  • Anambra CJ becomes World Jurists board member

    Anambra State Chief Judge, Justice Peter Umeadi, has been elected  into the Governing Board of the World Jurist Association (WJA).

    The Nation gathered yesterday that Justice Umeadi was elected at the WJA’s 25th Biennial Congress with the theme: “Energy: Peace and Justice for All”. The congress held in the Caribbean Island of Aruba.

    Justice Umeadi’s election has made him the National President of the Nigerian chapter of the WJA. It also qualifies Nigeria to host the next WJA’s biennial meeting, scheduled for October 2019, which would make Nigeria the first African country to host WJA meeting.

    Also elected as members of the association’s board of governors are Franklin Hoet Linares, from Venezuela, as President; T. A. O. Kaiyuan, from China, as First Vice President; Saeed Zayed Alshamsi, from United Arab  Emirates, as 2nd Vice President and Glendeline Croes, from Aruba, as 3rd Vice President.

    Others are Jacinto Soler Padro, from Spain, to represent World Association of Lawyers; Alberto Jurado, from Venezuela (World Association of Law Professors)  and Alexander Low, from Germany, (World Association of Business Associates).

    Established in1963 in reaction to global clamour for a free and open forum where judges, lawyers, law professors and students world over, could collaborate to strengthen and expand the concept of Rule of Law and its institutions globally.

    The main purpose of the Aruba congress, according to the organisers  was to integrate, as one of the resolutions of the Declaration of Aruba, the consecration by consensus of a new universal Human Right: The Right of Access to Sustainable Energy to Facilitate Long Term Development.

     

    As a non-governmental organisation with special consultative status at the UN Economic and Social Council, the WJA provides a unique forum for the international community.

    With nearly 50 years of accomplishments, the WJA is one of the few organizations working with a broad range of stakeholders to promote the Rule of Law as the path towards world peace.

    Its members include sitting and retired Chief Justices, judges, government officials, law professors, lawyers and students from over 140 different countries.

    WJA has National Presidents in 85 countries, with a Board of Governors that represents every continent and aspect of the legal profession.

     

     

  • Anambra CJ to mark 60th birthday

    As part of activities to mark the 60th birthday of the Chief Judge of Anambra State, Justice Peter Umeadi, a collection of his selected  rulings and judgments will be presented at  Sir Louis Mbanefo Bar Centre, High Court of Justice, Onitsha on July 4, by 9am.

    Justice Sylvester Ngwuta of the Supreme Court will chair the event; Gov. Willie Obiano will be the special guest of honour; His Royal Majesty, Obidiegwu Onyesoh, Eze Nri  Enwelana 11,  will be the royal father of the day; and Anambra State House of  Assembly Speaker Princess Chinwe Nwaebili  will be the guest of honour.

    A statement by the CJ said donations will not be accepted  and the compilation is not for sale.

    Anambra CJ frees 13 inmates

    The Chief Judge of Anambra State, Justice Peter Umeadi, has freed six inmates of the Aguata prisons on bail, and discharged another one. 13 others were also released from the Onitsha prisons.

    This follows a tour of the prisons by the Chief Judge aimed at decongesting the prisons. The tour, which started on June 1, will end today with a visit to Awka prisons.

    Justice Umeadi also lamented that inmates in Onitsha and Aguata does not have records.

    This according to him makes it difficult to apply for their bail at the regular courts.

    Deputy Chief Registrar, Special Duties and Protocol, Agbasionwe Eugene Agbasionwe said the tour was to ensure that people unduly kept in custody were released.

    The prison goal delivery is done annually to decongest the prisons in Awka, Aguata and Onitsha.

  • Anambra CJ honours Obiano, Orji, others

    The Chief Judge of Anambra State, Justice Peter  Umeadi will on Friday at Finotel Hotel, Awka, Anambra State honour  Governor Willie Obiano and others.

    The occasion is the fourth Annual Chief Judges’ Dinner  and maiden Award Night.

    Others to be honoured are Abia State Governor Theodore Orji; Pioneer Chief Judge of new Anambra State, Justice Anthony I. Iguh (JSC) rtd; the Pioneer President, Anambra State Customary Court of Appeal, Justice  Chinwe Amechi;  Chief Ladi Williams (SAN) and nine other  exemplary  workers of the Anambra State Judiciary.

    Obiano will be the guest of honour while Chief Williams will be the guest speaker.

    He will speak on the theme: Enhancement of the legal profession: the role  of the Bench and the Bar.

    Time is 6pm.
