Also speaking former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi said attaining 60 offered an opportunity for reflection urging moderation and wisdom at that stage of life

Praising Tambuwal as a bridge builder committed to consensus, justice and national unity, he said, “I celebrate you and wish you well as you journey ahead. The sky is your limit.

Former Edo State governor and former APC National Chairman, Sen. Adams Oshiomhole commended Tambuwal’s ability to manage a politically divided House and recalled his personal compassion during a period of bereavement.

On her part, Tambuwal’s former rival in the speakership race, Mulikat Akande Adeola, dismissed any suggestion of lingering resentment, saying leadership outcomes were ultimately determined by destiny and that there was no animosity between them.

Former Ekiti State governor, Kayode Fayemi warned that democracy was under threat globally, citing coups and democratic breakdowns across Africa, and urged Nigeria to continue to protect legislative independence.

In his remarks, Tambuwal warned that Nigeria stands at a critical point in its history and requires honest leadership, responsible governance and national unity to avert a deeper crisis.

Tambuwal said the country had drifted dangerously away from the vision of its founding leaders and must urgently confront its governance failures to recover.

According to him, Nigeria’s present condition is far removed from the hopes that accompanied the return to democratic rule, noting that the situation should trouble not only citizens alive today but also those who laboured to build the nation.

He said the country had reached a point where denial was no longer an option and that meaningful progress could only begin with a sincere admission of what had gone wrong.

Tambuwal argued that rescuing Nigeria must rise above personal ambition, ethnic considerations and party interests, warning that political practices that weaken institutions and undermine democratic growth were part of the problem.

He said leadership should be about service to the people rather than personal gain, stressing that public office must not be treated as a pathway for self-enrichment or the imposition of unfit successors.

The former Speaker maintained that national renewal could not be left to political parties alone, adding that citizens must actively participate in demanding good governance and accountable leadership.

He said Nigerians had no alternative country to retreat to and must therefore commit to doing the right thing to ensure the emergence of leaders who are prepared to govern responsibly.

Tambuwal also declared his readiness to take greater personal risks in defence of democracy and national renewal, saying he was recommitting himself to working with Nigerians who share a belief in good governance and the need to turn the country around.

Tambuwal: I remain resolute, joining forces to reposition Nigeria

Former Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, yesterday declared his resolve to work with like-minded Nigerians to end what he described as the “era of misrule” in the country.

Tambuwal said his decision aligned with public opinion and reflected his commitment to repositioning the nation and correcting its wrongs.

“I remain one person who believes in democracy and good governance,” the former governor stated.

He explained that the coalition he had joined was based on consultations with professionals, political actors, and other stakeholders, all aimed at charting a better course for Nigeria.

“We came together based on our shared belief in what is good for Nigeria, working strictly within democratic principles and processes to flush out the Tinubu-led APC government,” he said.

Tambuwal spoke in Sokoto shortly after arriving at his residence on Kontagora Road, following his release on bail from the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). He was received by a jubilant crowd of supporters chanting political victory songs.

“There is no going back on my journey with like minds to salvage the country from the woes of the APC-led government,” he vowed.

“Tinubu’s administration has taken Nigerians to the trash — a government with no compassion, sympathy, or concern for citizens now battered by insecurity, poverty, and social underdevelopment.”

The former governor, who is currently a serving senator in the 10th National Assembly, stressed that the coalition movement was designed to restore accountability and good governance. “Nigerians are not fools. They believe in a democratic process that can change the government of the day, and that is exactly what this coalition stands for,” he said.

According to Tambuwal, some forces were uneasy about the coalition’s progress and had resorted to intimidation.

“These are the things the current government of Tinubu cannot handle.

“They are confused and dumbfounded. Before the 2023 elections, we warned Nigerians not to vote for Tinubu, and today, here we are,” he declared.

Tambuwal criticised the president’s policies, describing them as anti-people and devoid of humane consideration.

“Unfortunately, the 2023 election was rigged, and many wrongs — particularly in the application of the federal character principle and equitable distribution of national projects — have been orchestrated to affect all six geopolitical zones, all while insecurity, poverty, and other ills worsen,” he lamented.

He thanked his supporters in Sokoto and beyond for their steadfastness and prayers, acknowledging the resilience of key players in the coalition’s efforts.

  • Sokoto: A backward eye on Tambuwal’s misses

Sokoto: A backward eye on Tambuwal’s misses

    By Sai’du Sani

The most viral disease in Nigeria today isn’t cholera or Lassa fever—it’s selective amnesia. And it’s spreading fast, especially among political jobbers and self-styled defenders of failed legacies. This mental fog, often voluntary, is quickly becoming the bane of our national growth. It’s the only plausible explanation for why anyone, in good conscience, would draw a comparison between the failed administration of the former governor of Sokoto State, Rt. Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, and the fresh, yet promising leadership of his successor, Governor Ahmad Aliyu.

If you’re wondering what memories fuel such reckless comparisons, the answer is simple: sycophancy. Perhaps there are bootlickers and political hangers-on whispering in Tambuwal’s ear that his tenure is remembered fondly. Well, let me burst that bubble: we never had it worse in Sokoto than during Tambuwal’s eight-year reign. And that’s saying it mildly.

Tambuwal’s administration was a cocktail of missed opportunities, policy inconsistency, and deafening silence in the face of hardship. And the most damning of all: His complete and utter failure to resolve Sokoto’s perennial water scarcity problem. For eight straight years, clean water remained a luxury in the state capital and most rural communities. Yet, within months of assuming office, Governor Ahmad Aliyu rolled up his sleeves and tackled the crisis head-on. Today, taps are running in places that have gone dry for years. What Tambuwal could not do in eight years, Aliyu is resolving in record time. That alone should silence comparisons—but when you are dealing with shameless folks.

Tambuwal’s approach to governance was laced with arrogance and a shocking lack of accountability. For a man who rose through the ranks to become Speaker of the House of Representatives, one would expect a greater sense of duty and decorum. But at the end of his tenure, Tambuwal left no handover notes, no blueprint, no continuity plan—just chaos. That singular act of omission speaks volumes about his disregard for institutional memory and his successor. It was less of a transition and more of an ambush. In any serious political culture, this would be regarded as sabotage.

Under Tambuwal’s watch, Sokoto State’s finances were left in tatters. Over N14 billion in unpaid gratuities to retirees, and over N195 billion reportedly raked in from the sale of state-owned assets—with little or nothing to show for it. These are not accusations; they are documented realities. Tambuwal’s economic mismanagement is not just a blot on his legacy—it is a weight Governor Aliyu must now carry and correct. And to his credit, Aliyu has begun offsetting those liabilities without taking on a single new Kobo in debt. That is stewardship. That is leadership.

While Aliyu governs with frugality, empathy, and a clear sense of direction, Tambuwal cast shadows over Sokoto’s progress. His minions now roam social media, peddling narratives in his favour, desperate to rewrite history. Instead of showing gratitude to the man cleaning up his mess, Tambuwal appears more interested in waging a proxy war. It’s a dangerous game for a man who once wielded the gavel of the nation’s most powerful legislative chamber. But the Speaker’s chair is long gone, and so too is the illusion of his invincibility.

Let’s talk about infrastructure. Sokoto under Tambuwal was a state adrift. Major roads were left undone, rural electrification was nearly non-existent, and basic health facilities were in deplorable conditions. In many primary health centres, patients had to bring their own mats, bedsheets, and even lamps for night-time delivery. This is the Sokoto he left behind—a state stripped of dignity, running on autopilot.

In contrast, Ahmad Aliyu has hit the ground running. From roads to rural healthcare to housing and education, signs of renewal are everywhere. Interestingly, Tambuwal was seen recently blaring sirens and enjoying the new roads constructed by his successor without shame. Teachers who went unpaid under Tambuwal have begun receiving their salaries. Pensioners, long forgotten, are slowly being remembered. You see, leadership is not about occupying a seat—it’s about service, sacrifice, and measurable progress. These are areas where Tambuwal failed spectacularly.

Tambuwal’s defenders often retreat to his “national stature”—his role as a power broker, a seasoned politician, a party strategist. But Sokoto did not elect a party strategist; Sokoto elected a governor. One whose job was to fix roads, provide water, pay salaries, build schools, and secure lives. On these fronts, he failed. No rhetorical flourish or X (Twitter) campaign can cleanse that legacy.

Why then is Tambuwal struggling to let Governor Aliyu succeed? Could it be envy? Political insecurity? Perhaps he fears the success of his successor may highlight the gaping inadequacies of his own time in office. But this is not just unhealthy, it’s unbecoming. It reeks of the worst kind of political desperation.

And now, he appears to be unleashing attack dogs to do what he no longer has the political capital to do directly. To those in his inner circle, I say this: advise your man to hold his peace. This politics of sabotage, bitterness, and manufactured outrage has lost its sting. The train of that backward politics has left the station, never to return. Tambuwal can either come to terms with that or risk being left behind on the platform of political irrelevance—his greatest fear yet.

Governor Ahmad Aliyu has inherited a broken state, but he is not whining. He is working. The people of Sokoto can feel the difference, see the change, and measure the progress. Let the records speak, not the revisionists. Nigeria may be suffering from selective amnesia, but Sokoto remembers.

And history, no matter how inconvenient, never forgets. Indeed, the people of Sokoto never forget. They’ll carry their knowledge of today into 2027 to defend their right to good governance; to defend their governor notwithstanding what any gathering of vultures would throw at them.

  • Tambuwal, Wamakko take campaigns to home fronts

Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal and his predecessor,.Senator Aliyu Wamakko this afternoon took their campaigns to their home fronts in Tambuwal and Wamakko local governments respectively.

The duo will be expected to woo support of their assumed strong holds even as they are said to have challenges to overcome.

Although, on lookers have pitched Governor Tambuwal of not been on the same page with the political magnates in Tambuwal town who overwhelmingly aligned with opposition PDP for obvious misgivings by the seating governor.

Prominent are a former Commissioner,  Alhaji Umaru Nagwari Tambuwal and the APC Southern  senatorial District candidate, Abubajar Shehu Tambuwal. The duos are key political and opinion leaders in Tambuwal own.

On the other hand, Wamakko’s anticipated challenge in his town seems to be mild as he had been in touch with his people.

However, only time will tell as the duo push for more support to deliver their respective party across all levels in the state.

  • Court reinstates two Sokoto permanent secretaries

A National Industrial Court on Thursday ordered the reinstatement of Alhaji Suleiman S. Fulani Ahmadu, a Permanent Secretary in the Sokoto state civil service.

The court also ordered the state government to pay Ahmadu all his salary arrears to the tune of over N1.5m effective from the date of a purported compulsory retirement of the Permanent Secretary.

In his ruling, Justice Kiyahot Damlak, said the purported compulsory retirement of the Permanent Secretary by the Sokoto state Government on 28th August, 2018 was unconstitutional, unlawful, null and void and has no effect what so ever.

Justice Damlak ruled the reinstated Permanent Secretary should be allowed to complete his term of service between 15th August, 2018 to 23rd July, 2025 when he will be due to retire at 60 years.

The judge, who cited myriad of similar judgements by Supreme and other Higher Courts, also awarded a N100, 000 costs in favour of the Permanent Secretary.

The court also ordered the state government to serve another Permanent Secretary, Alhaji Aminu Dikko for wrongful and unlawfully retirement from service.

Damlak ruled the compulsory retirement of Dikko on the same day with Ahmadu was wrongful, null and void.

According to the judge: “Dikko was employed into the state civil service in October, 1983 and by his years in service, he is exactly 34 years 10 months with two months remaining for him to complete the 35 years in service when he will be due for retirement.”

The court further ordered the government to issue Dikko proper retirement notice, adding he was wrongfully retired on the 28th August 2018 nearly 44 days to the date he would officially retire on the basis of years of service.

The court also ordered the state government to pay Alhaji  Dikko salary for one month and 14 days covering 28 August 2018 to September 2018 which amounts to N474,609.00.

The court ordered that all the payments should be made to the applicants within 30 days from the date of judgment, failure of which will attract a 10percent charge and a N100,000 cost to each applicant.

It will be recalled Ahmadu and Dikko dragged Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, State Head of Service and the Sokoto state civil service commission, challenging their wrongful retirement on  August 28, 2018.

They among others,  sought the Court to order their reinstatement as well as payment of N15 million for cost incurred in engaging the services of their solicitor as well  N100 million each for subjecting them to the punitive, mental, pains, health and psychological  trauma, among others which the Court refused to grant.

  • 2019: Tambuwal town explodes for APC, Buhari

The All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday took its campaign train to Tambuwal town, home front of sitting Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal amidst overwhelming ovation by mammoth crowd of supporters expressing their unprecedented loyalty to the opposition party led by Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko.

“It is evident that he constructed roads and schools, provided hospitals, boreholes and electricity while in office as governor”, he enumerated.

He also reminded the people of Tambuwal that Wamakko was the brain behind picking Governor Tambuwal as his successor against all odds.

“This singular act of love is a rare privilege that should also be reciprocated by Tambuwal people whom we know will support APC.”
