Anambra guber: Group cautions politicians against inflammatory utterances

The Social and Integral Development Centre (SIDEC) has cautioned political actors in Anambra State against the use of hate speech and the spread of disinformation/fakenews as the November 8 gubernatorial election approaches.

SIDEC, a non-governmental organization that promotes democracy, transparency and inclusive governance called on candidates, especially those from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and All Progressives Congress (APC) to refrain from making inflammatory remarks that could escalate tensions in the political environment.

Executive Director, Ugochi Agalaba-Ehiahuruike, in a statement regretted that hate speech and disinformation/fakenews pose a serious threat to democratic values and social cohesion, undermining the foundation of a stable society.

She described promotion of unity and understanding among candidates and voters as essential to ensuring a fair and inclusive electoral process.

“Creating a peaceful electoral environment is a key responsibility for political leaders.

“We encourage all candidates to focus their campaigns on issues important to voters, such as security concerns, rather than using divisive rhetoric.

“Hate speech, especially, damages democratic principles, divides voters, and jeopardizes social stability.

“The Centre thereby urges all political leaders to embrace respect and cooperation, reminding them that their actions significantly influence the electorate and the health of the democratic process.

“By promoting dialogue and understanding, candidates can help create a more positive political discourse that increases voter participation and trust in the electoral system.

“As the gubernatorial election nears, SIDEC remains dedicated to monitoring the political scene and advocating for a campaign environment rooted in tolerance and inclusivity, which are vital for the development of the State.

Anambra guber: PDP to produce challenger against Soludo amid internal crisis

Despite ongoing internal challenges, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is gearing up to present a formidable candidate against incumbent Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, in its rescheduled governorship primary on Tuesday.

Governor Soludo, seeking a second term, will fly the flag of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), while the Labour Party has chosen former NIWA managing director, Dr. George Moghalu, as its candidate following its primary held last Saturday.

In the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Nicholas Ukachukwu emerged as the winner of the party’s primary, securing 1,455 votes to defeat his closest rival, Valentine Ozigbo, who polled 67 votes.

For the PDP, internal strife between Hon. SK Udeh-Okoye and Senator Samuel Anyanwu over the position of National Secretary led to a delay in the primary, which was initially scheduled for April 5 but shifted to April 8.

The uncertainty discouraged many aspirants from obtaining nomination forms, fearing complications with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) possibly not recognizing Udeh-Okoye’s signature.

Although the Supreme Court recently nullified the lower court decisions that sacked Anyanwu, this came after the deadline for submission of nomination forms to INEC, further narrowing the party’s options.

PDP Deputy National Youth Leader, Timothy Osadolor, confirmed that only three aspirants submitted nomination forms two weeks ago. However, when contacted on Sunday, the PDP’s national publicity secretary, Debo Ologunagba, declined to disclose their identities or comment on the party’s prospects in what is shaping up to be a three-horse race among APGA, APC, and the Labour Party.

Meanwhile, Ambassador Jude Ezenwafor, the only known PDP aspirant who has visited the party’s national secretariat, declared that he is on a divine mission to rescue Anambra from insecurity and political instability.

He said: “I’m called because of what is happening in Anambra State,I’m called by the divine; I have been watching with keen interest what is happening in Anambra State, the insecurity and the dirty kind of politics that is happening in Anambra State, so, I am on a rescue mission.

“I want to show that I bring the light, Anambra State is the light of the nation.;I want to bring the light back to Anambra State.

“I have a five point agenda that bothers on security, business and investment, empowerment of the youth and financial technology with agriculture: I have great plans and you will see what Anambra State will become in the next three years,” he declared.

He also expressed confidence that contrary to pessimistic assessments of the PDP’s chances in Anambra, the party is growing stronger at the grassroots, with a strong chance of replacing the incumbent administration in Anambra state.
