Osun APC leader cautions Amotekun against political witch-hunting of opposition

    • …we’re apolitical, our operations guided by professionalism—Amotekun

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, Chief Musibau Alade, has raised concerns over the alleged politicisation of the Amotekun Corps, accusing the state government of using the outfit to target opposition members.

In a statement on Sunday, Chief Alade condemned the recent arrest and alleged brutalisation of Mr. Wale Adebayo, Personal Assistant to former Governor Adegboyega Oyetola, along with his ex-aide Mr. Taiwo Olaore and other APC members.

He described the incident, which occurred in Iragbiji, the hometown of the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, as a case of political witch-hunt.

He warned against turning Amotekun into a tool for intimidation, saying, “The State Government is weaponising Amotekun to silence political opponents.”

He said, “Amotekun, established under the leadership of former Governor Oyetola and other Southwest leaders, was designed as a grassroots security initiative to combat rising insecurity in the region not for political reason.

“During Oyetola’s tenure, Amotekun was never used to harass or silence political opponents. But now the outfit is use to score political vendettas which is undermining its credibility and eroding public trust.”

He urged stakeholders to act swiftly to restore Amotekun’s original mission of protecting lives and property.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson of Amotekun, Yusuf Idowu denied the allegation, describing it as baseless, saying, “The Amotekun Corps is a non-partisan, community-based security outfit whose operations are guided strictly by the law, professionalism, and the collective interest of the people of Osun State without fear or favour.

“Commander Adekunle Omoyele has brought discipline, transparency, and operational efficiency to the Corps, winning the confidence of traditional rulers, community leaders, and citizens across party lines.”

Amotekun arrests prime suspect in killing of APC chairman in Ondo

Operatives of the Ondo State Security Network Agency, known as the Amotekun Corps, have arrested a prime suspect linked to the killing of Nelson Adepoyigi, the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ward 5, in Ose Local Government Area.

Commander of the Amotekun Corps, Adetunji Adeleye, disclosed this on Monday while parading over 30 suspects involved in various criminal activities across the state.

“We have apprehended one of the prime suspects who masterminded the killing of the APC ward chairman in Ose LGA,” Adeleye said during a press briefing in Akure. “He led us into the bush where we recovered some incriminating items from him.”

Adepoyigi was abducted last month along the Ifon-Owo Road while returning from his farm and was later killed by his captors. His death sparked outrage within the local community and among political stakeholders.

The arrest, according to Adeleye, marks a significant breakthrough in the ongoing investigation and efforts to curb violent crimes in the state.

Unlike Amotekun, ESN is illegal, witness tells court

The Federal High Court in Abuja yesterday heard that the Eastern Security Network (ESN) set up by Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), is an illegal group, unlike the Amotekun established by Southwest states.

An official of the Department of State Services (DSS) made the distinction while testifying as the second prosecution witness in the ongoing terrorism trial of the IPOB leader.

The witness, while being re-examined by prosecuting counsel, Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), said unlike Amotekun, which is backed by laws passed by the various Houses of Assembly of the six Southwest states, ESN is not statute-backed.

“ESN and Amotekun are not the same. I know that states in the Southwest passed laws to legalise Amotekun. But ESN is not registered. ESN is illegal. Amotekun is recognised by law,” the witness said.

The witness agreed that the Director General of the DSS once advocated for communicating policing efforts, under the guidance and approval of security agencies, as a measure against insecurity.

Earlier, a defence lawyer, Paul Erokoro (SAN), tendered three video recordings, contained in a flash drive, which the court admitted in evidence. The three video recordings were subsequently played in open court.

One of the videos showed the DSS DG speaking at an event where he suggested that communities should endeavour to create a first line of defence against bandits and other invaders.

The DSS cited examples of some communities that were able to repel invaders on some occasions and noted that it was practically impossible for security agencies to protect every society in the country.

The DSS boss was heard saying: “The practical approach to mobilising people is to get everyone involved. It is impossible for security agencies to deploy to every part of the country.

“What we need to do is to make communities set up the first line of defence. We have to allow some level of armament for the communities to rise and defend themselves first but under the guidance and approval of security agencies. The time to start it is now.”

When asked by Erokoro whether the DSS DG was not asking for communities to defend themselves, the witness emphasised that the DG stressed that such communities must come for guidance and approval from security agencies.

Another video showed former Defence Minister, General Theophilus Danjuma, addressing a gathering.

Danjuma was heard saying members of the armed forces were not neutral in the ongoing killings across the country.

“They collude with the armed bandits that kill people, that kill Nigerians. They facilitate their movements. They cover them.

“If you are depending on the armed forces to protect you, you will all die one by one,” Danjuma said in the video.

Asked by Erokoro who the speaker in the video was, the witness confirmed that he was Danjuma.

The witness, however, rejected Erokoro’s request for his opinion on the implication of what Danjuma said.

He asked Erokoro to contact Danjuma for the interpretation of his message.

The third video showed Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, complaining about some killings in his state and blaming it on the politicians.

Asked whether Uzodinma’s position did not contradict the witness’ claim that IPOB members were behind killings in Orlu in Imo, the witness said his position was informed by the outcome of their investigation.

The witness noted that, while Uzodinma failed to mention names of victims of the killings he referred to, the DSS’ investigation was specific on the identity of those killed by suspected IPOB members, who were enforcing the sit-at-home directed by Kanu.

“Our investigation revealed those who were killed by suspected IPOB members and we mentioned their names. The governor did not mention any name of people he said were killed,” the witness said.

The witness said he was aware that IPOB had been proscribed and that Kanu had been a member of IPOB before and after its proscription.

On whether he knew what the #EndSARS protest was about, the witness said it was about the call by some people for the police’s Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) to be scrapped.

The witness also said he was aware that some states, including Lagos and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), constituted commissions of enquiry to probe the EndSARS protest and other related incidents.

The witness agreed with Erokoro that the report from the commission set up by Lagos State did not indict IPOB and that it did not classify the protest as an act of terrorism.

Erokoro tendered the report issued by the Lagos Commission of Enquiry, which the court admitted in evidence.

Justice James Omotosho, before adjourning for the day, gave the prosecution six days within which to call all its witnesses and conclude its case.

The judge, following an agreement by parties, adjourned till May 28 and 29, June 6, 16, 18 and 19.

    Ondo Amotekun smashes organ-harvesting syndicate

Operatives of the Ondo State Security Network Agency, also known as Amotekun Corps, have smashed a syndicate that specialised in child trafficking and organ harvesting.

The syndicate was said to have stolen many children from Ondo State and sold them off to another gang in Anambra State.

Amotekun began investigation into their activities after a young boy, Eriponmile, was kidnapped in Ijoka, Davog, Akure, the state capital.

The infant was tracked to a hospital in the Southeast and the suspects arrested.

Ondo Amotekun Commander, Adetunji Adeleye, who paraded the suspects, said it was a swift response that led to the rescue of the child.

He said: “We received a distress call from the Ijoka Davog area that Eriponmile had been kidnapped and taken away, and we immediately swung into action.

“Within 48 hours, our indicators showed that Eriponmile was already outside Ondo State.

“We spread out our dragnets, deployed our plainclothe operatives, and by the grace of God, we were able to bring Eriponmile back to Ondo State to be reunited with his mother and father.

“The team tracked the boy to a hospital in the eastern part of the country, where he had already been tested and declared medically fit to be harvested by one Amaka, suspected to be a major player in the gruesome trade.

“Along the line, we arrested the culprits: the suspected kidnappers and discovered that this is a business they have been involved in for a long time.

“Many children have been kidnapped and used for rituals and organ harvesting.”

Those arrested were Amaka Ngozi Ifeanyi, Adaeze Kenneth Etose, Omolara while two others were said to be at large.

Adaeze,  daughter of the alleged ringleader, Amaka, said she was not part of the syndicate.

“I’m the first daughter of Amaka Ngozi.

“I’m a baker and my shop is at Sijuade. Before this incident, a lady was pregnant and said she didn’t need the baby. She met with my mom and they took the baby to Anambra State, saying someone needed the baby there.

“After they returned, they rented an apartment. Since then, I’ve distanced myself because when she was going, she asked me to follow her and I said no. I wasn’t given any money.”

According to her mother, “I used to sell clothes before my husband died. I now take babies to a motherless babies’ home in Onitsha to sell for N500,000 per child. Myself, Tosin, and Mr Adewale Olokungboye are the ones doing it.”

Another suspect agreed she sold three of her children.

“I gave them my son; Jessica, Segun, and Ojo. I sold my one-year-old baby for N500,000. When they carried out the test on him, the woman said the child is AS and they couldn’t use him because of his genotype. I don’t know the amount they eventually negotiated.”

Father of the rescued boy, Eriseun Omolewo, thanked Amotekun for the prompt action to rescue his son.

“We have been looking for my son since last Tuesday. We came to meet the government to help us in the search for my son.

“Today, to the glory of God, they called me to say that he has been found. I really appreciate the government of Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa for the great effort in ensuring my son was brought back.

“I also thank the men of the Ondo State Security Network Agency, Amotekun.”
