  • ‘Our rejection of Atiku’s endorsement by Ohaneze is apolitical’

The Anambra Government says its rejection of the Ohaneze Ndigbo’s endorsement of Alhaji Abubakar Atiku has nothing to do with politics or Mr Peter Obi.

The Anambra Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Mr C-Don Adinuba made the clarification at a press briefing in Awka on Monday.

He said that the clarification was necessitated by the story making round the media and instigated by the group that the state rejected the endorsement of Atiku, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, because of his running mate, Obi.

He said that the state had not in any way made reference to Obi directly or indirectly in any of its interviews on the issue.

“The government and people of the state are disheartened by decisions of Ohaneze to desecrate the memory of Zik which coincided with the date the endorsement was made,” the commissioner said.

He said that efforts were made to reach the Leadership of Ohaneze to shift their time to 7pm as it was not fair to hold the meeting by 10am when they knew the President was visiting the state.

The commissioner said that the appeal of change of time was to give Anambra delegation, the opportunity to partake in the meeting but they hurriedly held the meeting scheming out Ebonyi and Anambra.

Adinuba said that the Obiano government was not bothered about who the Igbo Apex Social Cultural group pitched tent with, rather the timing of their meeting coincided with President Muhammadu Buhari’s visit to the state.

Adinuba said that the Ohaneze leadership led by Chief Nnia Nwodo should have taken into consideration that Zik of Africa was being honoured on the same day of their meeting.

“Wisdom should have been applied by the leaders to give honour to whom, it is due,” he said.

He said that Ohanaez Ndigbo was supposed to be part of the delegation receiving the President on such a remarkable day.

He pointed out that for 23 years, many administrations had come and gone without giving due consideration to completing the mausoleum and on the day of its commissioning, ohanaeze desecrated the memory of a worthy son of Igboland.

“The act is considered a sacrilege or a sabotage, Zik is the only patron of the group and he was insulted by his own, so sad,” he said.

Adinuba described the action of the Chief Nnia Nwodo led Ohanaeze Ndigbo group as a `political fraud’ saying that Ohanaeze should not be political and should stop endorsing political candidates.

He said that Ohaneze had in the past endorsed Jonathan, Shagari and they never won the elections, so they should stop.

In a swift reaction, Chief Damian Okeke-Ogene , President of Ohaneze Ndigbo in Anambra said that the reactions of the state government was not reasonable.

He said in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that at first instance, the group was not in the know about the President’s visit and its timetable.

Okeke-Ogene said that the group had observed all its due process in holding meetings from Abuja, Enugu and concluded its program.

He said that the meeting was statutory and would not have been cancelled for anything and said that they honoured the request of time change from 10 am to 4pm.

He said that the group had been endorsing candidates before now like other geopolitical zones.

“We endorsed Obiano and urged that the North should complete their tenure before going to South,” he said.

Okeke-Ogene said that Obiano was enjoying the endorsement of Ohaneze ndi Igbo and wondered what changed.

Also, Chief Chris Eluemunoh, the immediate past President of Ohanaeze said that the group was desecrated by the state government for not involving such important group in a special visit like that .

He said that at their level, nobody from the group would attend any function not invited and said that political leaders should learn how to respect their foundation. (NAN)

  • …Anambra govt. not part of communiqué endorsing Atiku —SSG

The Anambra  State government in  disassociating  itself from the  Ohaneze Ndigbo endorsement of  Alhaji Atiku said the group’s communiqué did not reflect the “position of the people and government” of the  state.”

The Secretary to the State  Government (SSG), Prof. Solo Chukwulobelu, said in a statement in Awka  that “it is deeply regrettable that the Ohaneze leadership has chosen to go down a divisive trajectory capable of setting back Igbo unity for several years.”

He added: “The position of the Anambra State government is that Ohaneze should remain a united umbrella for all Ndigbo, and should not take sides with any party.

“There are major leaders in all political parties, including the three major ones in Nigeria, namely, All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), All Progressives Congress ( APC) and PDP.”

The SSG said that Governor Willie Obiano had sent a delegation to attend the Imeobi meeting summoned by the organisation in Enugu.

“Our delegation arrived early enough to participate in the meeting of Imeobi scheduled to start at 7 p.m. on Thursday.

“We were surprised to learn that the meeting had been held earlier and lasted for a mere 30 minutes.

“The representative of the Ebonyi State government, Dr. Eric Kelechi Igwe, who arrived at the venue before the time the meeting was scheduled to start was also surprised that it had already taken place.

“The same goes for others like the Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, and the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige.”

Chukwulobelu said that they were shocked that the meeting was even slated for a day President Muhammadu Buhari was campaigning in Anambra and Enugu states.

He said that Buhari’s visit to Anambra was to honour Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, First Republic President of Nigeria, and the leadership of Ohaneze Ndigbo was expected to participate actively.

“We were, indeed, surprised that the Imeobi meeting could hold today (on Thursday) of all days.

”We had expected Ohaneze leaders to participate actively in the inauguration of the Zik Mausoleum, Onitsha, Anambra State,” he said.

Chukwulobelu said that the mausoleum which had been under construction for the past 23 years was completed by the Buhari’s administration which was a big honour to Azikiwe, an Igbo man.

  • Anambra govt, traders in war of words

Traders in the Onitsha Electronics Market in Anambra State have protested the imposition of high revenues on them by the government.

The protesters, led by Simon Okonkwo, marched on the Government House in Awka to drive home their anger.

They accused Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Christian Madubuko, of causing confusion in the market by trying to impose an unpopular leadership on them.

The traders said Madubuko dissolved the leadership of the market and established a caretaker committee to oversee market activities, only to reinstate the sacked leadership days later.

They said: “The commissioner is causing confusion in the market. We don’t understand why somebody can be talking from two sides of his mouth.

“This commissioner came to the market and instituted a caretaker committee to oversee the market affairs. But shortly after, he came back and dissolved the committee without giving any explanation.

“The next thing we heard was that he had reinstated the former leadership and asked them to start organising election for Saturday.

“This is arbitrariness; we can’t take it from anybody. That’s why we are here to let the governor know this development and call his commissioner to order because we will resist this imposition.”

But Madubuko described the protesters as fraudulent individuals who want to reap where they did not sow.

He said the government lost about N110 million to a fraudulent revenue collector who paraded himself as a market leader and issued fake receipts.

Madubuko told reporters that he had instructed the Department of State Service (DSS) to arrest the culprit anywhere he is cited.

“These things will never end until we jail one of them and that process has already started,” Madubuko said.

  • Tension Mounts, as Anambra Government seals off two Banks

There was tension Wednesday in Awka, following sealing off of two commercial Bank in the State by the officials of Anambra State Government over debts.

The two commercial banks are Ecobank Plc and Skye Bank Plc located opposite the Government House in Awka and zik Avenue respectively.

The action was as a result of the banks inability to pay the land use charges levied on them by the state government.

As a result, commercial activities were paralyzed at the banks while customers were disappointed as they could not transact businesses for the day.

The closure which was carried out by the Anambra Property and Land Use Charge (APLUC) followed an order of an Awka Magistrate Court presided over by Magistrate. O.E. Maduka.

Addressing reporters shortly after the operation, the Head, Human Resources and Administration/Media, Mrs. Chinenye Okafor, said the banks as well as a residential building owed the state government over Six  Hundred Thousand Naira.

Okafor said that the financial institutions deliberately ignored the court summons sent to their offices as well as hearing notices.

Furthermore, APLUC claimed that no representative was sent by the organizations during the court trial.

She said that a total of N226, 047 consisting of property rate, tenement rate, ground rate as well as infrastructural development and maintenance fee were due to Ecobank Plc between 2011 and 2012 for payment.

Also, Skye Bank Plc located along Ziks Avenue, Awka also owed the state government a total of N238, 077 between 2011 and 2012 for the same land use charges.

Okafor further disclosed that the state government had so far secured 14 judgments to seal-off residential buildings in Awka and two other judgments for buildings in Onitsha.

According to her, “Very soon, list of defaulters in Nnewi will be prepared and actions will follow”.
