  • Anambra Speaker, industrialist commiserate with victims of fire disaster

THE Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon. Rita Maduagwu and foremost industrialist, Mr. Godwin Ezeemo, have commiserated with the victims of Wednesday night in the state, and called for the relocation of filling stations close to residential buildings. The duo spoke yesterday in Awka after visiting the scene of the fire, which destroyed more than 10 buildings, including the filling station and several vehicles.

The incident, according to eyewitnesses, occurred when a tanker conveying fuel fell while negotiating the around about of the Dennis Memorial Grammar School (DMGS) junction in Onitsha. Though no life was lost, the incident left three persons were injured. Ezeemo, who is the governorship candidate of the Progressive People’s Alliance (PPA) and Maduagwu described the incident as unfortunate and sad.

One of the victims Mrs. Juliana Oboli, whose house was razed, was one of the persons that sustained minor injuries during the inferno. She appealed for help from government and public-spirited individuals, adding that she lost all her possessions to the fire. Speaker Maduagwu commended Governor Willie Obiano for providing relief packages and succor to the victims immediately after the incident. Governor Willie Obiano, who also visited scene yesterday, said that he would setup a panel of enquiry to investigate the remote and immediate cause of the fire.

Meanwhile, following the ugly incident, Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State yesterday paid an unscheduled visit to the state’s Fire Service at Otigba junction, Enugu, to ascertain its level of preparedness and efficiency in the event of any inferno or similar occurrence in the state. Ugwuanyi arrived the headquarters of the service at about 11am and was received by the state’s Divisional Fire Officer, Mr. Ambrose Okwor who took him round the premises for an on-the-spot assessment of the fire-fighting equipment and other facilities.

The governor noted that the unscheduled visit became imperative in view of the need to ensure that the service was prepared, efficient and well equipped for any kind of intervention whenever the need arises. After a thorough inspection, Gov. Ugwuanyi made available some funds to the service to ensure that there is sufficient water supply in all the trucks stationed at the premises, saying that “we are here to make sure that everything is perfectly in order in line with our responsibility to protect the lives and property of the citizenry.”

  • Battle for Anambra Speaker intensifies

The battle for the Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly is deepening.

Lawmakers and their supporters are bickering over who gets the coveted position.

Sources said Governor Willie Obiano and the National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Victor Umeh might clash over who becomes the Speaker in June.

Anambra South is seen to be the area strong enough to produce the Speaker since the governor is from the North.

The contestants are Rita Maduagwu (Nnewi South), Nikky Ugochukwu (Orumba South), Ikem Uzoezie (Aguata I) and Ikechukwu Umeh (Aguata II).

Some members said the position had not been zoned, as Obiano had shown no interest.

The Nation gathered that  Chugbo Enwezor (Onitsha North) is being speculated to succeed Chinwe Nwaebili.

A lawmaker said the most qualified for the position is Enwezor, being a lawyer and the longest APGA legislator.

But it was learnt that Obiano had interest in Maduagwu while Umeh is promoting his cousin, Uzoezie.

A lawmaker said: “Section 92, sub-section (I) says there will be a Speaker and Deputy Speaker, who shall be elected by members of the House among themselves’, therefore the issue of zoning being rumoured is unconstitutional.”

He added that it was only APGA or the governor that could call a meeting where decisions would be taken, adding that such had not happened for now.

Speaking with The Nation yesterday, a source said “the governor settled for Maduagwu, but Umeh’s chioce is Uzoezie.

“If Peter Obi had remained, the choice would have been Ugochukwu, but as things stand now, Maduagwu is likely to grab it. Some legislators are gunning for Enwezor (Onitsha North) because of his experience.

“Some of us are not comfortable with the situation because it may bring another division in APGA between Umeh and Obiano, the same thing that almost happened in the choice of Nwaebili and Enwezor in 2011.

‘There are moves by Obiano, Umeh and some chieftains of APGA on the issue, some people believe that the Speakership should move to the South, while the Central takes the next turn,” the source said.
