Police to deploy adequate personnel for Anambra guber poll

The Inspector-General of Police, Mr Ibrahim Idris, on Wednesday, said adequate personnel would be deployed for the Anambra governorship election scheduled for Nov. 18.

Idris, who disclosed this at the monthly meeting with Commissioners of Police and above in Abuja, did not, however, give the number of the personnel to be deployed.

“The Anambra governorship election is going to involve all police commands. It is going to be a massive deployment for the election,” he said.

“It is very important to prepare for the election. We are going to adequately take care of security in Anambra,” he said.

He said that all police commands across the country would be involved in the election.

On deployment of personnel, Idris directed all commands commissioners of police to address the indiscriminate deployment of personnel to individuals and corporate bodies in their commands.

“You must check the deployment of personnel to ensure it complies with the Police Act and regulations.

“We are going to take absolute control of our officers attached to Very Important Personalities (VIPs) across the county,” he said.

He charged the commissioners to monitor deployments of personnel to avoid illegality, adding that they were in charge of deployment of personnel in the commands.

The inspector-general urged the officers to be committed to the security challenges confronting the country.

He also enjoined the commissioners to always ensure that adequate security was provided for personnel working under them.

Idris said that the kidnap of some police officers recently in Niger was embarrassing to the entire Police Force and the country.

He said that all commissioners of police henceforth would be held liable for the kidnap of their officers.

The police boss advised commissioners of police to always ensure that policemen were deployed to flash points in their various commands.

In a related development, the inspector-general has presented a Cheque of N17 million to 10 out of the 1,285 next-of kins of deceased police officers who died in active service.

He said that N 3 billion had been released for the payment of the beneficiaries who had been screened to get between N 1 million and N6 million.

Idris said that the category of officers and men who benefited fell within the group Life Assurance Scheme started in 2004 and when payment began in 2012.

He said that the Federal Government had appropriated N5 billion in the 2017 budget for the settlement of 2013,2015 and 2016 arrears of death benefit of officers.

  • Anambra poll: Who is afraid of Obaze?

Anambra poll: Who is afraid of Obaze?

In this piece, Cyriacus Okoye examines the chances of the People Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Osekola Obaze, in the November 18 governorship election in Anambra State.

Our beloved State, Anambra is in dire straits; and we had better know and believe it. Coming from a refreshing relief provided by the administration of Mr. Peter Obi, we became complacent. For over three years after that era, we have been steadily sliding into the perfidy of inept management of our affairs. Indeed, it is an unprecedented betrayal of public trust.

As this unfortunate and unhappy term grinds to a halt, we have to look to the future; notably the next term of office in Government House, Awka. However, in so doing, we do not just have to hope for the best; we have to claim and choose the best in our collective interest and to restore Anambra State to meaningful progress, propriety and respectability.

A few weeks ago, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) conducted its primaries to choose a candidate for the up-coming Governorship Elections in Anambra State. While many party faithful rejoiced at the momentous choice Oseloka Henry Obaze, a few others quietly acknowledged that he was the best man for the race and position of Governor. Expectedly, easily most worried is the incumbent APGA whose candidate has done little to imprint the appellation of the State as “The Light of the Nation”.

Obaze brings impeccable credentials to bear on his campaign for the people’s mandate to be elected Governor of Anambra State. He was not only born into a responsible family, but took positive advantage of that background to improve himself and make impact on society. Educated in Nigeria and abroad, he attended such renowned institutions as Dennis Memorial Grammar School, Onitsha; Christ the King College, Onitsha; University of Nebraska, Lincoln, USA and Nebraska Wesleyan University – obtaining a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and a Master’s in Political Science & International Relations. Going further, undertook a number of professional courses in some famed institutions in Nigeria and Europe; with specialties in Dialogue, Mediation and Conflict Resolution, among others. These include: Nigerian Foreign Service Academy, Lagos; UNITAR/International Peace Academy, Austria; UN System Staff College, Italy (1999); and Folke Bennadotte Academy, Sweden.

Obaze’s working experience has taken through some strategic appointments and assignments – in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the United Nations System, Anambra State Government and Management, project & Financial Consultancies. In the processes, he has not only acquired wide experience, but added tremendous value to the operations of the organisations he served.

A man of proven integrity, Oseloka has been acknowledged across the world for his professionalism, competence, dedication and leadership. Among others, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he was known for his high principles, dedication and commitment to duty such that his relocation to the UN system was a fait accompli. Similarly, the UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon observed about Oseloka: “In your long distinguished career … you have proven yourself as a most dedicated, dependable and competent staff member ..  you have unfailingly upheld the highest standards of efficiency, competence required of an international civil servant”.  Back home as Secretary to Anambra State Government, he, among other attainments, transformed the Office in what it is meant to be: The Chief Secretariat and  Engine Room of the State Government – with tremendous impact on governance and staff welfare. These are verifiable facts.

As a practical and practised mediator and team player, Oseloka Obaze will be a stabilising factor in our dear State that has been fractured by predatory managers in the last 3 years. In the same vein, he would be a dependable Chief Negotiator for Anambra State in the national scheme of things like the then Governor Peter Obi  did to the immense benefit of the State.

Unassuming and unpretentious, Oseloka Obaze is not a “Man Must Wack” politician. He did not leave his position as an International Civil Servant for ‘Bread and Butter” politics. He is of clear purpose, and his antecedents demonstrate clearly that he would not be swayed by parochial or vindictive considerations and pursuits. Over the years, he has firmly rejected the cult of predatory sycophancy that has been the bane of many people in places of leadership as has been witnessed in our dear Anambra State over the last 3 years or so.

Obaze’s exposure in Nigeria and internationally has equipped him with an extensive knowledge base and experience to manage Anambra State to sustainable and meaningful development. How many people know he has facilitated financial and equipment support from some international agencies for several development projects in parts of the country? With that kind of goodwill, coupled with a mandate as Governor, we should expect more for Anambra State.

With a working experience firmly rooted in corporate governance and best practices, Oseloka Obaze abhors grand-standing and grandiloquence. Knowing that a leader’s mandate belongs to the people, he is focused on good governance as a means of making positive impact on the socio-economic and political well-being of the people.

Increasingly, the world has become a global village where best practices will make the difference between progress and stagnancy. As an international civil servant of note, Oseloka Obaze has since keyed into the imperatives of managing a modern economy and society; having been widely exposed to the intricacies of modern governance, administration and management – locally and internationally.

In the same vein, he has the integrity to attract much-needed Foreign Direct Investments as well as support from Development Partners and various other donor agencies across the world. Blended with his practical experience at the Federal and Anambra State levels, he has a firm grasp of the developmental needs of the people.

Ndi Anambra, do not be deceived that any political party “is our own”. More than any other factor, the quality of the leader determines the nature of his performance. As is said of the computer, “It’s garbage in; garbage out”. Anybody given a public trust and cannot deliver in 4 years certainly cannot perform creditably in 8 years. Giving him another 4 years will have more disastrous consequences on the people and the State.

As a candidate on ground, Oseloka Obaze has made himself available for service to the people of Anambra State. This is a candidate whose qualities most other States pray for in their leaders. Ndi Anambra, it is our prerogative to make a choice, but it is in the interest of our sustained welfare that we should not miss the Oseloka Obaze advantage. That way, we would all be spared another 4 years of painful regret.

  • Anambra poll: Female candidate empowers market women

The female governorship candidate of the Advanced People’s Democratic Alliance (APDA), Adaeze Okafor, an architect, has mobilised and empowered over 5,000 market women in Anambra State, ahead of the November 18 election.

The programme was done yesterday in Awka under the auspices of Advanced People’s Democratic Alliance Young Leaders Forum (APDAYLF).

Speaking at the event at NnamdiAzikiwe University temporary site yesterday, the APDA candidate declared that she was directed by God to contest the governorship election.

The women in their numbers, especially from the market sector in the state, led by Mrs. Eunice Agunobi, intercepted her speech with praise songs.

Okafor said her major priority when elected would be to create jobs for the teeming youths by establishing industries in the state.

The coordinator of APDAYLF, Victor Chike, said the group was made up of younger men and women that were participating actively in politics, hoping to take over from the elders in the nearest future.

The women were taught how to make beads, fashion designing, confectionaries, among others.

  • Obi: I didn’t promise to fight Anambra poll with my blood

Obi: I didn’t promise to fight Anambra poll with my blood

Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi has described as malicious, wicked and ungodly the report in yesterday’s edition of a newspaper that he vowed to fight for the November 18 governorship election with the last drop of his blood.

In a statement, Obis media aide Mr. Valentine Obienyem said: “I read what was reported in the newspapers of today (yesterday) that the former Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi, said he would fight the Anambra State election with the last drop of his blood. Gosh! It is malicious and ungodly; it is wickedness of the highest order to ascribe such a language to Mr. Peter Obi. I mean, the language is antithetical to everything Mr. Obi stands for.”

The media aide said he was at the meeting and wondered why somebody put “such wicked words” in the mouth of another.

He said: “I was there at the meeting; Mr. Obi never used that word. Never! It is a word he cannot even use in his dream! We do not know where the reporter got that news from. For the sake of clarification, Obi said we would fight the election the way the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had never done before and that it would be the first time the party did one primary and that the PDP must reconcile now and go to the election as a united family. Emphasising the need for reconciliation, he said the operating word was reconciliation, reconciliation and reconciliation.”

Obienyem added: “Obi simply said he was now a member of the PDP and that he would work aggressively to ensure the success of his party, which is the position of all party members working for the successes of their parties. Obi was the governor of Anambra State for eight years and within those years, as now, he worked passionately for the growth and development of Anambra State.

“He has continued to desist from anything: be it an act or utterance that will be injurious to the state in any form. He will continue to do so.”

  • Anambra poll to hold as scheduled, says INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) yesterday assured Nigerians that the November 18 governorship election in Anambra State will hold as scheduled.

INEC National Commissioner in charge of Oyo, Osun and Ekiti, Chief Adedeji Soyebi, spoke in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, after opening an implementing meeting on the commission’s weekly radio programme.

The INEC chief said the threat by a group on the conduct of the election should be seen as a mere security challenge which security agencies would tackle.

He said: “We are ahead of time. Continuous voter registration in Anambra State has been concluded and in three or four weeks, all registered voters must have collected their voter’s cards.

“We are going to conduct the election, by law. So, the threat is just a security challenge. I am sure the security apparatus has strategised on how to take good care of it.

“The election will be one of the best they have ever witnessed.

“So, Anambra people should expect a peaceful, free, fair and credible poll.”

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, had advised the commission’s workers to step up effective voter education and publicity to ensure the stakeholders were fully informed about electoral processes and activities.

Represented by Soyebi at the meeting, Yakubu noted that the current national socio-economic challenges had a profound impact on voters’ attitude to electoral activities.

He said: “Voter disinterest or apathy is pervasive in our electoral terrain. So, we are constantly required to encourage and motivate the people to participate.

“The onus is on us to continuously remind them of the positive effect their participation can have on the polity.”

Yakubu said INEC had got approval for weekly enlightenment programmes on radio stations in all the states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

According to him, the radio is recognised as a powerful channel to reach the citizenry.

The INEC chairman said the meeting was an avenue to discuss modalities for the implementation of the weekly radio programme.

Yakubu urged the participants to continue to play effective part in educating the public on the need to participate in the electoral process through regular education, exposure and positive influences.

  • Plot to disrupt Anambra poll: Court orders service of processes on Kanu, IPOB

Plot to disrupt Anambra poll: Court orders service of processes on Kanu, IPOB

•October 9 for hearing of suit

A Federal High Court in Abuja has directed that court processes (documents) be served on Nnamdi Kanu and his group, Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), on a suit seeking to restrain them from disrupting the November 18 governorship election in Anambra State.

Justice Babatunde Quadri gave the order for service of court processes on the respondents after listening to the arguments by the plaintiff’s lawyer, Smart Iheazor, for leave to serve the processes on Kanu and IPOB outside Abuja.

Other respondents in the suit are: the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), the Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF).

The plaintiff, Dr Richard Ndubuaku, who described himself as businessman in Awka, AnambrA State capital, with property in Onitsha and other parts of the state, prayed the court to restrain Kanu, IPOB, their agents and members from making utterances or taking actions that are inimical to the conduct of the November 18 poll.

He also prayed the court to restrain Kanu and IPOB from further harassing or intimidating eligible voters in Anambra State or mobilising their members to scuttle the planned election.

Ndubuaku argued that there was need for the court to grant the orders he sought because Kanu and members of his group could carry out their threat to disrupt the election, if not restrained.

The businessman noted that if allowed to proceed with their threat, Kanu and IPOB members could cause irreparable damage to him and other innocent residents of Anambra State.

The plaintiff, in a supporting affidavit, averred that Kanu and other IPOB members “have serially made utterances and threats to disrupt the conduct of the governorship election in Anambra State this November”.

He added: “The respondents (first and second) are capable of carrying out their threat. And if this happens, many lives will be lost. And properties (will be) destroyed, which will include that of the plaintiff.

“If the defendants are not restrained, their actions may lead to confrontation. With other law-abiding citizens, who insist on electing their governor and a clash with the defendants will occasion a blood bath as there would be a breakdown of law and order.”

  • Anambra poll: Pretenders and contenders

    Anambra poll: Pretenders and contenders

As Anambra State warms up for the November 18 governorship election, Correspondent NWANOSIKE ONU examines the strengths and weakenesses of candidates on the platform of major political parties.

All is set for the governorship election in Anambra State. The poll holds on  November 18.

The political parties have concluded their primaries and candidates have emerged to slug it out with Governor Willie Obiano.

The smaller parties have also lined up their candidates to do battle with the big ones.

During the primary conducted on September 2, as stipulated by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC),  Obiano became the flag bearer of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA).

However, Obiano’s candidature is still contentious, following the claim by one Igwebuike Hygers, who allegedly emerged from the primary of a faction of the party conducted by Chief Martin Agbaso at Ezira in Orumba South local government area.

Other parties with solid candidates  are, the All Progressive Congress (APC) with Dr Tony Nwoye as its candidate and Mr. Godwin Ezeemo of the Progressive People’s Alliance (PPA).

Also, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP)’s candidate is Mr Oseloka Obaze, former Secretary to Government (SSG), while Osita Chidoka, a former Minister of Aviation, is running on the platform of the United Progressive Party (UPP).

Some of the aspirants who lost the tickets of their respective parties are still kicking, vowing not to support the winners.

Smaller parties trying to make a mark include the Hope Democratic Party (HDP) with Sam Oraegbunam as its candidate and Independent Democrats (ID) with Franklin Ndife as its candidate.

From the All Grand Alliance Party (AGAP) comes Felix Nwaezi. Oby Kate Okafor represents Advance Congress of Democrats (ACD). Oluchi Opara, a journalists with the African Independent Television (AIT), is flying the flag of the Labour Party (LP).

Ifeanyi Okonkwo who was disenchanted with what happened in (UPP), found favour in Action Democratic Party (ADP).

The interesting aspect of the contest is that two women are flying the flags of their parties; (ACD) and (LP).

The purported primary that brought the LP candidate at the Trig Point Hotel is still raising dusts as some members of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party are yet to come to terms with the exercise.

Some of them who spoke with The Nation claimed that there was no primary in the first place, adding that what the National Chairman of the party, Abdulkadir Abulsalam, did was to address a press conference where a candidate was announced.

One good thing about elections in Anambra is that politicians do not kill themselves the way it happens in other states; rather, they use propaganda to weaken opponents. They harass and intimidate their opponents.

Despite the governor’s performance, his rivals do not agree with what he has done. They believe that his best is not good enough.

However, the major contenders for the converted seat are Nwoye of the APC, Obaze of PDP, Obiano of APGA and Ezeemo of PPA.

Others are mere pretenders, who have either come to spoil the fun for some candidates or waiting for settlements.

Some of the political parties, which have chosen their candidates, are likely to collapse their structures into others as they are stooges of the major contenders.

What played out during the primaries were eye openers. Delegates from parties joined forces to sponsor delegates in different parties.

At the Prof Dora Akunyili Women’s Development Centre in Awka, where the three big parties – (APGA), (APC) and (PDP) – conducted their primaries, members of opposing parties actively participated.

The emergence of Nwoye and Obaze has instilled fear in the camp of the APGA.

But, Obiano’s outstanding performance have helped in solidifying the APGA ship in the state.

Apart from Ezeemo, one of the front runners in the race on the platform of PPA who has no godfather, other major contenders seem to have one person or the other backing them.

For the UPP candidate and former corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FSRC) Osita Chidoka, the tremendous support being enjoyed by his party through the Biafran agitators are no longer there.

The party’s primary was manipulated, which made another big contender for the ticket, Hon Chudi Offodile to withdraw from the race.

If those who lost the APC ticket like Senator Andy Uba and Chief George Moghalu come together as one body to give support to Nwoye, Anambra state is as good as being (APC) state soon.

But, Obi and his gang are unrelenting in making sure that the state returns to the PDP, which was taken from the party in 2006.

    THE CONTENDERS:

    OBIANO (APGA)

From the look of things in Anambra, Obiano is a force to contend with as the election is concerned.

The only headache the governor is having is the division in APGA with Martin Agbaso on one hand and Dr Victor Ike Oye on the other hand.

Oye does not see any competition from any quarter whatsoever, but those fighting for his seat are not just ordinary.

Chinedu Idigo, who was to replace Obi as governor before Obiano came into the fray and Dubem Obaze, who has become a political force in Anambra, having been the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters are with Agbaso.

Apart from the former National chairman of APGA, Chief Victor Umeh, there is no other known name in Anambra politics that is with Obiano. Others are feather weights.

When the opposition describe Obiano as a non-performing governor, others do not see it from such perspective.

To them, the governor has surpassed what Obi did in eight years.

The Awka indigenes see the three flyovers he erected in the capital city as a big lift by the governor. They have promised to support his second term bid.

Not only the flyovers, Obiano has built, he has continued to solidify the senator Chris Ngige and Obi.

In Anambra West, the longest bridge in the entire Southeast was  built by Obiano who also constructed some roads.

The communities are equally celebrating the 40 million naira given to them to build structures of their choice in their areas.

As a result, many people see Obiano being displaced by anybody as a herculean task in the state.

Many chieftains of different political parties are working for him underground.

Obiano is not only depending on the people for victory, he is also on his Aguleri warriors to match any security deployed to the state.

There are other things working in favour of the governor, but his choice of a Campaign Director General, in the person of Umeh, may dealt a big blow on his aspiration.

Umeh is perceived to have stepped on the toes of many people in the state, including his party members, when he was the APGA national chairman and for that, a lot of them are yet to forgive him.

Again, many people believe that Obiano is concentrating development only in his Aguleri axis of the state, while his kinsmen have flooded his government.

The powers given to some of the neophytes in the party have also not gone down well with his party men, who have used the election to set a trap for him.

Obiano remains a force in the election and any party preparing to floor him will have to work harder because majority of the people in the state see him as a performing governor which has earned him the sobriquet of “Willie is willing working”.

    NWOYE (APC):

Many youths in Anambra are rooting for him. This was the reason he emerged the candidate of the APC during the primary.

Dr Tony Nwoye has become a force in the politics of Anambra.

Before being the candidate, he had served as the chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the state. He represents Anambra East and West Constituency in the National Assembly. Nobody believed that he would snatch the ticket from Andy Uba,  Muoghalu and Barth Nwibe. The gang up from some of the contestants helped in shaping the game, which was good for democracy.

With the emergence of Nwoye as the APC candidate, the party has started counting its blessings.

The APC candidate has  large heart and knows how to win the hearts of the people.

Besides, he is loved by the youths, having led them as the President of the National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS).

The Medical Doctor has whatever it will takes to lead the APC to victory. He works closely with members of his party and those he defeated during the primary.

One of the chieftains of the party, Nze Modestus Umenzekwe, told The Nation that he has not seen the possibility of Uba working against the victory of his party man to deny APC victory.

He said if it happens, he would be denying himself the party’s ticket for the senatorial seat.

Owing to the influence of the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige and other chieftains of the party in the state, APC is sure of victory.

One thing that may count in the candidate’s favour is the support of the Federal Government.

If the support garnered by Nwoye during the primary was anything to go by, he should start preparing to take over the Agu-Awka Government House by March 2018.

Another factor that will help the (APC) in the election is that its candidate is from the North senatorial zone where the Governor Obiano comes from.

The apex-Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanzee Ndigbo in the state had ceded the governorship ticket to the North.

The arrangement helped other political parties to think in that direction. Apart from Ezeemo of (PPA) and perhaps UPP’s candidate Chidoka from the major parties, other candidates are from the North senatorial zone.

Nwoye is a grassroots politician and a great mobiliser. He is not the only one being backed by influential person, other candidates are equally in the same fray.

The man popularly called “Ayaka Nsugbe” by all and sundry is in the good stead of becoming the next governor of Anambra state.

    OBAZE (PDP)

Oseloka Obaze is a good man by all standards. He is the former Secretary Government.

A career diplomat, who goes by the acronym Oseloka Henry Obaze (OHO), now translated by the people to be “Obiano hand over to Obaze.”

Nobody gave him chance to emerge as the candidate during the  primary, save for the power game that played out involving the former governor, Mr. Peter Obi.

He contested with other heavy weights in the party such as the oil magnet, Ifeanyi Ubah, former Minister of Aviation, Senator Stella Oduah.

Others were Dr Alex Obiogbolu, believed to be the choice of the PDP faithful before the power game, Hon Lynda Ikpeazu and Prof Akaolisa Ufodike.

One obvious thing certainly played out during the primary was the internal wrangling in the party which has not been resolved.

But, the caretaker chairman of the party and former minister of health, Prof Alphonsus B.C Nwosu, really played a fatherly role during the exercise and still playing it.

The governors of Rivers and Ekiti states, Nyesom Wike and Ayodele Fayose, who came to conduct the ward primary, did not release the delegate’s list until a day to the state primary.

The action jolted the aspirants and made some of them to withdraw from the race, which paved way for the emergence of Obaze.

The PDP could not have chosen any other person than Obaze in the race. But has the candidate mastered the intrigues associated with Anambra politics? A huge question the PDP candidate will answer when the campaigns take off in matter of days.

However, with the man nicknamed the grand master by the PDP candidate is on the right track to becoming the next governor of Anambra state.

Will those he defeated support him? Already, Obi has been moving with him to their respective homes to mend fences after the primary.

Analysts believe that, if Obi forms an alliance with another political godfather in the state, Chief Chris Uba, Obaze’s victory is assured.

But, PDP  is not where you can build  trust. Already, some of the stakeholders have started working with other political parties to deliver their candidates.

When Peter Obi was the governor, many things worked for him, including having the ears of the then president, but does he still possess such powers now?

    EZEEMO (PPA)

He is a lone ranger in the race for the governorship seat of Anambra state in terms of political big wigs around his campaign train.

Also, Mr. Godwin Ezeemo does not rely on any person for financial support because; he has the wherewithal to prosecute his ambition.

The only man who has relocated all his businesses to Anambra state in the spirit of (Akurue-Uno), translated (let wealth reach home).

The only problem Ezeemo will have in the race is as a result of his party (PPA), which has not permeated to the people like PDP,  APGA or APC, believed to be bigger forces.

But, he has really endeared himself to the people of Anambra, through his philanthropic gestures and they have started embracing (PPA) with a lightning speed.

PPA also winning the Anambra governorship election come November 18 is not unthinkable because a lot of grassroots politicians have really joined the party in recent time.

Some men of God and political observers have predicted surprises in the election and the thinking of the people is towards the PPA candidate.

Another major problem the Umuchu, Aguata local government area born politician is facing is the caliber of people in his campaign train.

Most of them have not gone to work for him genuinely, but to grab his money, while some people who have made up their minds to work for him are being shoved aside.

As a result, the camp in the campaign train has been divided, which might pose a big threat to his aspiration.

Despite having the cash, Ezeemo does not believe in politics of money and does not encourage it. He says that people should dwell much on character in place of money.

Besides, he is favoured, by not coming from the North senatorial zone where the candidates will balkanize their votes.

He is the only candidate from the South senatorial zone among the contenders and that is why political observers are not writing him off from winning the election.

Many people in the state are now rooting for the businessman who never believed in the zoning arrangement by the Ohaneze Ndigbo.

He said if such a thing should start in Anambra state, it has to go to the south first because the former governor, Dr Chinwoke Mbadinuju was wronged and he came from the south.

Others who have emerged as candidates in their respective small parties included Sam Oraegbunam (HDP), Franklin Ndife (ID), Oby Kate Okafor (ACD) who is an actress and chairman of the party in the state.

Also, in the race is Oluchi Opara (LP) whose selection is still being contested by the leadership of the party, Ifeanyi Okonkwo (ADP).

For Osita Chidoka (UPP), his coming out through the party is just being contested by the leadership of the party, Ifeanyi Okonkwo (ADP).

For Osita Chidioka (UPP), his coming out through the party, is just to remain relevant in politics.

The party does not have the capacity or followership to make any inroad in Anambra state during the governorship election.

Perhaps, the former corps marshal wants to use the platform to empower some people who have not benefitted from his empowerment programme before now.

And moreover, the crisis that led to the pulling out of Hon Chudi Offodile from the primary is still hunting the party, as majority of the members including the Biafran agitators have pulled out of (UPP).

Offodile told The Nation that his action was based on lack of internal democracy in (UPP), adding that the party was being run like fiefdom.

However, The Nation further gathered that (AGAP) was formed by some political big wigs as an alternative to (APGA) to stop Obiano’s second term bid.

The party it was learnt is being financed by two big wigs in the state, which is now being served as a second platform to help (PDP) in the governorship race.

But the national chairman of the party, Hon. Okey Chikwendu told The Nation that (AGAP) is prepared for the governorship election, adding that the party is not fronting for any one.

They have chosen Felix Nwaezi to fly the party’s flag during the election, an unknown quantity in politics in Anambra state.

All the smaller parties and their candidates are attached to the four contenders and waiting for settlement at the right time.

The electorate are ready for the November 18 governorship election as well as INEC and the security operatives in the state.

The questions are who nicks it APC, APGA, PDP or PPA after the election. The four candidates are solid and willing to rule the state, will Obiano retain his seat? Or is APC coming with a force to foist Nwoye on the people? Is (PDP) back to reclaim what it thinks belongs to it or will Ezeemo and his (PPA) take over the leadership in Anambra?

The political parties are ready with their candidates after the primaries and the electorates are to make their choice.

It will be a tough battle for the incumbent governor, Chief Willie Obiano as the race hots up but the fear of the Aguleri born politician will be the beginning of wisdom for the other contenders.

However, rule out Nwoye of APC out of the equation or Obaze of PDP, then you are singing your Nunc Dinitis.

Anambra poll: Court orders service of processes on Kanu, IPOB

A Federal High Court in Abuja has directed that processes (court documents) be served on Nnamdi Kanu and his group, Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in relation to a suit seeking to restrain them from disrupting the forthcoming Anambra State governorship election.

Justice Babatunde Quadri gave the order for service of processes on the respondents after listening to arguments by plaintiff’s lawyer, Smart Iheazor, for leave to serve the processes on Kanu and IPOB outside Abuja.

Other respondents in the suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/756/2017 are the Inspector General of Police (IGP), the Commandant General of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF).

The plaintiff, Dr. Richard Ndubuaku, who described himself as businessman based in Awka, with properties in Onitsha and other parts of Anambra State, wants the court to restrain Kanu, IPOB, their agents and members from making utterances or taking actions inimical to the conduct of the election slated for November 18 this year.

He also wants the court to restrain Kanu and IPOB from further harassing or intimidating eligible voters in Anambra State.

  • Anambra poll: Chidoka receives monarchs endorsement

Former Aviation Minister and governorship candidate of the United Progressive Party (UPP) in Anambra State, Chief Osita Chidoka, has been endorsed by traditional rulers. The monarchs gave him a stuff as a symbol of endorsement.

The staff, which is the Igbo traditional symbol of power and authority, was handed to Chidoka by the Igwe of Igbo Ukwu, Dr. Martin Ezeh, at the national new yam festival; the iri ji ndi’igbo, attended by an array of South East traditional rulers in Igboukwu.

The transfer of the staff, which was vested on Governor Willie Obiano during the 2013 Anambra governorship election, and now to Chidoka is a loud and significant statement by the royal fathers, ahead of the election.

Speaking while handing the staff to him, Igwe Martin Ezeh said Anambra needs a governor like Chidoka who, he said, has “the required character, experience and commitment to refocus the state for the benefit of the ordinary people.”

He said Chidoka has shown that he has the “proficiency and political will to tackle the challenges facing the state,” adding that the leaders are convinced that, by his achievements in public service at the national level, he has the capacity to evolve and apply innovations that would create wealth and revamp the economy of the state.

The National Chairman of the  Mbido Igbo Association, Mazi Okafouzu Ugochukwu, said his association found in Chidoka the qualities of a good governor.

Oduah threatens to withdraw from Anambra governorship race

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Anambra State, Senator Stella Oduah, has threatened to withdraw from the race over irregularities in the party build-up to the primary election.

Oduah spoke at press briefing on Friday in Abuja.

She said that the Ward congress of the party held on Wednesday to elect three delegates per ward was fraught with “irregularities and sabotage.”

The ex-Minister of Aviation said as if the case of hijacking was not enough, the ultimate result of the ward congress which was submitted by the Secretary of the panel was switched for a doctored result.

“The exercise violated all known principles of democratic practice. Several complaints have continued to trail the exercise as most party faithful are disgruntled and agitated,’’ Oduah said.

Oduah said she had petitioned the Chairman of the party National Caretaker Committee, Sen. Ahmed Makarfi, over the matter and threatened to withdraw from the primary if the party fails to address the problem.

“Based on the above, I wrote to notify the chairman of my protest and intention to withdraw from the 2017 gubernatorial primaries in Anambra if the party fails to address the issues presented.

“This is because the approach employed for the party primary is not aimed at winning election.

“The implication of this is to subject loyal party faithful to stressful and rancorous primary to weaken and sap the strength of candidate that will emerge from the exercise.

“It should be recalled that this has been the reason our party has been losing gubernatorial elections in Anambra,’’ she said.

The senator claimed that only her and few other members of the party in state remained faithful during the turbulence in the party that led to litigations at the national level.

“There is no doubt that our party has undergone a torturous battle. Along the line, some wavered and many of our members dropped and a lot others left the mainstream party.

“To the glory of God, some faithful members remained loyal and determined to see to the end of the crisis.

“While some states were hard hit, the impact on others was light. In many states, members of the party were abandoned to their fate like orphans,” she added.
