    Ekwueme laid to rest finally

Second Republic vice president,Dr. Alex Ekwueme, took his final exit at exactly 2.40pm yesterday in his home town, Oko in Orumba North Local Government area of Anambra State.

He was laid to rest in his expansive compound after a funeral service at St John The Divine Church, Oko, before a large number of mourners from all walks of life led by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

Osinbajo, head of the federal government delegation to the event, announced the renaming of the Federal University, Ndufu Alike,  Ikwo in Ebonyi State after the departed politician.

He said the decision was in recognition of Ekwueme’s selfless service to the country.

The former VP, Osinbajo said, practiced principles of personal sacrifice for others and would be remembered for many things not only by the people of the Southeast,  but the entire country.

The first son of the late politician, Pastor Goodheart Obi Ekwueme, thanked the federal government for the gesture and for making the burial a memorable one.

Preaching at the service, the Primate of the Church of Nigeria, the Most Rev Nicholas Okoh, said what the country needed to move forward was integrity in governance with its allied products of honesty, reliability.

Okoh, who led over 50 Bishops and over 100 other clerics, said if the new breed politicians could behave like Ekwueme, that the country would be a better place for everyone.

“What we need in Nigeria is integrity and its allied products,” he said.

“If you are in politics and you do it without it, you will be embarrassed and if you are in business without it, you will collapse.

“If we must rebuild Nigeria, we must bring back integrity into the system and it’s allied forces.

“Is it not a shame that countries like Rwanda, Ghana, Kenya just to mention a few are now greater than Nigeria?’

He urged rapists, kidnappers, ritual killers, cultist and selfish politicians to repent.

Former Secretary General of the Commonwealth, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, in a tribute said  Ekwueme was not the  typical Nigerian politician.

Anyaoku, a close friend of the deceased, said  Ekwueme had left a remarkable legacy in three key areas-national and international service, politics and philanthropy.

He said:”Alegi (his nickname for Alex Ekwueme) ,  thank you for your royal legacies to our politicians and the citizens of this country “

Governor    Willie Obiano of Anambra State thanked President Muhammadu Buhari and the South east governors for their dedication in making sure that Ekwueme got a befitting burial.

The presence of All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, former President Goodluck Jonathan and former Vice President,  Namadi Sambo, at the funeral, drew a loud ovation from the massive crowd.

  • We will respond to Obasanjo’s Coalition Movement at the right time – Tinubu

We will respond to Obasanjo’s Coalition Movement at the right time – Tinubu

….Obasanjo playing politics with letter to Buhari

National leader of the All Progressives Congress ( APC )  and former governor of Lagos State,  Bola Tinubu, yesterday said that the party will respond to the Coalition Movement launched by former President Olusegun Obasanjo at the “appropriate time “.

He accused Obasanjo of playing politics with his open letter to President Muhammadu Buhari, where he accused him of (Buhari) of non performance.

Tinubu who made a stop over in Owerri, the Imo State capital on his way to Anambra State for the burial ceremony of late former Vice President in the company of another APC leader, Chief Bisi Akande, insisted that Obasanjo could have exploited other better ways of communicating his observations about the Buhari’s administration other than open letter if not politically motivated.

According to the APC leader, who jocularly said that the letter was not written to him, “Obasanjo wrote it about the government. It is a very good awareness on his part and they are both from the same background. I believe that is the doctrine  of Military Officers (retired) because he has unrestricted access to the President, either through the Council of State or by any other means that he need to see the current President privately and he was his junior in the Army.  So I think Obasanjo was playing politics with his public letter that’s all I see. He could have used other means,  he met him in the AU too he has a way of discussing privately but the letter is being responded to by the government”.

Also responding to the former launching of Obasanjo’s Coalition Movement, in the brief interview with journalists at the Imo State Government House,  Tinubu,  said that it is still too early to respond to the development,

He said, “the appropriate time is not now for response on the Coalition Movement but we are in a democracy, we are in a country that is a signatory to the Charter of the United Nation which guarantees free movement, free association and free speech”.

On the reason for his visit, he stated that, “the governor is a very good friend and the government that is here is our government, the APC government. We are here to pay final  respect to the gentleman and Nationalist, Alex  Ekwueme”.

Cattle colonies not practicable in South-East – Miyetti Allah

The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria ( MACBAN ) said yesterday there was no need to set up cattle colonies in the Southeast geopolitical zone.

The Chairman of MACBAN in Anambra State, Alhaji Sadiq Gidado, told reporters in Awka, the state capital that the establishment of cattle colonies in the area was not necessary because of the harmonious relationship existing between members of the association and the residents.

He, however, underscored the need to strengthen the mutual understanding and synergy between MACBAN and the people in the zone.

Gidado bemoaned the incessant farmer-herdsman clashes in some parts of the country, saying that the two parties were coexisting peacefully in the South East zone.

He said:“Cattle breeding in Anambra is different from what obtains in other states; here in Anambra; we are working in synergy with the security operatives, the indigenes and the state government through the Cattle Menace Control Committee.

“To me, anti-open grazing bill, cattle colonies and ranches are just political creations; these concepts are created by politicians to bring disharmony between farmers and herdsmen.

“In the Southeast, the proposed cattle colonies cannot work; you cannot just take somebody’s land and give to another person to conduct his own business; it is not right.

“Here in the zone, it is virtually impossible to operate cattle colonies, as there is harmonious relationship existing between the herdsmen and the farmers.

“The cattle colonies they are talking about are already existing in the North.”

Gidado, who is a member of the Cattle Menace Control Committee, commended the governors of the Southeast states for being proactive by setting up the committee which had ensured peace.

He blamed some frictions recorded in the region on migrant cattle breeders, who were not members of MACBAN in the zone, saying that the association had put in place some measures to forestall future incidents.

“We thank the governors of the South-East states, especially the Anambra and Enugu state governors, who constituted these committees that are coordinating our activities.

“The regulation is that you only graze where there are no farms.

If you destroy farmlands intentionally or unintentionally, you must be punished for what you have done and be made to pay for what you have destroyed.

“And if the people in the communities kill a Fulani man or his cow, you pay damages accordingly; we have a good structure that enables the effective management of our members,” Gidado said.

  • ‘Obiano has done well’

    ‘Obiano has done well’

Oba Uche Ikedigwe is a High Chief from Agukwu Nri Community and a chieftain of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Anambra State. In this interview with WALE AJETUNMOBI , he praised Governor Willie Obiano for the good works he is doing in Anambra State.

Undoubtedly, Governor Obiano has performed amazingly well in Anambra State. He has improved the living standard of the people. He is a serious-minded and focused leader who is always interested in executing projects that will have positive impact on the lives of the people.

Governor Obiano is a stickler of truth and that his words are his bonds. He does not indulge in deceitful actions. Our people are solidly behind him because they know that he is reliable and trustworthy. Our people also know that Governor Obiano came to serve and to deliver dividends of democracy to them. He has justified the confidence reposed in him by Anambra electorate.

Anambra electorate’s massive vote for Governor Obiano on November 18 election was aimed at rewarding him for the good works he is doing . In the history of Anambra State, no governor has ever won the 21 local governments in an election, but Governor Obiano achieved that feat because he was able to use his first term mandate to execute developmental projects in all the communities.

People of Anambra are truly happy because Governor Obiano is doing what they expected from him. Our governor has done well in all sectors of governance, especially in the areas of security and agriculture. Many of our wealthy businessmen have embraced farming because Governor Obiano turned that sector into a lucrative one.

For instance, Cosmas Maduka, the Chairman of Coscharis Motors, Emeka Okwuosa, the Chairman of Oil Serve, Dr. Emmanuel Egbogah former Presidential Adviser on Petroleum and many others are big farmers in Anambra State.

They keyed into Governor Obiano administration’s think-home initiative and invested millions of dollars in Anambra State. On security, Governor Obiano stays awake watching over the people so that they would sleep with their two eyes closed.

APGA’s landslide victory in January 13 election

In the January 13 election APGA was destined to emerge victorious in that election. Chief Sir Victor Umeh, the APGA candidate for that election travelled a tortuous road to retrieve his stolen mandate and his efforts have been crowned with a landslide victory on January 13.

As at today in Nigeria, he is the only Senator that achieved the commendable feat of clinching victory in the whole of his local government; hence the reason his well-wishers have nicknamed him 7/7 Senator.

Victor Umeh has paid his dues in Anambra politics and he deserved the reward he got from Anambra Central electorate. You cannot talk about the success of Mr. Peter Obi as Anambra Governor without mentioning the contributions of Victor Umeh and the same thing is applicable to Governor Obiano.

    INEC’s performance

The current INEC leadership is doing well. I will narrow my judgment of their performance to the last November 18 Anambra Governorship and Anambra Central re-run election. As far as I’m concerned, the two elections are the most transparent in the history of this country. The votes of Anambra electorate counted in those elections.

Recently, Olisa Agbakoba (SAN) gave INEC pass mark for conducting free and fair election in the country. INEC leadership as it is constituted currently has won the confidence of the electorate with their unbiased role for the deepening of Nigeria’s nascent democracy. They are living up to people’s expectations and this is truly a departure from the past when INEC officials connive with electoral fraudsters to rig elections across the country.

I urge INEC to use the same template they used in conducting Anambra elections to conduct the 2019 election.

Another commendable precedent that was set by former President Goodluck Jonathan is that of good sportsmanship. Our people now go into elections with the spirit of a good sportsman that is ready to accept the outcome of the election as far as the election is free and fair. This has reduced electoral litigation and also gave the winner of the election the opportunity to concentrate on fulfilling his campaign promises to the electorate.

    Advice for Governor Obiano

To whom much is given much is expected. The expectations of Anambra people from him are much and he must endeavour to actualise those expectations. He should keep up the good works he is doing because doing that will endear him more to the people. I will also advise him to ensure the completion of all the projects he started before leaving office.

When Governor Obiano completes a project and inaugurates it, Peter Obi’s praise singers will claim that the project was Peter’s initiative.

Currently, President Muhammadu Buhari suffered the same fate after the inauguration of the Kaduna Standard rail gauge project. Governor El-Rufai of Kaduna State and Senator Ben Murray Bruce from Bayelsa State had verbal altercations in the print media over that inauguration.

So, if Governor Obiano can complete all projects started by his administration before handing over to his successor, it will be an unforgettable landmark achievement. Our people will remain forever grateful to him for doing that.

His decision to conduct local government election this year is really commendable. It is a proof of his sincere desire to ensure grassroots development in Anambra State.

    Advise for people of Anambra

My advice for people of Anambra State is that they should keep supporting Governor Obiano’s administration because their support will encourage him. Another advice I have for them is that they must make wise choice in the forthcoming 2019 general election. They should not allow their conscience to be swayed with monetary inducement. A repeat of what they did for Governor Obiano in the last November 18 election is what is expected of them during the 2019 general election.

  • Attend court Feb. 5 or be returned to prison, judge tells Metuh

Attend court Feb. 5 or be returned to prison, judge tells Metuh

Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered a former spokesman of the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ) Olisa Metuh, to attend court on February 5 or be arrested and returned to prison.

Justice Abang gave the order yesterday whiling on two applications. One by Metuh’s lawyer, Okezie Ikpeazu (SAN), for adjournment on health ground and the other by prosecution lawyern Sylvanus Tahir, seeking the revocation of Metuh’s bail for allegedly being absent in court for not cogent reasons.

The judge said Metuh had been absent from his trial since Monday without any lawful excuse. This, the judge said, was a sufficient reason to revoke the defendant’s bail.

Metuh and his company, Dextra Investment Limited are being tried on money laundering charges before the court.

Last Monday, Metuh was absent in court and his lawyer said he was on admission at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi, Anambra State. He drew the court’s attention to a letter to thate effecr from the hospital.

On Tuesday, Ikpeazu applied for an adjournment of the case to a period outside this week based on the health situation of his client, an application Tahir objected to.

Tahir described the letter from the Nnamdi Azikiwe Teaching Hospital, relied on by Ikpeazu as worthless.

He urged the court to revoke  Metuh’s bail and return him to prison, from where he should be made to attend his trial.

Justice Abang, in his ruling, noted that  the medical report  relied on by Metuh to stay away from court was fraudulently smuggled into the court’s file and aimed at forcing the court to stay proceedings in the trial indefinitely.

The judge said EFCC’s application for the revocation of Metuh’s bail deserved to be granted, but that the court decided to suspend taking such step in order to afford the defendant another opportunity “to turn over a new leaf”.

He agreed with Tahir to the effect the hospital’s letter dated January 21, 2018 indicating that Metuh had been on admission since the previous day, for treatment for an ailment, was sent to the court to frustrate the trial.

He queried why the medical report had to be issued barely 24 hours to the resumption of the trial on January 22.

The judge also queried how the letter issued in Nnewi, Anambra State, could find its way to the court’s file in Abuja within 24 hours.

He said the letter was fraudulently smuggled into the court’s file and defence lawyers chose to rely on it to ask for an adjournment yet refused to disclose the identity of the person who sent the document to the court.

He noted that the “lengthy letter” by the hospital laced with many medical terms, was meant to confuse the court.

“How will the court, not being an expert in the medical field, be able to understand it, if not to confuse the court and give the impression that the ailment is serious?” the judge asked.

He ruled that the letter having not been filed before the court through established procedure and without any indication on it linking it to the trial, the EFCC’s lawyer was right to describe it as “a trash meant for the dustbin”.

The judge noted that the letter failed to state the period that the defendant must be on bed restam He said it could be implied that the court had to adjourn the case indefinitely.

He said the application was like an application for stay of proceedings, which had been prohibited in criminal trials by the Supreme Court.

He said: “That means the court will be forced to adjourned sine die (indefinitely). It is my humble view that this sounds like an application for stay of proceedings. It is not just a medical report but an application for stay of proceedings.”

He recalled that the Supreme Court had in its judgment delivered on June 9, 2017, on an appeal by Metuh prohibited stay of proceedings in a criminal trial.

The judge also recalled that the Supreme Court, delivering judgment in an appeal by Metuh’s firm and co-defendant, Destra Investments Limited, on January 12, 2018, had ordered the Federal Court to give the case an accelerated hearing.

He said:  “Any purported medical report that will act as a stay of proceedings ought to be rejected by the court. The medical report was fraudulently smuggled into the court’s file.

“I agree with the learned counsel for the prosecution that it a trash meant for the dustbin. It is a useless paper only dumped on the court.”

He however said out of human sympathy he would consider the plea by defence lawyers  by adjourning the case till February 5.

The judge said, “‎In view of the passionate plea by the learned senior counsel for the first and second defendants, I hereby suspend my decision to revoke the bail granted to the first defendant. I hereby give him another chance to turn over a new leaf.

“Where the situation remains the same at the next adjourned date, this court shall exercise its power of revoking the bail. This matter is adjourned till February 5 and 6 for continuation of trial.”

The judge further said that Metuh’s application for adjournment as argued on Tuesday and Wednesday had been overtaken by events since by his (Metuh’s) conduct, the court had been unable to record progress in the case since Monday.

The judge granted the application by Metuh,  to call additional 10 witnesses.

He noted that Metuh had engaged in different ploys to frustrate the trial and attempts, “to hijack the proceedings.

“The first defendant has overstretched the patience of the court beyond limit in these proceedings,” Justice Abang said..

He said the court would no longer accept any medical report from Metuh.

The judge also ruled that the court would no longer entertain any application for adjournment to enable the defendant to call any witness.

He therefore directed that all the remaining witnesses Metuh had to call must always be in court for all proceedings.

Ikpeazu and lawyer to Destra, Tochukwu Onwugbufor (SAN), thanked the judge for showing sympathy to Metuh.

They promised not to stall the trial, and noted that the judge has always given the case accelerated hearing before the January 12, 2018 judgment of the Supreme Court, which directed that the case be promptly decided.

Metuh hospitalised in Nnewi, may be referred to UNTH Enugu – Lawyer

The trial of former spokesman of the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ), Olisa Metuh and his company, Destra Investment Limited on charges of money laundering was stalled yesterday owning to Metuh’s absence in court.

Metuh and Destra are being tried before the Federal High Court in Abuja for allegedly receiving N400m unlawfully from the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) in 2014. They are said to have also engaged in money laundering to the tune of $2m.

At the scheduled resumption of the trial yesterday, Metuh’s lawyer, Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN), told the court that his client was absent because he was on admission at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital in Nnewi, Anambra State.

Ikpeazu noted that the hospital has written a letter dated January 21, 2018 indicating that his client had been on admission since January 20, 2017.

He read some portions of the letter from the hospital, where it stated that “we are managing him” and that it “may refer him to the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital ( UNTH ), Enugu” for further treatment.

Ikpeazu said he knew that the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital in Nnewi hospital “is not as equipped as UNTH Enugu.”

In reaction to the reference to a recent Supreme Court judgment on the case by the prosecution lawyer, Sylvanus Tahir, Ikpeazu said the trial judge, Justice Okon Abang has always given the case prompt hearing.

He said the claim about Metuh’s ill health was not orchestrated by the defence to frustrate the trial.

Ikpeazu applied for an adjournment to a later date to enable the defence report to the court on his client’s health situation.

In further reaction to Tahir’ observation that the Supreme Court had, in its January 12, 2018 judgment in the appeal by Destra, order accelerated hearing, the company’s lawyer, Tochukwu Onwugbufor (SAN), said the Supreme Court’s directive for a speedy trial would not have a remarkable impact on the trial.

Onwugbufor said, “Everybody who has participated in this case knows that your lordship has never tolerated any delay.

“From my experience, the court has been very expeditious in the handling of this case and matters before it. Even the motion that went to the Supreme Court was determined by your lordship and it never constituted any delay to the hearing of this case.”

Responding, Tahir said Metuh’s absence would hamper further progress in the trial. He said he would not oppose the defence’s request for adjournment because it was based on health ground.

Tahir noted that the development would defeat the intention of the Supreme Court in its January 12 judgment. He said, “The apex court was clear and very emphatic on the need to bring the case to a conclusion.

“The Supreme Court made an order directing this court to treat this case with dispatch. And here we are confronted with the situation that will seemingly defeat the order made by the Supreme Court,” Tahir said.

In his ruling, Justice Abang observed that the trial was scheduled to resume yesterday for the prosecution to cross-examination Metuh’s 9th witness, Adebayo Bodurin.

The judge agreed to adjourn to the next day (today) since the prosecution did not oppose the defence’s request for adjournment to enable it brief the court on Metuh’s health status.

  • Behold the First Class women

    Behold the First Class women

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) in Enugu State and the Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) in Awka, Anambra State have inducted pharmacists. Two women – Mrs Janefrances Okafo-Ofomata and Miss Chinasa Ofondu – emerged the best graduating students, winning coveted academic prizes at the ceremonies. FRANKLIN ONWUBIKO (UNIZIK) and SAINT EKPALI (UNN) report.

They have never met,but they share some things in common. Apart from studying the same course in schools that are miles apart, Mrs Janefrances Okafo-Ofomata and Miss Chinasa Ofondu are women of excellence. They surmounted life challenges with sheer willpower to achieve distinction in pharmacy.

With a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.90, Chinasa became the Overall Best Graduating Student at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) – a feat, she said, was propelled by her father’s death. She was also the best in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

In a class of 76 students, Mrs Okafo-Ofomata, a young mother of one, was the Overall Best Graduating Student of the 2016/2017 graduating set of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) in Awka, Anambra State.

Chinasa, who hails from Ozubulu in Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State, said her father’s death almost terminated her academic career, but added that she never despaired despite the challenges she faced during the period.

Chinasa said the death of her father encouraged her to strive towards achieving life goals.

She said: “The death of my father came as a rude shock to us and I had thought that would be the end of my education. But, rather than being discouraged, it served as a source of motivation for me while I struggled to go to school.”

Chinasa’s strength of mind to get education earned her a scholarship from the late Bishop Eke Obiefule and Valerian Okeke, who were astonished by her brilliance and determination.

After graduating with a First Class in pharmacy, Chinasa said: “I was not the one who read the most in the class. A good number of colleagues read far more than I did, but I read smartly. I knew exactly what to read in all the courses.

“I aimed to be the best graduating student in my faculty, but being the best in the whole school was what kept me awake at night. Achieving this feat is like an icing on a cake. This is evidence that God never abandons his children.”

Chinasa said she did not expect to be the school’s valedictorian, having engaged in extracurricula activities. She was a strong member of the National Fellowship of Christian Pharmacy Students, in which she served as Vice President, Music Director and Academic Director at different times.

She said: “In the midst of my academic and extracurricular demands, I devised a formula which is rooted in hard work, smartness and fervent prayer.”

Chinasa expressed gratitude to the late Bishop Obiefule and Okeke, saying: “The scholarship they gave me laid the foundation for my academic excellence and future.”

Sharing her story with CAMPUSLIFE, Mrs Okafo-Ofomata, who graduated with a CGPA of 4.72, described her academic journey as one “riddled with sleepless nights, disappointments, struggles, failures and pains”.

She said: “I didn’t always keep to my study timetable, because we always had tight class activities. But, whenever I read, I assimilated faster. This worked well for me.”

Mrs Okafo-Ofomata explained that she had always wanted to study pharmacy, but she was disappointed when she was offered admission for Pure and Industrial Chemistry at the UNN. After graduating with a Second Class (Upper Division) in Pure and Industrial Chemistry, she sat for another Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and applied to study pharmacy at the UNIZIK. After two attempts, she was admitted for pharmacy in 2013 through Direct Entry.

Mrs Okafo-Ofomata got married to Mr Franklin Ofomata, as a student, and had her baby in 2016. She described this period of her life as “scary”, saying she juggled between taking care of her family and attending to demands of academics.

At UNIZIK, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences runs a strict system which requires a high level of concentration from students.

Despite all odds, Mrs Okafo-Ofomata studied hard to become the best in the faculty. At the induction held for graduating pharmacy students, Mrs Okafo-Ofomata went home with 10 awards and a cash prize of N500,000.

Appreciating her lecturers for the knowledge imparted on her, she said: “We take pride in knowing that we have a set of intelligent, dedicated, updated and hardworking lecturers who have given us the confidence to touch the lives of others. We have been taught to act true to our calling in saving lives and not take them. These values inculcated in us would open doors for greater achievements in the future.”

Congratulating the inductees earlier, the UNIZIK Vice-Chancellor (VC), Prof Joseph Ahaneku, represented by his deputy for Academics, Prof Charles Esimone, reminded the graduands of the need to guide their professional practice by the oath they took.

He urged them to always remember the school’s values of discipline, self-reliance and excellence. He said the university would continue to encourage staff and students of the faculty by providing the infrastructure needed to facilitate teaching and learning, including classrooms, laboratories and hostels, among others.

PDP convention: Group alleges fake delegates list for Anambra

A group of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stakeholders in Anambra State has raised the alarm alleging the submission of a fake delegates list for the state and meant to be used for Saturday’s convention.

The allegation was contained in a statement dated December 7, 2017 and signed by 12 members of the party from Anambra State.

The stakeholders, who stormed the national secretariat of the party in their numbers on Thursday, protested what they described as an attempt by a national official of the PDP to impose an illegal delegates list on the party leadership.

According to the statement released by the group, the contested delegates list was signed by members of the National Assembly and other stakeholders purported to have been elected at the state congress.

The statement, which was jointly signed by a former National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Chief Olisa Metuh; a party chieftain in Anambra, Chief Chris Uba and 10 others, insisted that no congress was held in the state on December 4, as claimed by the authors of the list.

They insisted that there was no list of delegates to the state congress as the state congress committee did not provide any and that there was no accreditation of delegates to the said congress.

“That since the state congress did not take place, it is the general view of the stakeholders that a repeat state congress be held after the national convention on the 09 December 2017”, the statement added.

In a related development, a law firm, Papal Juris Mondial Attorneys has petitioned the National Caretaker Committee of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) seeking the disqualification of a candidate for the National Organising Secretary, Col. Austin Akobundu for alleged misconduct.

In the petition dated December 5, 2017 and signed by Onyebuchi Nwosu Esq, the petitioners accused Akubodu of misconduct, misrepresentation and misappropriation of the party funds while he was National Vice Chairman, Southeast zone of the PDP from 2012 to 2014.

The petition added that Akobundu did not resign his position as vice chairman of the PDP in the zone when he was appointed as the Minister of State for Defence in 2014.

According to the petitioner, Akobundu action was a violation of the constitution of the PDP, which has rendered him unfit for contesting for the position of National Organising Secretary.

“There is first hand and highly classified information that the aforementioned candidate contesting for the position of the National Organizing Secretary of the party, had flouted the party’s constitution during his regime as the National Vice Chairman South East Zone”, the petition added.

Section 48 (1) of the PDP constitution (As Amended 2012) states that:

Subject to the provisions of this constitution, any member holding any office in the party at any level shall be deemed to have resigned that office, if he or she assumes any of the following offices:

c). Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1). Federal Minister

d). Any full time employment or appointment in the public service of the federation, state or local government.

“In outright dismay and disobedience to the above sections of the constitution, Col Austin Akobundu was the National Chairman South Eastern Zone of the party when he was appointed the Minister of State for Defence between the year 2014 and 2016.

“He never resigned from his position as the South Eastern National Vice Chairman before assuming the office of the Honourable Minister of State for Defence where he was authorizing cheques and withdrawing funds from the South East PDP Zonal Accounts.

“In order words, he operated the two offices at the same time. Thus, if the committee is in doubt of this allegation, the Treasurer or the Financial Secretary of the South Eastern Zone should be called upon to produce the Certified True Copies of the statement of accounts of the party from the bank of the South Eastern Zone as evidence.

“We submit that the conduct of Col Austin Akobundu is in total aberration to the party’s constitution. The party is on the verge of restructuring and reformation and cannot allow or tolerate such undescended charade of personality in its restructuring activities at this stage.

“We call on the Screening Committee and Convention to launch a wholesome investigation into this petition and take disciplinary measures against the candidate in question”.
