    • From Gboyega Amoboye

Chairman of Amuwo Odofin Local Government, Prince Lanre Sanusi has promised to establish a library, skill acquisition and elders’ recreation centres in the town.

He said land has been acquired in the Sixth Avenue for the projects which will be the first of its kind since the creation of the local government 48 years ago.

Speaking during a quarterly meeting with the Residents Association of Festac Town, Prince Lanre Sanusi assured residents that he has secured the support of the Lagos State government for a solid reconstruction of the Second and Seventh Avenues roads while FERMA would handle First and Fourth Avenues to ensure solid work in the ring roads.

Already, he said, the ongoing palliative works in the inner roads would be replaced immediately with complete rehabilitation.

Answering questions from residents, the chairman challenged each of the five communities to submit four projects for budget consideration and implementation.

Prince Sanusi, who is already enjoying accolades from residents, especially, transporters for restoring life to the town, said it was not time for praises yet until they started seeing wonders. Already streets are being swept daily, refuse cleared as he has increased the number of environmental sanitation staff while promising to employ more in addition to the 20 requested by LAWMA while the refuse collecting vehicle of the council was being rehabilitated.

He therefore advised youths to take advantage of the work available pending their elevation to greater opportunities.        “You have to start from somewhere,” he said, promising that his mission is to restore the dignity of the town.

He said he has come to serve the people of Amuwo Odofin local government, not any political party, “therefore all hands must be on deck to rescue FESTAC town from collapse.”

The unassuming chairman who is always in T-shirt and trousers also said he has come to work and people with genuine advice and request should not hesitate to forward them to his office.

The meeting was sponsored by Community Two.

Amuwo Odofin council boss Sanusi distributes food bags to over 2,000 residents

In a determined effort to cushion the effects of hunger, the Mayor of Amuwo Odofin Local Government, Prince Lanre Sanusi, on Thursday re-launched his ‘Apo Ariyo’ food distribution initiative, providing bagged food items to over 2,000 residents.

The well-attended event, graced by community leaders, stakeholders, and residents, saw Sanusi—accompanied by his wife, Dr. Mrs. Abidemi Ajoke Sanusi—highlight President Bola Tinubu’s compassionate governance as the inspiration behind the Apo Ariyo initiative, noting that it aligns with the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda at the grassroots level.

“We have been doing this since 2014, but this edition is different because you voted for me here. It is part of our father, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s welfarist policy,” Sanusi said. “We will be doing this every month. Next month’s edition will be bigger, and the December one will be more far-reaching due to the festive season.”

According to him, each food pack contains rice, beans, and garri for distribution across the council’s wards, targeting 1,500 households with an additional 500 packs reserved.

The event also featured the groundbreaking ceremony for the ‘Dubar Junction Road’ project at Mile 2, which includes the construction of a gate, gatehouse, perimeter fencing, road repairs, and median beautification.

Sanusi laid the first brick at the site, alongside his vice chairman, Maureen Ashara; APC Chairman, Apostle Ayo Ogunbiyi; and councillors. The project engineer assured that construction would be completed within 12 weeks.

Sanusi further vowed to tackle traffic congestion by enforcing regulations against double parking by tricycle riders, pledging to replicate the orderliness seen in other well-organized communities.

He announced plans to commence reconstruction and repair works on major inner roads such as 1st Avenue to Alakija, 2nd Avenue, 7th Avenue, and Agboju Market Road.

“Our inner roads will receive more attention, and by December, all will be motorable. This is our commitment,” he assured.

He also disclosed that a major road project at Akoso would be completed before the end of next year, reiterating his resolve to serve diligently and deliver visible dividends of democracy.

Stakeholders commended the initiative, describing it as a lifeline for residents. Mr. Waheed Atanda, Chairman of the Community Development Committee (CDC), noted that tackling hunger directly addresses many of the nation’s broader challenges.

Lagos State has been agog with campaigns, for the upcoming local government election, slated for July 12 and Amuwo Odofin, home to the famous FESTAC TOWN and its alluring neighbourhood is not left out of the political fiesta. The ruling party in the local government and the state, the All Progressives Congress (APC), has the Labour Party (LP), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and some mushroom parties to contend with, at the polls.

After a highly contested party primary, the chairmanship candidate of APC, Prince Lanre Sanusi (PLS), and his deputy, Maureen Chika Ashara, are not leaving anything to chance in their campaign for votes. In the past two weeks or so, this writer has thrice witnessed the candidates speak on their vision and mission for the local government area hence this piece. The first was an evening with Amuwo Odofin Stakeholders Forum, of which this writer is the legal adviser. The candidates were clear on their mission to build an all-inclusive local council, regardless of tribe or religion.

The Amuwo Odofin Stakeholders Forum has Sir Benson Abalogu as chairman Board of Trustees with Sir Chidolue Levi Chidinma as vice. The key officers are Chief G.C. Ochie, chairman, Chike Okonkwo, vice chairman, Barrister Chidi Njoku, Secretary, Chief Emmanuel Orjichukwu, Treasurer and Chief Kenneth Ntong, PRO. In the interactive section, at Benny Hotels, the business moguls, professionals, residents and dignitaries who make up the nascent group told the candidates that the sole aim of the group is to promote good governance in Amuwo Odofin and by extension the state. They pledged funds and campaign materials to the team.

At another well-attended meeting with the general Amuwo Odofin Stakeholders, organized by the local government at the Festival Hotel, the young and ebullient Sanusi, who goes by the acronym PLS, showed promising prospects in political rapprochement, which this writer hopes will crystallize into an enduring political relationship with indigenes and non-indigenous residents of the local government area.

Considering the infrastructural challenges facing the local government, particularly the dilapidated roads and blocked drainages within FESTAC TOWN, this writer was initially apprehensive how the evening would go. With who is who in Amuwo Odofin seated in the hall, with the incumbent chairman of Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area, Valentine Braimoh, it turned out an evening of honest conversation. Despite the rains and traffic bottlenecks at the apple junction road-about, intersecting Festac Town, Amuwo, Ago and Jakande Estate/Apapa expressway, which need a fly-over, the hall was filled to capacity.

Gathered were the representatives of the business class, land owners, professions, leaders of residential estates, landlords and tenants’ associations, market men and women, and the ubiquitous traditional rulers. Amongst the APC leaders in the local government council, were the party chairman, Apostle Ayodele Ogungbiye, the councillorship candidates, and those who contested for the chairmanship ticket with Prince Sanusi. After introductions, the chairman of the occasion, Chief Igbokwe George Orji (Okosisi Nnewi), in his introductory remarks delved into the two major reasons for the gathering. The first is to lay bare the challenges facing Amuwo Odofin Local Government.

He mentioned three major challenges facing Amuwo Odofin Local Government, namely, roads, roads, and roads. His presentation resonated well with the audience, since all the roads in FESTAC town are in ruins. The chairman made a handsome donation towards the fund raising. Another speaker raised the issue of discriminatory taxes and rates within the local government, asking for equity and equality in assessment for indigenes and non-indigenes alike. The next speaker urged Prince Sanusi and his team to collaborate with estates to maintain the roads and other infrastructure within the local council.

This writer who spoke on behalf of the Amuwo Odofin Stakeholders Forum, urged other stakeholders, especially non-indigenes to collaborate with Prince Sanusi who has made strong impression as a detribalized candidate in the forth-coming local government election, with an impressive manifesto. Another impressive outing by Prince Sanusi and his deputy was the meeting with the leadership of the Catholic Men Organization, Festac Deanery, led by its coordinator, Sunday Dim. After an evening of frank conversation, the consensus was that the APC candidates should be given a chance in the forthcoming local council election, unlike the voting pattern in the past.

At each of the meetings Sanusi, didn’t disappoint his guests. In the event at the Festival Hotel, Sanusi before delving into his presentation, first removed his jacket and folded his long sleeves shirt, like a manager set to confront a big task. He gave a brief resume of himself, tracing his ancestry to the first Oba of Amuwo. He reminded his audience that he started small in the nearby market, like an Igbo apprentice, where he cut his teeth in business and established strong relationships. He subsequently travelled to the United States of America, where he bagged a BSc in Business, and an MBA, from Dallas Baptist University.

Sanusi spoke eloquently on his blueprint for economic growth and expansion and laid before the assembly his five core values of integrity and accountability, excellence and innovation, inclusivity and equity, sustainability and stewardship, and collaboration and partnership. Thrice he has promised that within the first 100 days in office, he would make motor-able the 2nd Avenue road, a major artery into FESTAC town, which has become a death trap. Sanusi, urged residents of the local government to vote for the APC in the forthcoming local government election, to give him a bargaining power to attract state and federal support to the local government, with a peculiar status.

He promised to seek collaborative partnership between Amuwo Odofin and County Councils in the USA. He reminded the audience that FESTAC town estate belongs to the federal government, even though it is the seat of the Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area. Indeed, FESTAC town is like a goat owned by many, which is left hungry, as each part-owner leaves the others to make provision for the hungry goat. At each session, the stakeholders contended that what will endear APC to the residents of Amuwo Odofin local government area are good roads, whether done by the local government authority, state government or the Federal Housing Authority (FHA), in the case of FESTAC town.

As a stakeholder, this writer hopes Prince Sanusi will live up to his mission statement. On it, he wrote: “My mission is to build a vibrant, inclusive, and diversified economy where every individual has the opportunity to thrive.” He continued: “I am committed to fostering lifelong opportunities that uplift social welfare, ensuring that prosperity is shared by all, not just a few.” The Amuwo Odofin Stakeholders Forum, and indeed other stakeholders, earnestly look forward to a new era of political rapprochement, for the benefit of all and sundry.

  • Police supervised illegal demolition of my property, businessman alleges

A Ghana-based Nigerian businessman has accused policemen attached to the Special Fraud Unit (SFU) Ikoyi of aiding suspected land grabbers to take over his property.

Jayson Kimipado in a petition to the Inspector General of Police (IG) Adamu Mohammed alleged that a Deputy Superintendent (DSP) and an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) both of the SFU had connived with a certain Prince and another Obele to illegally demolish his structure and trespassed his land located at Lake View Estate, Amuwo-Odofin.

Addressing reporters in Lagos on behalf of Kimipado, an agent Edward Ojefia who said he was the one who assisted the petitioner in purchasing the land disclosed that it was bought in 2016 and registered at the land registry with a certified true copy of Certificate of Occupancy (CofO) and a survey plan obtained.

Ojefia said he was the go-between Kimipado and the seller because the former was in Ghana, adding that payments were made through transfers to the seller, a lawyer.

“Transfers were made over the agreed purchase amount to the seller. The seller took only part payment of the agreed price on hearing from the man he earlier bought the land from that some persons were trespassing into the land.

“It was agreed between all the parties that part payment should be made pending the resolution of the action the owner of the land intended taking against the trespassers. Subsequently, the seller initiated action at the High court of Lagos State and during the pendency of the action; the trespassers were duly served all the notices by the order of court.”

Continuing, he said judgement was delivered in favour of the seller on June 15, 2015 and that led to the completion of transaction between the seller and himself.

Having paid the full amount agreed, Kimipado said he fenced the land and commenced erecting structures.

Trouble however started for Kimipado in 2017 when the alleged grabbers threatened to pull down part of his fence on grounds that it encroached on their land. He said his tormentors had boasted they have police influence and went ahead to show same by illegally demolishing, taking possession of and mounting armed policemen permanently on his land.

Aside that, Ojefia said he was detained for three days at the SFU alongside Bolaji Salami because they assisted Kimipado to buy the land.

“Although we were released on bail, six months later, we were re-arrested in a gestapo-like manner by the same officers from SFU without prior invitation.

“The officers that arrested us- SP Austin Osobase and ASP Mohammed Abdulkareem- claimed that the response they got from enquiries at the land use allocation committee showed that Kimipado’s land was some meters away from where it is on his survey plan.

“However, it was later discovered that the survey plan was deceitfully annexed to the present owner’s Certificate of Occupancy as the documents of the trespassers and was sent by the police officers to the Land Use Allocation Committee.

“The police officers also brought officials from the Surveyor-General’s office that entered the land without permission for the purpose of taking coordinates of the land to determine the owner. Later, the committee stated in their report that the CofO belonging to Kimipado is authentic and valid.

“But the officers did not relent; they continued superintending over dispute arising from proprietary and ownership claim over the land. This made representative of Kimipado to approach the Federal High Court to enforce their fundamental rights after threats.

“On December 20, last year, the trespassers came with a bulldozer in company of policemen who started shooting into the air to scare away any opposition and demolished part of Kimipado’s property. After that, they stationed some armed Mobile Policemen at the site to ward off entrance by the owner.

“The matter was promptly reported at Area E and the Mobile Policemen were arrested. However, the two officers from SFU later came to the station and requested their release purportedly on the orders of the Commissioner of Police at SFU.

“Two weeks after, the trespassers came again to demolish another part of the property under the full cover of policemen led by the two officers from SFU prompting a petition to the IG who ordered their immediate arrest by the X-Squad at Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (FCIID) Alagbon.

“Surprisingly, after the arrest of the officers, they were released unconditionally and the trespassers have gone back to the land with armed soldiers and policemen on guard,” he said.

However, the police denied the allegation insisting it had no hand in the demolition.
Spokesman for the SFU Lawal Audu, a DSP said: “It is a lie. Our officers did not supervise the demolition of any house or structure. SFU was involved after the former IGP directed us to take over the case from X-Squad, FCIID, Alagbon. After we took over, our officers investigated the case and found out that the land does not belong to the claimant.

“The claimant swindled the land vendor because the vendor has no land in that place. He sold another person’s land to him. The officers in question are senior officers. How can they supervise the destruction of a site?
“SFU does not have the manpower to go to site and destroy properties. They should channel their grievances to another place. The petitioner is even a shortee not a claimant who is in Ghana. He wrote the petition when we invited him and he could not provide the man that claims to have bought the land. We are not involved and will never be involved in such a case.”
