‘Rule of law should prevail in Anambra PDP’

Anambra State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain Patrick Afubera enjoins the two parties laying claim to the party’s leadership to abide by the Supreme Court’s judgment in the interest of democracy.

The Supreme Court is the apex court in Nigeria. Under Section 287(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) enjoins all authorities and organs in Nigeria to obey the judgment of the Supreme Court. In the fallout of the political crisis in the nomination of candidates in Anambra State for the 2015 elections, two parallel primaries were conducted to nominate flag-bearers of the party to contest the election. One of the primaries was conducted by the embattled Anambra State Executive Committee of the PDP led by Ejike Oguebego. The other primary was conducted by the National Executive Committee of the PDP. The primary conducted by the said National Executive Committee of the PDP saw the emergence of Dr. Andy Uba, Stella Oduah, Obinna Chidoka and others as candidates for the election. On the other hand, the primaries conducted by the Anambra State Execuitive of the party led by Ejike Oguebego produced Chris Uba, John Emeka, Annie Okonkwo, Charles Odedo and others.

Before the primaries were held, Chief Oguebego had approached the Federal High Court, Abuja, presided over by Hon. Justice Chukwu. The Federal High Court in that case made an order restraining INEC from accepting any list of candidates emerging from primaries conducted by the Caretaker Committee set up by the PDP in Anambra State except the list emanating from the primaries conducted by the Oguebego led State Executive of the party.

There was an appeal to the Court of Appeal, Abuja, in respect of the matter that originated from the Federal High Court. At the Court of Appeal, Charles Odedo, one of the persons that emerged from the primaries conducted by Ejike Oguebego applied to be joined in the appeal. His application was refused and dismissed. He further took his grouse to the Supreme Court, asking the Supreme Court to make him a party in the proceedings. The Supreme Court now had an opportunity to make a definitive pronouncement on the status of the primaries conducted by Ejike Oguebego led Anambra State Executive Committee of the PDP as opposed to the one conducted by the National Executive Committee of the party. The pronouncement of the Supreme Court can be found and reported as Odedo v. Oguebego (2015) 13 NWLR (pt. 1476) 229 at 265-267 where the Supreme Court per Ogunbiyi JSC stated thus:

“It is the submission by the Appellant’s counsel that his client is a necessary party because he has substantial interest in the substantive appeal and a real and cogent connection, association or interrelation with the subject matter such that he will be materially affected by the outcome of the appeal. It is the Appellant’s contention also for instance that the interest he seeks to protect is a right to contest the 2015 general election. This is explicitly projected on the facts deposed to on the affidavit evidence in support of the motion for joinder at page 1060 of the third volume of the record of appeal wherein paragraphs 8 and 13 are specifically relevant and said:

    • That I took part and won the PDP primary election which was conducted under the Chairmanship of Ejike Oguebego, in line with the guidelines set by PDP for its primaries and INEC regulations.
    • That my name was forwarded by PDP to INEC. that my name was also published by INEC as the candidate who won the primaries under the Chairmanship of Ejike Oguebego.’

It is intriguing to restate that the entire reason for the application is predicated on the facts contained therein in paragraphs 8 and 13 of the affidavit supra. However, it is revealing also that the above averments have serious and legal implications on the appellant’s application. it is deposed to clearly on the same affidavit per paragraph 1 that the deponent is the applicant in this application. At paragraph 9 of the said affidavit it is also confirmed by the applicant that :

“Ejike Oguebego is the substantive Chairman of PDP in Anambra State…”

On the affidavit evidence before us, the appellant has clearly shown that his emergence as a candidate for the election was as a result of the primaries conducted by the Anambra State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party.

As rightly submitted by the 4th respondent’s counsel therefore, the appellant has hoisted his application for joinder on the primaries conducted by the State Chapter of PDP.

This court had an occasion to consider the propriety of the Anambra State Executive Committee of PDP conducting a primary election for the nomination of the National Assembly candidates to fly the flag of the Peoples Democratic Party in an election. This was in the case of Emeka v. Okadigbo (2012) 18 NWLR (pt. 1331) 55 or (2012) LPELR 9338 (SC) page 36. In that case, it was held that the Anambra State Executive Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party has no right whatsoever to conduct National Assembly primaries….

Suffice it to say that it is the National Executive Committee of the PDP that is imbued with the responsibility for the conduct of the party’s National Assembly primaries. Any purported attempt to conduct such primary by the state chapter of the PDP cannot be validly characterized as competent. The act is totally illegal and will confer no right as it is a nullity and also constituting an abuse of court process.”

INEC as a responsible organ of the State is bound to give effect to the above-cited Supreme Court decision, especially when the Commission was a party in the proceedings. It would be totally unlawful for INEC to accept list of National Assembly candidates from Chief Oguebego, the Chairman of the Anambra State Chapter of the PDP, the judgment of Hon. Justice Chukwu of the Federal High Court notwithstanding. This is so because the judgment of the Supreme Court arose from the proceedings conducted by Hon. Justice Chukwu being relied upon by Chief Oguebego.

  • I was not sacked by Supreme Court – Oduah

I was not sacked by Supreme Court – Oduah

Sen. Stella Oduah On Friday in Abuja, described as “a misinterpretation”, media reports which quoted a Supreme Court judgment to have sacked her and other federal lawmakers from Anambra.

Reports in the media said that the apex court had ordered the replacement of Oduah and other federal lawmakers from the state saying that their nomination to contest in the 2015 election was wrong.

In a statement issued by Cynthia Ferdinand, Press Secretary to the Senator, Oduah said that the report in the media was misleading as the apex court did not order the withdrawal of her certificate of return.

She said that the judgement of the Supreme Court said that it was only the National Executive Council of a political party that had the legal right to sponsor candidates in an election.

Oduah, therefore, stressed that she and all the other lawmakers from Anambra state have not been sacked by the Supreme Court contrary to media reports.

‎“It is pertinent to note that this is a mere misinterpretation of the Supreme Court rulings and‎ should be disregarded in all entirety‎.

“The Supreme Court did not order the withdrawal of the Certificates of Return issued by the Commission.

“It did not hold that the faction of the PDP had the right to sponsor candidates for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“It did not equally authorise the Commission to substitute our clients with the individuals whose names were on the list improperly allowed by the Commission,

“Series of judgment of the Supreme Court of Nigeria states that it is only the National Executive of the party that has the vires to sponsor candidates,” she said.

Meanwhile, the solicitors to the nine lawmakers allegedly sacked, have written to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to also fall into the folly of misunderstanding the judgment.

The letter signed by the lawmakers urged the commission not to allow itself to be misled by its legal department just as it was initially misled to accepting the list presented by the state chapter of the party.

The lawmakers stressed that separate rulings of the Supreme Court including that of Jan. 29, upheld that only the list submitted by the National Executive Committee was valid.

“This correspondence is aimed at setting the record straight so that your good self will not again be misled by your legal department into unjustifiably occasioning an unnecessary confusion in the process.”

The letter also drew the attention of INEC to pages 4647 and 48 of the judgment of the Supreme Court to further butress the point that the couurt did not sack their clients.

The solicitors stated further that the apex court did not authorise the Commission to substitute the lawmakers’ names with the individuals whose names were on the list improperly allowed by the Commission.

NAN reports that the media was awash with reports that the Supreme Court had sacked the nine remaining lawmakers from Anambra state.

Anambra PDP members jubilate over Supreme Court judgment

The mood in Anambra state is that of joy and sadness Friday, following the Supreme Court judgment that removed senators Andy Uba, and Stella Oduah from the National Assembly.

But the Chief Chris Uba camp who benefited from the judgment is bubbling with the members of the party pumping champagnes in the state in celebration.

Members of the party in the state Friday, described the judgment as the handiwork of God, having suffered in PDP in the hands of those they described as cabals, being engineered by a member of the national body.

Some of the roads including adjourning streets were blocked by the PDP faithful loyal to Chief Chris Uba’s camp Friday.

The implication of the judgment, according to a Chieftain of the party, Chief Nnamdi Okoye, was that Ejike Oguebego would take over the leadership of the party as chairman in the state, while Chris Uba and his line up during the primaries would take over their seats at the National Assembly.

Also, the five members in the Anambra state House of Assembly who were not in the lineup of Chris Uba would equally vacate their seats for former Assembly member, Hon. Rebecca Udorji and others.

The members of the PDP especially those at the Oguebego lineup were seen in virtually all the joints Friday in Awka purchasing assorted drinks and foods to passers bye and friends.

The chairman of the party in the state, Chief Ejike Oguebego, described the verdict as the will of God, while thanking members of the party for their patience all the while.

Also, he commended the Supreme Court judges for painstakingly going through the Anambra PDP scenario before arriving at their verdict, adding that it showed that God would never abandon his people.

But those in the camps of senators and Uba and Stella Oduah were speechless, as none of them agreed to speak to The Nation on the judgment.

  • PDP chieftain carpets Metuh over comments

PDP chieftain carpets Metuh over comments

The administrative secretary of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra State under the leadership of Ejike Oguebego, Hon. Prince Ajulu has taken the National publicity secretary of the party, Chief Olisah Metuh, to the cleaners for his comments against the All Progressive Congress (APC).

The PDP chieftain, who is a lawyer, accused Metuh of being afraid of his own shadow.

Metuh, had on November 18, 2015 in a press conference at Abuja, claimed among other things that Nigerians are witnesses to the increasing muzzling of opposition by APC, using security force, judicial persecution.

Also, he claimed that the party was using other devious means aimed at decimating PDP to pave way for the imposition of one party state all, according to him was in desperate bid to retain power in 2019.

According to Ajulu; “I’m surprised that this same Olisah Metuh who is the brain behind the manipulation of judicial process in suit No: HIH/6/15, Ken Emeakayi vs PDP, illegally imposed him on Anambra.”

He alleged that Metuh did such in also desperate bid to retain self in the National Working Committee (NWC) in 2016 as what he described as life member, adding that it surprised him that Metuh was talking about muzzling opposition.

These were contained in a message sent to The Nation Monday and equally copied to the members of the national executive council (NEC) of the party.

It was also copied to National Acting Chairman of the party Uche Secondus, Chairman, Board of Trustees (BoT) and members of the (NWC) of (PDP).

  • Anambra PDP: One party, two chairmen

Anambra PDP: One party, two chairmen

Correspondent NWANOSIKE ONU writes on the controversial Anambra State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) congress and how the crisis is troubling the party.

There seems to be no end in sight to the crisis rocking the Anambra State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The leadership battle is between two Princes—Ken Emeakayi and Osy Ezenwa, who are factional chairmen. Many believe that the crisis may weaken the party.

The crisis could be traced to 2003 when former Governor Chinwoke Mbadinuju cursed the party for denying him a second term ticket.

Mbadinuju’s battle with some stakeholders made former President Olusegun Obasanjo and other PDP leaders to offer the ticket to Senator Chris Ngige through his political godfather, Chief Chris Uba.

The former governor rained curses on the chapter, saying that it shall never be well with the party, unless the injustice meted out to him is reversed.

The party is trailing behind the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), in terms of strength and cohesion.

Amid the crisis, many stakeholders are planning to defect to the APC.

Allegations of embezzlement, anti party activities and insensitivity against some stakeholders have polarised the fold. Some members are even in court against the party. The litigations have further deepened the crisis.

Recently, the PDP national leadership sent some officers to Anambra State to conduct ward, local government and state congresses to reposition the party, ahead of the 2017 governorship elections.

During the congress, which was conducted by Mr. Ike Abonyi, the leader of the delegation, Emeakayi became the chairman, leading 26 officers in the executive committee.

Emeakayi’s leadership has the backing of the PDP National Working Committee (NWC). But some stakeholders organised their own congress to appoint Ezenwa as the paralled chairman.

As if that was not enough, Another group, led by Ejike Oguebego, laid claim to the party’s leadership. They tendered a court order to strengthen their position.

Oguebego said the purported congress was a sham, adding that it should not have been held in the first place because his tenure still subsists till next year.

The three factions are being propelled by Chief Chris Uba for Oguebego group, Prince Arthur Eze, Sir Emeka Ofor and others on the side of Comrade Tony Nwoye and Ezenwa, while Chief Olisa Metuh, Senator Uche Ekwunife, Chief Peter Obi and are others on the side of Emeakayi.

The congress was adjudged the most peaceful in the state. There was a huge turnout in the 326 wards and 21 local government areas.

The only difference was that the key chieftains were behind the curtains of the congresses, unlike before when they would be in their various communities organising same.

Former Vice President Alex Ekwueme, the leader of the party, is not being carried along on these moves, although the factions claim he had knowledge of every decision taken by their camps.

So far, none of the big wigs has come out to condemn the intrigues going on in the party.

The new moves have led to the suspension of big wigs by the factions. For instance, the Emeakayi group suspended the PDP governorship candidate in the 2013 election, Comrade Tony Nwoye and Ezenwa.

Others affected by the suspension include Chief Ejike Oguebego, Chief Basil Ejidike, former member of House of Representatives, Mrs. Jessy Balonwu, Hon. Kenneth Arinze, Hon Uche Ogbonna, Barr Chuks Okoye and Dr Tony Akachukwu, a former secretary of the party.

The suspension letter was signed by Hon Chief Emma Oguaju, the Assistant Publicity Secretary of the group led by Emeakayi, which according to them, was in compliance with Chapter 10, Article 57 (3) of the PDP Constitution 2012 as (amended).

The faction led by Ezenwa has suspended the National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, based on allegations of anti-party activities.

The group said it was also in compliance with the constitution of the party as quoted by the other group.

Among the allegations levelled against Metuh are that he worked against former President Goodluck Jonathan during the last presidential election. He also castigated the former president and his wife, it was alleged.

The group alleged that Metuh challenged Jonathan to give an account of his stewardship as President after he lost to President Muhammadu Buhari.

These allegations were worrisome to Emeakayi, who banned Nwoye and his group from contesting any elective position in the party for two years.

Ejike Oguebego, who was purportedly suspended alongside others, said that Emaekayi lacked the power to suspend anybody because they are not members of the party based on court judgement.

He described the members of the group as jesters, who are working for their pay-master, Metuh, to destroy the PDP in Anambra State, adding that he was never elected as the chairman.

But, for Emeakayi, the other groups were paid agents of APC who want to kill PDP to give way for the party to take over Anambra state.

Emeakayi said: “We are aware of the plans by the APC to employ every means to distract and to discredit Chief Olisa Metuh and Senator Ike Ekweremadu to deny the PDP a credible voice in its new opposition role”

“We pass vote of implicit confidence on our leader, Chief Olisa Metuh, and urge him to ignore the antics of the APC and continue with his good works alongside other members of the PDP National Working Committee”

“Since the APC and their agents have made Chief Olisa Metuh their target, we call on the security operatives in Nigeria to ensure security and safety of Chief Olisa Metuh and members of his family”

However, a chieftains of PDP, Chief Chike Anyonu, said that the party was heading to its end in the state because of the macabre dance of the stakeholders.

He said: “We have already failed, some people are paid to destroy this party, PDP is doomed in this state, certainly, PDP cannot go anywhere again”.

“On what offence are you suspending members and at the same time telling them to face panel, it does not go like that”.

Some members believe that it is only Emeakayi, who has what it takes to lead the party in the state because of his doggedness and his mobilisation prowess.

  • Anambra PDP crisis: Uzodike declines position

The crisis in the Anambra State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is yet to abate as former Governor Peter Obi’s nominee for the party’s secretary, Chief Joe-Martins Uzodike, has declined the position.

In a statement in Awka yesterday, the former commissioner for Information and Culture said his resignation was due to personal reasons.

His letter reads: “I hereby decline my nomination for the position of state Secretary due to personal reasons.

“I shall continue to offer my services to our party, especially, towards its reunification, rebuilding, and reinforcing, thereby ensuring that we become one flock, one shepherd, with a focus devoid of personal interest but that of the party and our state, Anambra.

“Power must not only belong to the people but must be seen to do so. Thank you and God bless”.

Chairman Prince Ken Emeakayi denied knowledge of Uzodike’s decision.

A source, however, said Uzodike could not have accepted the position with the crisis ravaging the party. He described Uzodike as a disciplined man.

  • Anambra PDP members clash over leadership

Anambra PDP members clash over leadership

The leadership crisis in the Anambra State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has deepened, with the clash of two rival factions yesterday in Awka, the state capital.

The clash reportedly occurred when the 11-man National Integration Committee, led by the party’s former National Chairman, Dr. Amadu Ali, visited the state.

Other members of the committee include former Information Minister Prof. Jerry Gana; former Rivers State Governor Celestine Omehia and Chief Shaibu Oyedokun.

It was learnt that trouble started when State Chairman Ken Emeakayi addressed the committee and Southeast Vice Chairman Col. Austine Akobundu (rtd.) in tow.

But when factional Chairman Ejike Oguebego stood up to address the members, he was reportedly stopped. This angered his supporters, who allegedly queried the “insult” on their leader.

A melee ensued among members of both sides.

But Ali was said to have intervened, preventing a bloodbath at Emmaus House, venue of the meeting.

PDP’s national leadership inaugurated the committee to reconcile estranged members ahead of next year’s elections.

The committee was also mandated to woo back aggrieved members, especially those who defected to other parties.

The party’s National Assembly members were represented by Charles Odedo and Eucharia Azodo.

It was learnt that Emeakayi was beaten up by members of Oguebego’s faction.

The fracas was said to have occurred when the committee was rounding off its deliberations.

  • Anambra PDP suit: Judge withdraws

Justice H.A Nganjiwa of the Federal High Court, Port Harcourt, yesterday excused himself from the Anambra State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) primary election matter he is handling.

Nganjiwa ordered that the case file be transferred back to Awka, the Anambra State capital, where the matter originated.

He cited the resumption of the normal court sitting as reason.

PDP’s counsel Mecha Kalu expressed pessimism on the continuity of the matter, but promised to forge ahead with the case.

“As far as I am concerned, this case is as good as dead; we will go and slug it out back home. This was the reason we insisted that the application challenging the jurisdiction of the court be taken first.”

Charles Onyeabor, who appeared for the plaintiffs, lauded the decision, saying it was the proper thing to do.

Two parallel PDP governorship primary elections were held in Anambra State by factional leaders, Ejike Oguebego and Ken Emeakayi for the November 16 governorship elections.

The election conducted by Oguebego produced Senator Andy Uba as its candidate while Emeakayi’s produced Tony Nwoye.

The national PDP executives recognised the Emeakayi-led executives and accepted the outcome of the election and the candidate it produced.

The Oguebego-led executives approached the vacation court in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, asking it to grant an order urging the PDP and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deal with it as the rightful state executives.

The suit equally asked the court to restrain the party and INEC from recognising Emeakayi as the state chairman, and not to accept the result of the election he conducted, claiming that the result and the emerging candidate were products of illegality.

Nganjiwa ordered parties to comply with the May 3, Federal High Court, Awka ruling.

He told parties about a petition from Ike and Ike Chambers Enugu, asking him to withdraw from the matter.

Yesterday, Justice H.A Nganjiwa ruled that the case file be returned to Awka, the place where the matter originated.

He said it was proper to do so, saying Awka is not within the jurisdiction of the Port Harcourt Federal High Court.

The judge noted that he heard the matter initially because it was a vacation court and since there was no vacation court in Aw

  • Amid crisis, Anambra PDP prepares for poll

Amid crisis, Anambra PDP prepares for poll

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has released its timetable for the November 16 governorship election in Anambra State. But the crisis rocking the troubled chapter may rob it of victory, reports Assistant Editor AUGUSTINE AVWODE.

The crisis-ridden Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has an agenda in Anambra State. The party chieftains have vowed to reclain power at the November 16 governorship election.

The party will be locked in the battle for the governorship with the new mega opposition party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the ruling All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA).

For the PDP chieftains, the ego of the party has been deflated by its persistent electoral failure to capture the number one seat.

The PDP is not perceived as the main opposition party in Anambra State. The performance of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in the previous elections has reduced the PDP’s influence in the state.

As a demonstration of its readiness to win back the state, the PDP recently released its timetable for the proposed contest in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). At the meeting presided over by the National Chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, the party announced that the sale and return of the ‘Expression of Interest (EoI) Form’ would take place between August 1 andAugust 5. The price is N10 million each. Then, the state congress to pick the party’s candidate will hold on August 24. The submission of the candidate’s name to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is on Friday, August 30.

    Repeat of 2010 experience

Barely two days after the release of the time-table, 27 chieftains obtained the forms. This may translate into a rancorous primary election. The development immediately sent strong signals that the party has serious challenges to contend with, if it must make good its promise to win the state back from the APGA, or deal with the threat posed by the All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Senator Chris Ngige.

A chieftain of the party, who spoke with The Nation on the condition of anonymity, said that he is worried because the development portends grave danger for the party. He said the large number of aspirants is worrisome.

“The party would like to win the state, but I tell you, as an individual, I am not comfortable with the large number of people who purchased the form within two days. Curiously, almost half of them are women. Where have you seen that before, if not that somebody already has a hidden agenda? There we go again. I pray there is no repeat of the 2010 fiasco.”

But at the close of work on August 5, when the sale of the nomination form closed, only a little above half of the number who obtained the form were able to meet the conditions stipulated by the party, including the payment of the N10 million for men and N5 million for women.

A source said: “But for the financial hurdle, the whole exercise could have gone hay wire by now. In 2010, the Expression of Interest Formwas N250,000.00 while the nomination form was N3 million. It was the highest in the country then and it caused some uproar.

“This time, the party had to quickly deal with the situation, once they discovered that some people were bent on causing mischief. Only about two-third of them were able to meet the condition. With a multitude of aspirants, it would create confusion. But even then, the danger is still not yet averted. Those who sponsored hair dressers to take the first form may be out there devising other means to ensure that, if they fail to clinch the ticket, the party goes down. That was what happened in 2010. We must avoid a repeat. And the party must act accordingly”, he said.

    Consensus candidacy

Party sources said that the reason for the large number of aspirants was to force the party to consider the option of consensus for the choice of the party’s candidate. But, the national leadership of the PDP had, during the meeting with the party’s stakeholders, resolved not to pick its flag bearer through a consensus arrangement, preferring to go through the party primaries.

The aspirants include the former student activist, Dr Tony Nwoye, Senator Andy Uba (Anambra South), Afam Onwuanyi from Nkwelle Ezunaka, Oyi Local Government Area, Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu from Osumenyi, Nnewi South Local Government Area, former federal legislator Nze Akachukwu Nwankpo from Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area, and Obinna Uzor from Ihiala Council Area, Walter Okeke from Nanka, Orumba North Local Government Area, Ugochukwu Okeke from Ihiala, South Senatorial District; Senator Alphonsus Igbeke from Nsugbe, North Senatorial District, and Dr Alex Obiogbolu from Onitsha North.

How to ensure a united house after the primary election is one of the challenges the party would face in the days ahead. A source in the state told The Nation that the party may have succeeded to a large extent in checking the effect of the large number of aspirants. “The fact is that the high cost of the form has indeed, succeeded in considerably reducing the danger and threat posed by the deployment of stooges and proxies by desperate individuals. Nobody knows their next trick. The party must act smart now, or else, it would find itself in a position where it is late to do anything to stop the opposition from getting to the Government House, Awka ahead of us”, he said.

    Factionalisation of PDP

Another challenge confronting the PDP factionalisation. For now, there are two major factions. Some chieftains are parading themselves as the authentic chairmen.

Prince Kenneth Emeakayi is the chairman recognised by the electoral commission. But a section of the National Working Committee (NWC) has claimed that Ejike Oguebego is the authentic chairman. The implication of this is too grave to be underrated. Whether theparty likes it or not, it must find a solution to the leadership crisis.

Already, it was resolved at the party’s stakeholders meeting in Abuja that the factions should submit their membership lists. The goal is to harmonise the lists and arrive at a complete membership list for the August 21 primaries. As a condition, each faction must not only have membership cards, but must produce the evidence of financial membership. Party leaders believe that it the only means of preventing fake party members from participating in the primaries.

    The Soludo experience

Former Governor of Central Bank Prof. Charles Soludo was the PDP governorship candidate in the 2010 election. Recently, he defected to the APGA. Analysts fear that, unless the PDP moves to put its house in order, there could be a repeat of the Soludo experience in the party on a larger scale immediately after the November 16 election. The emergence of Soludo in 2010 caused disaffection. Many of those who contested with him openly declared that they would work against the interest of the party. Some of them carried out their threats.

Senator Uba left the fold for the Labour Party, emerging as the flag bearer. He came a distant third in the election. If he had stayed in the party and joined forces with Soludo, the party would have won the election. That Soludo waited this long before jumping ship is indicative of the direction of things in the party in Anambra State.

Anambra PDP elders are worried about the likely outcome of the primaries. They are troubled by their past experience. The elders, it was learnt, are pushing for a thorough screening of the aspirants.

They also want some criteria to guide the screening pannel. A party source said that the party also want PDP to anticipate post-primary crisis and eveolve means of revolving it to prevent chaos.

    True reconciliation

Another thing that the party must do in the state is to ensure that it carries out a true reconciliation of aggrieved members in the state. The party must take advantage of two things. The Governor Seriake Dickson-led PDP Reconciliation Committee can assist in bringing about truce in the party. Also, the Board of Trustees(BOT) members, including Second Republic Vice President Alex Ekwueme, Senator Onyeabor Obi, Josephine Anenih and Chief Maxwell can reconcile the factions.

  • Anambra PDP fixes governorship primaries for Aug 24

Ahead of the Anambra State governorship election scheduled for November 16, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has fixed its primaries for governorship aspirants for August 24.

The State Chairman, Kenneth Emeakayi, who spoke with reporters yesterday in Awka, said the local government primaries will take place on August 12.

Emeakayi added that the governorship aspirants will address party members today at the Dr Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka.

He said: “We are still screening the aspirants, 15 have bought their nomination forms and returned.

“Some people are alleging that the party has a consensus candidate but I am telling you right now that there is nothing like that. Everybody must go to the field to face the members.”

The Chairman said the party has no room for any form of manipulation, adding that the contestants had given their commitment to the national leadership.

“This issue of consensus has denied the party its share of progress. Anybody who knows he is popular in the eyes and minds of the electorate should go to the field; the proposed primaries will be free and fair.

“Those who are contesting the November 16 governorship election will come to Ekwueme Square and address party members. This party has suffered a lot and we are not going to continue like that,” he said.

A Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship aspirant in the November 16 election in Anambra State, Senator Andy Uba, yesterday said he would win the election.

He spoke with State House correspondents at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, saying that PDP lost in 2010 to the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) because the house was divided.

Uba said he was not bothered with the present scenario where many aspirants are interested in the election.

He said: “PDP did not lose in Anambra State in 2007, the court only told PDP to wait until APGA finishes. In 2010, we lost to APGA because we did not put our house in order but this time, we are all together and am sure definitely we will win the state.

“I have won it before in 2007 and I have been elected senator twice. I believe I’m the frontrunner and I believe I will win. After the primaries, we will all agree and sign the form that says that whoever emerges from the primaries, we will support, we don’t have any other way than to support PDP.”
