Police ‘destroy’ MASSOB’s office in Anambra

There was confusion in Omor, Anyamelu Local Government Area of Anambra State, yesterday. The police in Anaku, the council headquarters, allegedly stormed the office of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) and destroyed it.

This occurred two days after the inauguration of the office.

Briefing reporters, the MASSOB Director of Information in the area, Joseph Tagbo, alleged that the police invaded their office and destroyed it two days after its inauguration.

“They vandalised and carted away equipment and cash.”

He said he wondered what their offence was, which warranted the destruction, adding that MASSOB was a defenceless body fighting for a sovereign state of Biafra.

Tagbo decried the police for provoking a non-violent group.

MASSOB’s Onitsha Region Four Administrator Arinze Igbani and the Director of Transport, Chief Charles Oputa, described the police action as barbaric. They said it would not deter MASSOB from its struggle to actualise a Biafran nation.

According to Chief Oputa, now that MASSOB was working to ensure a hitch- free Christmas season, “the police have destroyed our office. It is unfortunate because we did not commit any offence.”

Efforts to speak to the police spokesman Emeka Chukwuemeka were not successful, but a source in the police confirmed the incident, saying MASSOB was not recognised by the government and should not have offices.

  • Anambra East, West, battle for Ngige’s deputy

Anambra East, West, battle for Ngige’s deputy

    •Okonkwo risks expulsion from APC

    •Omabala people reject Obi’s choice

THE battle for who becomes the deputy to Senator Chris Ngige, the All Progressive Congress (APC) governorship candidate for the November 16, 2013 election has intensified between Anambra East and Anambra West Local government Areas.

When the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) released the names of parties’ candidates and their deputies for the election, Ngige’s name appeared with that of Dr. Mike Aghadinuno as his deputy.

Aghadinuno, who was a onetime deputy to Hon. Uche Ekwunife in the 2010 governorship election under the belt of Progressive People’s Alliance (PPA), is a medical doctor and hails from Nando in Anambra East Council Area.

But the pressure from the party is so much on Ngige to pick Hon. Raph Okeke from Anambra West, who incidentally, was once chairman of the council area from 1999 to 2002 and also a two-time House of Representatives member.

The argument of the political egg heads from the area not only in APC but from other political parties in the state is that Anambra East already has two governorship candidates in two different parties and will not be wise for APC to choose a deputy from there.

Embattled Comrade Tony Nwoye of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Chief Willie Obiano who was picked by Governor Peter Obi as the candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) against the wishes of the people, is from Anambra East also.

In a related development, APC has warned Sen. Annie Okonkwo to either join the fray or risk the wrath of the party, adding that the mega party would not tolerate any form of indiscipline from anybody.

Speaking with The Nation yesterday in Awka, Okonkwo’s political mentor and APC strongman in the state, Chief Dennis Ngene, said that Okonkwo cannot be bigger than APC adding that his problem is that of naivety.

Also, former chairman of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in the state, Chief Amechi Obidike told The Nation yesterday that APC had no room for anybody who wants to bring the party down.

Amechi who described APC as a moving train that does not know anybody who is “stupid” on its way, said that Ngige’s campaign group is prepared to make any sacrifice in making sure that APC candidate is delivered to the people of Anambra State.

  • Anambra polls: deaf and dumb campaigns for Ubah

DEAF and dumb people yesterday stormed Onitsha in solidarity match for the governorship candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Dr. Ifeanyi Ubah.

Addressing newsmen at the Post Office complex, Onitsha, the Chairman, Anambra State Deaf and dumb Movement for Ifeanyi Uba, Prince Ikechukwu Ogugua said they are throwing their weight behind Ubah as his policies were favourable to them.

Prince Oguguo said the Deaf Movement decided to adopt him as their candidate ahead of the November 16 governorship election.

His words, “This is a purely peaceful match, it is not a protest, why we carried placards was to tell the people what we meant since we are deaf and dumb and can’t speak, so what we would have said if we were not deaf is what we put down in these placards, so anybody that sees these will think it is a protest, we are on a solidarity match for Ifeanyi Uba, our choice and a man who has touched the lives of the downtrodden in the society”

He said solidarity match will continue in other major cities of Awka, Nnewi, Ekwulobia and other major industrial and commercial cities in the state to enlighten the electorate especially the physically challenged, deaf and dumb members to vote en mass for Ifeanyi Uba and the Labour Party.

Contributing, the Public Relations Officer of Anambra State Movement for Ifeanyi Uba, Mr. Ebuka Uche said the choice of Onitsha as the first place for Ifeanyi Uba solidarity match was because of the population and its commercial activities.

Uche described Ifeanyi Uba as a humane man whose love for the less privileged persons in the society is total evident in his support towards their members and expressed optimism that if he becomes the governor of the state, he will not abandon them.

  • Anambra: What a peculiar mess

Anambra State is a study in paradox. It is a state where there is a concentration of elites-business, political, social. Thus, the polity is expected to have benefited immensely from this. It is not out of place to expect that only the highly educated and polished would ever venture into the political arena in such a state.

But, it is an understatement to say this is not so. Anambra is probably the most backward of the five South East states in terms of public affairs. Everyone who owns a container at the Tin Can Ports believes that qualifies him to purchase the governorship ticket of a political party and move on to bulldoze his way into the Awka Government House. Unfortunately, this is not a new development. It has become the political culture.

At a point, under the crude politicking encouraged by the military, the Lord of the Manor was (Dr.) Arthur Eze. He dictated who got what, when and how. Later, at the inception of the Fourth Republic, (Chief Dr.) Emeka Offor took over from Eze. He dictated the pace; his connection at the presidency was enough to win him sufficient influence to peddle.

By the time Chris Uba and his brothers arrived the scene, they had learnt enough to create their own brand of politics. Chris was the man who could do anything to pave the way for others. His brawn showed him as a man who would not tolerate any obstacle on his way. He was bold enough to attempt to pick whoever he wished to take the governorship seat. He went further than others by getting his choice (or victim) to sign a contract that he would hand over the key to the state treasury and turn the Government House to a mere extension of the Uba compound. His two elder brothers were strategically positioned. One was sent to the Senate and the other was planted in Aso Rock. He, too, was a member of the Board of Trustees of the ruling party, even when he was yet under 40 years of age. Chris Uba lived large. He sought total domination.

Like Basorun Gaa in the old Oyo empire who, blinded by his power and influence, decreed that the Alaafin should daily come to pay him obeisance, the emperor sought to decide how Governor Chris Ngige, ruled. A resistance by Ngige who refused to serve as a mere puppet led to a conflagration and the most audacious invasion of the seat of power. Aided by a Police AIG, a sitting governor was abducted and his resignation announced. It was not only an exhibition of absurdity, but an indication that morality had taken full flight from the state.

What a pity? From the years under Clement Mbadinuju, the soul of the state has been troubled. Crisis has been the name of the game. Consider the situation in 2011. No one, not even the electoral commission, knew who the senatorial candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) were. The commission simply made the electorate vote for the parties. Yet, in the worst form of political abracadabra that I have witnessed, the party’s candidates emerged from the courts winners in all the senatorial districts.

The setting for the November governorship election is as ludicrous as ever. Who are the flag bearers? Somehow, even if inexplicably, Nicholas Ukachukwu has emerged the PDP candidate. In 2010, Ukachukwu had made a bold attempt to capture the party’s ticket. When he failed, he moved to Hope Democratic Party and ran the race as if he stood any chance. When, as expected he was unsuccessful, he launched a bid to “recover his stolen mandate”. Andy Uba, too, who was edged out in the power game, simply hijacked the Labour Party platform. He ran, but failed. He is in the race this time, too. He organised his own congress and got himself declared the candidate. Need I point out that, barely a year after his governorship bid failed in 2010, he managed to be declared the victorious PDP senatorial candidate? He is the chairman of the Senate Committee on Electoral Commission His predecessor was Senator Adeleke, the serubawon of Osun. What an insult. What a desecration of values and institutions.

In APGA, it is the turn of a neophyte to fly the flag. Willie Obiano is not known to have played any part in the public arena. He simply got Governor Peter Obi’s nod and that was enough to crowd out others, including a former CBN governor, Professor Charles Soludo, who had crossed over from the PDP assured that the ticket was his to pick. He is a Professor of Economics, not Nigerian Politics. Ngige of the Action Congress of Nigeria appears the only major contender without a serious baggage. He emerged from the 2003 episode a hero of sort. However, some moralists still query this verdict. How could he have chosen to dine with the devil and then complain when the fiend made an attempt to devour him?

It really does not matter who wins the November 16 poll. The losers are already known- they are the people. Who are the men on parade? What are their antecedents? What do they stand for? Men who hop from one platform to another could not be described as committed and honourable. Men who are known to have been part of a conspiracy to drown the state ought not to be allowed a dance in the public square.

When a man wakes up in the money, dresses his bed, decorates the mattress with thorns, he would be foolish to complain about the consequences in the night. He who has ears, let him hear.

  • Anambra North monarchs battle Obi over candidate

The monarchs in Anambra North are battling Governor Peter Obi, following his choice of a candidate for the November 16 governorship election.

Obi is supporting Chief Willie Obiano against the choice of the traditional rulers from the zone.

This, The Nation learnt yesterday, could be why the Chairman of the Anambra Traditional Rulers Council and Obi of Onitsha, Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe, resigned his position penultimate week.

The Obi of Onitsha, however, cited numerous engagements at the federal level as reason for his resignation.

It was learnt that the governor asked the people of Anambra North, including traditional rulers, to decide who they would want to succeed him and they picked Dr. Chike Obidigbo.

But Obi ignored their choice and pushed for Obiano, who was the second-in-command in Fidelity Bank.

Since then, things have not been well between Governor Obi and the traditional rulers.

A monarch, who spoke with The Nation on condition of anonymity, said: “We are not fools. The governor told us to make our choice and we did by picking Obidigbo. We did not know he had made up his mind on Obiano.

“He shot us in the foot and wants us to keep quiet; we cannot. This is not proper. May be he sees us as people who are not serious.

“We did not go for any party. All we wanted is a credible person from Anambra North, who will continue from where he is going to stop. We are considering taking a decision and very soon, the people will know our stand.

“Obi has done well for this state and for him to have told us to pick somebody we like and after doing that he did otherwise, means he does not take us serious.”

However, the clamour for a North candidate is going down as the people seem not to be happy with Obiano’s choice by APGA.

An APGA chieftain, who spoke with The Nation yesterday in confidence, said: “My brother, we do not know what to do now. Everybody is confused in APGA because of our governor’s choice.

“As we are talking now, only the governor knows what he wants with such choice. We are keeping our fingers crossed.”

  • Robbers kill vigilante in Anambra

A member of Okpoko Vigilance Group, simply identified as “Stubborn”, was killed yesterday by a gang of robbers operating on motorcycles at Mugambo Market, Okpoko, in Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State.

It was learnt that the robbers trailed the man from Elephant Building to his security post.

When he sighted the motorcyclists, the vigilante reportedly ran away.

But the assailants were said to have brought out their AK-47 rifles and started shooting at the vigilante as he ran for safety.

The burglary proof on the window of the house reportedly prevented “Stubborn” from passing through.

The robbers entered the compound and shot at the door. The force from the heavy guns detached the door from the wall.

They shot “Stubborn” several times in the head and chest and emptied a magazine of bullets on him before leaving the scene, it was learnt.

An eyewitness said the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) in Okpoko, led by Anthony Ogah, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), “Stubborn’s” colleagues in the vigilance group and members of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), were still battling to unravel the motive behind the killing.

The eyewitness said a suspect was arrested and handed over to the SARS at the police headquarters in Awkuzu.

He said the suspect has been helping the police with useful information.

A lawyer and resident, Chief S. O. Abuchi, hailed the police, the vigilantes and MASSOB for tightening security in the area.

  • ‘APC will transform Anambra’

    ‘APC will transform Anambra’

Anambra State All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate Senator Chris Ngige has promised to transform the state, if elected into office.

“My antecedents speak for me. I have done it before and I have a good legacy”, he said at a party meeting in Akwa, the state capital.

In Ngige’s view, the November 16 poll is crucial to the future of the state. He said that he wanted to return to the State House to continue the good works he started in 2003.

The APC candidate spoke ahead of the inauguration of his campaign committte today by the party leaders. Expected at the ceremony are Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola, his Imo and Nasarawa counterparts-Owelle Rochas Okorocha and Alhaji Al-Makura, the National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Layiwola Mohammed, and other chieftains.

Ngige has been to many local governments for consultations and meetings. His campaign director, Chief George Moghalu, has also been mobilising support for his ambition among the stakeholders.

November 16 is a litmus test for the APC. The party will test its strength, popularity and acceptance in the 37 year-old state for the first time.

Eyes are on Ngige, who won the senatorial election against the APGA candidate, Prof. Dora Akuyili, in 2011. The question on the lip of many people is whether he can also win the governorship against all odds.

Ngige’s APC is the only party that is not factionalised in Anambra State. The ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) is in disarray. The party is in and out of court resolving the dispute generated by its rancorous primaries. Although the court has now pronounced Chief Willy Obiano as its candidate, his rivals at the shadow poll are still up in arms.

Also, despite the court’s ruling, the gladiators locking horns over the party leadership have not sheathe their swords. Observers contend that the party may go for the poll without putting its house in order.

Peace has also eluded the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). For weeks, Comrade Tony Nwoye and Senator Andy Uba have been struggling for the ticket. Parallel primaries produced the two aspirants as the flagbearers. Although the court has now ordered that the electoral commission should recognise Nwoye as the flag bearer, the move has not ended the crisis.

PDP sources said that party chieftains opposed to Nwoye are planning to challenge the recent ruling of the High Court on the primaries at the Appeal Court. Also, tension has not ceased in the APGA because the national chairman, Chief Victor Umeh, and Maxi Okwu, who is challenging his leadership, has not surrendered.

Ngige said the crises rocking the party is a pointer to the fact that they are not ready for repositioning the state. He said the APC is the only party that has the progressive blueprint to transform the state through responsible, accountable and transparent governance.

Ngige, who represents Anambra Central Zone, in the Senate, promised to fight the infrastructure battle.

Since his emergence as the APC flagbearer, his name has send jitters down the spines of other parties.

Unlike the APGA and PDP candidates, he has political experience. Although he could not weather the storm as the governor in the past, he had bounced back on the scene by winning the senatorial election. Analysts believe that the APC flagbearer has a thick skin. In the Senate, he has also not been a bench warmer.

APC is the only party that does not have any distracting suit in the court. This has assisted Ngige to project the image of a conseunsus builder and symbol of unity.

Moghalu, who also spoke in Awka, said that power must shift to the APC on November 16.

He said the APC governors have served the people creditably in the 11 states. Besides, the campaign manager said that the party has people-oriented manifestos, which were crafted after an indepth need analysis.

He predicted that the so-called power of incumbency will collapse on pull day, adding that there will be no room for over-confidence on the part of Governor Peter Obi.

Moghalu said the APC administration will insist on prudent management of scare resources and mobilise the talents of the indigenes to fuel development.

However, many challenges will confront Ngige. One of them is the selection of his running mate.

  • Anambra poll: Four governors, 23 others to lead Ngige’s campaign

•National campaign committee for inauguration today

Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha will lead the governorship campaign team of Senator Chris Ngige for Anambra State.

Ngige is the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate.

The co-leaders for the campaign team are: Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole; his Osun and Nasarawa states’ counterparts, Rauf Aregbesola and Umaru Al-Makura.

Chief George Muoghalu is the chairman of the campaign committee and Sen. Osita Izunaso is its secretary. APC’s National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed; Senate Minority Leader George Akume, Chief Tom Ikimi, Gen Ahmed Aboki Abdullahi, former Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, are members of the committee.

The APC national leaders are expected in Anambra State today to inaugurate the party’s National Campaign Committee (NCC) for the governorship poll.

Other members of the team are: Dr. Anyim Nyerere, Madam Sharon Ikeazor, Abubakar Lado Suleja, Olisaemeka Akamukali, Mr. James Ocholi SAN, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, Abubakar Kari, Charles Odedo, Chief Uzoma-Igbonwa, Donatus Onyemena.

Also in the team are members of the Interim National Executive Committee from the Southeast Gozie Agbakoba, C. J. Chinwuba, Chibuzor Obiakor, Mrs Constance Iloh and Dame Dozie Ikedife.

The state leadership of the party and members of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) yesterday held a marathon meeting in Awka, the state capital, with Ngige to finalise the campaign arrangements.

APC has code-named Ngige’s campaign as “unstoppable march to Anambra Government House”.

A former Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Chief Charles Amilo, said an arrangement had been made to ensure that Ngige’s campaign takes off smoothly.

He said: “Let me tell you that the APC is not leaving any stone unturned in making sure that it gets to the Government House on March 17, 2014.

“If anybody thinks that the Government House is his personal property, that person is a joker. The APC is not in a crisis, as other parties. Therefore, we have put in everything for that purpose.

“The national leadership of our party is here to inaugurate the National Campaign Committee. After that, we will kick-start Sen. Ngige’s campaigns immediately. It will be Operation Earthquake.”

  • Anambra commissioner to resign today

Anambra State Commissioner for Special Duties Vincent Ejikeme Ezenwajiaku has said he will resign his appointment today, following his alleged involvement in a N10.6 million fraud.

He sued the Commissioner of Police in charge of the Special Fraud Unit (SFU), the Tunde Ogunsakin, Chuks Mgbemena, Okposiakpo Elolor for N250 million for an attempt to damage his reputation.

He urged the Awka High Court to restrain Ogunsakin, Mgbemena and Elohor from arresting him pending the determination of the suit.

The police declared him wanted on Wednesday over “his refusal to honour their invitation”.

Briefing reporters yesterday in Awka, Ezenwajiaku said: “I’m going to step further on the court cases against these people. I have never been involved in any form of fraud.

“I am going to resign; I am going to give the letter to Governor Peter Obi today.

“I do not intend to embarrass this government, this is to prove my innocence until I clear my name. Whatever it will take to do it, I will do it.

“This matter is a commercial transaction between two brothers from the same town. In 1992, I established a company, Bio Plastics Limited, which I solely funded and promoted.

“The industry produced containers for packaging of cosmetics and we went into production in 1995. Mgbemena sponsored my wedding, I told him about what I was doing and he showed interest in it.

“He stopped me from bringing in another brother of ours, Jude Ezechukwu, the owner of the defunct Josper Football Club.

“The issue of owing this man came up in 2004. After the meeting of the board, it was agreed that I should pay him N7.5million which I agreed.

“We never quarrelled; things went bad because I was bed-ridden and that delayed the payment.

“All I know is that I owe Mgbemena N7.5millon of which I have paid N1.5million.

“I do not know why my brother has taken this small thing too far.”

  • Anambra PDP: Court voids Nwoye’s candidacy

The crisis over who represents the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the November 16 governorship election in Anambra State has taken a new twist.

A Federal High Court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has voided the candidacy of Tony Nwoye, who emerged winner of the August 14 primary election conducted by the Ken Emeakayi-led faction.

The suit was filed by one of the PDP aspirants, Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, on August 28.

Ukachukwu, through his lead counsel, Rickey Tarfa (SAN), had sought the court’s leave to void Nwoye’s candidature as declared by the PDP and accepted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

In a certified true copy of the judgment delivered by Justice S.A Aliyu yesterday, the court held that Nwoye was not eligible to participate in the August 24 primary election conducted under the supervision of Governor Ibrahim Shema of Katsina State.

The judge declared Ukachukwu the PDP candidate on the grounds that he was the only qualified aspirant in the said primary election.

According to Justice Aliyu, Ukachukwu scored the highest number of votes cast at the election. He restrained Nwoye from parading himself as the PDP candidate for the election.

The judge also restrained the PDP National Chairman, Bamanga Tukur, leadership of the party and INEC from presenting Nwoye as the PDP candidate.

“It is hereby declared that based on the dictates of paragraph 4(a) of Part IV of the Electoral Guidelines for Primary Elections 2010 of the Peoples Democratic Party, the first defendant (Tony Nwoye) was not eligible to participate and or take part in the primary election conducted on the August 24 by the second defendant (PDP) for the selection of its candidate for the Anambra State governorship election scheduled to hold on November 16 or another date.

“An order of mandatory injunction is hereby made compelling the fourth defendant (INEC) to recognise, screen the plaintiff (Ukachukwu), publish and put his name on the ballot paper as the authentic candidate of the second defendant (PDP) for the Anambra State governorship election,” Justice Aliyu ruled.

The judgment is coming on the heels of the expiration of the INEC deadline for the submission of candidates’ names in the election.

The PDP had submitted Nwoye’s name to the INEC as the party’s candidate, ahead of the deadline, which expired yesterday.
