Man Utd set to appoint Lisbon’s Amorim as new manager

Sporting Lisbon have confirmed that Manchester United is interested in hiring their Portuguese coach, Ruben Amorim, following the sack of Erik Ten Hag.

United ended Ten Hag’s two-year tenure on Monday after a disappointing 2-1 loss to West Ham, leaving the club in 14th place in the Premier League.

Amorim, 39, has quickly become the frontrunner to take over after United’s poor start to the season.

A statement from Sporting Lisbon indicated that United is prepared to activate his release clause of 10 million euros (£8.3 million, $10.8 million).

“Manchester United have expressed their interest in recruiting coach Ruben Amorim and have said they are ready to pay the 10 million euro release clause,” Sporting said.

Sport journalist, Fabrizio Romano also confirmed the news on his X page saying  “ Manchester United are set to pay €10m exit clause for Rúben Amorim to become new manager, here we go!

Sporting confirmed formal communication received from #MUFC for Amorim to be appointed.

Amorim has already said yes to Man Utd proposal and project.”

Since joining Sporting in March 2020, Amorim has secured two Portuguese league titles.

Despite significant summer spending in the transfer market, Manchester United has managed to win just one of their last eight matches across all competitions.

Former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy has been appointed as interim manager, but the club seems focused on Ruben Amorim, who is regarded as one of Europe’s top young coaches.

The former Ajax coach, who joined United in May 2022, had fiercely defended his record and won two trophies in his two full seasons for the club before being relieved of his duties on Monday.
