  • Anambra poll: ANPP, CPC withdraw from APC merger

The All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) in Anambra State have pulled out of the All Progressive Congress (APC) merger ahead of the November 16 governorship election in the state.

The state Secretary of defunct ANPP, Mr. Mike Igwilo, made this known to journalists in Awka on Thursday.

Igwilo said the party was pulling out because it was not consulted in all the activities leading to the merger and the recent primaries in the state that produced Sen. Chris Ngige as the flag bearer.

“We are marginalised in the party and not carried along. For this reason, we find it difficult to explain the merger to our supporters who now float like sheep without shepherd,” the News Agency of Nigeria quoted the ANPP chief as saying to journalists.

Igwilo said that ANPP would make public its next plan of action before the end of September.

At a separate news conference, the state Chairman of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), Mr. Chuba Ikeagwu, told journalists that the party had joined the newly formed People’s Democratic Movement (PDM).

He said the APC did not give a level playing ground for other merging political parties to compete for the governorship ticket in the primaries, alleging that only the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) controlled the party machinery in the state.

“There is no equity in the sharing of positions, ACN dominated and took everything,’’ Ikeagwu alleged.

Anambra: Ngige, three others battle for APC ticket

The newly registered All Progressives Congress has continued to grow in lips and bounds in Anambra State, as preparations for November 16 governorship election in the state gather momentum.

Already, four candidates are now battling for the party’s governorship ticket, especially from the Central and South Senatorial Zones in the state.

Those vying for the position are – the former governor of Anambra State, now a Senator representing Central Senatorial Zone, Dr. Chris Ngige, Mr. Godwin Ezeemo (a philanthropist), the Deputy National Chairman of (APC) (South), Senator Annie Okonkwo and Hygers Igwebuike.

However, members of the party in the state are calling for free and fair primaries to give aspirants a level playing field.

They contended that it would be proper to give any aspirant irrespective of his zone the chance to grab the party’s ticket since those already at the helm of affairs are from the central.

  • PDP holds Anambra primaries August 24

Ahead of the Anambra State governorship election slated for November 16, the Peoples Democratic Party in the state has fixed its primaries for August 24.

The PDP Chairman in Anambra state, Prince Kenneth Emeakayi, said the primaries would take place in Awka, the state capital.

Emeakayi spoke with reporters on Thursday at the party state secretariat in Udoka Housing Estate, Awka.

He added that the local government primaries, an exercise that is expected to produce delegates for the state primaries, would hold on August 12.

“We are still screening the aspirants, 15 had already bought their nomination forms and returned while some of them have been cleared to contest the governorship election.

“Some people are alleging that the party has a consensus candidate already, but I am telling you right now that there is nothing like that, everybody must go to the field to face the members,” Emeakayi said.

Anambra: PDP rakes in N186m, screens 17 aspirants

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has raked in N186 million from 26 aspirants that initially indicated interest in the November governorship election in Anambra State.

A total of 26 aspirants paid N1 million each for the expression of interest form, raking in N26 million for the party.

At the close of nomination on Monday, only 17 of the aspirants had eventually paid for the N10 million nomination form, totaling N170 million.

Prominent among the aspirants are Senator Andy Uba, Nicholas Ukachukwu, Akachukwu Nwankpo, Sylvester Okonkwo, Obinna Uzor, Charles Odunukwe, Jerry Ugokwe, Senator Emmanuel Anosike and Mrs. Josephine Anenih among others.

Nine of the aspirants failed the first hurdle as they could not pay the N10 million nomination fee. Consequently, they have been excluded from the screening exercise.

As at press time on Tuesday, the 17 aspirants were still undergoing screening at the party secretariat by a five- man committee, headed by Alhaji Aminu Wali.

Zoning and consensus option are the two contentious issues that have pitted the party leadership against the aspirants.

While a handful of the aspirants said they would go along with the decision of the party leadership over zoning and consensus option, majority of them have insisted on a level playing field for all.

  • Anambra: Over 90,000 multiple registration cases detected – Jega

Anambra: Over 90,000 multiple registration cases detected – Jega

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, said in Abuja on Monday that the commission had detected 93,526 multiple registration cases in Anambra ahead of the November 16 governorship election in the state.

Jega made the fact known during an interactive session with civil society organisations and the media on voters’ registration optimisation.

He said the figure, which had been removed from the voters’ register, represented five per cent of the registered voters in Anambra.

He said the offenders would be prosecuted as INEC was collaborating with the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) to bring the perpetrators to book.

“This exercise is starting with Anambra and would be done nationwide before the 2015 general elections,’’ the News Agency of Nigeria quoted Prof. Jega as saying at the interactive session.

The INEC chairman identified underage registration as a major problem affecting smooth registration in the country.

He expressed concern that in many communities where multiple registrations occurred, INEC officials were helpless after threats by some members of the communities.

He said, henceforth, all voters’ cards would be issued and collected at the local governments with age identification by the electorate to minimise electoral fraud.
