The former Anambra state governor was reacting during the state Assembly elections in Anambra State after casting his vote.

Obi came out to vote at about 9am but could not because of the malfunction of the card reader until about 10:36am.

He said it was the same during the presidential election when card readers did not work in many places, which INEC acknowledged and promised to correct.

“What happened two weeks ago was a contraption. It wouldn’t be a parameter to measure the performance of APGA.

“People voted emotionally and had their eyes set somewhere and followed that line and satisfied themselves.

“I don’t have problems with that. There’s one thing I believe in life, whatever will be, will be.”

The APGA boss said he was impressed with the level of turnout of voters, describing the process as smooth, peaceful and credible.

  • ‘Enough of herdsmen attacks’

Residents of Mmiata-Anam in Anambra West Local Government Area of Anambra State have raised the alarm over impending scarcity of food following incessant herdsmen attacks on the community.

The community had earlier been devastated by flood.

The people alleged that apart from destroying farm produce, the cattle herders also rape women, maim and kill locals in the area.

They called on the state government to come to their rescue in order to avert the impending hunger and starvation in the community.

A community leader, Chief Matthias Ameke said the ugly experience had been on for years, expressing fears of further loss of lives and property if the trend was not checked.

He said the latest casualty was one Alex Nwokoye, who was butchered to death while waiting for a vehicle to convey him and his fishing gear.

He said, “We used to hear of herdsmen terrorising some parts of this country until when they surfaced on our land and destroyed food products, including yams, cassava, flora and fauna which they trample upon.

“As we speak now, our farms are at the verge of extermination as virtually everything has been removed. The worst of all is that last year flood ravaged our yams, cassavas, everything wasted. These people you see borrowed from banks this year to go back to farm with the seedlings purchased, land tilled, plantations done.

“These herdsmen have come and invaded every bit of the length and breadth and removed everything to the point that cassava plants were being uprooted.

“As if that was not enough, they went about raping women in their shanties. We’ve said it before and will continue to say that we are not violent people; this is one Nigeria. We need peace.

“But we say that those who are here must obey the rule of the land. We have sacred places they have soiled. Our men have been chased away and finally they have gone as far as beginning to kill our people.

Ameke continued, “Just last Friday, a man was killed with a machete in a heinous way, leaving behind nine little children. With this, our men said there is a limit to which you can run away from war particularly when it has come to your town.

“This is our hometown. We have no other place and we are going nowhere. We shall stand here if it means fighting and dying here. But we don’t want to fight.”

Meanwhile, some group of women in their hundreds barricaded the entry points to the community to prevent what they termed unlawful encroachment.

One of them, Mrs Uduaku Felicia who spoke to The Nation, said the problem started last January when they noticed the produce in their farmlands was being destroyed by the herdsmen.

“We’ve been patient with them because we don’t want any case. We give them chance to eat grass but they don’t want to. Instead, they want to be eating cassava, yam, all those things and continue killing others. So we are so very unhappy,” she said

According to Uduaku, the decision to barricade the entrance to the community was to disallow non-indigenes without check.

“We saw soldiers who came to our town on Friday. We don’t want war, we want peace. That is why we are here.

“Anybody who wants to come into Mmiata Anam we would see the person from this point. We don’t want soldiers.”

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mohammed Haruna promised to get back to the reporter, but was unable till the time of filing this report.

“I will find out and feed you back please,” he said.

…drum support for petty trader’s son

Some group of youths in Nnewi, Anambra state on Thursday, staged a peaceful protest against what they called imposition of representatives from rich families in the community on them.

The protesters, under the aegis of Anaedo Concerned Youth Movement, Nnewi Academic Congress and Greater Nnewi Youth Ambassadors/ Graduate Partners, insisted that one Mr. Nonso Smart Okafor, the son of an akara (bean cake) frier would represent them in the State Assembly.

They said the choice of Okafor vying under the platform of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) was informed by his poor background, insisting that he would fight for the interest of poor masses if elected.

Leader of Anaedo Concerned Youth Movement, Comrade Echehome said the protest was informed by a perceived plan by an influential man in the town to impose one of the richest men on the community.

He said, “We are on this solidarity rally because we learnt that a business mogul in the industrial city wants to influence the electorate to vote for a candidate from a rich family to represent the community in the State House of Assembly “through cash and carry style of electoral process.”

“It would amount to injustice and disservice to Nnewi community to impose an unpopular candidate on the people just because he could not foot the bill.”

Echehome insisted that the youths were comfortable with the APGA candidate who they noted had made the community proud in various capacities as a youth leader.

According to him, there would be no hope for people of poor background in Nnewi in politics if any form of godfatherism was allowed.

“We are going to set a bad precedent if we allow any form of godfatherism to be part of Nnewi political ideology and representation.

“We are the youths of this community and we know who is who and nobody should tell us the choice to make.

“We are the leaders of tomorrow in Nnewi and we should be allowed to make our choice and not imposition,” he said.

Also speaking, Leader of Nnewi Youth Ambassadors/ Graduate Partners, Mr Ifeanyi Nwajide said the revolution was born out of the youths’ disgust to imposition of unpopular representative that had crippled their expected quality representation.

Addressing the protesters, Senior Special Adviser to Governor Obiano, Hon Nnamso Nwafor Orizu assured them that the State government was behind the APGA candidate for the State Assembly election despite threats and persuasion to support a candidate against their wish.

The protesters displayed placards with various inscriptions like: we need personality, not party; Nwa nwayi n’eghe akara ka anyi choro (we want the son of akara frier); Nnewi youths stand for Smart; no need for godfatherim and even okada riders want Smart; justice for the poor in Anaedo, and many other inscriptions.

The solidarity rally took the youths and okada riders to Nkwo Triangle, Nkwo Nnewi markets, streets of Nnewi community and the palace of the traditional ruler of the community, His Royal Highness, Igwe Kenneth Orizu III with positive responses from the traders and larger Nnewi community members that they supported a poor woman’s son to represent them.

  • Two remanded for allegedly attacking APC candidate

Two persons were yesterday remanded in prison custody in Onitsha, Anambra State, for alleged conspiracy and unlawful attack on the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for Onitsha North 2 state constituency, Michael Afam Emejulu.

The accused persons, Onwuegbusi Ifeanyi, 35, Chidera Uzoma, 19, and others at large allegedly attacked Emejulu.

Prosecuting Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Ugochukwu Leonard alleged that the accused on Monday, at Egerton Street, Onitsha, conspired and allegedly caused a grievous bodily harm on Emejulu.

He said the accused on the same date and venue, with intent to maim, disfigure or disable, unlawfully attacked Emejulu with dangerous and offensive weapons.

Ugochukwu further alleged that the victim was severally hit with a big hammer on the head and at the same time attacked with machete on his leg and other parts of his body, which caused him harm.

The offences, the prosecutor said, were punishable under sections 495 (a) and 288 (a) of the Criminal Code, Cap. 36, Vol. II, Revised Laws of Anambra State of Nigeria, 1991, as amended.

Before the charge was read, the police prosecutor told the court that he had withdrawn the first charge No. MO/122c/2019 bearing attempted murder as their offence, due to pressure from above and replaced it with the current charge No. MO/123c/2019, which is bearing grievous harm.

After the charge was read, no plea was taken, as counsel to the accused persons, K. K. Oguejiofor, applied for their bail, saying he was ready to produce the accused any time they were needed in court.

But the prosecution counsel, Mellitus Eze, leading other lawyers, objected to the bail application, arguing that since the court does not have the jurisdiction to entertain such a matter, which borders on life imprisonment if convicted, the court cannot also have the jurisdiction to grant them bail.

Senior Magistrate Chioma Amuluche had before remanding them in prison custody, requested to see the victim to ascertain the level of injury he sustained during the attack, and his relations went to the hospital where he was receiving treatment and brought him to the court premises in a car.

The magistrate, who came out and saw him snoring inside the car, ordered that he be driven back to the hospital.

Ruling, Amuluche ordered that the accused persons be remanded in prison custody till March 28 when the plea on the application for their bail could be taken.
