    • Residents of Anambra community celebrate ultra-modern hospital built on once dreaded slum

The ground where the General Hospital Okpoko in Ogbaru Local Government Area, Anambra State is built was a slum and hoodlums’ hideout that also harboured a burial ground before the Anambra State Governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo, turned the area into a new haven, Southeast Bureau Chief, NWANOSIKE ONU, reports.

Indigenes and non-indigenes resident in Okpoko, a community in Ogbaru Local Government Area, Anambra State are living in disbelief of the fact that a part of the settlement once used as a burial ground is now host to a medical facility that has turned it into a tourist centre.

Before now, it was only in respect of Enugu town that people in the Southeast spoke of new haven. But the slum in Anambra has joined the league, becoming one of the most cherished assets by both young and old.

It is one of the five general hospitals built by the Soludo administration in its two years of existence, the four others being the ones at Fegge, Oroma Etiti, Anaku, and Enugwu-Otu, in different local government areas in the state.

The government is not only building new hospitas, it is also upgrading existing ones. The move is alleviating pressure on primary healthcare centres and ensuring that referred cases are handled with precision and professionalism.

Okpoko, once the most dreaded zone in the state, is now widely called New Haven; a name that distinguishes it from its previous status as the equivalent of Ajegunle and Mushin communities in Lagos many years ago.

For most Okpoko residents, the general hospital is a big signature project for the Soludo administration.

Two residents, 32-year-old Ugochukwu and Nkem Akonam, are of the view that Soludo has surpassed every other governor in Anambra State in terms of land mark achievements since the state was created, given the fact that the once dreaded area has become the cynosure of all eyes.

Those who once knew the area or lived there but had not visited in the last two years may have difficulty recognising the former haven of Indian hemp smokers, pick pockets, touts and all manner of hoodlums around Onitsha area.

Then, the buildings the residents live in were shanties where toilet facilities were hard to come by. Hence, majority of the residents defecated on the roads as early as 4.30am, while some others use polythene bags to throw their faeces.

Ugochukwu said: “The place where the governor built this edifice used to be a burial ground where people threw the corpses of their dead children.

“When we heard that Soludo wanted to build a hospital there, everybody made a mockery of him, thinking it was another empty political promise politicians are known for.

“Nobody thought that one day, development would get to Okpoko, the dreadful refuse dump and home to criminal activities.

“Now the residents have started living normal life.

“When he came to campaign in this area, we saw it as another joke. But today, the hospital is here and the people of Okpoko will never forget him.”

Also speaking with ‘The Nation’, Akonam said Soludo has presented himself as the light that had eluded Anambra for so long.

He said: “The place we now have the hospital was a no-go area. People were afraid of going close to the place at night for fear of being attacked by unknown forces.

“It was a forest where dead bodies were dumped, including those of newly born babies who died after delivery.

“At a time, the people of Okpoko converted it to dustbin. But now, the burial ground has become a mighty hospital, all thanks to Soludo.

“All these roads you’re seeing today are newly constructed by the governor. There was nothing like roads in this area.

“In each shanty in Okpoko, you would see people numbering more than 50 in an environment that was not supposed to contain more than 10 persons.

“This area has the highest concentration of people in the entire Anambra State.

“We are no longer living in hell; we are now living in heaven. Because of what Soludo has done, some wealthy persons have started building in this area. The hospital alone is a master stroke.”

The new general hospital in Okpoko, which was commissioned in March, 2024, treats between 10 and 15 patients each day, according to the Medical Director, Kenechi Nnaji.

She told ‘The Nation’ that for now, everything at the hospital is free, including antenatal, mother and child care for women

“That is the instruction of the Governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo, and we have to adhere to it strictly because the people living in this area are all indigent,” Nnaji said.

One of the community leaders in the area, Udoka Ezenwa, said it would take ages for the residents to get another person like Soludo, describing him as the ‘Messiah’ of Okpoko community

But despite the relief given to the residents, some are still not happy with the situation as they demand for more like Oliver Twist.

Thirty-nine- year old Gladys Nwankwo, while speaking with ‘The Nation’, said: “Are we going to eat hospital or roads? The way the governor imposes tax on the poor should be condemned.

“We have seen the roads an hospital, but is it not somebody who is alive that would use those facilities?

“There’s no water here, yet someone whose income is through kiosk selling pays huge amounts as tax. Does it make sense?” she queried.

The state’s Commissioner for Information, Dr Law Mefor, told ‘The Nation’ that Soludo has already exempted such categories of people, including wheel barrow pushers, from taxes.

He said the Soludo administration is one with a human face, which has compassion for the downtrodden and not the picture the lady painted.

The Coordinator, Reform Nigeria Movement, a rights group, Comrade Osita Obi, opined that only a member of the opposition political parties would not see something good in the reforms that are going on in Anambra State.

Obi said: “You know I am not a politician and don’t belong to any party. My position is to always criticise things that are not right in the society. But any time I see any good thing, I must say it.

“One of such good things from Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration is giving the rural populace life, and that is what democracy entails.

“Another good thing I’ve seen in the state is the construction of the road from Amansea- Awa- Ufuma and the Amansea-Ebenebe–Ugbene-Uene-obaofemili.

“These roads were abandoned by successive governments for ages because of the length and funds involved, cutting off communities from their neighbours. It was bad.

“But today, those communities numbering more than 10, are singing the praises of Soludo. And what makes you feel they will not vote for him when he starts his second term campaigns?

“He is also building a massive flyover at Ekwulobia that links many communities; another blockbuster project.

“Soludo has really endeared himself to the people and I believe that very soon, he is going to tackle the issue of insecurity in the state.”

The Anambra State Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and one time state Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Ifeatu Obi-Okoye, says what Soludo is doing is building a future for Anambra people.

“Governor Soludo’s achievements are not just milestones; they are stepping stones to a brighter future.

“Imagine an Anambra where every child is vaccinated, every mother feels safe during childbirth and no family fears the financial burden of illness.

“This is the Anambra we are building—an Anambra where progress is felt in every home and every heart.

“Let this reflection inspire you to stay hopeful and engaged. Together, under Governor Soludo’s leadership, we are transforming challenges into reality,” Obi-Okoli said.

From all indications, Soludo is gradually ending the agony, pains, sufferings and gnashing of teeth by residents in many communities in Anambra State.

He continues to link communities with roads in the state the way former Governor and former Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige did, including construction of virgin ones.

The residents are singing the praise of the former Central Bank of Nigeria CBN Governor, saying he has ended their pains, sorrows and constant lamentations for many years.

For 36-year-old Chidiebere Chidebe, “the suffering in our area was unbearable because the Ebenebe-Obaofemili Road was abandoned even before we were born.

“We could not take our farm produce to town because the road was not motorable and you can’t use bicycle to transport them. Life was so difficult for the people of Awba-Ofemmili and others,” Chidebe said.

Also, Sunday Nnamah, 41, told ‘The Nation’ that they had not seen any politician like Soludo, describing him as “talk na do”

He recalled that when Soludo visited the communities during the campaign period, he assured them that if elected, he would tar the road for the communities, having suffered to come to the area and seeing how terrible the road was.

He vowed that in the 2025 governorship election, the people would not have any option but to return him, having remembered the area.

Chinedu Oraekie, a 47-year-old native of the area, expressed his deepest appreciation to Soludo, adding that he had given them a sense of belonging.

Oraekie, a former Secretary General of Awba-Ofemili Community, praised the governor’s benevolence, saying: “I was born here, and the road conditions were terrible. I thank God today for the governor we have.”

Comrade Osita Obi, a human rights activist and Convener of the Recover Nigeria Project, lauded Soludo’s developmental strides.

According to him, “the governor is doing wonderfully well in the state, but the public has not been given the opportunity to learn about these developments.”

Another long road done by Soludo that was abandoned for about 40 years was Amansea-Awa-Ndukwuenu-Ufuma Road, among many others scattered all over Anambra State.

  • A hive of insecurity in Anambra State

A hive of insecurity in Anambra State

    • By Kene Obiezu

Sir: The light is dimming and dimming fast in Nigeria’s ‘Light of the Nation’ state as one security breach after the other has left residents fearing for their lives, and visitors keeping off the state as much as they can.

A couple of days ago, Tobias Okonkwo, a Catholic Priest of the Catholic Diocese of Nnewi and manager of the respective Schools of Nursing, Midwifery, and Medical Laboratory at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Ihiala, was shot dead at the Onitsha-Owerri Expressway in the state.

A few days before, a legislator in the state, Justice Azuka who represents Onitsha North Constituency in the State House of Assembly was abducted while visiting Onitsha.

Some weeks ago, Osita Chinedu, a lecturer with the Nnamdi Azikiwe University was shot dead right in the heart of Awka, the state capital, in an apparent car-snatching operation.

This year alone, lawyers, businessmen, medical doctors and others have been abducted in the state. The killings did not start today, far from it. But in recent times, and especially as the 2025 governorship election in the state ticks fatefully close, insecurity appears to have acquired a new, devastating edge in a state whose people have fought heroically to acquire a measure of stability over the years.

The question that must be asked at this point is:

What is the government doing as people it is sworn to protect have been turned into prey for vicious criminals? Sadly, the answer appears to be nothing, and it is immeasurably disappointing that things have turned out this way.

Insecurity is the clearest indicator that a government has failed. It is what is finally exposing the bare behind of the current Anambra State government.

When people can no longer sleep with their two eyes closed because criminals are breathing down their neck despite the conspicuous presence of constituted authorities, then something is clearly wrong.  It is for the state government to design ways to keep its territory safe while putting to flight all agents of destabilization and destruction.

The clock is furiously ticking until the light finally dies off in Nigeria’s ‘Light of the nation’ state.

Tension in Anambra over disappearance of Anglican Archbishop

    • Residents fear cleric may have been kidnapped

There’s tension in Anambra State following the disappearance of the Retired Anglican Archbishop on the Niger and Bishop of Nnewi Prince of Nnewi, Most Rev. Prof. Godwin Okpala

Sources said yesterday that the cleric was last seen on Friday when he embarked on a journey to Umuchu Community in Aguata Local Government Area of the state.

It was gathered that the revered clergyman didn’t arrive at his destination, and every attempt to get in touch with him proved abortive.

The archbishop was in the company of his driver, who is also missing.

The Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwukwu Ikenga, said the command was not aware of the situation.

He, however, assured that he would make further contacts to know what was wrong.

Meanwhile, The Nation gathered that a prayer session was organised by the Bishop of Nnewi Diocese, Rt. Rev. Ndubuisi Obi, yesterday.

He urged intercessory prayers for the archbishop’s safe return.

The prayer alert said:  “We earnestly plead for your fervent prayers for their safety and swift return.

“The relevant authorities have been contacted, and we are hopeful and trusting in God’s divine intervention for a positive resolution” the Bishop pleaded

The disappearance of Archbishop Okpala has heightened tension in the entire Anambra State as residents are no longer comfortable with the spate of killings and kidnappings.

One of the residents who pleaded not to be mentioned told The Nation that people are no longer safe in the state.

“What kind of government do we have here where people are not free to move about in the afternoon and night? If someone like Archbishop could be missing, what happens to ordinary people?

“The current administration in Anambra does not care about the safety of its citizens and I’m not mincing words in saying it” the aggrieved resident said.

  • Anambra’s revenue collectors

    Anambra’s revenue collectors

Importantly, the Anambra State government must investigate the incident in which two alleged Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) collection agents of the Governor Chukwuma Soludo administration were burned alive by a mob in Onitsha. A viral video showed the mob hitting the alleged revenue collectors with different objects before setting them ablaze. The shocking incident happened at Old Market Road in the commercial city.

According to an eye-witness account, six “revenue collectors” were chasing a tipper driver “over a certain amount they asked him to pay.” Some of them tried to take control of the vehicle, which led to a struggle.  “In the process, the tipper driver lost control and rammed into a bystander, killing him instantly. Immediately the revenue collectors saw the damage they had caused, they tried to flee the scene.”

The witness said an angry mob “set two of the revenue officials ablaze while four others managed to escape.” He added: “It was one death too many as this had been going on in Anambra in the last two years. The person the tipper driver rammed into is a known person. We cannot continue like this anymore. These revenue touts of the state government have killed more Ndi Anambra than non-state actors who are disturbing the peace.” The mob went too far.

However, a government official was reported saying the alleged revenue collectors were not government agents. Spokesman for the state police command Tochukwu Ikenga said they “responded swiftly” on receiving the news of the incident, adding, “We are already working with the relevant authorities to ascertain what happened.”

It is disturbing that residents of the state were reported to have complained about the activities of revenue collection agents working for the state government, particularly their aggressive methods. The Soludo administration should look into this accusation and take action to ensure that its revenue collectors do their work without aggression.

In March, Soludo, while speaking about his achievements two years after he became governor, said the state’s IGR was “N1.4bn to N1.5bn a month” at the beginning of his governorship but “now, we are getting to a little under N3bn.”  “That’s not where we want to be,” he added. “Our target this year is to be able to exceed N4bn, and Anambra has the potential to get up to N10bn on a monthly basis.”

Improving the state’s IGR should not involve acts of aggression. It is condemnable that three lives were lost in this incident.

  • The seismic insecurity in Anambra State

The seismic insecurity in Anambra State

    By Chekwube Nzomiwu

Yet again, the insecurity in Anambra State claimed three precious lives penultimate week. The deceased who are members of the crew of Supersport were killed when their vehicle ran into an ambush by gunmen at Iseke, a border town of Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State to Orlu, Imo state. Luckily, security operatives rescued six members of the crew, while one is yet to be accounted for, according to reports in the media. The dead were identified as a cameraman, police officer and driver.

They were on their way to Uyo, Akwa Ibom State to cover the AFCON qualifying match between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and their Libyan counterpart, when the gunmen struck. This incident occurred on October 8, about three days before the October 11 AFCON qualifier, which the Nigerian side won by a lone goal.

This latest attack once more brought to the front burner, the terrifying level of insecurity in Anambra State under the administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo. Four days before the Iseke incident involving the Supersport crew, the police foiled an attempt to kidnap a foreign expatriate working for a construction company at Ogbunka, Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State. The expatriate, a Syrian national, narrowly escaped abduction, but two of his police guards were shot by the gunmen. The police spokesman in Anambra State, Tochukwu Ikenga who confirmed this report in a statement, said the injured policemen were in stable condition.

Two days prior to the Ogbunka incident, unidentified gunmen killed two policemen at Uruagu Nnewi community in Nnewi North Local Government Area of the State. According to media reports, the attackers hurled an impoverished explosive device at the police team and it exploded immediately, killing the two policemen instantly at the spot.

Between August and September, gunmen attacked three police stations in Anambra State, namely the Divisional Police Station Oba and Nnobi Police Station, both in Idemili South Local Government Area and Nnewi Police Station. The attacks claimed the lives of policemen. Last year, nine members of a United Nations entourage, including policemen, were brutally murdered by gunmen at Ogbaru Local Government while on a visit to an erosion site in the area.

Besides the remote areas, the insecurity in Anambra State extended to Awka, the capital city and its adjoining communities, which have all become hotbeds for bloody clashes between rival cult groups. In Awka in particular, people are lynched, maimed, butchered and killed in broad daylight. While the media reports some of these gory incidents, many go unreported.

Some people would argue though that insecurity is a national malady. However, the situation in Anambra State has assumed a very dangerous dimension that some parts of the state are now being called Sambisa, after Sambisa Forest, the main base of the Boko Haram insurgents in the Northeast.

More worrisome is that the Soludo administration appears to have been overwhelmed by the insecurity, which is currently rocking the state like a volcanic eruption. Rather than confront the seismic security situation bedevilling his domain, Soludo, the Chief Security Officer of Anambra State who receives almost N1 billion monthly as security vote, keeps looking for a scapegoat to blame for the insecurity.

In February this year, he said that the fight against insecurity in Anambra State has been hindered by the infiltration of vigilante operatives by criminals. To me, such an excuse, coming from a governor who took an oath to strive to preserve the Fundamental Objectives and Directive Principles of State Policy, contained in Chapter II of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), sounds ridiculous. Under the aforementioned chapter, Section 14 (2) (b) clearly states that “the security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of government;”

Therefore, it is the duty of the government to safeguard lives and property in Anambra State and not the vigilante operatives who are not recognized by the Nigerian law. If Soludo has lost confidence in the vigilante operatives, the constitutionally recognised security apparatuses of the Nigerian state, such as the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps and even the military, are at his disposal.

The excuse that criminals infiltrated the vigilante operatives cannot be an alibi for the governor’s inability to secure the state. The vigilante operatives are meant to complement the efforts of the security agencies of the Nigerian State who are better trained and equipped in handling security matters. So, what’s the fuss about the infiltration of the vigilante groups?

Soludo should please swallow his pride and learn from his nearby counterparts, Peter Mba of Enugu State and Alex Otti of Abia State who have both exhibited the political will and capacity to confront the security challenges on ground when they assumed office. In Enugu for instance, Mba has empowered the police and the military with the necessary equipment, including vehicles, operational and communication gadgets, drones and other advanced technology, needed to confront the insecurity in Enugu State. Surveillance cameras have been mounted all over the Enugu capital city, to monitor the movement of people and vehicles in the city.

To attract both indigenous and foreign investors, security is very paramount. The efforts of Governor Mba in the area of security have started yielding results with the influx of investors into Enugu State, to revamp moribund industries, such as the Sunrise Flour Mills Enugu and Enugu United Palm Products Limited, Ibite Olo, Ezeagu Local Government Area of the State.

Unfortunately, rather than pay attention to the insecurity plaguing Anambra State, which his government used as an excuse for delaying local government election, Soludo appears to be obsessed with how to control the allocation coming to the 21 local government areas of the State from the Federal Accounts Allocation Committee (FAAC). Having been obligated by the landmark judgment of the Supreme Court to conduct local government election, which he failed to do for over two and half years, he introduced a bill in the Anambra State House of Assembly, to compel the 21 councils to remit a portion of their allocation to a consolidated account controlled by the state government. In spite of public outcry, the House of Assembly passed the bill, which has now been signed into law. This is ludicrous, considering the fact that the Supreme Court granted the councils financial autonomy.

Quoting former Senate President, Ahmed Lawan, “the lack of local government autonomy potentially inhibits solutions as well as efforts by the federal and state governments towards addressing the nation’s security challenges.” This statement made by Lawan in an interview with State House Correspondents in Abuja in May last year, aptly corroborates scientific evidence from a research paper published in the International Journal of Public Administration and Management (IJPAMR) Volume 6. No. 4, 2021. Ubi and Akie in the paper titled, “Local Government System and Escalation of Insecurity in Nigeria, concluded that if the local government system functions at full capacity, rural people will be empowered, rural urban migration curbed, local economy enhanced, youths provided with direct and indirect jobs, and thus, they will not be given to crime, which triggers insecurity..”

I therefore expect Professor Soludo to live up to his billing as a distinguished Professor of Economics and a consummate public servant, having served at different times as the Chief Economic Adviser to the President, Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria and the de facto Minister of National Planning. He should quickly re-order his priorities by making the insecurity one of the focal points of his administration.

Soludo should allow the councils to enjoy the autonomy that they were granted by the Supreme Court, to enable them perform optimally. A functional local government will help to end the alarming insecurity in Anambra State.

  • Anambra desilts drainages as flood displaces 100

THE Anambra Government has started desilting drainages in parts of Ogbaru Local Government area of the state in a bid tackle flooding in the area.

Mr Arinze Awogu, Transition Chairman of Ogbaru said this in Atani, the local government headquarters.

The transition chairman said that no fewer than 100 displaced persons were taking refuge at the secretariat.

Awogu said blocked drainages were partly to blame for the floods in Ogbaru, a flood-prone area.

He said the cleanup being spearheaded by the newly created Anambra State Drainage and Forest Preservation Agency, would go a long way in freeing the drains and lead storm water to natural waterways.

According to him, the Obodoukwu Road drainage channel that connects from Onitsha-Owerri Road to Elevant-House, Ojoto Street and Atani were the areas that witnessed the state government-led massive cleanup.

“The massive clean-up is coming at a time when the council needed to open up blocked water channels so as to reduce the effect of the flood ravaging the council at the moment.

“We want to thank Governor Willie Obiano for tackling issues of blocked drainages as most failed roads were as a result of water finding its way into the road because its channel had been blocked,” he said.

Awogu said, “I call on the people to adopt acceptable ways of disposing waste because the era of dumping waste into water channels was over,” he said.

Chief Augustine Uyanne, a resident of the area said some of the drainages have been blocked with silt for a long time, adding that whenever it rained, water found its way to their houses.
