Day after attack: Anambra community gloomy

Perpetrators of Sunday’s Church massacre must be brought to justice, many said yesterday. Those who reacted to the attack on worshippers are asking law enforcement agencies to swing into action, report TONY AKOWE, OGOCHUKWU ANIOKE, VICTOR OLUWASEGUN, OSHEYE OKWUOFU AND FRANK IKPEFAN.

IT was still gloomy yesterday in Amakwa-Ozubulu, an Anambra community in Ekwusigo Local Government Area. Residents were recounting the shooting of parishioners at St. Philip’s Catholic Church during Sunday’s early morning Mass by a lone gunman.

The yet-to-be-identified gunman, who emptied his cartridge and reloaded it, escaped in a waiting car as he continued shooting.

The Anambra State Police Commissioner, Garba Baba Urmar confirmed the death of 11 members of the congregation. He said 18 others were injured.

    Survivors recount ordeal

Some of the survivors yesterday recounted the Anambra church shooting. They said the victims were mostly children and the elderly.

Charles Justice, who brought his wounded friends to the Nnamdi Azikiwe Teaching Hospital in Nnewi, said the incident happened after the homily at 6am Mass, the Premium Times reported yesterday.

“Those who died are mostly children and the elderly, I know about three children who were below five years that died in the shooting.” said Mr. Justice was quoted as saying.

According to him, three of the victims had died at the hospital, a claim corroborated by a medical doctor who pleaded for anonymity.

Sixteen parishioners among those injured, were reported to be in stable conditions yesterday. Six had successfully undergone surgeries, it was learnt.

The police preliminary investigation confirmed the theory that the gun spray was triggered by a feud between two individuals of the same community who reside overseas.

“One of the individuals built the church where the shooting occurred; it is definitely not a terrorist attack in the mould of Boko Haram of Fulani herdsmen attack,” said Garba Umar, the state’s police commissioner.

On Sunday, the church cordoned off by security operatives, as blood stains and expended bullets littered the premises. Many of the villagers and sympathisers were seen yesterday standing in groups and discussing the incident in hushed tones.

At the Nnamdi Azikiwe Teaching Hospital in Nnewi, where most of the victims were admitted, people struggled to gain entrance through the heavily guarded gate.

Azuka Ejidike said he lost his father-in-law to the shooting. But Nonso Nwakibe gave thanks to God as his mother, Antonia, lay groaning from the pains of the bullet wounds on her arm.

Ogochukwu Maduka, a Lay Reader at the church, said she had arrived for the Mass and found the church in darkness.

She said: “After much effort to get the generator to work failed, they had resort to using candles and rechargeable lamps”

Ms. Maduka, who said she sat on the front roll during the Mass, said: “The holy Mass had proceeded as usual, after the first, second and gospel reading, and then the priest’s homily, as we stood up for the proclamation of faith, there was a sound of gun like thunder from behind.

“There was chaos and panic and confusion. The priest ran away as the gunshots continued and I took cover under the seat.

“When people started running around, the man began shooting upwards. Those mostly affected were those at the back of the church.”

Ms. Maduka claimed she counted about 15 corpses afterwards but the police confirmed 11.

Nnagolum Oramidike, a primary three pupil, who was shot in the leg, said: “I bent down” while the shooting was going on.”

His mother, Chioma, who also sustained bullet wounds, said she was worried the news would devastate her husband, who had just travelled abroad to seek greener pastures, but hoped he would find out they were alive.

“The shooting started around 7am and my father in law was not so lucky,” said Mrs. Oramidike, 32, whose daughter was hit by a motorcycle amidst the chaos.

“I don’t know how to take care of my children now I’m incapacitated”, she added.

Ifeoma Onyeka sat beside her 14-year-old daughter who had just been operated upon. Her older, foster daughter, Anwurika Mboje, did not survive the incident – she had died right inside the church.

“I survived by taking shelter under the seat while the children must have started running because of lack of knowledge of what to do in such a circumstance”, she said.

    Fed Govt sends more doctors

The Federal Ministry of Health has placed medical experts on standby to beef up services at the Nnamdi Azikwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi, for worshippers injured in the Ozubulu church attack, should the need arise.

Media and Public Relations Director in the ministry Mrs. Boade Akinola confirmed yesterday that the Health Minister, Prof. Isaac Adewole, has approved the arrangement.

The minister, who described the incident as shocking, assured the referral hospital’s Chief Medical Director (CMD) of immediate federal support upon request.

He commended the doctors at the hospital for being proactive in their response to the emergency.

Prof Adewole commiserated with the government and people of Anambra on the unfortunate incident.

Governor Willie Obiano has promised to unmask the masterminds and bring them to justice.

    NHRC, ANN condemn killing

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC Acting Executive Secretary, Mrs Oti Ovrawah, condemned the killing of worshippers by the gunman.

In a statement signed in Abuja yesterday by the NHRC’s Media Relations’ Head, Fatimah Mohammad, Mrs. Ovrawah described the killing as unacceptable, adding that there was no justification for it.

She noted that the sanctity of life of every one living in Nigeria was important, and called on security agencies to step up their intelligence gathering techniques.

Mrs. Ovrawah further urged security agencies to urgently fish out the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

According to her, everyone living in Nigeria has a right to life and should enjoy this right without fear and intimidation.

She commended state government for its prompt decision to foot the medical expenses of the injured victims, and condoled with the families of the victims.

The Alliance for New Nigeria (ANN), a new political group, also condemned in strong terms the killings at the worship place.

It described it as an unimaginable desecration of the house of God and unparalleled disregard for the sanctity of the human life.

The group’s spokesman Leonard Ebute said the group received with shock news of the dawn raid on the church which left many people dead and scores injured.

Saying the attack was unacceptable, ANN’s spokesman said: “We are not interested in the motivation of the killers or the reason behind such heinous crime. We are not unmindful of different stories making the rounds purportedly explaining the reason behind the killings.

“The ANN is not interested in these stories while trusting security agencies to do a thorough job in fishing out the killers and make them tell the whole world the reason behind such dastardly act.

“While we await that, we make haste to tell fellow Nigerians that acts like this do not have a space in the Nigeria the group is envisioning for her weary compatriots.”

The ANN said the trauma caused families of victims and people of Ozoubulu could better be imagined and expressed its heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost their lives during the raid and prayed for a peaceful repose of the souls of the victims.

The statement reads: “ANN feels your pain. We also sympathise with the people of Anambra State over this ugly development and all members of the Catholic community in the town and the state in general. We pray God to console you Himself and help in bringing to justice those behind this crime against humanity.”

Southeast lawmakers’ caucus wants killers arrested

The Southeast Caucus in the House of Representatives described the killing of parishioners as highly unacceptable.

In a signed statement issued in Abuja by Chukwuka Onyema, the Caucus called on security agencies to ensure the immediate arrest and prosecution of all those connected to the heinous crime.

Onyema, who is the House’ Deputy Minority Leader, said: “The devilish and unwholesome murder of innocent worshippers in a church, where they went to seek the face of God is highly reprehensible and is a case that must be properly investigated to speedily restore the people’s confidence of their safety.”

He also commiserated with the families of the deceased on behalf of the Caucus, and prayed for quick recovery of the victims.

Onyema said in honour of the dead and to keep their community safe, those who can assist the security agencies with information to solve the crime, should do so.

The Caucus leader extended his heartfelt condolences to the Catholic Church, Anambra government and Nigeria over the sad and unfortunate incident.

    ‘It’s an attack on God’

The pro-East Socio-Cultural group, Ohaneze Ndigbo, yesterday condemned the attack by unknown gunmen, describing it as an attack on God.

“Such a dastardly and cantankerous act smells to high heaven. People have lost reason, civility and good conscience. This is a direct attack on God with daft and brazen impunity.”, the organisation noted.

In statement by group’s National Publucity Secretary, Prince Uche Achi-Okpaga, Ohaneze described the attack as unforgivable.

It said: “The devil sold a dummy to them and they bought it hook, line and sinker. This is condemned in all ramifications. If you attack a man you appeal to God for recompense, when you attack God in His sanctuary who will appeal to?” he queried.

Commiserating with the government and people of the state, the group urged the Police not to speculate but to carry out detailed investigation to unmask the real perpetrators.

The statement reads: “Ohaneze joins the league of well-meaning Nigerians to commiserate with the good people of Anambra state and, in particular, the entire bereaved families and pray the Almighty God to give them enough spiritual shock absorbers to bear the irreparable and irreplaceable loss.

“The operatives should not speculate. They should swing into action to unmask the devil incarnates.”

Achi-Okpaga further charged security agencies to redouble their efforts to make the south east zone safer for the people.

“The whole of Southeast is under siege with Police and military blockades here and there. Yet, herdsmen killings and kidnapping and all sorts of vices have become the order of the day. It is unfortunate.”

    Ekiti governor

    calls for probe

Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose commiserated with the Catholic Church of Nigeria, the government and people of Anambra State as well as families of the victims.

He described the killers as wicked and devilish.

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Idowu Adelusi, the governor called on the police and other security agencies to carry out a thorough investigation on the killings with a view to bringing the perpetrators to book.

He was quoted as saying: “Killing fellow human beings is devilish, not to talk of killings in the House of God. I condemn the Ozubulu murder in its entirety.”

Calling for value reorientation in the country, Fayose said: “It is time for us as a nation to have another look at our moral values. Where did we get it so wrong that we now kill one another at will?

“Boko Haram killings in the Northeast, Badoo killings in Lagos, Fulani herdsmen killings across the country, ritual killings everywhere, and now, drug war, what’s wrong with us as a people? Why is it that we no longer value human lives?

“Methinks there is urgent need for leaders of this country to take the issue of moral value reorientation of the citizens seriously.”

Fish out perpetrators, NLC, UPP urges government

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the United Progressive Party (UPP) yesterday urged the government to bring to book those behind Sunday’s killing of innocent worshipers.

In a statement in Abuja, NLC President Ayuba Wabba said the assailants must be identified and apprehended He described the incident as shocking, bizarre and reprehensible.

Wabba said: “Places of worship quite often in decent conflicts are sanctuaries. What makes this attack more confounding is the fact that Ozubulu is far removed from any known theatre of conflict at the moment and has had little or no history of violent conflict.

“Whatever may have been the situation,  this attack represents a descent into the pit of hell. It is animalistic, cowardly and shameful and all necessary steps should immediately be taken by security forces to bring the perpetrators to book.

“Our heartfelt condolences go to the families of the victims, the Catholic Church, Governor Willie Obiano and the people of Anambra State. We urge our security agencies to step up security in and around places of worship. We similarly urge worshippers to take the initiative of securing their premises.”

The National Chairman of the United Progressive Party (UPP), Chekwas Okorie, said the party received with shock the news of the killing, describing it as cowardly, detestable and abominable.

He added that the  murder of the Catholic faithful inside the Church while worshipping the Almighty God was outrageous, a sacrilege and sadism of the worst order.

“We also commiserate with the leadership of Saint Philip’s Catholic Church, the Government and people of Anambra State and pray that God Almighty will give them the fortitude to bear the loss of these loved ones. We equally pray for the speedy recovery of those wounded in this senseless attack.

“We urge security agents to fish out the assailants and their sponsors and bring them to book to serve as a deterrent to those who would contemplate this heinous crime against fellow compatriots. This madness must stop.”

  • Epileptic power over in Anambra community

Epileptic power over in Anambra community

The days of darkness or unpredictable are over in Umuchigbonu, a community in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State where the villagers trooped out to witness the inauguration of a multi-million naira rural electrification project. It was executed by the Ihekamba Foundation.

High-tension cables were also run through the community and some other communities in Ubahuekwem.

For many years, the community had grappled with perennial epileptic power supply. Now, the residents can heave a sigh of relief.

They sang in victory over power outage while expressing gratitude to God.

Other things are changing too. The residents no longer drink from a stream because pipe-born water is all over the place in the community.

Also, the community which had been involved in communal crisis over land is now peaceful.

During the 2016 edition of Chigbonu Day Celebration, the occasion witnessed the commissioning of several other projects that are likely to impact positively on the lives of the people in the area.

Other projects commissioned included a box-culvert constructed by the Ezenwafor family and road signs at strategic locations of the community installed by the oldest man in the area.

At the commissioning, donors explained why they executed the projects for the community.

Founder of Ihekamba Foundation, Mr. Donatus Ihekamba Onuchukwu who spoke with The Nation, said he was grateful to God for the gift of Kevin Ihekamba Onuchukwu his younger brother whom he noted has accomplished what he started many years ago.

Prof. Emeka Desmond Ezenwafor, an illustrious son of Umuchigbonu, described the Ihekamba Foundation’s gesture as unprecedented.

He said that the donation of an electricity transformer to Umuchigbonu by Ihekamba foundation, naming of Chigbonu Road by the oldest surviving son of Chigbonu, donation of the portion of land where the transformer was installed by Obunadike family as well as the construction of a box-culvert for the community by Ezenwafor family were important landmarks in the history of the community.

On the issue of internal squabbles in the community, Prof. Ezenwafor, stated that no community thrives without crisis but expressed optimism that the crisis will come to an end and make Umuchigbonu community much stronger.

Ezenwafor disclosed that plans were afoot to maintain the two kilometre road named after Ezenwafor Ozoji his late father, to make it passable.

He added that the road would be widened so that people could move into Umuchigbonu community and add to economic growth and social development in the area.

  • Rage in Anambra community over abattoir

Rage in Anambra community over abattoir

Amansea community in Awka North Local Government Area, Anambra State hosts one of the state’s three abattoirs. For 15 years the abattoir had existed, there had not been any squabble between members of Chisom Butchers’ Association and the community. But NWANOSIKE ONU writes that penultimate Sunday, operators of the abattoir were allegedly attacked by thugs over local government revenue issues

Until recently, the 15-year-old abattoir at Amansea in Awka North Local Government Area, Anambra State, has never witnessed any form of squabble. Being one of the three abattoirs in the state, it usually is a Mecca of sorts to nearby communities. According to some residents, this is so because beef from there is neat and cheap.

Regrettably, the chairman of Awka North Local Government Area, Cosmos Okonkwo, was alleged to have stormed the abattoir with 10-bus loads of thugs who were allegedly armed with dangerous weapons such as guns, machetes and clubs, among others and beat the chairman of Chisom Butchers’ Association, Christian Nwankwo mercilessly. The event occurred penultimate Sunday,

    Nwankwo
    Nwankwo

Explaining his ordeal, Nwankwo told our correspondent that trouble started when the council chairman demanded that the association should pay to him the revenue which accrues from the abattoir instead of paying it to the state government coffers.

He said Governor Willie Obiano had directed that all the abattoirs in the state should pay all revenues to the state government and not to any other person, group or association.

Before then, Nwankwo had alleged that the association has been giving the local government chief N30, 000 per week, adding that the sum of N300 was paid for each cow that was slaughtered in the abattoir. He said that was after signing some agreements with him before the Governor’s directive.

According to counsel to the butchers’ association, Emma Okechukwu, the earlier agreement was that the council would provide water supply (boreholes and overhead tanks), re-roofing of the slaughter house and slabs, re-roofing of concrete slabs and provision of good drainage system within the premises of the abattoir.

But after five months of payment to the council without commensurate facilities at the abattoir as agreed with the council, the butchers started asking questions. This, he said, infuriated the council chairman who began to threaten and intimidate members of the butchers’ association.

Based on the threats, harassments and intimidation by the council chief to force his clients to pay, he was reminded of the subsisting injunction by the Federal High Court for stay of execution until the determination of the matter pending in the court since 2010.

But in disregard to the order, Okechukwu said, the council chairman sent his internally-generated revenue (IGR) team who came with a letter from the council chief demanding the sum of N800, 000 as environmental levy. He added that the meat sellers had no other option than to join him in pursuing the case that has been pending in the Federal High Court.

Speaking with our correspondent in Awka, the Vice-Chairman of the meat sellers, Emma Nwagu, said but for the intervention of the Awka Police Area Commander, Usman Yusuf, there would have been a bloodbath in Awka.

He said the people took them unawares because they were not envisaging such a thing from the chairman of a council. He said the thugs disembarked from the buses and held Nwankwo on the jugular and forced all of them to lie down on the ground.

He said: “When we saw some vehicles approaching the abattoir, we thought they were customers because this place is always like a market because of the kind of meat we sell here.”

Not only that the chairman of the council allegedly invaded the slaughter house with thugs, Mr. Nwankwo and members of his executive alleged that the thugs stole N18.7 million which the members contributed in order to buy cows.

Also, they alleged that Okonkwo and his men made away with 16 live cows the cost of which they put at N2 million.

While reacting to the allegations by the butchers, the council chairman described them as baseless and unfounded.

He said if anybody wanted to know the true position of what transpired on that day, such information could be provided by police men from the B–Division Department who were present.

Furthermore, he told our correspondent that since the butchers had reported the matter to the police, they are supposed not to be carrying up such baseless allegations.

When the police Area Commander, Usman Yusuf was contacted for comment on the matter, he confirmed the near mayhem that almost crippled the community.

Yusuf said when the report reached the police, they had to mobilise their men to the place to avoid any break down of law and order.

“The story is true, but we thank God that we restored peace to the warring parties. The matter has not ended because the command has gone into investigation already.

“We are not going to say anything on the matter yet, until investigations are completed to establish what really happened,” he said.

Already, Mr. Nwankwo has appealed to Governor Obiano to come to their aid.

He wondered if it was a crime for people from other states to establish businesses in Anambra State, adding that the council chairman has allegedly threatened to deal with them because they are from Ebonyi State.

  • Anambra community bemoans excavation woes

    Anambra community bemoans excavation woes

In Umuezeawara community in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State, the grief of loss is constant, residents said.

About 40 of their members have been crushed to death by overspeeding tipper drivers  coming in from other communities to excavate sand in Umuezeawara.

The residents claimed that their children were killed every dayby the drivers.

There is also another worry: the huge craters created by the excavators are very dangerous and could become death traps, the residents further said.

They also alleged that despite their cries and petitions to the Anambra State Ministry of Environment to come to their aid have failed to yield the needed result.

A 28-year-old widow, Mrs. Roseline Nwankwo, whose husband was killed by the reckless tipper drivers plying the community, said instead of action taken to remedy the situation, it has become worst.

She noted that the Tipper Drivers’ Association paid her a paltry sum of N200, 000 as compensation after its member knocked down and killed her husband.

A Hydro-geologist, Mr. Emmanuel Nwabineli lamented that their environment is under threat as a result of the degradation occasioned by the excavation of sand.

He said: “I have sent petitions to the federal and state ministries of environment; you know that before one starts to excavate sand at any point, you must carry out Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) but this was not done here.”

The deplorable condition of the Umuezeawara Road, has elicited reactions from the public, as it remains impassable anytime it rains, yet the tipper drivers do not care despite the number of deaths the community has recorded.

The road which traverses Okija community junction through Ihiala to Egbema in Imo State to Rivers State was constructed by President Shehu Shagari regime in 1980. As a result of its bad nature, some parts of it were reconstructed by the Anambra State government through the local government.

Despite the reconstruction, the road is still in a sorry state due to the pressure exerted on it by over 120 Mercedes 911 tipper loaders that ply on it on daily basis.

Some of the traders at Afor Igwe Umudara village market rue the hardship they experience every market day.

One of the veteran journalists from the area, Pa Hyacinth Nwabineli, told our correspondent that the people experience much pains and agony because of the situation.

He said: “We are really suffering so much. Look at the road in front of my house, it is always like River Niger and we always place logs of wood for people to walk over.

“So many school children and farmers have been killed by these tipper drivers. The number of death recorded in this place as a result of the horrible situation is between 40 and 50 people.”

He appealed to the state government to come to the aid of the people before it is too late.

Also, one-time Chief Press Secretary to Governor Chinwoke Mbadinuju, Ody Chukwube described the situation as worrisome to the people of the area.

Chukwube said: “I feel troubled about what my village is going through at this moment. You can see it yourself; in fact, we lack words to express the havoc being caused by these truck drivers.

“Before now, we had made sustained representation to the National Assembly through our legislator, Chief Forte Dike. The community leaders are still meeting and after that, we shall also speak with the state government before taking the next line of action.”

•Traditional Head, Chief James Chukwudolue of Umuezeawara
•Traditional Head, Chief James Chukwudolue of Umuezeawara

The mood of the traditional head of Umuezeawara, Ogbuehi James Chukwudolue was that of frustration, anguish and pains.

He said: “The tipper drivers begin as early as 4:00 a.m. every day and the way they drive around our village is a threat to lives and even people’s buildings.

“They do not respect traffic rules and even when other road users complain, they are sometimes beaten up. Since 1964 that I became the traditional head of this place, I have never witnessed this number of deaths,” Chukwudolue said.

The chairman of Umuezeawara village, Dr. Donatus Iberi, alleged that the tipper drivers display such attitude because somebody was behind them.

“We know that this is business for some people, but it should not be to the detriment of our lives and the major road that passed through our village.

“You need to come here when it rains, you cannot even move around. Many vehicles had been stuck on those deep and wide pot holes which can even pass for a gully.”

Iberi further said that sometimes the people follow bush paths to go wherever they want to go, due to the deplorable condition of the road.

For a 44-year-old Louis Okani, his agony was unbearable. His seven-year-old son, Chukwuebuka was killed few months ago by one of the same tipper drivers.

“Before these tipper drivers started using the road, we had no problems. We had enough space to do our trading. Suddenly, the road began to form deep pot holes and encroached into the market.

“I lost my seven-year-old son Chukwuebuka to the accident that occurred few months ago. He was returning home from school when one of the tipper drivers hit him and he died on the spot.

“The worst is that the driver ran away with his tipper and all my efforts to find out that particular driver that killed my son proved abortive because hundreds of them pass through that road on daily basis on speed,” he said.

When approached for comment on the matter, one of the tipper drivers refused to either to talk or disclose his identity. He threatened to run over any body that tried to block his way.

Efforts made to contact the Commissioner for Environment yielded no result as he refused to pick his calls. A visit to his office was also not fruitful as our correspondent was barred from seeing him.”

However, a staff in his office who spoke to our correspondent in confidence because he was not competent to speak on the matter said that a petition on the issue was brought to the office, adding that in due course, the state government would look into the matter.

  • Cultural splendour in Anambra community

    Cultural splendour in Anambra community

The Umuoji community in Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State is famous for its rich culture and traditions. The Uzoiyi Festival, one of the key items on its calendar, has just taken place. ODOGWU EMEKA ODOGWU reports

The festival arena was large and sandy. Despite the hot weather, people gathered there in large number.

For this year’s annual Uzoiyi Festival, Chiefs and titled men looked resplendent in their chieftaincy attires as they arrived at the village square. Non-chiefs and non-titled men were not left out at the event which ushers in the rainy and farming seasons.

According to the traditional ruler, Igwe Cyril Enweze, Umuoji people revere the festival. Because of this, sons and daughters of the community at home and abroad return home every year to celebrate the Uzoiyi Festival. It is the second most important event in the community after Christmas.

Highlight of the festival is the appearance of different masqueraders, one of which is Ezenmuo Umuoji adjudged as Africa’s most superior masquerader. Ezenmou Umuoji Masquerader marked its 100 years last year as it was installed in 1913. It made its first appearance at Enugu during the official celebration of January 14 amalgamation of the northern and southern protectorates.

The Ezenmuo Umuoji Masquerader is great in valour and magnificence that even the most revered king of Umuoji respects it.

For instance, during this year’s festival, the Ezenmuo Masquerader interrupted Igwe Enweze while he was delivering his speech.

The masquerader made its way into the cultural arena, danced and left amid encomiums from the spectators. Nobody could stop the great masquerader.

The monarch’s entreaties did not sway the masquerader. It was allowed to have its way and it added colour to the event.

Igwe Enweze rated this year’s Uzoiyi Festival high, describing it as an ancient annual event which celebration ushers in the rainy and farming seasons.

Igwe Enweze praised Governor Peter Obi for providing the people with skill acquisition centre, health centre, and a road linking the town with Eke-Abatete. He also praised Governor Obi for the revival of some ailing cultures of the state.

He pleaded with the state Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Chief Joe-Martins Uzodike who represented Governor Obi at the occasion to tell him that the Umuoji community appreciated him and his good works, pledging the community’s unflinching support to the administration of the incumbent chairman of Idemili-North Local Government Area, Hon. Obi Ikem Obi for his commitment to improve the well-being of the people.

Chairman of the occasion, Chief Celestine Aniuno (Ochudo-Umuoji), who incidentally was the sole financier Uzoiyi Festival for last year and this year respectively, announced a N1.5 billion launch of what he termed “Umuoji Economic Development and Rural Trust Fund.”

The trust fund, according to him, aims at industrialisation and empowerment of his people in areas of wealth creation, self-sufficiency and employment.

Chief Aniuno, who stressed that “the celebration was a showcase for Africa’s rich cultural heritage and tradition, noted that Umuoji is a home of hospitality, accomplished and is also has much tourist’s attractions and natural endowments. There should be collaborative efforts among wealthy individuals in the land to help in the social and economic development of the town.”

President-General of Umuoji Town Union, Hon. Basil Okonkwo praised Ochudo Umuoji, describing him as peace-loving whose wealth of experience and philanthropy have wiped tears from eyes of countless Nigerians.

On his part, Chairman of Idemili-North Local Government Area, Hon. Ikem Ike Obi, said his administration was determined to make Uzoiyi gain an international recognition. He also revealed the council’s resolve to provide all communities in the council with social necessary amenities.

Highlight of the occasion was parade of masquerades from the 23 villages that make up the community. They are Akum, Afuekwe, Ebubeagu, Great Igada, Aguiyi Umuoma, Inyinya Umuazu, Zebra, Enyi Abidi, Anogu Egbenuoba and Akwunechenyi, among others.

“We solicit for individuals that will help us erect some structures on the site because we need to secure this project in our town.

‘’Through the goodwill of Governor Peter Obi, we gave the state fire service  three plots of land for the building of a fire service station project at Oye Agulu-Umuowelle village. The survey plan has been completed and we are waiting for work to start. The site of the proposed tire station is a hilly area with deposits of sands and stones. So we had an agreement with I.D.C Construction Company to dig a burrow pit and excavate the sands for their bridge construction. The I.U.C Company has paid the sum of N1.4 million into our account. This shows dire shrewdness, transparency and accountability of our administration’’.

Aniagboso announced that the drainage at Okechinyere junction and Uhume village has been reconstructed with the assistance of the state government for easy flow of flood water.

He revealed plans to erect  a skill acquisition centre for their youths as a means to curb their propensity to criminal tendencies.

Aniagboso said the hospital has been upgraded to a specialist unit attached to Anambra State University Teaching Hospital, Amaku, Awka and that the construction work on new buildings have already begun. The contract is being handled by Vivid Construction Company.

He said further: ‘’Governor Peter Obi and Mr. Leo Imoka’s made Agulu to be chosen as location for the construction of Agro Processing and training centre for livestock feed production in Anambra State . This is a Federal Government project under the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. We are very privileged that our town was chosen from-Anambra State for the siting of dye project. The FMARD has given us the size of the land required for the project. We have approved the land and final documentation and drawing of survey plan is in progress. They promised to start work on the site soonest’’.

He further informed that a maternity ward will be constructed in Agulu by the state government under a UNICEF programme sponsored by   Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. He said three plots of land were mapped out for the project. The survey plan has been handed over to them and work on the site will start soonest.

The Agulu President General added that chairman of ASWAMA, Mrs. Njideka Oraedum, has been briefed on the benefits of including Agulu (Nwagu area in particular) under the State Capital coverage area on daily sanitation. He said Obi had spent over N40 million in schools in Agulu.

On fencing of Agulu Town Hall , he said ,’’ they have commenced work on the fencing of Agulu Town Hall . The fencing work included provisions for the new gates to be installed and a security house also be constructed. We are also installing protectors in windows and doors on both sides of the hall. Our target, all things being equal, is to relocate the workers in the pencil house back to the Town Hall before the end of this year.

Agulu community will have its website by March, barring any unforeseen circumstance.

He said one of their major challenges is security but thanked Obi for donating three security vans for the community which he said has assisted ,’’our security men record success in their fight against crime. They have caught some armed robbers and kidnappers within Agulu and its boundaries. We are still making efforts to improve on our success’’.

He said: “Roads in Agulu including Nneogidi-Nise road is completed.  Obeagu-Agulu Aguiyi road is completed. Obeagu/Nkitaku-Ronasco road is equally completed.Work has finished on Madonna-UgwuUgolo road. Through our diplomatic efforts, the governor approved a spur to Nkwo Agulu which was not included before in the design of the road. Work is currently in progress. Nwancbi-Obeledu road work is in progress. Contract for General Hospital road (passing through Nkitaku/Obe/Amoji/ Odidama and Nneolia has been awarded and work has started. The construction of the Agulu lake bridge with two walkways is in top gear. The plan has provision for the installation of street lights on the bridge’’.

‘’Civil work is currently on course at the site and it is expected to be completed and handed over to the Anambra Stale Government by the contractor, a Chinese company, at the end of February 2014.”

Anambra community residents desert homes as masquerades go berserk

MASQUERADES in African setting and Igboland in particular are seen as the reincarnation of some late heroes acting as guardian angels for the individuals and families they represent. More importantly, they are a huge source of entertainment with their electric dancing steps. But these seem not to be the case in Awba Ofemmili, a community in Awka-North Local Government Area of Anambra State, where masquerades have literally become purveyors of sorrow, tears and blood.

Awba Ofemilli, one of the communities submerged by last year’s floods, is located in the midst of thick forests. More than 60 per cent of the community was submerged in the floods, leaving thousands of its inhabitants homeless. It is a community that has suffered from lack of development, while the little development brought by Christianity is being obliterated by some youths who are followers of its numerous masquerades.

In Awba Ofemilli, masquerades are generally regarded as supreme beings. But a particular masquerade known as Obianuchichi (night masquerade) is a nightmare to many residents of the community, particularly at the end of the farming season. The appearance of Obianuchichi is usually heralded by another group of masquerades known as Adugala. Women are forbidden from seeing them as they go about singing and dancing.

The mood in the community changes immediately the announcement is made that Adugala would be coming out. The women abandon whatever they are doing and run into their houses. There must be no light or sound other than the ones produced by the masquerades.

The practice is one that has given the Christian population in the community a lot of concern over the years because all religious activities are paralysed once it is 6 pm. At a time, an agreement was reached with the leaders of the community to extend the deadline to 9 pm. But penultimate Tuesday, the masquerades and their worshippers went berserk, burning down churches and severely injuring about 60 Christians, including a two-year-old boy.

The Christians and other inhabitants of the community who are not loyal to the masquerades have since deserted their homes. They have sought for refuge in other climes for fear of being attacked further. An unconfirmed report alleged that one person died as some masquerades and their youthful followers attacked some churches in the community where vigil was being held.

Eye witness accounts said the victims were either shot at or attacked with machetes. The rampaging youths also burnt down about 10 churches. Some of the churches burnt were: Assemblies of God Church, Grace of God, Deeper Life Bible Church, Winners’ Chapel, Christ Holy Church, St. Paul’s Catholic Church and the vicarage for the parish priest of St. Paul’s Anglican Church in the community.

When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the Anambra State Police Command, Emeka Chukwuemeka, said the incident had been brought under control. He also said that no arrest had been made yet.

A victim and Parish Priest of St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Awba Ofemmili, Rev. Pat Odinanwa, whose vicarage was burnt, said there were threats of more attacks on Christians in the community. He accused the policemen at the nearby police post in Ugbene community of not coming to the aid of the hapless Christians when the trouble started, even though they were informed about it.

“The police was informed about it but they did not come. I think those boys are their regular customers,” Rev. Odinanwa said.

He said all the efforts he made to calm the rampaging youths down and ensure peace in the community failed, noting that the clash was borne out of the hatred that idol worshippers in the community had for its Christian population. He alleged that in spite of the fact that an agreement was reached between the church and the leadership of the community, the idol worshippers were determined to stop Christians from worshipping in the community.

He added: “The Christians are working together more than before. And there had been a document signed between the traditional ruler and the Christians which states that prior notifications by the masquerades should start by 9 pm and no woman should be seen along the road by that time. And we all agreed on that as signed.

“Another town crier went and announced another thing, saying that anybody going for night programme in the church should leave by 5 pm, which is contrary to the agreement. But that is for the women, because the men are free to move at any time. They were ordered to get to the church before 9 pm. In fact, on the first day, most of the women who attended the programme were stopped and harassed on their way and ordered to go back. Those who left by 6 pm were able to get to the church before it was late.”

The priest said he had cancelled the night programme scheduled for that day and told those who were already in church to sleep there. But some youths stormed the church and attacked members with guns and machetes.

Another victim, Mr Sunday Aliuba, said they were in the church when some miscreants struck, attacking them and inflicting machete wounds on them before they ran for dear lives.

Aliuba said: “Oba-Ofemili and the Christians had an agreement that the night masquerades would not be starting their activities until 9 pm, and we were having our programmes according to the rules. But on Monday night, I was at the crusade when it was rumoured that the idol worshippers would be burning down all the churches in the community.

“Around 11 pm, they started shooting sporadically, causing everybody to shiver. Around 1 am on Tuesday, they stormed the church and razed the parish priest’s house. Then they started pursuing everybody in the church. We hid under the stair case and under the pews.

“In self-defence, we pounced on one of them. As things got hotter, my colleagues ran away. I also ran, but they pursued me and shot me in the legs, shattering my ankles and bones. They also inflicted machete wounds on me. The blood that came out of my body can fill two buckets. It is only God that is sustaining my life till now.”

A community leader and former Supervisory Councillor for Health in Awka North Local Government, Ignatius Okafor, described the incident as bizarre, saying that the community condemned the action of the invaders.

Okafor said: “One person was said to have died from gunshot wounds. These people committed arson and we have never seen such hatred between brothers.”

He confirmed that there was an agreement between the late Igwe John Akabueze with Christians that church activities would not be disrupted until 9 pm when masquerades and their followers would start their activities. “But the incident occurred at 5 pm. So, it was premeditated,” he argued.

He said the problem had been on in the community for more than 10 years but was never in the same magnitude.

The Regent of the community, Chief Anaelo B. Nwanelo, admitted that the clash was avoidable, adding that peace efforts had been futile for years. But he said that efforts were still being made to restore peaceful co-existence between Christians and idol worshippers in the community.

He said: “This problem has been recurring in August of every year, but I have prevented it from escalating. But because I was called by the men of the State Security Service (SSS) for an official issue, I was not around to quell it as usual.”

The member representing Awka-North and South in the House of Representatives, Hon. Emeke Nwogbo, has since gone on inspection tour of the deserted community. He described the incident as pathetic, stressing that he would do everything within his powers to ensure that the hoodlums who perpetrated the destructions were brought to book.

He visited the Regina Caelie Hospital where some victims were being treated and settled their hospital bills of over N150,000. He also promised to assist them further.

Nwogbo said: “This is very pathetic. It is a very strange thing happening at this time and age. It is honestly a very sad situation, and I promise that we will do everything in our power to ensure that this doesn’t happen again. First, we will seek an amicable resolution to ensure that it doesn’t happen again. But the miscreants who have done this to victimise other people in the society under any guise, we will ensure that they are brought to book.”

The SecretaryGeneral of the community, Mr. Chidebe Tobias, however, debunked claims that there had been frictions between idol worshippers and Christians in the community. Tobias said: “There had never been any problem between the villagers and the Christians. We used to live in peace. This community is known for peace. We are already treading the path of peace.”

Some of the victims, who spoke at Regina Caeli Hospital, Awka, claimed that their houses were vandalised and looted. They appealed to Governor Peter Obi; the member representing Awka North in the House of Assembly, Hon. Rebecca Udoji; and Awka North Local Government Chairman , Hon. Joy Enweluzor, among other individuals, to come to their aid.

Peace talks were held between the leaders of the community and Christian leaders were scheduled for Friday last week, but the church leaders did not turn up for fear of the unknown. The Anambra State Commissioner for Environment and an indigene of the community, Sabastin Okoye; the President General, Chukwuma Nwabufo; and the Regent, Anaelo Bernard Nwanelo, were at the said meeting.

A community leader and former Supervisory Councillor for Health in Awka North Local Government Area, Ignatius Okafor, confirmed that there was a meeting and uneasy calm in the community. He blamed the crisis on three cult groups in the community.

He told The Nation that there was need for peace in the community, saying that the President-General had earlier warned those who belonged to the cult groups to renounce it for the progress of the community, as he would not hesitate to invite the police against them.

  • Anambra community warns Kogi

The people of Aguleri Otu community in Anambra East Local Government of Anambra State have warned their Ibaji, Kogi State, neighbours to stop attacking them.

The community said despite the government‘s efforts to curb the crisis, the people of Ibaji reportedly attacked them on Wednesday.

The people said enough is enough.

There has been a bloody crisis between the community and Ibaji in Kogi State.

According to a source, the people have respected the government enough without going to war with Kogi people.

The source said: “We will not continue to allow our people be slaughtered like goats.

“We are also men, what ever the people of Ibaji want, we will give them now.

“We decided to lie low because we have been following government directive, but we cannot allow this to continue.

“Even some of the police and soldiers deployed in the area were discovered to be their people and that is why some of them are not making any attempt to stop the crisis.

“Two days ago, they started burning down our houses again but some of the mobile policemen shot into the air and they ran away, leaving behind some of their weapons.

“We are not cowards and that is why we are saying enough is enough.”

The Anambra State Government has sent relief materials to the community.

The materials were shared to Enugwu Otu Aguleri, Eziagulu Otu Aguleri and Mkpunando Otu Aguleri by the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).

The Director of SEMA, Nwabufor Ijezie, said yesterday that the relief materials were 15 bags of beans, 15 bags of rice, 15 bags of garri and 100 kilogrammes of maize.

The materials were presented by the Special Adviser to Governor Peter Obi on Political Matters, Fidelis Okafor, Chairman of Anambra East Local Government, Chinedu Obidiegwu at the Enugwu Otu Aguleri Centre.

More relief materials, according to Ijezie, are likely to be approved by Governor Peter Obi soon.

  • Anambra community cries out over erosion

Anambra community cries out over erosion

Umueri Community in Anambra East Local Government Area of Anambra State is on the verge of total collapse following the erosion that has ravaged it.

As a result, some of the villages in the area have been cut off from their neighbours including the road to the palace of the traditional ruler, Igwe Nelson Okoye.

Meanwhile, the community has fixed the final burial right of the monarch next month. However, the community has expressed the fear of how to cope with visitors that will attend the burial ceremony because of erosion.

Newsextra gathered that the monarch died in 2001 immediately after the communal war between Umuleri and Aguleri, two neighbouring communities. The war was said to have claimed many lives while property worth billions of naira was destroyed.

The rebuilding process had been on in the two neighbouring communities but the major problem, according to 66-year-old Daniel Onuigbo, is the erosion issue which had persisted in the land.

Some of the roads in the community collapsed as far back as 20 years ago without any help from anybody.

Though, an indigene of the community who, according to 76-year-old widow of the monarch, Florence Okoye, has come to the rescue of the community, residents are still clamouring for the attention of the state government.

The community has over 10 villages, but the erosion menace has taken over areas like Gabriel Road, Shell Road and Nenyi, among others.

Okoye’s widow said: “There was nothing my late husband did not do to make the state government to work on these roads. All his efforts failed because it was the time anger was so high in the area because of the raging war.

“And since then, some of these roads have been abandoned and we have been leaving like refugees in our land. Weeds have taken over all the roads. We used to go to our neighbouring communities through very narrow track roads. But today, God has touched the heart of Benneth Emeka one of our sons who lives in Port Harcourt to remember his people.

“We have nothing to thank him, but only God can reward him. At least, my late husband will now rest in peace after his burial in December.”

About three roads are currently being constructed in the area by Benneth Emeka; a contractor who owns New Idea Construction firm based in Rivers, Aba and Imo states.

He has finished the earth work on the three-kilometer road popularly called Ring Road, while the 350-meter long Igwe Okoye Road would be completed before the end of this month.

It is expected that Governor Peter Obi would inaugurate the roads. With this gesture, his call for wealthy individuals in the state to come home and invest had started yielding results.

For 64-year-old Samuel Emeka, it has been a long journey for the people of Umueri community, as most of the roads are not motorable except the Otuocha Road which was constructed a long time ago.

He said: “We thank God that this young man has decided that our monarch will finally be buried by giving us road. It is unbelievable that an individual is building roads a government has failed to build.”

When Newsextra visited the sites, the construction firm was still at work. Benneth Emeka said: “Now that I have done the earth work, I am appealing to our governor to come to our help especially on the Ring Road by tarring it.

“Erosion has been the major source of worry in this area and I am constructing the roads because of the love I have for my people.

“We cannot wait for government to do everything for us. Before now, they were impassable, but we thank God for everything,” he told Newsextra.
