    Police nab 54 suspects in Anambra

    • N10million drugs recovered

    Anambra State Police Command has arrested 54 suspects in Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area.

    The suspects, comprising 39 males and 15 females, were nabbed during a raid of black spots.

    The command’s spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, said at a press conference yesterday, that the suspects were undergoing screening and profiling, after which those found culpable would be charged.

    He said the operatives of Special Anti-Cult Squad (SPACS) also arrested a 25-year old man, Chiderah Obochi, Enugwu-Ukwu along Old Onitsha/Awka Road with some quantities of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.

    “Upon interrogation, he confessed to being a drug runner in Umudioka Village, Dunukofia Local Government Area. He led the team to the house of the one Ginika Okeke in Umudioka Village, but the suspect was not met at home.

    “However, 11 bags containing a very large quantity of dried leaves suspected to be Cannabis Sativa (Indian Hemp) worth N10million were recovered from the house.

    “The recovered hard substances will be handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further necessary action.

    “The command is also working on credible intelligence to identify and apprehend drug dealers supplying these harmful substances,” he added.

     Ikenga attributed the trend partly to declining levels of parental supervision and poor guidance over their children and wards.

    He said the command has intensified surveillance, patrols, and intelligence-gathering to nip such incidents in the bud.

    “In addition, the command has strategised further by adopting kinetic and non-kinetic approaches.

    “These include inviting individuals suspected to be with cult groups for questioning, as well as conducting targeted raids on drug hideouts.

    “The abuse of hard drugs remains a major driving force that emboldens youths to commit heinous crimes.

    “On behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, the Command reassures Ndi Anambra of her commitment to restoring sanity, protecting lives and property, and ensuring that the state remains safe for all law-abiding residents,” Ikenga stated.

    Anambra Police arrests female student for staging self kidnap to help boy friend

    The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 28-year-old female student of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) and her 30-year-old boyfriend, Chinecherem Aronu, for allegedly staging her own kidnapping in a plot to extort money from her family.

    According to police investigations, the female suspect faked her abduction to help her boyfriend raise funds to start a business.

    She reportedly got the idea after watching a movie and decided to carry out the plan by contacting her family and claiming she was on her way home from school, only to later go into hiding with her boyfriend in a lodge near UNIZIK Temp Site, Awka.

    In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) tracked the location of the suspects through intelligence-led efforts following a report of her disappearance on July 8, 2025.

    Ikenga said the victim’s family had received a call the following day from an unknown male voice—later identified as the boyfriend—who demanded a ransom of ₦10 million. After negotiations, the amount was reduced to ₦3 million, and a partial payment of ₦1 million was made into the victim’s personal bank account.

    “Upon arrest, the suspects confessed to orchestrating the fake kidnap as a scheme to extort the victim’s family,” Ikenga stated. 

    “The female suspect said she acted out the plan to help her boyfriend raise capital for his business.”

    The Police Command warned that such criminal acts, even if self-inflicted, would be treated with full legal consequences and urged the public to desist from engaging in deceptive practices.

    Female drug dealer, five others nabbed as police burst trafficking syndicate in Anambra

    The Anambra State Police Command has arrested six suspects, including a female drug dealer, after bursting a drug trafficking network in Isuaniocha, Awka North Local Government Area of the state.

    The Command’s spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, who disclosed this yesterday, said the suspects were apprehended during a raid by operatives in the area.

    He said large quantity of dried leaves suspected to be hard drugs and other incriminating hard substances were recovered during the operation.

    He added that all the suspects would be transferred to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Awka for further necessary action.

    He said: “Police Operatives attached to the Special Cultism Squad, Obosi Sector in the early hours of 30th May, 2025, while acting on credible information, burst into a drug trafficking network.

    “During the raid, six suspects, including a female drug dealer, were arrested and a large quantity of dried leaves suspected to be hard drugs and other incriminating hard substances were recovered in Isuaniocha, Awka North Local Government Area.

    “The suspects include Chinyere Onwuka ‘F’ aged 32 years, John Kennedy Onwuka ‘M’ aged 36 years, Chidiebere Onyeze aged 30 years, Echeazu Nonso ‘M’ aged 35 years, Osita Chukwu Chialuka ‘M’ aged 21 years and Nnebedum Wisdom ‘M’ aged 25 years.

    “The Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu frowned at the relative rise in drug consumption by the teeming youths and noted that drugs are the oxygen that drive most crimes and bad behaviour exhibited by individuals.

    “He expressed willingness to step up advocacy against illicit drugs through a Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices (POCACOV), a programme targeted at sensitising the youth on the dangers of drugs and other vices in the state.”

    Two arrested for supplying food, weapons to criminals

    The Police Command in Anambra State has arrested two suspects who allegedly supply food items and weapons to criminal gangs in the state.

    Superintendent of Police Toochukwu Ikenga, the Police Public Relations Officer, in a statement in Awka, the state capital, said one of the suspects was intercepted by a police-led joint security force on routine patrol at the Pillar-Pole, Aguata, Awka.

    The police spokesman said the suspect was carrying three bags of ‘garri’ and a large quantity of gunpowder when he was apprehended.

    “Apart from the gunpowder, which was concealed in ‘garri’ bags’, one local pistol and live ammunition were recovered from the suspect. Preliminary information reveals that the suspect was en route to a criminal camp to deliver the items when he was apprehended,” he said.

    He further said personnel of the Special Anti-Cultism Squad, apprehended a suspect when they stormed a criminal hideout in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area.

    He said the squad, which acted on credible information, recovered one locally fabricated pistol with two live ammunition from the suspect. Ikenga said the suspects were currently in police custody, and would be charged to court after investigations.

    He said  the Commissioner of Police Nnaghe Itam had zero tolerance for crime, and was committed to making the state uncomfortable for criminals.
